Frenchmen defeat Kubot/Melo in straight sets
After Mike Bryan and Jack Sock's win over Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic earlier in the day, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut knew they needed to post a win at the Nitto ATP Finals on Wednesday night to avoid elimination from the tournament.
"We are still in the competition. We wanted to show something better. The past few years were not that good [here] and the first match was not very good, so we really wanted to show that we are a good team and I think that is what we did today," said Mahut.
The French pairing managed exactly that, defeating Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 6-2, 6-4 to move to 1-1 in Group Knowles/Nestor. Herbert and Mahut won 62 per cent of second-serve return points and did not face a break point en route to their 70-minute victory, improving to 21-10 at tour-level this season.
"It is the best match we have played together here," said Herbert. "It is a good feeling right now because the matches were not like this every time."

Making their fourth straight appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, Herbert and Mahut are bidding to reach the semi-finals at The O2 for the first time. The eighth seeds will face Mike Bryan and Jack Sock in their final round-robin match on Friday.
"In the past six months, [Bryan and Sock] have been the best team," said Mahut. "We know what we have to do. [We have to] play the same match as today."
Herbert and Mahut got off to the best possible start at The O2, with sharp returning in the opening game. The Frenchmen forced errors on consecutive points directly from their returns, before converting break point after a double fault from Melo. A second break soon followed as Kubot failed to control Herbert's return on deciding point, before the Roland Garros champions served out the set to love after 29 minutes.
In a repeat of the opening set, Herbert continued to apply pressure on return and was rewarded for his efforts. After earning break point with a powerful forehand return, the prospect of once again serving to the 27-year-old extracted another poorly timed double fault, this time from Kubot, to hand the Frenchmen an early second-set advantage. Mahut and Herbert maintained that lead throughout the set, serving the match out to love.
"We served well. We were aggressive and we won the key points," said Herbert.
Kubot and Melo, who drop to 0-2 in Group Knowles/Nestor, can still qualify for the semi-finals when they face top seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic on Friday. Last year's finalists have lifted four tour-level trophies in 2018, including back-to-back titles in Beijing and Shanghai.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut won Group Knowles/Nestor with a 2-1 record at the Nitto ATP Finals by beating Mike Bryan and Jack Sock 6-2, 6-2 in 53 minutes on Friday.
The Frenchmen, who have qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in four appearances at The O2 in London, will next prepare to meet Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah on Saturday. Bryan and Sock, who finish second in group play, will now face Group Llodra/Santoro winners Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the other semi-final.
Herbert and Mahut avenged their loss to Bryan and Sock at the recent Rolex Paris Masters by blitzing through the fifth-seeded Americans with two breaks of serve in each set – the fourth and eighth games. The eighth-seeded Frenchmen won 25 of their 28 first-service points for their 22nd match win of the year.
Bryan and Sock, winners of the Wimbledon and US Open titles in 2018, finish with a 2-1 record in group play but must now regroup to face Murray and Soares on Saturday and improve their 18-6 tally.

Herbert matched his best Grand Slam performance with his 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win against South Korea's Hyeon Chung, who beat Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic last year en route to the semi-finals. The Frenchman reached the third round at the 2016 Australian Open, 2016 Wimbledon and 2018 Roland Garros.
When asked about facing Herbert, Raonic said, “He's played well. Two very good wins over Sam and over Chung. I think we're going to try to play a similar way. I think he does things at the net well. He tries to play aggressive. He tries to take swipes at the ball. I think we're both going to be looking for the opportunity to dictate and who can control more.”

Frenchmen Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut reached their second Australian Open semi-final on Wednesday, ending Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan's quest for a 17th Grand Slam title as a team.
Herbert/Mahut fell down a break in the second set, and the Bryans served to level the quarter-final. But Herbert/Mahut broke back in the ninth game and pulled away in the tie-break to advance 6-4, 7-6(3).
The Bryans were playing their first Slam together since last year's Australian Open, since Bob missed the final six and half months of the 2018 season because of a right hip injury that required surgery.

