Vasek Pospisil is looking to reach
the third round of a major for the
first time.

Playing his first Grand Slam championship as a seeded player, Vasek Pospisil is far from fazed. It’s been a fast turnaround for the Canadian, who this time last year was sidelined with mononucleosis and outside the Top 100. But going from the hunter to the hunted has given the 23-year-old Pospisil extra confidence as he looks to step onto court and grab his opportunity with both hands.

Pospisil rocketed up the Emirates ATP Rankings in the blink of an eye last summer, when he beat Tomas Berdych en route to the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal (l. to Raonic). But there’s going to be little time spent enjoying the view from the Top 30, where he currently resides after a semi-final in Chennai at the start of the year. Pospisil has already set his sights on the Top 20 in 2014.

“It turned quickly for sure,” Pospisil told ATPWorldTour.com after his first-round win at the Australian Open on Monday. “It’s one of those things that’s hard to get used to at the beginning, but I feel like I’ve settled down a little bit now and I feel like I’m in my place.

“I’m just trying to not think too much about the consequences and results, but just do the best I can every time I get on the court and try to improve. I feel like I’ve been doing that really well lately and I’m excited about where my game is right now.

“My goals are always changing,” continued the right-hander. “The more you move up, the more you want to do. The goal last year was to finish Top 50, which I accomplished. Now that I’m ranked No. 30, we set our goal to be Top 20, which is going to be extremely difficult. It’s a lot easier said than done. But it’s always important to want to reach higher than where you are now. I think as long as I have that in mind, then I can give myself a chance to get there.”

In a confident display on Monday at Melbourne Park, Pospisil cruised past Samuel Groth to set a second-round clash with another Australian, Matthew Ebden. He is hoping to reach the third round of a major for the first time, but relishes the expectation that goes along with being seeded.

“There’s been added expectations to get used to in the past six or seven months,” said Pospisil. “But that’s actually something that I like. I don’t mind if suddenly I’m expected to beat players that six months ago I was the underdog against. It actually gives me a bit of confidence.

“It definitely feels different in the locker room. I don’t mind it at all actually! It’s kind of nice to be honest, to be seeded at a slam. I never thought this would be so quick. Going back one year ago, I had mono, and a year later I’m seeded at a Slam. It’s rewarding to see your name seeded in the draw. It changes things a little bit, but at the same time not very much because every day you go through the same routines and you try to get better and it’s pretty simple from there.”

Backing up a breakthrough year is never easy. That notion was at the forefront of Pospisil and coach Frederic Fontang’s minds when they set about their 2014 preparations in the off-season. With the game going in the right direction, more consistent aggression from the 6’4'' Pospisil, there was focus also on dealing with the target that is set to be on his back now.

“I’m in a different position now, obviously,” said Pospisil. “This is going to be the most difficult year for me. Always when you have a breakthrough, I think the year after is always a very difficult one. I knew going into the off-season that I was going to have a lot to deal with this year. I’ve had a good start so far and I trained really hard, so whatever happens now happens. I have no regrets. I prepared the best I can. I guess I’ll just see how it goes from here.”

Q. How afraid were you to play Wawrinka?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, no, I mean, it seems I don't want to play him. Retired against him twice now. Really unfortunate injury for me. It's disappointing. I'm really disappointed to be pulling out. It's my first third round in a Grand Slam.

I was excited to do my best and take the opportunity, but unfortunately not able to do so at this time.



Q. What's the prognosis for the back? For example, for Davis Cup, going forward, what the effects may be?
VASEK POSPISIL: It's nothing too serious right now, but there's, you know, significant risk if I were to play on it that I could do some serious damage. I don't want to jeopardize the rest of my season in any way.

I was advised to pull out and not to step on the court, that I'd just be putting my season in danger. So it was just the smart move really to pull out, and, yeah, be safe with my body and try and get ready hopefully in time for Davis Cup.

But I guess we'll see how I progress in the healing process.



