Spoiler:
The British wild card will play Bublik or Chardy next
Jack Draper produced a brilliant performance as he saved two set points on his way to upsetting third seed Jannik Sinner 7-6(6), 7-6(2), as he recorded his maiden ATP Tour main draw win in the first round of the cinch Championships in London.
The British wild card, who is currently No. 309 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, was contesting just his second ATP Tour event after he played at the Miami Open presented by Itau in March. The 19-year-old struck 11 aces and fought back from 0-4 down and from 4/6 in the first-set tie-break to claim victory in two hours.
On the defeat, Sinner said: “At the beginning it worked well, but after a bit, he understood my game. It was a little bit of a rollercoaster and he played the important points better than me. Today, I was not serving well and I think he deserved to win. He has more experience than me on the grass and I wish him good luck.”
Sinner, who is currently No. 23 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, reached the fourth round at Roland Garros last week (l. to Nadal) and became the second-youngest finalist in the Miami Open presented by Itau tournament's 36-year history (l. to Hurkacz), in March.
However, the #NextGenATP star could not convert this form onto the grass on Monday and is now 24-12 on the season. After Sinner made a fast start to lead 4-0, his British opponent gained one of the breaks back in a mammoth fifth game. This gave Draper momentum as he went onto win five of the next seven games to force a tie-break. From 4-6 down, he reeled off four straight points, claiming the opener when Sinner netted a forehand.
Draper then recovered after losing serve mid-way through the second set as he broke back at 4-5, winning 67 per cent (6/9) of points on Sinner’s second serve in the set. The youngster, who has a 7-9 career record on the ATP Challenger Tour, then cruised through the tie-break to progress. He will play either Alexander Bublik or Jeremy Chardy in the second round.
