Federer's Encouragement Spurs On Tiafoe

Basking in the surrounds of a closed-roof home-crowd atmosphere on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Frances Tiafoe admits a five-set defeat to Roger Federer only serves as motivation. The #NextGenATP American fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to the No. 3 seed but the words of encouragement he received at net reassured him he was on the right track.
“Great year so. You're only getting better and better. Keep going, you're going to have one hell of a future,” Tiafoe said the Swiss great told him. With rain washing out most of the day’s play, a closed roof only amplified the electric New York City atmosphere on Tuesday night. Tiafoe was feeding off the home support.
“The crowd was getting behind me pretty good,” Tiafoe said. “I like to get the crowd pretty into it, especially in the fourth, when I was playing pretty much [playing] lights out.
“I was getting pretty hyped. They were liking that. I'm pretty sure they would have liked me to have sneaked that one out. But, yeah, the guy's just too good.”

The 19 year old said he did not feel overly nervous about the showdown with the five-time champion. After he broke in the opening game of the match he certainly appeared to have settled the quicker of the two.
A break-back when the Swiss was serving for the match at 5-3 in the fifth set provided momentary hope and whipped the New York City crowd into a frenzy, but the contest was over a game later when Tiafoe surrendered serve at the two-hour, 40-minute mark. The American was left with little doubt in his mind as to Federer’s standing in the game.
“He is the greatest, yeah,” Tiafoe said before he elaborated on what made the 36 year old so tough. “Go down the list. I mean, I can't read his serve. He jumps on the return ball better than anyone, doesn't give the baseline up. I mean, he takes time away, best mover by far. Yeah, he just sees the game completely different than everybody else … He's unbelievable.”
It was the type match the World No. 70 in the Emirates ATP Rankings had dreamt of playing. The result would only drive him to work harder. “It's the only reason I play the game,” he said of the match.
“Every day I thought I would be here. I always told my dad that. Finally, I had the opportunity to do it. It means the world to me. I'm happy that my brother, my mum, my dad, everyone got to see it.”

Dzięki dzikiej karcie zadebiutował na Wielkim Szlemie jako 17-latek. Dziś ma już na koncie siedem turniejów wielkoszlemowych, na których jednak maksymalnie docierał do drugiej rundy. Światową publikę podbił na tegorocznym US Open, gdzie mimo porażki znakomicie zaprezentował się w spotkaniu z Rogerem Federerem. Styl Tiafoe jest typowy dla amerykańskich graczy – mocny serwis, krótkie wymiany i dążenie do uderzeń kończących.

W tym roku dołożył dwa kolejne zwycięstwa na turniejach Challenger, dzięki czemu osiągnął najlepszy ranking w karierze (#60). Póki co Tiafoe jest jednak zbyt chimeryczny, żeby myśleć o sukcesach szczebel wyżej. Wygląda na to, że mobilizuje go gra o najwyższą stawkę, bo w tym roku, w imprezach ATP najlepsze wyniki osiągał w… Mastersach i turniejach wielkoszlemowych. W 2018 roku powinien przede wszystkim ustabilizować formę.

Who Will Make Milan In 2018? 18 #NextGenATP To Watch

Frances Tiafoe (Rank: 93; Age: 20): The American, like Tsitsipas, was a few wins away from playing in Milan last November. Tiafoe finished one spot away from qualifying in the ATP Race To Milan, which determined seven of the eight finalists. But expect Tiafoe, who nearly upset Roger Federer in the first round of the 2017 US Open, to continue making gains in the ATP Rankings in 2018.

#NextGenATP compatriot Frances Tiafoe celebrated his first tour-level win of the season, beating junior World No. 1 Sebastian Korda, the son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Petr Korda also won the Hamlet Cup in Long Island in 1992 for one of his 10 singles titles.

Tiafoe, a favourite to make the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, fell in the first round at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp and the Australian Open. Sebastian Korda, 17, was making his tour-level debut. The 6'4” right-hander won the Australian Open boys' singles title last month to rise to No. 1 in the junior rankings.