Q. That's a significantly different prognosis than you were hearing last night on the court from the physio. Am I right?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah. I guess the MRI is quite specific and shows a lot of detail. Had a spine surgeon, specialist, look at it back home.

So, yeah, it was not good news to hear. But at the same time, fortunate that I didn't do any severe damage or anything that I would regret.



Q. What would you say the percentage is for Davis Cup? It's coming up quickly.
VASEK POSPISIL: It's coming up quickly, yeah. It's two weeks away. It's really hard for me right now to put any numbers on it. I think the chances are good. I mean, to be honest, I'll have to see. I'm going to fly to Vancouver first thing tomorrow and start rehab.

Like I said, there's nothing that's really wrong with it right now. It's just more preventive, something that could be, and I'm supposed to keep off it for a little while.

But there's definitely, you know, a good potential that I'll be ready for Davis Cup.

Vasek Pospisil visited the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday to meet sponsors, media and fans at the Caja Magica. Having struggled with a back injury since the Australian Open, the Canadian rising star was forced to pull out of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament this week, but sat down with ATPWorldTour.com to discuss the last time…

I cooked for myself or others?
[After significant deliberation]… let me think, I want to give the right answer to this. It’s quite rare. It was in Australia. I cooked for myself during a Challenger in 2011, I want to say. It’s embarrassing. But it was delicious! I made chicken and spaghetti with sauce from a can or something. I’m better at tennis!

I did my own laundry?
Actually, I do my own laundry quite often. It was last month in Bradenton, in my apartment.

Being famous helped me?
It helps especially because I’m spending so much time at tennis events, so it helps for practice courts. It’s always tennis related. It did help me get an upgrade recently, flying through Canada. I think that was a couple of months ago.


I met a childhood idol?
It was Roger Federer. I met him, played against him at the Rogers Cup in 2011. I didn’t ask for an autograph, I was just happy enough that he beat me because I always hated it when he lost back then [laughing]! Things have changed a bit now!

I shared a hotel room with another player?
It’s been a long time. Probably three years ago as well, at a Challenger. Around the same time I was cooking for myself!

I paid to rent a court or had to buy tennis balls?
I just bought tennis balls two weeks ago in a supermarket in the south of France when I was practising down there with my coach.

I strung my own racquet?
I haven’t strung a racquet maybe since I was 16 or 17. I’ve strung one racquet, but my Dad was always stringing for me because he was travelling with me until I was 20. So he took care of my racquets. I never really had to string any!

I missed a flight?
Never missed a flight. I’ve missed a connection, but I can’t help that. But on my own terms, I’ve never come late to the airport or anything like that. I’m extremely punctual.

I visited a country for the first time?
That would have been China last year. It was great. Great tournaments. I went to Beijing first.

I forgot a family member or close friend’s birthday?
Never have. Well, never a family member that’s for sure. Close friends? I mean it happens obviously, every now and then. Sometimes they can slip your mind.

I played the guitar for an audience?
I just played a song last week for my team, but it still counts as an audience: my coach and physio. I’m not really good enough. I just started this year. I do sing as well, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I sing well! Let me re-phrase: I try to sing. I’ve been learning for three months now, but I can already play a good 25 songs or so. I’ve had some free time because I’ve been injured. I was injured for a month after Australia. I’m a pretty quick learner.

I played another sport that could have caused me a minor injury?
I’ve pretty much stopped playing other sports. The last time, I was 12 years old when I got a black eye, an elbow to the face when I was playing football. At the time, I was playing just as much football as I was tennis. After that injury, my Dad just said, ‘OK, no more’. I don’t think my opponent got red-carded, though, I think he got a pat on the back!

Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock capped a dream Wimbledon campaign on Saturday with a 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the championship match.

Victory for Pospisil and Sock gives them a strong chance of qualifying for the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, set to be played at The O2 in London from 9-16 November.

"I think this is the highlight of my career, for sure," said Pospisil. "These last two weeks have been amazing, to be honest, because the whole year was a struggle. Just not feeling good on the court. Then last week was my first pain-free week of the year. That was really nice. Then now to cap it off with a title at Wimbledon is not bad."

