Sportsmaster Tennis Championship of Maui (Maui, Hawaii): Second seed and #NextGenATP star Hyeon Chung continued his recent ATP Challenger Tour dominance by picking up another title, rolling through fourth seed Taro Daniel of Japan 7-6(3), 6-1 in the championship match. The 20-year-old didn’t lose a set throughout the week and dropped an average of less than five games per match.

Chung now has eight Challenger titles and the win in Maui is his second on U.S. soil. He has now won at least one Challenger title for four straight years. He returns to the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings this week, sitting at No. 73. Chung also puts himself into contention to qualify for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.

#NextGenATP Korean Hyeon Chung recorded the biggest win of his career on Thursday when he knocked out World No. 16 Gael Monfils in a rain-interrupted encounter at the BMW Open by FWU.

Chung, who is currently No. 78 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, followed on from last week’s run to the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Monfils, who had been attempting to record his 400th match win. Play was suspended due to rain with Chung leading 6-2, 3-3, leading to a 90-minute delay.

Chung advanced to the semi-final earlier on Saturday, winning all three games against Slovakian Martin Klizan when their match resumed. Their quarter-final contest was suspended due to darkness on Friday with Chung leading 6-4, 3-6, 3-2.

Chung broke Denis Istomin seven times in scoring a convincing 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 win. The 21-year-old Korean only lost seven points on his first serve and was extremely efficient with his volleys, winning 12 of 13 trips to the net. He fired a backhand winner to wrap up the match after one hour and 51 minutes. Chung improves his FedEx ATP Head2Head Series over Istomin 2-1, including a win this April in Barcelona.

“I’m trying to focus all the time and enjoy myself on the court,” said Chung. “I’m mentally better than last year and a little stronger, which I think is the key.”

Chung has excelled on clay this season, reaching the semi-finals in Munich and defeating Alexander Zverev en route to a quarter-final finish in Barcelona. His top form has him at third in the Emirates ATP Race to Milan, which will determine who qualified for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals from 7 to 11 November.

Chung Strengthens Race To Milan Bid, Ousts Defending Finalist

Any hopes the defending Shanghai Rolex Masters finalist had of qualifying in the Race To London are in jeopardy after Hyeon Chung ousted ninth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-4, 6-3 on Monday.
The #NextGenATP Korean equalled the best win of his career with his victory over the No. 13 in the Emirates ATP Rankings (also d. No. 13 Goffin in Montreal) in his first ATP World Tour match since the US Open. Chung was never truly threatened against Bautista Agut, only facing three break points in the match, all of which he saved in the same game in the second set. He broke Bautista Agut three times, including in his final two service games to close out the match.
For Bautista Agut, it was a major blow to his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals. He entered the week in Shanghai at No. 16 in the Race, 825 points behind David Goffin in eighth. Last year, the Spaniard beat then-No.1 Novak Djokovic en route to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final (l. Murray).
It was an important win for Chung, who entered the tournament outside the cut in the Race To Milan. The 21 year old was eighth in the standings, just 22 points behind Daniil Medvedev for the seventh and final automatic spot. But since the Russian lost his opening-round match against No. 15 seed Lucas Pouille, Chung will leapfrog him in the Race.
Chung was not the only #NextGenATP player to claim a triumph on Monday, as American qualifier Frances Tiafoe upset World No. 38 Benoit Paire, 6-4, 6-4. The 19 year old broke the Frenchman to start the match, but after giving it right back did not face a break point throughout the rest of the match.
Tiafoe currently sits in ninth in the Race To Milan, and will remain 123 points behind Chung after both players advanced to the second round.
In an all-#NextGenATP match, qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas upset World No. 40 Karen Khachanov, 7-5, 6-3. It was a dominant performance by the Greek 19 year old, who did not face a break point in the match while taking advantage of two of his four opportunities to earn his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 main draw victory.
