Murray pulls out of 2017 US Open

World No. 2 and 2012 champion Andy Murray has pulled out of the US Open less than 48 hours before the tournament is set to begin.
Murray, who lost his spot to Rafael Nadal atop the rankings on Monday, was scheduled to play American Tennys Sandgren on Day 1 of the US Open on Monday.
“Obviously had the issue with the hip … since my match with Stan in Paris,” Murray said at a press conference Saturday afternoon in New York. “Did pretty much everything that I could to get myself ready here and took a number of weeks off after Wimbledon. I obviously spoke to a lot of hip specialists. Tried obviously resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready here.”
Under Grand Slam rules, if a top-four seed withdraws prior to the release of the order of play for the first day of the main draw, the fifth seed is moved into the open position; the fifth position shall be filled by the 17th seed; and the 17th position shall be filled by the next-highest ranked player eligible to be seeded.

This means that No. 5 seed Marin Cilic moves to Murray’s position and will play Tennys Sandgren. Sam Querrey moves to Cilic’s position and will play Gilles Simon. Philipp Kohlschreiber replaces Querrey and will play Tim Smyczek. Lucky loser Lukas Lacko has now gained entry to the men’s singles main draw.
Murray said he would not have been hurting himself more by trying to play, but that he is not at 100 percent and isn’t able to move the way he is able to when healthy.
“It was more a question of whether it would settle down in time,” Murray said. “Obviously I kind of ran out of time.
“You know, was actually practicing OK the last few days, but it's too sore for me to win the tournament and ultimately that's what I was here to try and do. Unfortunately, I won't be playing here this year. I want to be back on court as soon as I can. If it means that I can play before the end of the year, then that's what I would love to do. I miss competing, and I'll try to get myself back on court as soon as I can.”
It marks the first time Murray, who turned 30 this spring, will miss the final major of the year. He has played each of the past 12 US Opens since turning pro in 2005. The last Grand Slam he missed was the 2013 French Open when he had a back injury.
Murray's absence opens up the entire bottom half of the draw, and the fourth quarter in particular. The biggest beneficiary appears to be French No. 8 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who would have met Murray in the quarterfinals, and No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany, who was set to meet Murray in a blockbuster semifinal.

MURRAY: Yeah, I certainly wouldn't have been hurting myself more by trying to play. It was more a question of whether, you know, it would settle down in time.
Obviously, you know, I kind of ran out of, you know, ran out of time maybe if I'd been able to take a little bit more time off.
You know, I have never had to take any time off because of my hip before, so, you know, we're hoping that by taking a few weeks off and resting and rehabbing and really reducing the load that I was putting through it, that, you know, I would be okay by the time US Open came around, but unfortunately that's not been the case.
You know, obviously I spoke to a number of specialists about it to get the best advice possible. Obviously when you speak to a lot, there is different views and opinions on what the best thing to do is moving forward, and that's a decision I'll need to take now.
Q. (Question about prognosis and hope to play again this season.)
MURRAY: I'll definitely make a decision on that in the next few days. That's something that I'll sit down and decide with my team. But I'll decide on that in the next couple of days, for sure.
Q. Having seen how Roger has come back after a long break and seeing some of your contemporaries also make a decision in their long-term interests, does that give you hope you similarly can come back and be as good as you were before?
MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, if I get myself fit and healthy, there is no reason why I can't. I have been practicing here and, you know, competitive in practice when I'm not moving close to how I can when I'm healthy.
So, you know, obviously there has been a lot of players with injuries this year. Obviously Roger and Rafa last year had a few problems.
Look, I want to be back on court as soon as I can. If it means that, you know, I can play before the end of the year, then, you know, that's what I would love to do. I miss competing, and I'll try to get myself back on court as soon as I can.
But, you know, obviously, you know, I'll need to make the correct decision and really think it through these next couple of days with my team, and then, you know, make that decision.

Just wanted to update you all on my injury and the rest of my season.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in the upcoming events in Beijing and Shanghai, and most likely, the final two events to finish the season in Vienna and Paris due to my hip injury which has been bothering me the last few months.
Having consulted with a number of leading hip specialists over the last week, along with my own team, we have decided that this is the best decision for my long-term future.
Although this has been a frustrating year on court for many reasons, I’m confident after this extended period of rest and rehabilitation that I will be able to reach my best level again and be competing for Grand Slam titles next season.
I will be beginning my 2018 season in Brisbane in preparation for the Australian Open and I’m look forward playing in Glasgow later this year against Roger for UNICEF UK and Sunny-sid3up.
I have a fantastic team working alongside me to help me through this process and appreciate the support from them and all of my fans over this difficult period.