"We had a lot of fun," added Sock. "People could see that. I think that's part of why we did well. We really enjoyed being out there, enjoyed the moment. It was both of our first times on Centre Court there. As kids we grew up watching this tournament. This is what we kind of dreamed of doing. To be able to go out there and play the best doubles team of all time and to get a win was pretty incredible."

Pospisil and Sock are the third pairing this century to win the Wimbledon title on their tournament debut, following Stephen Huss/Wesley Moodie in 2005 and Jonathan Marray/Frederik Nielsen in 2012.

They are the third team to win a Grand Slam title in their first tournament together and first since Lleyton Hewitt and Max Mirnyi captured the US Open trophy in 2000.

Pospisil and Sock had reached the final with upset wins over eighth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, second seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares and fifth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek.

"Our road here was pretty crazy, playing Bopanna-Qureshi, Peya-Soares, Paes-Stepanek, and then the Bryans," said Sock. "I think before if we had known that was our path, I don't know how certain we'd be that we'd be sitting here right now. We gelled really well together, clicked well at the right times, and were able to come out on top at the end of the two weeks."

In a tense fifth set, Bob Bryan saved two match points as he rallied from 15/40 down in the 10th game. Mike Bryan looked to have dug himself out of the same hole in the 12th game with two aces, but the right-hander netted a forehand volley to give Pospisil and Sock a fifth match point, which they converted as Sock hit a forehand winner. The Bryans actually won three points more in the match lasting just over three hours.

"The best part of today was not having to hit anything on match point, just watch that ball go in the court," said Pospisil. "Seeing Jack run around that forehand and crush it down the line. That was probably the best part of the match."

"Those are two good players," said Bob Bryan. "They're great athletes. They both have bright futures on the singles court, as well. Whenever they step out there on the doubles court they're going to be a tough team to beat. Both guys serve well. They know how to move at the net. They know how to poach. They're not afraid to get in there and get dirty on the volleys. A lot of firepower."

At 21 years old, Sock is the youngest player to win both a men's doubles and a mixed slam title since Todd Woodbridge in 1992. The American triumphed at the 2011 US Open with Melanie Oudin.

The 36-year-old Bryans were bidding to win their 99th team title and 16th Grand Slam championship. The American twins were looking to add to the Wimbledon titles they won in 2006 (d. Santoro/Zimonjic), 2011 (d. Lindstedt/Tecau) and 2013 (d. Dodig/Melo).

"The atmosphere was great," said Bob Bryan. "Always a special feeling on Centre Court. Unfortunately we were on the losing end of it, which doesn't feel good. But we'll look back on this run we had here with good feelings. Wasn't always the prettiest of tennis, but I thought we fought hard for two weeks and turned it into a final. Almost another trophy"

"When you put yourself in these big title matches and you don't come out on top, they sting," said Mike Bryan. "We've been in 26 Grand Slam finals; we've lost 11 of them. Those are daggers. But we usually bounce back. It's going to motivate us to go hit the gym. You can't win 'em all."

Guitar, Set, Match: Pospisil

Vasek Pospisil was the odd man out in his family.

It wasn’t because the young Canadian quickly became one of tennis’ bright new stars. It was because he didn’t know how to play a musical instrument.

“My brothers have a band in Vancouver and my dad actually had a band himself back in the day in Czech Republic,” Pospisil told ATPWorldTour.com. “Our whole family loves music. I was the only one who didn't know how to play an instrument, so I just decided to do something on the road because there’s downtime.”

About a year ago, the four-time ATP World Tour doubles titlist put down his tennis racquet, but only momentarily, as he picked up a Godin guitar in an effort to keep up with his musical family.

“I was playing quite a bit the first five or six months, and then I kind of stopped recently,” he said. “Now I’m trying to get back into it again. Maybe [I’ll] be able to play some solos soon.”

Pospisil tweeted a video of one solo he recorded last week in Indian Wells with his brother Tom, one of the two Pospisil brothers in the Vancouver-based band Gentle Machine.

