It marked the second straight year that an 18 year old had clinched his third crown, with Fritz joining Hyeon Chung. One of 10 teens in the Top 200 of the Emirates ATP Rankings, the Rancho Santa Fe native rises to a career-high position of World No. 154. He will seek his first Grand Slam main draw berth when he battles in Australian Open qualifying this week.

Australian Open 2016: debiut Fritza w Wielkim Szlemie.

World No. 154 Fritz continued his surge towards the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings with a stunning 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory over Mischa Zverev. The 18-year-old American stormed back from a 0-4 deficit in the third set, reeling off six straight games to upend the German. The scorching hot Fritz improved to 25-4 overall since turning pro last September, having also added a third ATP Challenger Tour title last week in Happy Valley.

“It feels great, what an amazing way to do it,” said Fritz, who is one of seven teens in the main draw. “I was playing solid and then so many times I was asking myself: ‘What do I do?’ There were so many points where I thought I didn’t think I could possibly play better and he beat me on them. I told myself to keep competing and not to give up and if he could keep doing what he was doing, then that was too good and I’ve got to give it to him.

“I got on top. I started playing really well, got a lot of momentum on my side, was getting really pumped up and was able to finish it.”

With four teens in the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings, the youth movement on the ATP World Tour is rapidly gaining momentum.
The past 15 months have seen three 18 year olds crack the Top 100, and if Taylor Fritz has his way, the American will join the exclusive club very soon. World No. 44 Borna Coric entered in October 2014, weeks before turning 19, followed by No. 51 Hyeon Chung in April of last year and No. 83 Alexander Zverev a month later.
"I've decided I want to be in the Top 100 by the end of the year," Fritz told ATPWorldTour.com. "That's my main goal. I want to finish the year in the Top 100."

Rising to the precipice of the Top 150, at World No. 154, after clinching his third ATP Challenger Tour title on Sunday in Happy Valley, Australia, Fritz is enjoying unprecedented success at such a young age. The Rancho Santa Fe, California native denied Dudi Sela 7-6(7), 6-2 in the final, improving his sublime Challenger record to 22-5. With only 35 Emirates ATP Rankings points to defend before October, Fritz is in strong shape to achieve his goal.
"I'm really excited (to be playing at the professional level). I've been playing the juniors for the past couple of years and now I'm excited to play the whole pro schedule and see where I end up.
"It feels really good to be having these wins against guys who will be in the Australian Open qualifying. I'm going to take it one match at a time and hopefully tomorrow I can get the win. I'm feeling good regardless going into the Australian Open."

Fritz will next head to the Australian Open to contest his third Grand Slam qualifying event and first down under. The last American teen to qualify for a major was Tommy Paul just a few months ago at the US Open.
Fritz, who notched his first ATP World Tour match win on debut in Nottingham (d. Carreno Busta) last year, is ready for more tour-level success in 2016, thanks to a dedicated off-season training block.
"It would be to do all the right things on and off the court,” Fritz said of his New Year’s resolution. “That is, be healthy, work hard all the time and be more of a professional off the court.
"I've worked on a lot of fitness in the off-season. I've tried to put on a little weight and get stronger, which I was able to do. On court, I worked on a lot of movement, transitioning and slicing. They were parts of my game that weren't all there. I think I made a lot of progress."

Oglądałem pierwszego seta i naprawdę byłem pod wrażeniem. Steve grał solidnie, ale przegrał najważniejsze piłki, co przy walce z 18-latkiem nie jest często spotykaną sytuacją.

Co do arsenału Fritza, to bh bardzo stabilny, fh trochę mniej, ale z kolei łatwość szybkich strzałów po krosie godna zauważenia. Jak tylko może, to atakuje, szczególnie po swoim pierwszym serwisie, który jest naprawdę dobry.

Największe pola do poprawy to drugi serwis (wygląda, jakby szedł bez kicka, a wyłącznie z boczną rotacją) i gra przy siatce, której wyraźnie unika.

Tak czy siak będą z niego ludzie, mi najbardziej się spodobał z młodych.

Charakter młodego mistrza pokazał Fritz. Po dramatycznej końcówce pokonał Bennego Beckera i awansował do pierwszego półfinału turnieju ATP. Rzecz oczywiście o Memphis 2016. Taylor został najmłodszym Amerykaninem w półfinale turnieju ATP od czasów Changa (17 lat na Wembley 89).

The Californian made a quick turnaround, both physically and mentally, after Thursday night’s upset win over second seed and practice partner Steve Johnson and became the youngest American in an ATP World Tour semi-final since 17-year-old Michael Chang won the 1989 Wembley title.

Nie jestem fanem jego techniki, niepewny wolej, a z takim forehandem atakowanie niższych piłek będzie zawsze jakimś problemem, zwłaszcza, że podaje trawę za najlepszą nawierzchnię.