Andy Murray Set To End Injury-Stricken 2017 Season

Three-time grand slam champion Andy Murray is unlikely to play again on the tour this season after withdrawing from next month’s Paris Masters in Bercy.

Murray hasn’t played a match since his quarter-final loss at the Wimbledon championships. Since then, the Brit has been trying to overcome a hip injury that has hindered him. In recent months he has travelled to Switzerland to seek guidance on the best way to combat the problem. Last month he indicated that it was ‘likely’ that he wouldn’t play a match again this year when confirming his withdrawal from two tournaments in Asia.



“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in the upcoming events in Beijing and Shanghai, and most likely, the final two events to finish the season in Vienna and Paris due to my hip injury which has been bothering me the last few months.” Murray wrote in a statement.
“Having consulted with a number of leading hip specialists over the last week, along with my own team, we have decided that this is the best decision for my long-term future.
“Although this has been a frustrating year on court for many reasons, I’m confident after this extended period of rest and rehabilitation that I will be able to reach my best level again and be competing for Grand Slam titles next season.”

The decision to end his season early means Murray’s sole title of the year was at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Completing 2017 with a win-loss of 25-10, it is the first time that Murray has only managed to win one title in a season since 2006.

Planned return

Murray is scheduled to return to the tour next year at the Brisbane International, which will start on January 1st. He is a two-time champion of the tournament, last winning the title in 2013.

“Starting the year in Australia sets you up in the best possible way for a strong season and I’m excited to start my next three there. I love coming to Australia and the Brisbane tournament always has a strong field. I’m confident it will help me prepare for the Australian Open,” said Murray.

Whilst there is still no comment from the former world No.1 over his future plans, the director of the Australian Open recently told reporters that he has already started training for 2018. Craig Tiley said he was confident that the Brit will participate in the upcoming grand slam tournament in Melbourne.

“I can tell you that in talking to Andy, he has been training and he is preparing for having a great year in 2018. How much would this year have hurt him, to watch over the entire year Roger and Rafa share four grand slam titles – he would not have like that.” Said Tiley.
“As competitive as Andy is, we know he’s back and he’ll want to improve his current ranking of number three in the world and getting back to number one.”

Despite ending his season, Murray will be back on the court next month. On November 7th he is expected to take on Roger Federer in a charity exhibition at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow. The night is in aid of Unicef and a yet-to-be named Scottish charity.

Murray's Charity Auction To Benefit Children

Racquets, tickets and more up for grabs in online auction
ATP World Tour star Andy Murray will auction off tennis memorabilia, tickets to sporting events and other collectibles in an effort to raise money for children's charity groups.

The online auction will be held ahead of the second annual Andy Murray Live fundraising drive in Glasgow. Items up for bid include a signed tennis racquet used by Murray's coach and tennis legend Ivan Lendl, tickets for the 2018 Ryder Cup, a boxing glove signed by British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and other memorabilia.

In celebration of the auction, a competition will also run which will see the winner pick up a signed, framed racquet used by Murray during this year’s Wimbledon Championships. All proceeds from the event will go to children's rights organisation Unicef and Glasgow community charity Sunny-sid3up.
Additionally, a framed set of racquets from Murray, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (all with authentication certificates) will be auctioned at a charity dinner on 6 November. Fans not attending the dinner can email info@andymurraylive.com to be entered into the live auction on the night.
"By taking part in the auction you will be supporting this year’s two charities – children’s charity Unicef and Glasgow-based Sunny-sid3up. I really appreciate your support,” Murray said.

Last year's inaugural Andy Murray Live event was a success, but the Scottish player is hoping this year's fundraising drive will be even more better.

“Last year’s Andy Murray Live raised £305,000 ($400,806) for charity and our plans for this year are even more ambitious," Murray said.

Andy Murray has become a father for the second time after his wife Kim gave birth to another daughter.

The couple, who were married in 2015, had their first daughter Sophia in February last year.

Her sister's name has not yet been revealed, but it is understood that she was born in England a few days ago.

Andy's grandmother, Shirley Erskine, of Dunblane, said it was "lovely news".

She said: "I'm delighted, of course. Another little great-granddaughter and hopefully another little playmate for big sister Sophia.

"It's nice to get some good news. We were told that everything is well."

It has been a busy few days for the Scot, who was in action against Roger Federer on Tuesday in an exhibition match at The Hydro in Glasgow.

He was stepping up his recovery from a hip injury suffered in his shock Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to American Sam Querrey.

The injury is expected to keep him sidelined until the end of the year and he has dropped to 16th in the world rankings.

