Chung Receives 'Most Improved' Award

South Korea’s Hyeon Chung was Thursday honoured as the Most Improved Player of 2015 in the ATP World Tour Awards Presented by Moët & Chandon. The 19 year old received his award during a centre-court presentation at the Brisbane International, where he reached the second round.
Chung climbed more than 120 places from No. 173 in the Emirates ATP Rankings at the start of the year, winning four titles on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2015. He also reached the Shenzhen quarter-finals and is currently at a career-high of No. 51.
"I'm very proud of this award,” Chung said. “It meant more to me as a professional athlete to be recognised by my fellow players. Getting the award was a surprise for sure. I didn't begin the year with a specific rankings goal in mind. But I had some good opportunities, like getting a wild card in Miami, and qualifying for some other ATP tournaments. They were all great experiences and I'll continue to try to keep jumping up the rankings."

Chung Sees Djokovic In His Future

Youngster faces World No. 1 at Australian Open Monday

South Korean teenager Hyeon Chung was voted by his ATP World Tour peers as last year’s most improved player. On Monday at the Australian Open, we may just find out why.
Chung, who took up tennis as a young child for the purpose of improving his eyesight, will take on World No. 1 and hot Australian Open favourite Novak Djokovic on Rod Laver Arena. It will be Chung’s first meeting against the 10-time Grand Slam champion and his main draw debut at the year’s first major.
Despite the grand stage, don’t expect Chung to show too many nerves. After all, this is a guy who played – and won – the doubles final at the Asian Games in 2014 when the prize awaiting the champions was an exemption from South Korea’s compulsory two-year military service.
“At the beginning of the Games I didn’t think too much about it, but as I started getting closer to the final I started to get a little nervous as I knew I would get the exemption,” Chung told ATPWorldTour.com in Brisbane earlier this month.
Instead of a two-year military commitment, which would have severely impacted his tennis career, by winning gold Chung needed only to complete a four-week training camp during last year’s off-season. Although he enjoyed the experience, he’s the first to admit that he’s better suited to serving a tennis ball than serving as a sniper.
“I could barely see the target when I was shooting; I thought I’ll never be given an opportunity to shoot again. But it was a great experience as you get to know different people from different regions and different backgrounds. I made some new friends; understandably some people were a little jealous because after four weeks training I was getting out but it was just the start of their service.”
Had it not been for his eyesight, Chung may never have picked up a tennis racquet. It was his childhood doctor who recommended that he begin playing at age six as a means to improve his vision.
“Rather than just reading small letters, the doctor said it was better to go out on the tennis court and track the ball. That’s why I started. I’ve never considered wearing glasses on the court a disadvantage, because I’ve always worn glasses, even before I began to play tennis. It’s never been an issue for me.”
Last year, at No. 169 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Chung lost in the final round of qualifying at Melbourne Park and he did not play a tour-level match until the Miami Open in late March, when he received a wild card. Chung began 2015 playing six tournaments at the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures level; he ended it with seven ATP World Tour-level appearances (five in the main draw) and the last of his four Challenger titles of the year.
This year he is firmly in the main draw of the Australian Open at a career-high No. 51 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and comes into the tournament having pushed 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic to 7-5, 7-6(3) in the second round of the Brisbane International, following an impressive first-round win over big-serving Aussie Sam Groth.
At his last Grand Slam outing, Chung pushed Stan Wawrinka to three tie-breaks in the second round of the US Open.
“Stepping up from the Challengers to tour-level last year was a great experience, finding out that I am competitive with the best players in the world. It gave me some confidence and made me realise there is an opportunity if I keep working.
“Seeing my ranking improve so much did come as a bit of a surprise because at the beginning of the season I didn’t set a specific rankings goal. I had some good opportunities, like the wild card in Miami and qualifying into some other ATP World Tour tournaments, and they were great experiences. Now my goal is to just keep jumping up the rankings.”
Chung’s match with Djokovic is scheduled for third match on Rod Laver Arena.