“He's playing great tennis. I congratulate him on winning the Australian Open. He's going to have a great career,” Tiafoe said.

Tiafoe will next face Israeli Dudi Sela, who beat eighth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-4, 6-4.

American posts first win in three attempts over Argentine

#NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe has landed a breakthrough victory over childhood idol and No. 2 seed Juan Martin del Potro to reach the Delray Beach Open quarter-finals on Thursday. The 20-year-old needed four match points to eke out a 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-5 win – his first in three FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings with the Argentine.

It sets up a showdown with reigning #NextGenATP Finals champion and No. 8 seed Hyeon Chung after the South Korean’s earlier defeat of qualifier Franko Skugor. It means Chung is the only seed to reach the quarter-finals, marking just the second time in the tournament's history that only one seed has reached the last eight (No. 8 seed Sanguinetti in 1998).

Del Potro, the 2011 champion and a semi-finalist for the past two years, had posted a straight-sets victory over Tiafoe in their most recent outing in the first round of this year’s Australian Open. It followed a narrow third-set tie-break triumph in Acapulco last season.

And after a return to the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings in January for the first time since August 2014, del Potro again started favourite in the match against the World No. 91. This was, after all, a tournament he won on debut in 2011 and reached the semi-finals the past two years.

This time, though, it was the American who capitalised on his opponent’s missed opportunities, with Del Potro letting an early 3-0 lead and four set points dissipate to concede the opening set in a tie-break, 8/6.

Spurred into action at the frustration of having let the first set slide from his grasp, del Potro broke immediately and carried the momentum to serve out the second set 6-4. With the match going to a deciding set, both players were rock-solid on serve with the only sniff of an early break for either coming when the Argentine saved a break point for 1-1.

Serving to stay in the match at 4-5, del Potro saved a first match point before saving two more at 5-6. On his fourth chance, Tiafoe secured just the second Top 10 win of his career to reach back-to-back quarter-finals (l. Anderson in New York) for the first time.

“It’s unbelievable definitely. Two weeks in a row in the quarters,” Tiafoe said. “I really wanted that win to make a statement. I’ve had a tonne of tough losses against top guys.

“Just wanted to get over the line. This is just my second or third win [over a Top 10 opponent]. I feel like this is going to be a good year for me. I feel like I’m playing well.”

The win sets a first-time showdown with last year’s #NextGenATP Finals champion and Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung. The 21-year-old South Korean held steady to defeat Croatian qualifier Franko Skugor in the second round 6-4, 7-6(4).

Chung’s win over the World No. 303 in the ATP Rankings puts him through to his third quarter-final of the season after losing to David Ferrer at the same stage in Auckland and following it up with a win over Tenny Sandgren to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open.

“We’re good friends. We’ve practised together a tonne, but we’ve never played a match,” Tiafoe said. “I’m really happy to play against him. He’s hot right now, coming off an unbelievable Australian Open. Tough conditions will even the playing field pretty good. If I can start well and hit my forehand good I’ll have a good chance.”

Two Wins In One Day: Tiafoe Breaks Through In Delray

Frances Tiafoe woke up on Saturday having never reached an ATP World Tour semi-final. Yet the #NextGenATP American will go to sleep tonight after advancing to his first final. How about that for a day?

After finishing off his victory against reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hyeon Chung on Saturday afternoon at the Delray Beach Open on his eighth match point, the 20-year-old beat 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-4 in 71 minutes in the evening to earn the right to play for his first ATP World Tour trophy on Sunday.

"It's been a great last couple of weeks," Tiafoe said. "I'm just trying to keep riding this wave and see where it takes me."


Tiafoe has been waiting for this moment, having contested 43 tour-level matches before this week (11-32) without reaching a semi-final. The right-hander just advanced to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final at last week's inaugural New York Open. And with the Shapovalov victory, Tiafoe became the second #NextGenATP American to reach a tour-level final, joining Taylor Fritz (Memphis 2016). He can become the youngest American to claim a title since a 19-year-old Andy Roddick at 2002 Houston.