Murray: I'll be back when I'm ready

Britain's former world No 1 Andy Murray has vowed to return from injury when he's "100 per cent fit".

He said: "I hope I'm there. Things have been going pretty well so far in the rehab, but you just never know. You take each week as it comes."

Murray was all smiles for his charity match against Federer, having made the Swiss feel at home by treating him to a generous helping of "Andy's Granny's Homemade Shortbread". Federer took the court wearing a kilt and Murray sported a tartan hat, much to the approval of the 1,100 people in the crowd.

Murray is not a prolific Twitter user but did take to the platform to offer the Swiss further culinary advice. Responding to Federer's post about the shortbread, Murray tweeted: "Yea that's a good start but try a deep fried Mars bar on top of that and you'll be properly ready."

The shortbread seemed to do just the trick for Federer, who won the match on a tie-break after both men won a set 6-3.

Murray said: "I felt pretty good, not perfect yet, but I'm going in the right direction."

Andy Murray has admitted that his "hip felt pretty good" on his return from injury and the exhibition match against Roger Federer "went better than expected".

The three-time Grand Slam champion has not featured in competitive tennis since his Wimbledon quarter-final exit to Sam Querrey but appeared to move well during his singles match against Federer in Glasgow at a sold-out Hydro.

The Swiss won on a tie-break after both men shared the opening two sets 6-3 in the match which was part of the Andy Murray Live fundraiser.

Murray said after the one hour and 40-minute match: "My hip felt pretty good, not perfect yet but it's going in the right direction. I've got eight weeks until my first tournament of next year and hopefully I'll be there."

He added: "It went better than I expected. I was just really happy to be out here and it went pretty well. There are things I want to do better but, for a first match in four or five months, it went great. I felt pretty good, not perfect yet, but I'm going in the right direction."

The British No 1 indicated prior to the charity match that he was aiming for a return to the tour at the Brisbane International in the New Year but that he would only return when he was "100 per cent fit".

The match was played in a relaxed fashion - Federer played one game wearing a kilt while Murray wore a tam o'shanter tartan hat.

ANDY AND IVAN LENDL CALL TIME ON COACHING PARTNERSHIP

Andy Murray and Ivan Lendl today announced they have mutually agreed to end their coaching relationship.

During the partnership, over two separate periods, Murray won three Grand Slam titles, two Olympic Golds and obtained the world #1 ranking. The partnership paved the way for several high profile coaching relationships.

Murray will continue to build his fitness with a training block in Miami before heading to Australia in December ahead of Brisbane and the Australian Open. “I’m thankful to Ivan for all his help and guidance over the years, we’ve had great success and learned a lot as a team. My focus now is on getting ready for Australia with the team I have in place and getting back to competing.”, said Murray.

Lendl, who will continue to work with USTA Player Development where his group’s Patrick Kypson recently won his first pro event added: “I wish Andy well going forward. We had a great run and a lot of fun.”

Concern over Andy Murray’s readiness for the start of the new season have erupted after it has been reported that he is yet to travel to Australia.

The former world No.1 hasn’t played a match on the tour since his quarter-final loss at Wimbledon. Murray had to end his season early due to a lingering hip injury. The 30-year-old opted to take time away to rest his hip rather than undergo surgery. He is set to return to action at the Brisbane International in less than two weeks time, but that now hangs in the balance following a report by The Daily Telegraph.



Murray is still in the UK training at the All England Club’s facilities in Wimbledon and Raynes Park. Earlier in the year, the Brit didn’t mention that he would be training in his home country ahead of the new season. In November, he told reporters that his plan was to go to Miami and then Australia to get used to the climate.

“Obviously coming into the beginning of the new year I will be at a bit of a disadvantage because I have not played matches for a long time,” Murray told reporters in November.
“If I can go there (Australia) a little bit earlier to get used to the conditions, a bit sooner than some of the other players that might help level it up a little bit for me.”

It is unclear as to why Murray’s plans had changed. It is unlikely that he will have enough time to set up the base and adjust to the climate. Murray is set to be the third seed at the Brisbane International, which will start on January 1st.

Despite the concerns, The Courier Mail has reported that the organisers of the Brisbane International are still confident of Murray’s presence. As one of the top seeds, the Brit has the advantage of receiving a first round bye. Meaning he won’t have to play a match until at least two days after the event has begun.

There has been no comment from Murray’s team about his plans for the new year. The former world No.1 is hoping to get ready in time for the first grand slam of 2018. The Australian Open will get underway on January 15th. Murray is a five-time runner-up at the event.