Ciekawe, jak sobie ułoży schedule, Delray Beach, potem pewnie spróbuje w mastersach (nie powinien dostać jakiegoś WC?), dobrze byłoby w kwietniu jeszcze pograć na amerykańskim clayu, potem wyjazd do Europy, ciekawe gdzie zagra na trawie (dobrze byłoby więcej pograć), no i potem sezon na hardzie za Oceanem - on do US Open broni ... 24 punkty, więc top50 w tym sezonie jest na luzie do zrobienia. Być może dobrze byłoby teraz ponabijać jeszcze w challengerach, żeby potem nie było szkoda tych ~200 punktów za Sacramento i Fairfield.

Fritz osiągnął finał w zaledwie 3. swoim starcie na poziomie ATP. Szybciej (z obecnego Top-10) ta sztuka udało się tylko Ferrerowi - za 2. startem.

Fritz Flies Into First Final, Nishikori Awaits

There seems to be no stopping Taylor Fritz this week at the Memphis Open. The 18-year-old American put himself in elite company on Saturday, rallying past Ricardas Berankis 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first ATP World Tour final. He will square off against top seed and three-time defending champion Kei Nishikori for the title.
At 18 years and three months, Fritz became the youngest American to reach a tour-level final since then 17-year-old Michael Chang won the Wembley 1989 crown. He is also the first American teenager in a title match since Andy Roddick finished runner-up in Montreal in 2002, and is the second teen finalist on the ATP World Tour this year, following Borna Coric's run in Chennai (l. to Wawrinka).
"It's the best feeling in the world," said Fritz. "To be here and think that it's the final is crazy. I'm really excited that I got to this level and I've proven myself that I belong here.
"It's amazing to have this support. I feel so loved here. It's the best feeling in the world. I owe a lot to the crowd pumping me up."
Fritz was on the ropes early as Berankis ran away with the opening set behind three breaks of serve. But the wild card shed his nerves as the match progressed. Cool under pressure as he has been all week, Fritz stayed the course after being broken to love in the seventh game of the second set. He broke back immediately and would force a decider. In the third, the 18 year old earned a pair of breaks on Berankis double faults, eventually closing it out on his fifth match point after one hour and 41 minutes.
"I honestly felt he was unbeatable in the first set," Fritz added. "He was making me look awful. I didn't think there was much I could do. I tried to change things up in my game. He was returning my serves and putting me on defence. In the second set, I told myself that the way I was serving wasn't going to cut it. I needed to crank it up a lot. I started hitting my serves 5-10 miles per hour faster. That was the biggest difference. Once I was holding my serve, it put pressure on him. That's what allowed me to play my game more and allowed me to win."
Fritz, who closed his 2015 campaign with two ATP Challenger Tour titles (Sacramento & Fairfield) in three finals and opened 2016 with a win in Happy Valley, Australia, is making a seamless transition to the ATP World Tour. Competing in just his third tour-level event, he is already well ahead of the curve:

The California native's rise to the precipice of the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings is astounding, having resided at World No. 935 a year ago. He is bidding to become the first teen to earn an ATP World Tour title since Marin Cilic in New Haven 2008, when he battles Nishikori on Sunday. The most recent American winner in Memphis was Andy Roddick in 2011. Roddick, Andre Agassi and Stefan Edberg are the lone teenage champions in the 40-year history of the ATP World Tour 250 event.
Berankis, meanwhile, was competing in his second ATP World Tour semi-final, following a run to the last four in Los Angeles 2012.
"I was very close," said Berankis. "I played very well in the first set. Everything was working. In the second set, I started to play a little more careful and Taylor took his chances and was all over me... You always have to keep up the plan and continue the same way throughout the match."
Three-time defending champion Nishikori awaits Fritz in the final after fighting past home hope and 2010 Memphis titlist Sam Querrey 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in Saturday's second semi-final. The Japanese padded his mastery of deciding set matches, improving to 86-24 in his career. After dropping the opener in 30 minutes, he secured early breaks in both the second and third sets, before sealing the win on his third match point. It was deja vu at the Racquet Club of Memphis, with Nishikori also trumping Querrey in the 2015 semi-finals.
"It was a tough start for me," said Nishikori. "He was playing really good tennis, especially with his serve. He was hitting deep and flat and I was on defence all the time. I found my rhythm in the second set, was hitting balls deep and the tactics were working. I tried to be more focused and played more aggressive."
World No. 7 Nishikori will contest his 16th tour-level final in total, seeking title No. 11. He is bidding to become the fourth active player to win four straight titles at an ATP World Tour level tournament (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic) and the second four-time winner in Memphis (Connors).
"We practised a lot in California," Nishikori added, referring to Fritz. "We've never played in a match, but I know he has a great serve and he's a little like Sam. He hits a big forehand, backhand and serve. You can see he's playing great here and I have to have good tactics for tomorrow."