"As a kid you always want to win your first title and now I have a chance to do it tomorrow," Tiafoe said. "Hopefully I can do it."

Shapovalov was also pursuing his first ATP World Tour final, and could have become the youngest player to win a tour-level title since Kei Nishikori 10 years ago this week, also in Delray Beach. Early on, the Canadian cruised on serve, losing just four points on his delivery through his first five service games. But Tiafoe earned his first two break points at 5-5, ripping a backhand return down the line for a winner before sprinting to his chair. He would have no issues serving out the set.

Tiafoe used that momentum to break two more times, grabbing a 3-0, double-break lead in the second set. And while Shapovalov clawed one break back, that was as close as he would get.

"I have to give Frances credit today. He played extremely well. He's been hot all week, beating unbelievable players," Shapovalov said. "He was the more dominant player for sure today. It's disappointing, but it's been a great week for me so going to take the positives from this week and keep going forward."

The American played patient, but aggressive tennis throughout the match, not forcing play, but taking advantage of the smallest of openings. He consistently attacked Shapovalov's one-handed backhand — especially with his serve — eliciting many errors off that side to help win 77 per cent of his service points. For an up-and-comer who had never been in a semi-final before Saturday, Tiafoe showed no nerves when serving for his first final, closing out the match at love.

The World No. 91 looked at his box, shaking his head up and down after clinching the match. He pointed his index finger at the court as if to say, “This is my time".

Tiafoe will play someone who has had plenty of success against Americans this week, as German Peter Gojowczyk disappointed the home crowd by defeating American Steve Johnson 7-6(3), 6-3 at earlier in the day to move into his second ATP World Tour final. The World No. 64 pursues his second title after winning the 2017 Moselle Open (d. Paire) as a qualifier. It was also his eighth consecutive tour-level win against Americans.


"I don't have something with Americans. I like you," said Gojowczyk — who is 12th in the Infosys ATP Under Pressure Leaderboard — with a laugh. "It's just a great week for me. I enjoy the time here in Delray... I love it."

The 28-year-old was No. 140 in the ATP Rankings last July. But with a win on Sunday against one of two #NextGenATP stars, Canadian Denis Shapovalov or Frances Tiafoe, Gojowczyk will move into the Top 50 for the first time in his career.

The semi-final was a far different match than his previous two for the right-hander, as he beat the 6’10” Isner and 6’11” Opelka in back-to-back matches. But the change in opposing style did not cause many problems — Gojowczyk saved the only break point he faced and won 77 per cent of service points to triumph. He has not been broken since the second set of his first-round victory against Slovakian Lukas Lacko.

"I thought he played exceptional tennis. A couple points I'd love to have change, but he came up with good stuff when he needed to come up with good stuff," Johnson said. "He served great. Had my looks, didn't take advantage of them today. That's tennis... nothing to hang my head about. I thought he played fantastic tennis."

It was still a strong week for the 28-year-old Johnson. Despite losing eight of nine tour-level matches before arriving in Delray Beach this week, the World No. 51 got back on track by advancing to his first ATP World Tour semi-final since winning the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship last April.

Gojowczyk has not played Tiafoe in a FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. However, he has split two career matches against the American — he beat the 20-year-old in 2016 Australian Open qualifying before losing their next encounter at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Winnetka, Illinois, later that year.

Sock/Withrow Pursue First Team Title
The World No. 8 in singles, Jack Sock, partnered childhood friend and the No. 97 in the ATP Doubles Rankings, Jackson Withrow, past third seeds Ben McLachlan and Hugo Nys 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 10/4 to advance to their first ATP World Tour final as a team. Sock has claimed eight tour-level doubles titles from 18 finals (8-10), while Withrow fell in his lone ATP World Tour final at the Ecuador Open earlier this month with Austin Krajicek.

The pair will play fourth seeds Nicholas Monroe and John-Patrick Smith, who outlasted Matthew Ebden and Donald Young 7-6(4), 2-6, 10/7. Monroe/Smith began competing together at the 2017 US Open and will play in their first final as a pair on Sunday.