Herbert/Mahut made the 2015 final but lost to Italians Simone Bolelli/Fabio Fognini. The Frenchmen will next meet Americans Ryan Harrison/Sam Querrey, who upset seventh seeds Lukasz Kubot/Horacio Zeballos 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
On the top half of the draw, 2017 Australian Open champions Henri Kontinen/John Peers won 88 per cent of their first-serve points (29/33) and knocked out third seeds Jamie Murray/Bruno Soares 6-3, 6-4.
The 12th seeds will play Leonardo Mayer/Joao Sousa for a chance to return to the final. Mayer/Sousa beat sixth seeds Raven Klaasen/Michael Venus on Tuesday.
Peers/Kontinen Face Herbert/Mahut In Australian Open Doubles Final
Spoiler:
John Peers and Henri Kontinen will look to capture their second Australian Open doubles crown on Saturday when they face Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the final. Herbert and Mahut will be attempting to become the eighth team in the sport’s history to complete the career Grand Slam of doubles titles.
Kontinen and Peers, the No. 12 seeds and 2017 champions, knocked out Leonardo Mayer and Joao Sousa 6-1, 7-6(8) in 87 minutes. They will now look to improve upon their 13-1 record in tour-level finals, two years on from beating Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the final at Melbourne Park.
“It was great to get through that one today,” said Peers. “Everything went our way in the first set. I didn't quite get through my service game to hold it for the match, but we battled through and played a good tie-break.”
The Finnish-Australian team broke at 3-3 in the second set, but were unable to convert one match point at 5-3, with Mayer serving at 30/40, prior to their opponents breaking the Peers serve in the next game. Kontinen and Peers got off to a 4/1 lead in the tie-break, but then lost four straight points. They finally sealed victory on their third match point.
Later in the day, fifth-seeded Frenchmen and 2015 finalists Herbert and Mahut cruised past Americans Ryan Harrison and Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-2 in 70 minutes. After a nervous start, featuring three straight service breaks, Herbert and Mahut dominated and broke the serves of Harrison and Querrey in the fifth and seventh games of the second set.
The Frenchmen will be bidding to become the eighth men’s team in history to complete the set of four major championship doubles titles on Saturday, having won the 2015 US Open (Murray/Soares), 2016 Wimbledon (d. Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin) and last year’s Roland Garros (d. Marach/Pavic).
Herbert and Mahut, who are 13-6 lifetime in tour-level finals, are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Frank Sedgman and Ken McGregor, Ken Rosewall and Lew Hoad, Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson, John Newcombe and Tony Roche, Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis, Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, and also the Bryan brothers.
Mahut/Herbert Complete Career Grand Slam With Australian Open Title
Spoiler:
Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert became the eighth men's doubles team in the sport’s history to complete the Career Grand Slam of all four major championship crowns on Sunday afternoon by clinching their first Australian Open trophy.
The fifth-seeded Frenchmen defeated No. 12 seeds and 2017 champions Kontinen and Peers 6-4, 7-6(1) in one hour and 38 minutes to add to their 2015 US Open, 2016 Wimbledon and 2018 Roland Garros titles. The tandem hit 14 winners to 25 for Kontinen and Peers, but their greater consistency on serve proved to be the difference on Rod Laver Arena.
“We knew when we won Roland Garros that it was the one missing, so for sure it added maybe a special motivation when entering this tournament,” said Herbert. “I think we wanted it, but we also wanted to be good on court in each match and we focused on the game, and that's why maybe today we could achieve what we achieved here at the Australian Open.”
“Today, I didn't have it in mind, because I thought I was sure it would have been really difficult to play if I was just focused on just to win this tournament, because it was the one missing," said Mahut. "I was just focused on the game, just focused on what I have to do on court to be good, because in front of us we had a really good team to beat.”
Herbert and Mahut became the first team to complete the Career Grand Slam since Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan secured their set of major titles at Wimbledon in July 2006. The 2019 champions are also the second all-French pair in the Open Era (since April 1968) to lift the Australian Open trophy, following in the footsteps of Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro.

Kontinen and Peers both saved three break points in their first service games, but the pressure mounted and successive groundstroke winners helped Herbert and Mahut break Kontinen’s serve for a 5-4 advantage.
Herbert saved four break points at 1-2 in the second set, before Peers saved two break points — courtesy of two backhand errors — in a 16-point game. Three successive errors from Kontinen and Peers at the start of the tie-break, gave Herbert and Mahut the upper hand en route to an historic victory. The two teams are now tied 2-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.
Rod Laver and Roy Emerson, the only two players in the sport’s history to capture all four major singles championships twice, presented the trophies on the main stadium at Melbourne Park. Afterwards, Novak Djokovic, who is attempting to make history today against Rafael Nadal by lifting a record seventh Australian Open singles crown, came out onto court to congratulate Herbert and Mahut.
Herbert and Mahut are now 13-6 in tour-level finals, including six ATP Masters 1000 crowns.
“When I had to choose a partner when [Michael] Llodra retired, then I had no doubt that I had to play with Pierre-Hugues," said Mahut. "Because I was sure we'd have so much success. Then after five years, we learned about each other. We spent so much time on court, out of the court. As I said on court, I love him like my brother.”
