Straight after World No. 1 Rafael Nadal closed out his semi-final victory over reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Grigor Dimitrov Saturday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters and shook hands, he took his cell phone out of his bag momentarily. Why?

“I was texting Carlos to tell him that we need to book a court quick,” Nadal said of sending a message to his coach, former World No. 1 Carlos Moya. “That's all.”

It was back to practice on a distant court for the 10-time Monte-Carlo champion, despite not losing more than four games in a set during his impressive 34-set winning streak on clay.

“I did it a lot of times in my career,” Nadal said of practising right after matches. “After the match, I was a little bit more nervous at the beginning. I just wanted to hit some forehands winners that I think I need for tomorrow.”

Nadal has looked impressive during his four matches at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, where he now holds a 67-4 record. But the 31-year-old Spaniard made it clear by going to practice ahead of his championship match against Kei Nishikori — there is always something to improve.

W tej statystyce na pierwszym miejscu od wielu lat jest Borg 609-127 ( 82,745 %) (celowo podaję z dokładnością 0,000, bo tu są promilowe różnice).

Przez długi też czas drugie miejsce okupowało Słońce Bałkanów, ale niestety (stety ) jak to bywa z pogodą, nadciągnęły chmury... obecnie: 788-167 ( 82,513 % ).

Po MC Rafa wyprzedził Novaka: 884-186 ( 82,617 % ).
W tym tempie na jedynkę w win rate wskoczy wygrywając trzeci mecz w Madrycie. (oczywiście to tylko teoria ).

Monako jest księstwem, ale rozgrywany w tym kraju turniej tenisowy ma swojego króla. Jest nim Rafael Nadal, który w niedzielę pokonał Keia Nishikoriego i zdobył 11. tytuł w imprezie Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

Rafael Nadal w turnieju w Monte Carlo zadebiutował w 2003 roku jako 16-latek. Dotarł wówczas do III rundy, w której przegrał z wtedy jednym z najlepszych specjalistów od gry na kortach ziemnych, Guillermo Corią. Na korty w Monako powrócił w sezonie 2005. I rozpoczął swoje wieloletnie panowanie.
W latach 2005-12 na Nadala w Monte Carlo nie było mocnych. Triumfował w ośmiu kolejnych edycjach tego turnieju i wygrał 46 meczów z rzędu. Jego nieprawdopodobną passę zakończył Novak Djoković, pokonując Hiszpana finale w 2013 roku.

Tytuł w Monte Carlo Nadal odzyskał po trzech latach. W 2017 roku sięgnął po kolejne mistrzostwo, zostając pierwszym w historii tenisistą, który wygrał jeden turniej dziesięć razy. A w tym sezonie poprawił to osiągnięcie do 11. tytułów. Tegoroczną edycję Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters wygrał w imponującym stylu. Nie stracił seta, łącznie oddał rywalom zaledwie 21 gemów. W finale pokonał 6:3, 6:2 Keia Nishikoriego.

Ogólna statystyka występów Rafy w Monte Carlo jest obłędnie doskonała. Wygrał 68 z 72 rozegranych meczów w tym turnieju. W 15. startach 12 razy doszedł do finału, a 11 razy zwyciężył. Nigdy nie odpadł wcześniej niż w III rundzie. Pięciokrotnie (sezony 2007-08, 2010, 2012 i 2018) w drodze po trofeum nie przegrał seta. World No. 1 wins historic 11th title in the Principality

Rafael Nadal continued to build upon his extraordinary legacy at Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Sunday when he captured his 11th trophy, which represented a record 31st ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown.

The Spanish superstar, who boasts a 396-35 record on clay courts (.919) according to the FedEx ATP Performance Zone, beat Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 6-2 in a one-hour and 34-minute final. It was their third clash in a red dirt title match — also 2014 Mutua Madrid Open and 2016 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

"My true feeling is these kind of things are not going to happen forever, so I just try to enjoy them and to play with the full passion and with the full energy and concentration, full love for the sport until I can," said Nadal. "I know the day to say goodbye is closer than 10 years ago. It is something that I am not worried about, but it is a real thing. So I am just enjoying every day and trying to play with the best attitude possible, to keep being happy playing tennis. That's all.

"Of course it is a special day for me. Winning again this title here in Monte-Carlo means a lot, especially because it is the first tournament in the year that I finished. To have the victory in a Masters 1000, especially in Monte-Carlo, that for me is one of the most important ones in terms of personal feeling and in terms of history of our sport. I am very excited and very happy for everything."

The victory improves Nadal match record to 11-1 on the 2018 season and means that the 31-year-old will begin his 171st week at No. 1 in ATP Rankings on Monday, breaking a tie with American John McEnroe (170 weeks). Nadal, with 76 career titles (54 on clay), is now also one trophy shy of McEnroe’s singles haul (77). He will now travel to Barcelona, where he is a 10-time titlist, having won a career-best 36 consecutive sets on clay.



His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, and his wife, Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco, presented Nadal with the Monte-Carlo trophy in front of a capacity crowd on Court Rainier III. Nadal received €935,385 in prize money and earned 1,000 ATP Rankings points.

"It is very special," Nadal added. "But 11 titles here, it's unbelievable, so it's something difficult to imagine. I always say the same: If I did it, somebody else can do it. But it is very difficult. I really don't know how these things can happen because it is lot of years without making mistakes and without being unlucky in this week. I have been unlucky other weeks, but not this week.

"The history with this tournament is unique. To put another trophy in my museum, in my academy, is going to be something great. Eleven is a lot, especially here in Monte-Carlo."

