De Minaur's Rise Shows It's All About Winning The Right Points, Not Every Point

In July 2017, Alex de Minaur was grinding his way through $15K Futures tournaments in Portugal. The 18-year-old Australian was learning the game, earning his stripes, and laying the foundation for his pro career.

Fast forward to July 2018 and the 19-year-old from Sydney is now one of the hottest players on the ATP World Tour. He has jumped from No. 244 to No. 45 in 12 months, and has only 30 ATP Rankings points to defend through the rest of the 2018.


Look out world.

An Infosys ATP Beyond The Numbers analysis of De Minaur’s meteoric rise up the ATP Rankings once again uncovers that all points are not created equal in our sport.

Consider these 2018 metrics the next time you get disappointed about losing a point in your match:

De Minaur's win/loss record is a healthy 16-13.

He has won $609,891 in prize money.

He made the finals of the Citi Open, an ATP World Tour 500-level event, in Washington last week, and also reached the finals of the Sydney International, an ATP World Tour 250-level event, in January.

He has actually lost 14 more points than he has won (2210 won / 2224 lost).

In 2018, De Minaur’s ATP Ranking has climbed from No. 208 to No. 45, but you would never know it from looking at the amount of points he has won and lost.


The reality of tennis is that the margins between winning and losing are razor thin. A point or two won at the right time in Washington can help launch a career. A point or two lost in Cincinnati can stop momentum in its tracks.

De Minaur is excelling more on the return side of the game than serving so far. He is currently ranked No. 47 on the Infosys ATP Return LEADERBOARD, powered by Infosys Nia Data, but drops down to No. 64 when serving.


What De Minaur does do well is perform under pressure. He is 18th best on tour in the past 52 weeks in winning tie-breaks at 61.5 per cent, and 15th best with deciding sets won, at 66.7 per cent.

De Minaur is currently in third place in the ATP Race To Milan, behind Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The top seven will qualify automatically for the Next Gen ATP Finals, to be held 6-10 November in Milan, while the eighth spot will be reserved for the winner of an all-Italian qualifier tournament to be held just prior to the prestigious 21-and-under event.

Who knows how much further his Race position is going to climb when that tournament kicks off on 6 November.

Alex de Minaur – After starting the 2018 season ranked outside the Top 200, the 19-year-old Aussie has reached a pair of ATP 250 hard-court finals in 2018, most recently in Washington, D.C., to help boost his ranking to No. 43. He and Shapovalov are the only teens in the ATP’s Top 100. De Minaur made his US Open debut as a wild card in 2017, falling to Dominic Thiem in the opening round. This year’s event will be his seventh Slam main-draw appearance, and he is coming off his best performance yet – a third-round run at Wimbledon.

#NextGenATP Clash Set: Tiafoe To Meet De Minaur

One year ago, #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe suffered heartbreak in the opening round of the US Open. He was just a set from eliminating five-time champion Roger Federer in the first round for the first time in the Swiss’ 17th appearance at Flushing Meadows. But Tiafoe fell just short of thrilling his home crowd, losing in five sets.

There was no such disappointment for Tiafoe on Tuesday, as the Delray Beach Open champion won a match at his home Grand Slam for the first time with an upset of 29th seed Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. After hitting a final passing shot right on the line, the 20-year-old turned to his team and flexed his muscles in celebration.

Tiafoe will next face another #NextGenATP star in Aussie Alex de Minaur. The 19-year-old was ruthless in his 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 dismissal of reigning Istanbul champion Taro Daniel. De Minaur was in total control as he clocked 31 winners to his Japanese opponent's 11 and just 15 unforced errors to 37.

De Minaur and Tiafoe are fourth and fifth in the ATP Race To Milan, respectively, as both players battle to appear at the Next Gen ATP Finals for the first time. This will be their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting.



It has been a breakthrough season for Tiafoe, who had never reached an ATP World Tour quarter-final prior to the New York Open in February. He then claimed his maiden title in Delray Beach and reached his second final in Estoril. Tiafoe now owns 25 tour-level wins in 2018 alone after tallying a total of nine before the campaign.