HYEON CHUNG: Yeah.

Q. You're used to the big experience. Can you compare the matches?

Q. Did you sleep last night or were you too excited?
HYEON CHUNG: Yeah, I sleep very well last night. But before wake up, 30 minutes, I don't know why so much nervous. I eat breakfast, when I warming up before the match, I don't know, I can't eat anything because nervous.

Q. Your English is better than last year. Did you study?
HYEON CHUNG: Yeah, start last year.

Q. At your home?
HYEON CHUNG: No, with my friend. He was here, like, few days ago. He left because he has job something.

Q. Today was very hot. Temperatures were 35 degrees. Have you ever played in this temperature? Was there any difficulty to play like this?

Chung Returns In Nanchang Challenger

NextGen star Hyeon Chung is back after four months out due to injury, but he’s picking up right where he left off.
Competing in the first tournament of his comeback at the $50,000 ATP Challenger Tour event in Nanchang, China, the 20 year old from Korea has moved into the quarter-finals without dropping a set. Although he admitted that the rehab process took longer than expected, he’s now fully healthy and ready to make another climb up the Emirates ATP Rankings.
“After Roland Garros, I found out after I lost my [first-round] match that I had injured my abs,” said Chung. “I did nothing for two weeks and then slowly began training. I want to see now if I’m able to do everything that I could before.”
During his time away from the court, Chung said he was motivated by the success of other young Korean players on the ATP Challenger Tour, including Duckhee Lee and Soon Woo Kwon.
“We’re all friends,” said Chung. “Duckhee is playing Davis Cup now, but we all played the same tournaments growing up. We’re all pushing each other to get better.”
Chung made headlines last year for his rapid rise up the Emirates ATP Rankings, climbing from No. 169 to No. 51 in 12 months. He won four ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2015 and finished as runner-up in two other Challenger events. Chung also reached his first ATP World Tour quarter-final that October at the Shenzhen Open.
Having added new weapons to his game during his time away from the court, he’s optimistic about cracking the Top 50 of the Emirates ATP Rankings next year.
“I made a few changes to my serve and my balance on my forehand,” said Chung. “This week was my first match in four months, so it’s not great yet, but I’m going to keep trying. I just want to keep going and play more Challengers.”

Jedyną słuszną ścieżkę powrotu wybrał Chung (można rzec, że wręcz sugerowaną) i po finale w ubiegłym tygodniu, tym razem już nie miał sobie równych w Koahsiung. Wygrany finał nad Duckhee Lee dał 20-letniemu Koreańczykowi 6. tytuł CH w 9. finale (6-3).

Chung Prevails In All-Korean #NextGen Final

That did not take long. #NextGen star Hyeon Chung is back with a vengeance after missing four months with an abdominal injury. A week after reaching the final in Nanchang, China, the 20 year old lifted his sixth ATP Challenger Tour title on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Duckhee Lee at the OEC Kaohsiung Challenger in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Despite lasting just 75 minutes, the final was highly significant for both the growth of tennis in Asia and the continued rise of the Next Generation of ATP stars. Chung, 20, and Lee, 18, provided the first final between Koreans in Challenger history, with the elder countryman successfully defending his title. The second player to retain a Challenger title this year, joining Facundo Bagnis (Santiago), World No. 132 Chung is continuing his push towards a Top 100 return in the Emirates ATP Rankings.

"I am so happy to be back competing after missing most of the summer due to injury and be able to defend my title here in Kaohsiung," Chung told ATPWorldTour.com. "It is a great event and I really like playing here.

"It was a hard week with lots of tough matches including today against Duckhee, who I know very well. I am happy for him to reach his first Challenger final and it was an honour to play in an all-Korean final. I am looking forward to the rest of the Asian swing and will do my best to finish the year strong."

Chung is the 12th #NextGen winner on the ATP Challenger Tour this year, while Lee, who was appearing in his first final, was bidding to become the ninth teenage titlist. Teens are now 8-8 in finals in 2016.
