FIRST-TIME WINNER SPOTLIGHT ROBIN HAASE

Obrazek
Robin Haase is the eighth first-time winner
on the ATP World Tour this season.

Robin Haase became the eighth first-time winner on the ATP World Tour this season when he edged the more experience Albert Montanes 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the final of the Bet-At-Home Cup Kitzbühel. ATPWorldTour.com caught up with the champion after his victory.

How does it feel to breakthrough and win your first ATP World Tour title?
It’s an amazing feeling. I’m really happy that I won. It was one of the goals this year to make it into a semi-final or final, and maybe win it. I was close a few times when I played good but actually lost to good players. To win this match and beat good players this week was really great.

What did you do well to put five matches together and win the title this week?
Definitely I served well from the beginning. Today, actually, in the second set I served bad, but that was the only time and the rest of the tournament I served really, really well. Then I attacked with my forehand and I was defending really, really good this week, so I didn’t make a lot of unforced errors. I think was the key of this week.

You had a knee injury two years ago and last year you were awarded ATP Comeback Player of the Year. Looking back, with all the hours of work you’ve spent, does this mean even more to you?
It’s definitely a reward of putting so much practice and effort into coming back. It’s so hard to get back from an injury and especially the one I had. I was out for one and a half years, I didn’t play a match and I wasn’t even sure if I could come back. I was crying sometimes at home because I just didn’t know what to do anymore. I saw so many specialists and in the end they couldn’t really help me. It’s great that after being Comeback Player of the Year I’m now a first-time ATP winner.

You are the first Dutchman to win an ATP World Tour title since Martin Verkerk seven years ago, how does that feel for you to put your country back in that circle?
It’s definitely a great feeling. To be now a winner and in the roll of names and the statistics of ATP winners is great.

With you and Thiemo de Bakker leading the way in the Netherlands, how do you see the future of Dutch tennis?
We have a young Davis Cup team. At the moment Thiemo is not playing so well, he’s struggling a little bit, but he has the game to comeback pretty easily if everything fits together. But now we have another great player in Thomas Schoorel. He’s two metres, two centimetres, he’s serving and hitting his forehand unbelievably hard and I think a lot of players are scared to play him, especially in the first round when you don’t yet have rhythm. So I think we have a great team and Dutch tennis is definitely going upwards.

By winning your first ATP World Tour title you also broke into the Top 50 for the first time. How does that feel and was it one of your goals coming into the season?
My goal is still to be Top 50 at the end of the year, because I need to defend a lot of points, although I won 250 this week. It’s definitely a goal from here on. Also, a goal was to make it into my first final and hopefully win a tournament, so it’s great that I won right away and now I’m looking forward to some more success.

You’re pretty consistent on all surfaces; did you expect your first title to come on clay? What is your favourite surface?
It’s hard to say. I can play really well on grass, I showed this year at Wimbledon and two years ago at Wimbledon playing [Lleyton] Hewitt and [Rafael] Nadal, lost to them in five sets. I can play on every court. My best semi-final was on clay, so of course if you look at that maybe you think it happens on clay first – winning a tour title. But definitely I can win on hard court as well because I beat players like [Juan] Monaco, [Andy] Murray, [Tomas] Berdych, [Ivan] Ljubicic, these are big names on hard courts. So I think hopefully I can win one on hard court as well.

Now that you have won your first title, will you change your goals for the rest of the year? Is there anything specific you want to achieve?
Well now, of course, I want another one or to reach another final. But I don’t immediately want to say ‘I now want to go to the Top 30,’ because as I said, I need to defend also a lot of points because I won a lot of Challengers last year. I think step-by-step and I’m improving all the time and this is a big step for me. If I’m around this spot at the end of the year, I think I will have played a good, decent year on the ATP World Tour and hopefully next year I can get higher.

Is there anyone in particular who has helped you get this far in your career?
Definitely, of course, my coach. We’ve been working together for six years. Even in my injury time we were still working together, and of course he did some side things because it was a lot of money to pay when you’re not earning anything, but he always wanted to work with me and that gave me a lot of confidence. My family and friends are always there for me if it’s tough, and I have a lot of people I can talk to if there’s something, so it’s great.

Are there any former players who were an idol for you when you were a kid?
My idol was always Andre Agassi. I loved his character on the court and loved the way he played. I know as a young kid I wanted to wear the same things, use the same racquet. I sometimes even wanted to play the same way, but I noticed really quickly that that was not my game.

When you’re off the court, are there any interests or hobbies that you like?
I like watching other sports live, not so much on TV. On TV I prefer to watch some TV shows, funny shows or some action like ‘24’. I love to read as well; since I quit school I’ve read a lot of books and it doesn’t really matter what kind, if it’s a thriller or even Lord of the Rings, also biographies of athletes or musicians. It’s nice to do something with your free time. I read books in English, Dutch and German. For example I read Andre Agassi’s autobiography in English, but I read Boris Becker’s in German, and lots of thrillers I actually read in Dutch.

