Chilean Duo Claims Maiden Doubles Crown

Jarry/Podlipnik-Castillo triumph over Krajicek/Withrow in straight sets
Nicolas Jarry and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo are the men’s doubles champions in Quito following a 7-6(6), 6-3 victory over Austin Krajicek and Jackson Withrow in just over an hour of play.

For their victory in the Ecuadorian capital, Jarry and Podlipnik-Castillo add 250 points to their ATP Ranking and share $27,170 in prize money.

The Ecuador Open marks the first ATP World Tour title in either singles or doubles for the Chilean duo, with Podlipnik-Castillo reaching just one other doubles final (2017 Kitzbuhel w/Vasilevski) and Jarry only one match win in doubles, a round-of-16 victory in Vina del Mar with Christian Garin.

Jarry and Podlipnik-Castillo were dominant on serve all match, winning 91 per cent of their first serves and surrendering a break of serve just once at the start of the second set.

'Hyper' Jarry Rolls Fourth Seed In Rainy Rio

Chilean reaches maiden ATP World Tour quarter-final
In a rain-interrupted Wednesday, a pair of South Americans – Nicolas Jarry and No. 6 seed Diego Schwartzman – have surged into the Rio Open presented by Claro quarter-finals. Chilean Jarry started the day with an upset of No. 4 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, 7-5, 6-3, before Schwartzman breezed through an all-Argentine clash with Federico Delbonis 6-2, 6-3.

Top seed Marin Cilic was locked in a gripping battle with former top tenner Gael Monfils before rain cancelled the night’s play. The Croat had rebounded from dropping the opening set and saved a match point after a rain delay in the second set tie-break before rain returned with the pair locked at 3-6, 6-6 and 7-all in the tie-break.

“I was feeling very good but was a bit hyper, going for too much on the ball,” Jarry said of falling behind 3-5 in the first set. “I tried to not give any points to him and I broke him. I did a couple of good returns and after that he got a bit tighter and gave me the advantage for the rest of the match."

For Jarry, a win over Ramos-Vinolas marked his first win over a Top 20 opponent and landed him in a maiden ATP World Tour quarter-final.

“I’m happy to pull it over. I was getting very nervous,” the World No. 94 in the ATP Rankings said. “The last game that I broke him he didn’t have too much energy. I also lowered mine and I didn’t keep my focus on the things I had to do. A couple of big errors almost cost me that second set.

“It’s a tough match, Albert is one of the best clay-court players in the present. He’s a great guy and I’m very happy to be in the quarter-finals.”

The 22-year-old bounced back from 3-5 down in the opening set against the World No. 19. He finished up winning 10 of the last 13 games of the match and will next face either No. 7 seed Pablo Cuevas or Portugal’s Gastao Elias for a place in his first ATP World Tour semi-final.

“I’m just doing the same as I did last year – have fun on the court, train as hard as I can, stay very concentrated," Jarry said.

“Last year I had a great year in Challengers. I didn’t have the ranking to play ATP [events]. Now I have and I’m making the best out of it and I’m very happy for being able to do it.”

Schwarztman will face Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who upset seventh seed Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-3 to make the first tour-level semi-final of his career. The 22-year-old advanced to his first quarter-final two weeks ago at the Ecuador Open in Quito, where he lost to eventual champion Roberto Carballes Baena.

“This is a great victory for me,” Jarry said. “I played very solid. I stayed very strong with my head.... I’m very happy with the way that I served this match. It’s better than the other ones, so I hope to continue serving like this.”

Jarry saved all four break points he faced in the match, breaking once per set to move past the 2016 champion. It will be his first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against Schwartzman.

Chilean coming off his first ATP World Tour SF in Rio
Nicolas Jarry's fantastic February collected another win on Tuesday at the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo. The Chilean won 74 per cent of his first-serve points (34/46) for the match and saved both break points faced in the decider to fight past Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

“I'm happy to be able to get this great win. Dusan is a great clay-court player, and it's a great victory for me,” Jarry said.

The 22-year-old Jarry reached his first ATP World Tour quarter-final at the Ecuador Open three weeks ago and his first ATP World Tour semi-final last week at the Rio Open presented by Claro. Jarry lost to the eventual champion at both tournaments (l. to Carballes Baena in Quito; Schwartzman in Rio de Janeiro).

Jarry, at a career-high No. 73 in the ATP Rankings, will next meet sixth seed Guido Pella of Argentina, who beat #NextGenATP Frenchman Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Pella captured 64 per cent of his second-serve return points (23/36).

Home favourite Rogerio Dutra Silva upset seventh seed Tennys Sandgren 6-0, 6-4. But Dutra Silva's countryman Thomaz Bellucci wasn't as fortunate, falling to Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-3.

The 22-year-old Jarry has certainly made his mark on the ATP World Tour in 2018. Since reaching his first tour-level quarter-final in Quito earlier this month, Jarry has also made the semi-finals in Rio (l. to Schwartzman) and now the final eight in Sao Paulo.

"It’s amazing. It’s what everybody wants to do, not lose in first rounds,” Jarry said. “[You] win some matches, you gain a lot of confidence and now that I started this year playing at the ATP [World Tour] level and I’ve done these great results, I’m very happy and I’ll try to keep on going in this tournament as far as possible."

Chilean Nicolas Jarry advanced to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final at the Ecuador Open three weeks ago, following that up with his first semi-final last week in Rio de Janeiro. And the 22-year-old isn't slowing down, defeating top seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(3) in two hours, 46 minutes to become the first Chilean to reach back-to-back semi-finals since Fernando Gonzalez in 2009.

"I'm happy with this great result, I'm really happy for that victory," Jarry said. "It was similar to yesterday, with the loss in the first set. I had to stay very focused throughout the match. I'm happy with the way things have come out. Anyone could have won... I had to stay aggressive, attacking the ball."

Jarry, who finished 2017 at No. 100 in the ATP Rankings, is projected to claim a new career-high ATP Ranking on Monday of at least No. 66, pending his results for the rest of the week. He can climb higher with a strong performance in the semi-finals against Argentine Horacio Zeballos, who triumphed 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 against home favourite Rogerio Dutra Silva.

Kalendarz turniejów mocno mnie myli i trochę się gubię na jakim etapie jest Sao Paulo (Dubaj i Aapulco idą rundę szybciej).

Chyba się nie pomylę, pisząc, że Chilijczyk osiągnął dziś swój pierwszy zawodowy finał. Bardzo ładnie przełoży się to w poniedziałek na jego ranking.
