Reilly Opelka (Rank: 197; Age: 20): Opelka, who is 6'11", is one of the tallest players on the ATP World Tour, and he brings a lethal serve like the other flamethrowers of the ATP World Tour, including 6'11" Ivo Karlovic and 6'10" John Isner. Opelka reached the semi-finals of the Newport Beach Challenger last week, falling to eventual champion Fritz.

#NextGenATP Opelka Stuns Top Seed To Reach Delray QF

American posts biggest win of his career over highest-ranked compatriot
Reilly Opelka is on a compatriot-slaying run at the Delray Beach Open after ousting top seed and defending champion Jack Sock on Wednesday night. The 6’11” #NextGenATP American, who contested his first ATP World Tour event of the season, brought down his more fancied countryman 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Opelka, the World No. 228 in the ATP Rankings, thumped 17 aces to Sock’s four in the pair’s first meeting. He had already downed fellow American Ryan Harrison in the opening round and could have met another of his countrymen, No. 6 seed John Isner in the quarter-finals.

Isner – a three-time Delray Beach Open semi-finalist – narrowly fell, though, to German Peter Gojowczyk 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 7-6(5). It is Gojowczyk’s third quarter-final of 2018 having already reached the last eight in Doha and Auckland.

For Opelka, taking down Sock was the biggest win of his young career. It was a match he admitted to having few nerves having practised with his top-ranked compatriot before.

“Yeah it's definitely a great win for me,” Opelka said. “Jack’s a guy I’ve always looked up to, the No. 1 American. I have a lot of respect for him. Definitely a big win, good for my confidence, just got to get ready for the quarter-final.

“I didn’t serve as well as I’d have liked to or as well as I usually do. I was really pleased with how I played from the baseline though. I thought I hit my forehand great and made it really tough for him to be offensive, which is his game.”

After a blistering end to his 2017 season, in which he claimed a maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Paris and qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, Sock has struggled to build on that run early in 2018. Defeat to Opelka sees his win-loss record for the year slip to 1-3.

“He was feeling it tonight, he was too good,” Sock said. “You’re not really ever in control against a seven-foot guy who can serve you off the court. Even after winning the first set it’s still 50-50 with his style of play.”

Steve Johnson has denied Milos Raonic back-to-back Delray Beach Open finals appearances with his first win over the Canadian on Wednesday. The American posted a 6-2, 6-4 result over the No.9 seed to reach the quarter-finals.

Johnson had fallen in three prior FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings with Raonic. He will next meet Russian Evgeny Donskoy, an earlier 7-6(6), 6-3 winner over American Donald Young.

“The first set kind of got away from him with a second break so that is always comfortable,” Johnson said.

“It was important to get those first points on my serve to give myself a little bit of breathing room because when you get down and he starts hitting balls hard for winners, it’s kind of out of your control.”

World No. 51 in the ATP Rankings, Johnson withstood 11 aces from the 27-year-old and lost just four points on his first serve to secure the result. It will be his first quarter-final appearance of 2018, a positive note in what has been by his own admission an up and down time of late.

“Still trying to keep my head above water and just take it one day at a time,” Johnson said. "Any chance you get to play more matches that always builds confidence.”

Raonic was in no way ready to apportion blame for his defeat on the blustery conditions disrupting his rhythm on Wednesday. The loss sees him fall to a 1-3 start to 2018.

“I’ve got to definitely review it, think about it, because that was a pretty poor level I put out there today. Not much to be happy with,” he said.

“I think he was just sharp. I’ve played him before so I knew what to expect. He was more aggressive today than other times. Was that my lack of creation, or was he just taking over and making me feel, in a lot of ways, silly out there? … I had a tough time with a lot of things today.”

Opelka knew he'd have his hands full going into the match against the world No. 64, considering his track record (now 0-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series) and Gojowczyk's current form. The end result didn't come as much of a surprise.

"I kind of expected it; he beat me the last time we played," Opelka said. "I never want to play him again, he's got my number. He does everything well and he's a great player."

BNP Paribas Primrose (Bordeaux, France): For the 11th time, the ATP Challenger Tour descended on the French city of Bordeaux. And the prestigious €106,000 event would celebrate its first American champion on Sunday. Reilly Opelka rallied from a set down to defeat home hope Gregoire Barrere 6–7(5), 6–4, 7–5 in two hours and 20 minutes, firing 22 aces and saving five of six break points faced.