Haase Captures First Title

Obrazek
Robin Haase is the eighth
first-time winner on the ATP
World Tour this season.

World No. 53 Robin Haase captured his first ATP World Tour title on Saturday as he overcame the more experienced Albert Montanes, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the final of the Bet-At-Home Cup Kitzbühel.

The 24-year-old Dutchman, who was contesting his first ATP World Tour final, is the eighth first-time winner on the tour this year, and the second in as many weeks following Alexandr Dolgopolov’s victory in Umag last week.

As winner of the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tennis tournament, Haase received 250 South African Airways 2011 ATP Ranking points and €72,600 in prize money. The Hague native is the first Dutchman to win an ATP World Tour trophy since Martin Verkerk captured Amersfoort in 2004.

"It’s an amazing feeling. I’m really happy that I won," said Haase. "It was one of the goals this year to make it into a semi-final or final, and maybe win it. I was close a few times when I played good but actually lost to good players. To win this match and beat good players this week was really great."

Haase had impressed en route to the final, taking out second seed Feliciano Lopez and sixth seed Andreas Seppi in a heavy-duty Thursday, and held strong in the opening set of the final, withstanding five break points before breaking Montanes in the 10th game.

Former World No. 22 Montanes responded in the second set, breaking to lead 2-1. Haase drew level in the sixth game, but immediately surrendered his serve and Montanes went on to level the match. Undeterred, though, Haase raced to a 5-0 lead in the deciding set and confidently closed out victory in two hours.

"Definitely I served well from the beginning [of the week]," assessed Haase. "Today, actually, in the second set I served bad, but that was the only time and the rest of the tournament I served really, really well. Then I attacked with my forehand and I was defending really, really good this week, so I didn’t make a lot of unforced errors. I think was the key of this week."

The 30-year-old Montanes was contesting his 10th ATP World Tour final and dropped to a 5-5 record. Since losing his first four finals, he had gone unbeaten in five championships, most recently winning the MercedesCup in Stuttgart (d. Monfils) just over a year ago.

"It's a pity. But I knew that it was going to be difficult because he was playing very well during the whole week," said Montanes. "I played well too. I had my opportunities in the first set but couldn't take advantage of it.

"After winning the second set I started feeling a bit tired. The last few days were very intense; I played two matches during one day and against Juan [Ignacio Chela] it was a hard match too. I couldn't maintain my rhythm in the end and I have to congratulate Robin for a spectacular week here in Kitzbühel. I wish him the best for the future."

The Barcelona resident, who notched his 200th tour-level win on Friday, was bidding to become the eighth different Spanish winner on the ATP World Tour this season.

THE BIOFILE ROBIN HAASE

Obrazek
Robin Haase won his first ATP World
Tour title in Kitzbuhel.

Robin Haase reveals a funny tennis memory, his favourite player to watch and his hobbies and interests in this biofile...

First Tennis Memory: "I was two or something. A long time ago. The first thing that I remember is that I played with my parents just on a court. Hit as many balls as I could."

Tennis Inspirations: "When I was younger, because my family all played tennis, I always had to go with them, with my older brother and my older sister, just when they practiced. So that was my inspiration of course, to play as well. And from the top players my idol was always Agassi."

Nicknames: "Most of the time they call me by my last name. In Holland they call me Schlubber."

Hobbies/Interests: "Read a lot of books, watch a lot of TV series. I love to watch a lot of other sports as well. Of course when I'm home I like to do stuff with my friends."

Favorite Sport Outside Tennis: "That's difficult. Any ball game actually. Basketball. And I like ice hockey as well to watch."

Last Book Read: "Sampras actually, on the plane to here. Now I'm reading Agassi."

Favorite Movies: "The classical movies, I like The Shawshank Redemption, thrillers."

Favorite TV Shows: "I'm really into Heroes and Lost right now. And I like Entourage as well."

Pre-Match Feeling: "Actually I try not to think about the match as much because then I get nervous. I just like to hang out with my coach and not stay alone in the locker room, and be around people. Then, 5-10 minutes before the match, warm up and that's when I really get into the mindset of the match."

Favorite Meal: "Lasagna."

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: "I don't know [laughs]."

Current Car: "I drive a Fiat, it's a sponsor car (red)."

Greatest Sports Moment: "I beat Andy Murray in front of the home crowd (Rotterdam)."

Most Painful Moment: "That I was injured and not able to play for 1 1/2 years, 18 months."

Favourite Tournament: "I like Australian Open. It's my favorite Grand Slam. The atmosphere, I love the country, I like the warm weather. Always some really nice matches. As well, Rotterdam and tournaments in Holland I really enjoy."