Another #NextGenATP competitor, Spaniard Jaume Munar, earned his second five-set victory of the year with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-1 triumph against Belgian Ruben Bemelmans. Munar had just one tour-level win before starting the 2018 campaign and he was No. 208 in the ATP Rankings this week in 2017, but he is now at a career-best No. 85 and on the rise.

Munar will next try for his first win against a Top 20 opponent as he faces 13th seed Diego Schwartzman, who beat compatriot Federico Delbonis 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-2.

The #NextGenATP contingent continued to roll as Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz earned his first US Open victory, advancing with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(6), 3-0 lead when Italian Stefano Travaglia retired due to cramps. Hurkacz is currently ninth in the Race.

De Minaur, Cilic Dash Into 3R; Benneteau Bids Farewell

Can anyone stop Alex de Minaur? The Aussie teen is blitzing the competition at the US Open and he earned a comprehensive win over fellow #NextGenATP Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 as Day 4 continued.

Fans on Court 17 were treated to a glimpse into the future as day turned to dusk on Thursday at Flushing Meadows. At No. 4 and No. 5 in the ATP Race To Milan, respectively, De Minaur and Tiafoe contested what could go down as a critical battle in both players' quests to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals.

It was just the second meeting in the budding rivalry between the Aussie and the American. De Minaur previously rallied from a set down to take a qualifying encounter at the 2017 Brisbane International.

"I'm very happy," said De Minaur. "Especially after Wimbledon where I had an amazing run. To be able to back it up in the next major, I'm really proud of my efforts. It shows how I'm doing things in the right direction. Just got to keep focused, keep trying to get better.

"I've known Frances for a very long time. Coming up in the juniors, all that. Obviously I'm a year younger than him. When I was playing the juniors, he was pretty much already playing seniors. But we've always been close. He's one of the nicest guys out there. Nothing but respect for him."

After dropping just three games in a first-round rout of Taro Daniel, the Sydney native surged out the gate against Tiafoe, relinquishing a mere four games through the opening two sets. Tiafoe showed flashes of his Top 50 game in the third set, breaking three times to force a fourth. But De Minaur's superior agility and defence rattled the Maryland native, who leaked 51 unforced errors.

De Minaur is riding a wave of momentum after reaching his biggest final at the Citi Open last month (l. to Zverev). He is into the third round for a second straight Grand Slam and first at the US Open. The Aussie joins Denis Shapovalov and Taylor Fritz as #NextGenATP stars still alive in New York. He will face 2014 champion Marin Cilic next.

Cilic was at his ruthless best in defeating Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 on Grandstand. The seventh seed has dropped just nine games en route to the third round. He conceded a mere 15 points on serve during the 79-minute affair.

"I think he's, with his style, a very consistent player, very tough physically as well, fast, plays great tennis," Cilic said about De Minaur. "Obviously very steady from the baseline, putting a lot of pressure, as well. He's got nice fighting spirit, which is nice to see with the youngsters. Definitely going to be a good challenge for me."

Julien Benneteau plays his final professional match on Thursday in New York

In other action, Julien Benneteau played the final match of his 18-year professional career. The former World No. 25 in singles and No. 5 in doubles succumbed to Jan-Lennard Struff in five sets, falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. The rollercoaster match lasted two hours and 58 minutes on Court 11, with Struff seizing seven of 11 break chances. He is enjoying his best run in New York in his fifth main draw appearance.

Benneteau bade farewell just two days after springing an upset over 22nd seed Marco Cecchinato, his 273rd victory at the tour-level. Highlights of the Frenchman's career include 10 ATP World Tour final appearances and eight victories over Top 5 opponents. Also a decorated doubles star, he lifted 12 tour-level trophies, including the Roland Garros title in 2014 with Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Benneteau Lists Favourite Memories

"I don't really realize it," said Benneteau. "Some guys told me in the locker room, 'Now you know that you're not going to play ever, it must be a really strange feeling'. But I have to say that for the moment I don't feel this way. Maybe it's a little bit too early. Maybe it will take some time to absorb it and to have more emotions, some more feelings.

