Wspaniały ślub czeskich gwiazd tenisa

Czołowi czescy tenisiści 31-letni Radek Stepanek i młodsza o dziesięć lat Nicole Vaidisova pobrali się w sobotę w katedrze Świętego Wita w Pradze. Wśród gości ślubnych byli m.in. piłkarz Petr Cech i hokeista Jaromir Jagr.

Do katedry w Pradze panna młoda przyjechała białym Rolls-Royce'em, a pan młody czarną limuzyną BMW.

CATCHING UP WITH... RADEK STEPANEK

Obrazek
Stepanek's title in Washington propelled the Czech
back inside the Top 30.

Radek Stepanek may be 32 years old, but the Czech is still going strong on the ATP World Tour. A week ago in Washington D.C., Stepanek won his fourth singles title, defeating World No. 7 Gael Monfils in the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

The No. 1 seed in the Western & Southern Open qualifying draw, Stepanek booked his main draw slot on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Rik De Voest. ATPWorldTour.com caught up with the World No. 27 afterwards in Cincinnati.

A week ago, you won your first singles title in over a year and half at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Talk about the significance of that week and where you feel your game is at right now.

Coming to my first hard court tournament in Washington and winning against a strong field, beating a Top 10 player in the final definitely gave me a huge boost in confidence. So far my year wasn’t that good when looking at the Grand Slams and big tournaments and suddenly I was able to win a title in Washington. I proved that I’m not giving up even if things aren’t going well. I’m working hard because only hard work will pay off in the end.

Today, you defeated Rik De Voest to qualify into the main draw of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. How does a player adjust from winning an ATP World Tour 500 title to battling it out in the qualifying rounds?

Obviously I won the tournament in Washington which helped me get my points up where I wasn’t before. That would normally put me in the main draw here. But that’s how the tour works, that’s why we enter six weeks in advance. It’s good for me to keep my feet on the ground, not flying around too much. I am happy to play and qualify here. I am winning matches, which to players is the most important thing. Now that I’m through the qualifying, it can help me when the main draw starts.

With your win in Washington, you moved back inside the Top 30. Where do you hope to finish in the year-end rankings and what do you need to do to accomplish the goal?

I have to do what I do best – continue to work hard, playing with all my senses and keep doing what I’m doing now. We’ll see at the end of the year where it’s going to put me.

This is your seventh time playing in Cincinnati. What do you enjoy most about the area and/or tournament?

I’ve been staying many places here throughout the years. I love to stay downtown. It maybe has some extra driving but it’s great to have all the options in the city. There are good restaurants, movies, and plenty of places to enjoy the time off the court. We have a great golf course next to the courts, so we are all using that quite often. And the weather here is always nice…it’s a great tournament.

Should you win your first-round match, you’ll notch your 300th singles victory. How special is it for you to be hitting this milestone in the second half of your career?

It’s definitely been a long way there. Every match I won made me better, every match I lost made me better, so I’m happy I’m getting to this stage. Hopefully I will have another 100 more!

The Last Time You…

Had To Purchase Tennis Balls: In Prague, three weeks ago

Forgot To Set Your Alarm: I believe it’s never happened

Went On Vacation Without Playing Tennis: Last year in November, it was sort of a honeymoon in Seychelles

Ate Something Unhealthy: Haha, last night, I had ice cream at McDonalds

Stepanek odnosi swoje 300 zwycięstwo w karierze!

Radek pokonując w dniu wczorajszym Johna Isnera 7-5 5-7 7-6(4) w 1r. Mastersa w Cincinnati odniósł swoje 300 zwycięstwo w karierze na szczeblu ATP World Tour. Zajęło to Czechowi 15 lat, tym większe brawa należą się za upór! :)

Stepanek makes strong start

Obrazek

Seventh seed Radek Stepanek made a strong start to his Tokyo campaign, defeating India’s Somdev Devvarman 6-4, 6-3. The Czech player broke serve four times from eight opportunities to claim victory in one hour and 32 minutes.

I started pretty well,” said Stepanek. “The first set I played OK, but at the beginning of the second set I took a bit of a time-out in the first three games and was struggling a little bit. But then I found my way back and was controlling the match at the end. After the earthquake and what happened here it’s an honour to play in front of the crowd in Japan; I have a great respect for the people.

Former World No. 8 Stepanek improved to a 28-19 match record on the season, highlighted by winning his fifth ATP World Tour title at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington (d. Monfils). The 32 year old is making his sixth appearance at the ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tennis tournament in Tokyo after reaching the semi-finals last year (l. to Monfils).

Paes-Stepanek Beat Bryans For First Major Title

Obrazek

Playing in just their fourth tour-level event together, India’s Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic won their first major team title as they defeated five-time Australian Open champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 7-6(1), 6-2 in Saturday’s final in Melbourne.

Paes and Stepanek joined forces for the 2012 ATP World Tour season having only played together twice previously, and were beaten in the quarter-finals of the Apia International Sydney by the Bryans two weeks ago.

Victory sees the 38-year-old Paes complete the career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open crown for the first time. He had previously won six major trophies, triumphing at 1999 Roland Garros, 1999 Wimbledon and 2001 Roland Garros with Mahesh Bhupathi, the 2006 US Open (w/ Damm), and at Roland Garros and the US Open in 2009 with Lukas Dlouhy.