“My brother was there with me and we were just fooling around and decided to post it,” he said. “Every now and again he’ll throw me some pointers when we’re together, but I just started learning online.”

Pospisil showed off his self-taught skills in the video of an acoustic cover of a song by the Arctic Monkeys, one of his favourite bands. The 24 year old prefers alternative, Indie and rock music, while he enjoys listening to The Shins, Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers and “was always a huge Beatles fan growing up”.

“I learned that about him in Atlanta last summer,” said Pospisil’s doubles partner, Jack Sock. “He was trying to teach me a little bit and for some reason I’m not very coordinated with a guitar and it’s annoying me.

“He hasn’t been playing very long. So for the time he’s been playing, I think he’s very good. I want to learn so maybe on the road now he can teach me.”

The successful doubles partners, who won the BNP Paribas Open title last week to go along with their Atlanta and Wimbledon titles, may have a lot more time on the road together for Sock to learn. And luckily, Pospisil travels every week with his guitar.

“I prioritise my guitar surprisingly,” he said. “I take the guitar on the plane with me and the racquets I check in. It can be a bit of a hassle, but it’s worth it.”

Pospisil plays his first-round singles match at the Miami Open presented by Itau against Juan Martin del Potro on Thursday. He and Sock, the tournament’s second seeds, will face Leonardo Mayer and Gilles Muller in the first round.

Pospisil & Sock: The Power Of Laughter

While most teams strive to find the winning formula on and off the court to get the most out of their partnership, Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock will happily tell you there is no greater foundation to success than friendship.

“I sound like I’m talking about a girlfriend!” jokes Jack Sock as he tries to explain how his chemistry with Vasek Pospisil has led to the 2014 Wimbledon title and an intense assault on the March Masters, that saw them win the Indian Wells crown and finish runners-up in Miami.

You only need to spend a couple of minutes in the company of the team variously nicknamed ‘Popsock’ and ‘Pospisock’ before the fun banter bubbles to the surface. From the moment they stepped on court together as a scratch pairing for their first-round match at Wimbledon, a firm friendship has blossomed between the Canadian and the American.

If they aren’t watching movies together, or eating sushi dinners, or swapping tips on Chipotle orders, then they’re jet-skiing in Miami on a day off.

“We’re both pretty laid back,” says Sock. “He’s learning to play guitar on the road. He travels with one. So I’m actually going to try to take him up on some lessons. I want to learn myself. We’re both pretty relaxed and it works well. He has a pretty dry sense of humour. I’m a little more sarcastic and a little more outgoing.

“Tennis is a lot of time on the road, a lot of hotel rooms and a lot of down time. When you have a good buddy who you can hang out with, it takes away from all the computer shows that I watch and all the movies I rent on the TV! I think we’ll probably continue to be friends even post-tennis.”

For Pospisil and Sock, it makes a change from the often solitary existence of a singles player on the ATP World Tour, where the competition is so fierce that it can be difficult to maintain good friendships among rivals.

“I’m extremely professional and maybe detach myself from the others a little bit and do my own thing,” explains Pospisil. “But it’s really nice having this partnership with Jack. I just feel like it’s more than that; it’s a friendship.

“I’m always really excited to see him at an event and hang out, have some fun and go and hit some balls on the court and play some doubles. It’s pretty unique. It’s not something that I’ve had much in the past and it’s pretty cool. I consider him my best friend on the tour, along with Nestor. He and Danny are my two best friends.”

What might have started out as a bit of fun in the early rounds at Wimbledon quickly got serious as they turned over the likes of Bopanna/Qureshi, Peya/Soares, Paes/Stepanek to reach the final, where they edged Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 7-5 in the fifth set to win the championship.

Adding to their haul with victory in Atlanta and a runner-up effort to the Bryans in Cincinnati, the duo came within one missed volley on a match point in Shanghai of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

Their rivalry with the Bryans was reignited during the March Masters, with Pospisil/Sock taking the spoils in the Indian Wells quarter-finals before the twins got revenge in a Match Tie-break in the Miami final.

