Ramos-Vinolas Sweeps Into Marrakech Second Round

Haase, Dolgopolov make early exits

Top seed and 2012 finalist Albert Ramos-Vinolas lost just two of his first-service points (20/22) to beat Moroccan wild card Amine Ahouda 6-1, 6-2 in 68 minutes on Tuesday at the Grand Prix Hassan II. Ramos-Vinolas, who has a 1-5 record in ATP World Tour finals, is 112-95 lifetime in clay-court matches according to the FedEx ATP Reliability Index (166-186 overall).

"I'm happy with my match today," said Ramos-Vinolas. "I haven't a played a tournament for a month and it feels great to be back. I'm looking forward to the clay court swing and playing a lot of tournaments." He will next play Russian qualifier Alexey Vatutin, who recorded his first tour-level match win in beating Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

There were two seeds — No. 5 Robin Haase and No. 7 Alexandr Dolgopolov — who made early exits at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament. Former World No. 13 Dolgpolov has missed the past nine weeks due to a right wrist injury.

Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Mirza Basic hit nine aces in scraping past Haase 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 15 minutes, will Italian qualifier Andrea Arnaboldi saved all six break points he faced to defeat Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-3 in 79 minutes.

Elsewhere, two former champions from Spain — 2011-12 titlist Pablo Andujar and 2014 winner Guillermo Garcia-Lopez — booked their spots in the second round. Andujar knocked out Belarusian lucky loser Ilya Ivashka 6-3, 7-5 and Garcia-Lopez overcame French qualifier Calvin Hemery 6-2, 6-2.

Second-seeded Briton Kyle Edmund was leading Jiri Vesely, a semi-finalist in Morocco for the past three years, 5-0 after 17 minutes of play when the Czech retired due to injury.

Ramos-Vinolas Saves 2 MP, Ousts Seppi

Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas might have arrived in China just one match removed from an eight-match tour-level losing streak. But the World No. 52 fought off two match points in a second-set tie-break at the Shenzhen Open on Monday before beating No. 8 seed Andreas Seppi 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 6-3.
The 30-year-old will try to book his spot in the quarter-finals when he faces Serbian Viktor Troicki, who led Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 5-3 when the Spaniard retired due to a hip injury. Ramos-Vinolas has won both of his FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings against Troicki, and he will be trying to earn his 20th tour-level match win of 2018.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert needed just 64 minutes to beat Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-3. The Frenchman won 82 per cent of his service points (41/50) to book a second-round meeting against #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
On his Shenzhen debut, Brit Cameron Norrie defeated Chinese wild card Di Wu 6-2, 6-2. Norrie, who reached back-to-back semi-finals in Atlanta and Los Cabos, saved all six break points he faced to advance after 70 minutes.
Yoshihito Nishioka dropped just four games in his Shenzhen opener, beating American Denis Kudla 6-1, 6-3 in 59 minutes. The Japanese left-hander converted five of nine break points en route to victory. He will try to reach his second ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season when he faces No. 6 seed Denis Shapovalov or Belarusian Ilya Ivashka.

Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas isn't ready to stand on a podium and shout, “I'm back!” But his play on Wednesday at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open has the 31-year-old encouraged that he can again find the level that took him to his biggest final to date, the 2017 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, where he fell to Rafael Nadal.

Ramos-Vinolas, No. 91 in the ATP Rankings, routed Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-0, 6-3 to make the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 event.

“I played really good today. I'm really happy. I was really concentrating during all the match, and I think I played a great level, maybe I played the same level as two years ago, when I was playing really good,” Ramos-Vinolas told ATPTour.com. “Every match is different so [Thursday] is another chance to play good and I will try for sure.”

Ramos-Vinolas will meet Japan's Taro Daniel for a place in the semi-finals. The Spaniard last reached a semi-final in February 2018 in Quito.

Before his semi-final, Ramos-Vinolas remembered the “First Time” he felt like he belonged on the ATP Tour, why he was glad he splurged for first class for the first time, and why he didn't buy a new Peugeot with his first big prize money check.

First pinch-me moment on the ATP Tour
The first time I won an ATP match in Barcelona in 2010. It's my home tournament... I passed the qualies and I won my first match and then I beat Fernando Gonzalez, who was No. 12 in the world.

I was No. 161. It was maybe one of the best moments of my career. It was on Court 1, which is not the centre court, but it's quite big.

Everybody there was supporting me, and obviously my level was worse than Fernando Gonzalez, but I fought like crazy and I won... I still remember the feeling: I was really happy. Everybody was thinking that it was not possible.

So they were supporting me like crazy, like when a big football team is playing against maybe one from the second division, and the second division team wins. Everyone was supporting me like crazy. It was a great atmosphere.

First thing I bought with prize money
Ha, ha. I try to save as much as I can because after tennis, I don't know what I'm going to do.

First autograph/photo I got
I don't remember because I don't like photos or autographs. I didn't ask. When I went to the tournament in Barcelona, when I was really young, I was more trying to watch how they played more than wanting an autograph or a photo... I watched Bruguera, Corretja, Moya, Albert Costa.

First time I flew first class
In 2011, I was in Houston... I lost on Thursday night and I had to play qualies in Monte-Carlo on Saturday, and I had my flight Friday afternoon... I took business and I arrived the same day and I played really good, no pressure... I lost the last qualifying but the first match I played really good.

Ramos-Vinolas Beats Verdasco In Repeat Of 2016 Båstad Final

Albert Ramos-Vinolas won a repeat of the 2016 Swedish Open final on Wednesday by defeating second seed and fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 46 minutes for a place in the quarter-finals.

Verdasco, who also finished as runner-up in 2013, had won two of their previous three meeting at the ATP Tour 250 clay-court tournament in 2014 and 2017. World No. 99 Ramos-Vinolas saved eight of nine break points he faced against Verdasco, who broke serve for the first time at 2-5 in the second set. Now with a 12-5 record in Båstad, Ramos-Vinolas next faces Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina or Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena.

Fabbiano defeats fourth seed Sonego

At last week's Swedish Open, Albert Ramos-Vinolas defeated Fernando Verdasco and Roberto Carballes Baena in back-to-back matches to reach the semi-finals.

The 31-year-old is half way to repeating that feat at the J. Safra Sarasin Swiss Open Gstaad after beating Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-6(4) on Wednesday to book another meeting with Carballes Baena.

Ramos-Vinolas recorded his 19th victory in 36 tour-level matches this year after one hour and 42 minutes, winning 72 per cent of service points en route to victory (48/67). The World No. 85 has now claimed four victories from nine FedEx ATP Head2Head clashes against the 2011 runner-up. Carballes Baena advanced to his second quarter-final in as many weeks after overcoming Stefano Travaglia 6-2, 6-4 in 80 minutes.