"I served great, served a lot of aces from the first match and competed really hard," said Opelka. "I love it here. Even off the court I've been hanging out in the city a lot and enjoying my time. The architecture is incredible."

The title marked Opelka's first clay-court crown at any level and second victory overall on the Challenger circuit. He previously prevailed on the indoor hard courts of Charlottesville in 2016. The 20-year-old continues the youth movement in 2018, becoming the third-youngest winner this year, after Sunday's Heilbronn champ Rudolf Molleker (17) and Newport Beach titlist Taylor Fritz (20).

Opelka is on a roll on the dirt, posting an 11-2 mark over the past month, including semi-final finishes in Sarasota and Savannah. He soars 62 spots to No. 144 in the ATP Rankings and rises to eighth in the ATP Race To Milan. The American is now just 128 points behind Alex de Minaur for the coveted seventh position, with the Top 7 players born in 1997 and later qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals in November.

Opelka Retraces Chicago Roots

#NextGenATP American throws out the first pitch at the White Sox game on Labor Day
On Monday, people throughout the United States celebrated Labor Day. It is a special holiday that signals the conclusion of summer and pays tribute to the hard-working labourers that have shaped the country.

Barbecues, excursions to the beach and afternoon baseball are staples of the day, so needless to say it was an honour for Reilly Opelka to throw out the first pitch at the Chicago White Sox game. But for the #NextGenATP American, the moment carried added significance.

As the towering 6'11" right-hander stood on the edge of the mound and tossed a perfect strike, the entire Opelka clan watched with baited breath. The 21-year-old was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, but has Chicago blood coursing through his veins. This week, he is competing for the first time in the U.S. metropolis, as the Oracle Challenger Series Chicago makes its debut.


"It was unbelievable," Opelka told ATPWorldTour.com. "Throwing out the first pitch is literally the coolest thing you can do if you're a Chicago sports fan. You can't do that in any other sport. There's nothing like that in basketball and football. It's a big tradition in baseball. My family was so stoked that I was doing this.

"Every single person in my family was born in Chicago, besides me. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, cousins, uncles. Everyone. My great-grandparents were born in Chicago on both sides of the family. My dad has nine brothers and sisters and they all live here. This is home. During the summer, this is literally the best place in the world."

Opelka's parents moved to Michigan in the mid-90s, where he was born. His father George works as a software designer for mortgage appraisers and despite living outside of Chicago, they would visit multiple times each year.

"I remember I was eight years old, I was in Palm Coast, Florida, and my grandma sent me a White Sox jersey before the World Series. I think it was a Paul Konerko jersey. I wore it every day of the series and they swept the Astros to win the whole thing. I remember going to bed and waking back up for the last game. My dad woke me up because it got close.

"And every year for my birthday, my parents would have Lou Malnati's deep dish pizza shipped to my house (in Florida) on dry ice. They still do it. Every year. I just love the food here. We go to Navy Pier every summer and watch fireworks, but we're all big foodies."

Champion at the BNP Paribas Primrose in Bordeaux, Opelka celebrated his first clay-court crown in May. But he has since struggled with a bout of mononucleosis, which left him bed-ridden since early July.

"I'm feel a lot better, but it was a rough stretch," Opelka added. "I had it at Wimbledon, but I wasn't diagnosed with it until a couple weeks later. I was full body cramping after my match in Winnetka. I went five weeks without doing anything, just staying inside. But I was eating as healthy as can be and slept a ton. My fitness wasn't where it needed to be and even now I'm getting my fitness back from being inside for so long.

"It's weird. You don't compete for seven to eight weeks and there are little details you lose. Just how you handle some points, some moments. Being up a set and a double break in my first match here helped a lot. I didn't face any crazy pressure moments. I was happy. I could have played a few more sets."

At No. 173 in the ATP Rankings, Opelka continues his Top 100 quest in Chicago. He will face close friend and fellow #NextGenATP Michael Mmoh in the second round on Thursday. It will be their fourth encounter on the ATP Challenger Tour, with Mmoh prevailing in Charlottesville in 2015 and Opelka getting revenge there the following year. And in 2017, Opelka also prevailed on the grass of Nottingham.