"I was still focused on the tournament, on trying giving everything I could to win this match. For the moment, I am just not disappointed after a loss because it's okay."

Struff will next face David Goffin on Saturday. Goffin, seeded 10th, dismissed an in-form Robin Haase 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2, booking his spot in the third round for the fourth time in five years. Haase, a quarter-finalist earlier this month at the Rogers Cup, had no answer for his Belgian opponent, who prevailed after two hours and 54 minutes.

Young Australian to next meet Herbert

Alex de Minaur is on a roll and closing in a spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals in November. The fast-rising 19-year-old moved to within one victory of a place in his third ATP World Tour final on Friday.

The seventh-seeded Australian overcame fourth seed Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-3, 7-6(7) in one hour and 43 minutes at the Shenzhen Open for a place in the semi-finals.

The Australian led 4-0 in the second set, but Dzumhur battled back from 1/5 in the tie-break and held one set point opportunity at 5/6.

"Everything was going according to plan, I was playing great tennis," De Minaur told ATPWorldTour.com. "Then, I relaxed a bit and my intensity wasn't as high as before, and he started to play better tennis. I got up 5/1 in the tie-break, almost home and dry, but he is such a good competitor he fought until the end."

Should World No. 40 De Minaur beat France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert, a 6-7(6), 7-6(1), 6-4 victor over Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, he will rise to a new career-high in the ATP Rankings. He began the year at No. 208.

With a 21-17 match record in 2018, De Minaur has reached finals at the Sydney International (l. to Medvedev) and the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. (l. to A. Zverev). He is currently in fourth position in the ATP Race To Milan.

"I feel like I'm really solid out there, making a lot of balls and playing smart tennis," said De Minaur. "I'm not making any unforced errors and I'm doing what I need to do."

Top seeds Ben McLachlan and Joe Salisbury will take on fourth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Rajeev Ram in the Shenzhen doubles final. McLachlan and Salisbury defeated third seed Roman Jebavy and Andres Molteni 6-4, 7-6(4) in 87 minutes, while Lindstedt and Ram beat Max Mirnyi and Philipp Oswald 7-6(4), 6-3 in 87 minutes.

Also in his section of the draw is #NextGenATP Aussie Alex de Minaur, who saved four match points in the second set before ousting Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-7(1), 7-6(5), 6-2 to reach the second round. Last week at the Shenzhen Open, the 19-year-old lost to Pierre-Hugues Herbert after holding two match points. But on Wednesday, he ended up on the right side of a similar equation.

“At the end of the day you just try to focus on that point. My attitude every single time I go out on court is just to fight until the end and leave it all out there,” De Minaur said of saving match points. “Tennis is a funny sport. Last week in Shenzhen I lost having two match points, so it could go either way. I just knew I had to keep pushing and make him beat me. At the end I was able to overturn that with some very long rallies and tough play and ended up getting the win, so I’m very proud of myself.”

De Minaur started the campaign at No. 208 in the ATP Rankings with just two tour-level match wins to his name. But in triumphing after three hours and six minutes, the World No. 38 earned his 22nd victory of 2018.

The Spain resident saved eight of the 11 break points he faced, and won 54 per cent of return points in the deciding set to advance. It was an interesting match of styles, as De Minaur is one of the speediest players on the ATP World Tour, and Simon limits the pace on his strokes to play a more tactical game, turning rallies into chess.

“Very tough match. He’s probably one of the trickiest guys out there to play, with a lot of experience. He’s been No. 6 in the world and just his style of play, especially on these courts where they’re quite slow and low-bouncing, it’s a bit of cat and mouse,” De Minaur said. “You’ve got to really think of what kind of gamestyle you want to play, because at the end of the day he’s going to want you to play the gamestyle that suits him and if you start doing that it’s going to be a long match. I managed to find a game style that worked for me today and I’m happy I executed.”

De Minaur, who’s No. 4 in the ATP Race To Milan for a spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals in November, will next clash against another #NextGenATP player in Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 5 seed. It will be the pair’s maiden FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting.