"It's many years of hard work," reflected Paes. "I have been in the game of tennis 25-plus years, and it's given me so much. I love playing my game of tennis at my age. I'm going to be 39 this year. The reason I can still win Grand Slams is, one, I know how to pick great partners; and, two, I'm very passionate about my daily schedule. Every day I put myself on the line, and that's a lot of fun."

The 33-year-old Stepanek captured his first Grand Slam doubles crown, having finished runner-up with countryman Jiri Novak at the 2002 US Open (l. to Bhupathi-Mirnyi).

"There is one thing which is making us very strong, which is the thing that we have great respect for each other as people. We are great friends. We never let [each other] down," said Stepanek.

"When we did our schedule, he told me, 'Partner, the only two things missing in my career is the Australian Open for the Grand Slam and winning the Masters.' I said, 'Partner, I will give you my heart, everything to reach these goals.' And it's happening right now, so it's amazing."

Paes and Stepanek came through the draw unseeded and became the first team in the Open Era to defeat the top three seeds at the Australian Open, having beaten No. 3 Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic in the third round before topping No. 2 Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor in the semi-finals.

A tight first set in the final saw neither team able to engineer a break of serve. In the ensuing tie-break, Paes and Stepanek stepped up and clinched the opener by a 7-1 margin. The Indian-Czech duo capitalised on their momentum at the start of the second set, breaking Bob Bryan’s serve for a 2-0 lead.

The Bryans had one chance to get back into the match in the seventh game after Bob Bryan wore down Stepanek at the net to earn break point. However, Paes produced a clutch backhand volley off his shoe laces to deny the American twins. After holding for a 5-2 lead, Paes and Stepanek then went up 15/40 on Mike Bryan’s serve, and converted their second match point after 84 minutes as the American double faulted.

"It was tight early," assessed Bob Bryan. "I thought we were playing okay. Then played a couple of little bit sloppy points in the breaker, and they capitalised and got some momentum. It kind of changed the tone of the match a little bit.

"But I've got to tip my hat to them. They played pretty well. They're going to be a tough team this year. They will be a top four team, and we will probably be playing them a lot more in big matches."

The 33-year-old Bryans were bidding to win their 12th major title and equal the all-time Grand Slam doubles teams titles record set by John Newcombe and Tony Roche in a partnership spanning both the amateur era and Open Era.

The twins were contesting the Australian Open final for the eighth time in nine years, and lifted the trophy in 2006 (d. Paes-Damm), 2007 (d. Bjorkman-Mirnyi), 2009 (d. Bhupathi-Knowles), 2010 (d. Nestor-Zimonjic) and 2011 (d. Bhupathi/Paes).

Radek Stepanek: The Biofile

Cytuj:
Obrazek

Radek Stepanek is lifted by doubles partner
Leander Paes after their Miami triumph.

Czech Radek Stepanek, who has teamed with Leander Paes to win the Australian Open and Sony Ericsson Open doubles titles this season, talks with Scoop Malinowski for this Biofile...

First Tennis Memory: "My father, tennis coach in Karvina."

Inspirations: "My tennis inspiration - I'm taking all my inspiration from somewhere else because I see a lot of great athletes playing well in a higher number of ages. And this is what is inspiring me to do the same in my sport."

First Famous Tennis Player You Met: "Hmm, good question...Thomas Muster. He was playing an exhibition against Slava Dosedel in Czech Republic, in a town where I lived for a few years. And I think I was 12 or 13, I just had to warm him up for the exhibition. And I was badly nervous [smiles]."

Greatest Sports Moment: "I think, singles-wise, my first title, definitely, in Rotterdam (2006). And winning doubles with Leander in Australian Open. Winning a Grand Slam [title] is always a memory which stays with me forever."

Most Painful Moment: "When I got in 2006 to Top 10 - I had a great year, I felt on top of my game - and I woke up in the morning and I didn't feel my right hand. I had a dislocated disk in the neck and couldn't play tennis for six months."

Favourite Tournaments: "Grand Slam - Australian Open. ATP World Tour Masters 1000 - Indian Wells. The others - Dubai, Basel."

Why Do You Love Playing Tennis: "Because I grew up playing tennis, I love the competition. I love the one-to-one; it's like in a boxing arena. The one-to-one, there is no draw. You win or lose. I like that gamble. That's the only gamble I do in my life - playing tennis. I don't do gambling in casinos and stuff. I have a passion for tennis. And it's the thing I know best in my life, so far."

Which Match Did You Feel Your Very Best: "I think that was the final of Rotterdam when I won my first title. There I played really good."

Strangest Match: "Definitely that happened in the Davis Cup, that's where all the strange things happen. As I remember it was 2007 in Prague when we played against Switzerland when they had on the team Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. And I played the final match against Wawrinka at 2-all and I was two sets to love up. And suddenly on one of my serves, my knee didn't hold up. I didn't know what happened and I had to finish that match really injured. And I don't know how, I don't know where it came from, but I was able to close out the match in the third set. And the atmosphere and everything that comes with it was just amazing feeling which I will never forget."

Three Athletes From Other Sports You Like To Watch: "Jaromir Jagr in hockey. Peter Cech in soccer, he's the goalkeeper for Chelsea. And Tiger Woods in golf."

Funniest Players Encountered: "I think Gael Monfils is very funny. I used to watch Yannick Noah in the times before, he was a little funny. Mostly the past generation, they were bringing to the game something special, something where the crowd laughed. They brought up some energy with the umpires. It was more of a show, which I like."

Current Car: "BMW."

Last Book Read: "Pavel Nedved, soccer player of Czech Republic."