Indeed, no-one knows better than the Bryans the importance of a having a strong bond on the tennis court. “Obviously, when you’re friends and you’re having fun on the court, the results are always going to be better,” says Bob.

“That’s showed in our games; our bond has kept us consistent. You can see with them that they have a really deep friendship. I think that loyalty that they have to each other has kept their level pretty high as well.”

You wouldn’t think they hadn’t seen each other for four-and-a-half months when they reunited at the BNP Paribas Open four weeks ago. With Sock off tour due to surgery and then supporting his family as his brother, Eric, battled a life-threatening condition, the pair had only been in touch on WhatsApp.

But there was no sign of any rust in their partnership as they backed up victory over the Bryans by beating Australian Open champions Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini to capture their third team title in the desert.

It’s purely down to “natural chemistry”, explains World No. 5 Pospisil, who today ended Daniel Nestor’s 14-year reign as Canada’s No. 1 doubles player. “It’s a good combination. We’re very similar and different at the same time. We’re similar in the right kind of things and we have a really good time. We’re always having fun on the court, always joking around. We’re serious too; we talk strategy when we need to. But we also keep it pretty light and I think that’s one of the keys to our success.”

Adds Sock, "We stay very relaxed. We have a lot of fun smiling, joking around most of the time on the changeover or maybe even between points; we're not even talking about tennis. We'll just joke around. We play loose and we are able to hit our shots and have a good time. In turn, that helps us play well. But when it’s crunch time, like a tie-break, we throw a lot of fist bumps into it.”

It may sound like somewhat of a hit and giggle attitude, but that doesn’t win you Grand Slam championships. Make no mistake, the competitive fires burn brightly for Pospisil and Sock, whether it’s in singles or doubles, and some tactics do come into play to maximise their naturally complementary playing styles.

“I think we gel well together with our strengths,” says Sock. “Vasek has pretty unbelievable hands. He's able to get us out of some trouble with serve and volleys, sticking volleys.

“He moves very well at the net and understands doubles obviously very well. I like to stay back and dictate with my serve or my forehand. I will get us out of trouble sometimes from the back and be able to kind of manoeuvre the ball around to also help him at the net and get the shot he wants.”

They will both tell you there’s no clear leader when they take the court. If one’s down, the other will pick him up and vice versa. “I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve been so successful; no-one’s taking the lead in all the matches,” says Pospisil. “It’s always a shared responsibility. That’s why we’re so dangerous. I don’t feel like there’s a weak link on the team. One’s always stepping up.”

The doubles success may be coming thick and fast, but singles remains the clear priority for both. While Pospisil reached the Top 25 of the Emirates ATP Rankings last year, Sock is knocking on the door of the Top 40. And there’s a lot to be gained by playing at the business end of a tournament, be it in singles or doubles.

Doubles“Any time you step on court you can improve something for your singles game,” says Pospisil. “So when I’m playing doubles, just being aggressive at the net and closing off points, you can work on your return as well. Those are things that I want to implement and start using in my singles game as well. I think it’s maybe a bit of a hidden weapon that I’m not using enough. I think I can make my way to the net more when I’m playing singles as well. The doubles can only help in that aspect.”

Adds Sock, “Anytime you’re playing at the end of a tournament, you’re one of the last guys in the locker room and playing for trophies, playing in front of the big crowds, it always sets you up to be more comfortable when you go out and play singles on the weekends, like we have done in doubles. It definitely helps.”

After just two tournaments together in 2015, Pospisil and Sock are already up to fourth in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings and are set to join forces on the court again next month at the Mutua Madrid Open. At this stage, the Bryans aren’t the only ones looking over the shoulders as teams look for an early advantage in the race to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

“They’ve shown that they can win big titles,” says Bob Bryan. “They’ve beaten all the best teams in the world and they’re hot right now. They can challenge us; they can challenge anyone. There’s a lot of good teams and those guys seem to be shuffling their way right to the top.”