Closest Tennis Friends: "I'm good friends with Jarkko Nieminen, Michael Russell, Cilic."

Funniest Players Encountered: "I don't know."

Toughest Competitors: "Oh, for sure, they're at the top, so it's Federer, Nadal and Davydenko actually."

Favourite Players To Watch: "I enjoy watching Nalbandian. (Why?) I love his game. He's maybe the most all around player in the whole world. I think if he wouldn't have been that injured that much and would have been fitter, for sure, he would have been higher ranked than what he has been."

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: "I fell down after a win in Rotterdam. I jumped up in the sky and I fell down [smiles]. I beat Murray first round, then Berrer after a set and almost a break down."

Funny Tennis Memory: "Oh, a lot. Almost every day. That's why I enjoy it. I saw a guy miss like 15 or 16 break points and didn't know what to do. So after he had another break point and then at the second serve of the guy, he just turned around. And then watched. Then the guy hit a double fault [smiles]. (Where?) At a Future in Israel."

Best You Ever Felt On Court: "I played a good match in Amersfoort against Felix Mantilla once in the first round where I thought it would be a really long match. And I really killed him. (Reaction from him?) He was actually quite nice. I played him a week after, then it actually was a three-setter in a long match. I beat him as well. Not long after that he quit. I saw him a few times after, he was really a nice guy."

People Qualities Most Admired: "Being honest. Yeah, of course, when I'm playing in the tennis world, being competitive. Or be a sportsman."

Haase: I can worry Murray

Obrazek
Dutchman confident he can cause an upset

Robin Haase is confident he has the game to test the best in the world when he faces Andy Murray in the second round of the US Open.

The Dutchman has previously pushed the the likes of Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Rafael Nadal hard at grand slams - with Haase leading the latter 2-1 at Wimbledon before finally losing in five sets.

And Haase is hoping he can now build on these previous experiences.

Haase said: "I've played Nadal, Hewitt, (Novak) Djokovic here, I'm used to the big courts. I'm looking forward to another one. Against Nadal I almost made it and now I hope I can do it."

Haase beat Murray in their only previous meeting in Rotterdam in 2008 - and he is ready for the world No.4 at Flushing Meadows.

"If you look at my results, I can beat almost anyone," he said.

"I'll definitely have to keep my percentage of errors really low, because he's not making any errors most of the time."

"I'll have to be healthy and be there mentally for every point. And of course I need to serve well. I just need to play my best game and hit a lot of winners."

Haase make it a winning opener in Thailand

Seventh seed Robin Haase marked his Bangkok debut with a 6-3, 7-6(1) victory over local wild card Kittipong Wachiramanowong. The Dutchman broke serve four times from 11 opportunities and won 83 per cent of points on first serve for victory in 83 minutes.

I was a break up in the second set and thought I was going to win it easy because I was playing much better than him,” admitted Haase. “But on the big points he played some great shots. I knew that I didn’t need to worry if it got into a tie-break because I knew I had more experience than him and that was the really big advantage for me today.”

World No. 42 Haase enjoyed a career-best run of form over the summer. The 24 year old won his first ATP World Tour title in Kitzbuhel (d. Montanes), reached the semi-finals in Winston-Salem (l. to Benneteau), and led World No. 4 Andy Murray by two sets in the US Open second round before succumbing in five sets.

By the way, I am not going to Chennai this year. Had to withdraw. If someone wants to know why, one word: Visa.....

Organizatorzy twierdzą, że Haase jest zdrowy i mają dowody, że 27 grudnia miał już wizę. Podobno jednak kontuzja, tyle że nie chce o niej mówić.

AO12: wywiad po porażce w 1 rundzie.

Q. Talk about the particular challenges of playing Andy Roddick.

ROBIN HAASE: Well, I mean, everyone knows he serves really good. He kind of changed his game in the last few years, defending a little bit more, slicing more, trying to come to the net if he can.

But he doesn't mind to play long rallies. I don't like to play long rallies, as well. Actually, my plan was to make him run a little bit. But what happened is that I played one step too slow every time and then I need to run.

I think in the first set, he was lucky. I should have broken maybe once or even twice more. On breakpoints, he had two, three line balls where I almost asked for HawkEye, that close. I think if I can make one of those two games, I win the first set, and of course then the match is totally different because I probably going to play a little bit looser because I'm in front, and now it was the other way around.

Q. Do you think his style makes you hit more errors than you normally would?

ROBIN HAASE: I mean, he's really quick. He covers the court really well. So the point often ends with a fault or a winner.

So probably if you look at the stats in his match, players would hit probably more unforced errors than usual. But, I mean, I think that's with every top 20 player or top 30 player. You need to win against the guys. They don't give you anything. So, of course, you make more mistakes than you play against someone who is 100 in the world.