Nishikori saved one break point in a 16-point second game of the pair’s 12th FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting, prior to clinching Nadal’s serve with a delicate backhand winner down the line for 2-1. But Nishikori looked deflated one game later when he double-faulted to gift Nadal a way back into the set. Nadal didn’t need another invitation as he won four of the next five games finishing the 56-minute opener with a trademark forehand approach down the line.

Once Nadal cleaned the right tramline with a crosscourt forehand winner to break Nishikori in the third game, the second set was one-way traffic. From 0-1, Nadal won five straight games, including a service break at 1-3 courtesy of Nadal forehand error.

Nadal lost just 21 games in his five matches — against Aljaz Bedene, Karen Khachanov, Dominic Thiem, Grigor Dimitrov and Nishikori — this week at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, where he has a 68-4 record with 12 final appearances. It is the fifth time he has won the Monte-Carlo title without dropping a set (also 2008-10 and 2012).

This week, Nadal was competing in just his second tournament of the season, having sustained a hip injury during his Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic in January.

The 28-year-old Nishikori was contesting the fourth Masters 1000 championship match of his career (0-4), after runner-up finishes to Nadal at 2014 Madrid and to Djokovic at 2016 Miami Open presented by Itau and Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Japanese, who may meet Nadal in next week’s Barcelona quarter-finals, received €458,640 in prize money and earned 600 ATP Rankings points.

"I knew it's going to be tough to maintain my level because he gives me all the balls back," said Nishikori. "It's not easy to dominate the point with Rafa all the time. I knew it's going to be tough even though I was up a break.

"I was kind of out of gas, especially in the second set. How he plays... He makes every shot. He makes it tough. I think he was also playing great tennis. It was not easy to maintain my level until the end today."

Nadal will next head to Barcelona in search of yet another 11-title haul at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. He finds himself in the same quarter of the draw as Nishikori and longtime rival Novak Djokovic, with a potential rematch against the Japanese awaiting in the third round. Draw Preview

"Next week is another week that I have a tough draw in Barcelona," Nadal continued. "Today is a day to enjoy this because winning a tournament like this one not happening every day. But tomorrow I need to start being focused on the next week. Is not the moment to stop and to disconnect your mind. Is the moment to stay focused and to keep holding that momentum that is good one after winning seven matches in a row on clay now, this year. That's a positive thing. The way that I won the matches are very positive. So is the moment to keep going, and that's my goal."

Rafa Seeking Another 'Unforgettable Moment' In Barcelona

'Tis the season for Rafael Nadal, when the Spaniard is all smiles and the tennis world quickly runs out of adjectives. A day after winning his 11th Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters title, the World No. 1 had made his way to Barcelona, where he'll go for title No. 11 at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, an ATP World Tour 500 tournament.

The event has a special “home” feeling for Nadal. He grew up in Mallorca, a Spanish island about an hour's flight from Barcelona, and last year at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, officials named the main show court after Nadal, Pista Rafa Nadal.

The Spaniard is 53-3 in Barcelona and has won eight of his 10 titles without dropping a set, including 2016-17.

“It was fantastic. It was an unforgettable moment,” Nadal said of winning his 10th title.

“It's a tournament that I know very well. I feel a little bit like home, even if my home is Mallorca, I am from this club and I enjoy the fact that I can play here in front of my people.

“This part of the season, all the events are so special for me, so I really enjoy playing every week and this week is not an exception. Now having two weeks at home, Barcelona and then [the Mutua Madrid Open, starting 6 May], it's a special two weeks back-to-back.”

Nadal is the top seed in a crowded Barcelona draw that includes three Top 10 players in Grigor Dimitrov, Dominic Thiem and David Goffin. Monte-Carlo finalist Kei Nishikori, a two-time Barcelona champion (2014-15), and former No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who accepted a wild card last week, will also compete in the Spanish metropolis.

Nadal could face Nishikori in the third round, the sixth-seeded Djokovic in the quarter-finals and Goffin, the fourth seed, in the semi-finals. A rematch with Thiem or Dimitrov would have to wait until the final.

Last year, Thiem was the only player to beat Nadal on clay, but the Spaniard again avenged that loss last week in Monte-Carlo, advancing 6-0, 6-2 in the quarter-finals.

The next round, Nadal dismissed Dimitrov 6-4, 6-1 before beating Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Nadal has won a career-best 36 consecutive sets on clay.

“Very happy about what happened last week of course. It was a great week,” Nadal said.

The 31-year-old left-hander needs to win his 11th title in Barcelona to remain No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, or else Swiss Roger Federer will take over. But Nadal said holding onto the top ranking isn't any extra motivation for him this week.

“For me the extra motivation is just playing the tournaments that I am playing,” Nadal said. “Monte-Carlo, for me is like a love story and here, almost the same. My real motivation is just play, Monte-Carlo last week and now play Barcelona. That's a tournament that I have had a lot of success and I really feel the passion for playing.”

O tym, że Rafael Nadal na mączce jest niemal nie do pokonania, wiedzą wszyscy sympatycy tenisa. Tymczasem okazuje się, że z Hiszpanem trudno jest zdobyć nawet seta. W środę pobił rekord kolejnych wygranych partii w meczach na kortach ziemnych.

W środę, w meczu II rundy turnieju ATP World Tour 500 w Barcelonie, Rafael Nadal pokonał 6:4, 6:4 rodaka, Roberto Carballesa. Dla Hiszpana był to odpowiednio 37. i 38. z rzędu wygrany set na ceglanej mączce. Pobił tym samym rekord kolejnych wygranych partii w meczach rozgrywanych na tej nawierzchni.
Drogę po rekordowe osiągnięcie Nadal rozpoczął jeszcze w ubiegłym roku, w I rundzie Rolanda Garrosa ogrywając 6:1, 6:4, 6:1 Benoita Paire'a. Wówczas w Paryżu zdobył tytuł bez straty partii.
