Q. The rain came at a good time for you last night, do you think?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, it came probably at a time we both needed. Start of the fifth set was it was going to be tough for me because I was a little bit tired in the fourth set, but I was happy to get that momentum to stop, I think.
It was just a pain. The last 24 hours was just very tough because you have to go to sleep, you have one set to go, and then to come out playing well. It's just one break of serve. It happened to be that one break of serve. So I'm very happy that I won in the end.

Q. How do you control the nerves when you get so close to the victory and you have to wait for four hours?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, it was tough. I mean, I knew it was going to be a break in it. Then when I managed to get it and held and after that big game at 4 3 it was very, very emotional because I should have lost that game. Then to win that gave me a big breathing space, and then obviously the officials said to come off the court. But for me I was happy. For me this game was the key game at 4 3. I knew after I just needed to serve it out. I did that.
Q. Tennis etiquette requires that both players arrive on court at the same time. You were kept waiting about eight minutes. Any idea why?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, well, I think because he was up in the locker getting something taped on as when I left and I thought he was leaving, so I just happened to walk out. Yeah, I did get to the court prior to him very early, and unfortunately I had to stand on court like a retard.
Q. It could have been over before it rained, really, couldn't it?
BERNARD TOMIC: When you think about it, you're right. It was surprising to see today because when I saw the score at 5 3 I saw the scores at 1 All and people have just chosen to serve or receive. I was just fascinated how we went through so many games to 5 3.
Q. How much of a relief is it to win tonight and not have to sleep on a 4 3 lead?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, it was actually I was thinking about it before and I said to myself, you know, maybe if I come back tomorrow maybe they won't put me to play that second round match tomorrow. Maybe I just play I don't know how the scheduling can work and what they can do with the rules. I was leaning on hopefully playing tomorrow and then not having to play second if I had have won.
Now I have to play tomorrow. But I don't really know what happened. And we did go from the courts at fifth set, and having to go in that night and sleep and all this drama, it's something I'm not used to. Probably only happened a few times in my career. Twice I think I won. This is one of the recent times it happens. You need to know how to handle it and try to do the best as I could.
Q. What do you know about your next opponent?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I know he went through quallies. I did manage to hit some balls with him over the clay court period. He's a cool guy. I know his coach well.
So, yeah, he's competing well playing. He won today. I think he's a really tough competitor. I have to respect and try and focus on my game to win.
Q. Where's your game do you feel at the moment?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I'm pretty happy, I said before, probably with my results, some of the best grass court results prior to Wimbledon. I think it's pretty solid.
Obviously once the draw came out to play Fernando, he's very tough because you're playing a top player and a very respected player on tour. He was going to be a very tough first round, everyone knew. Whoever won this match, you know, had a big chance of going further into the draw, for sure.
Q. What do you need to improve for the next round?
BERNARD TOMIC: I have to improve my focus and serve well. I think I served so good throughout the sets I won against Verdasco but I served so bad the sets I lost against Verdasco.
So I think I just need to work on consistency, and serving is the key to my game on grass, for sure.
Q. Is the back feeling okay?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, it is. It's feeling pretty good. Obviously a lot of stopping/starting. Especially in Queen's I played. It was very similar to this. It was a very draining two weeks, but I'm very confident in the results lately.

Q. Good win today. Bit of backlash for the slip of the tongue yesterday. Was that any sort of distraction?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, look, I apologize if I offended anyone. I'm sorry. It just came out the wrong way.
Looking at my match today was tough. I won. It was amazing battle and a good match to be a part of.
Q. How much did that take out of you?
BERNARD TOMIC: A lot, a lot, a lot. Physically. I wasn't expecting the guy to play as good as he played.
I think he really loved my ball. He was so used to my ball, and he was ready for everything. It was tough for me, because there are not many players on tour that like my tennis and my game. For him, it felt okay and he was dealing with it fine.
I had to change up stuff, had to do stuff differently. He was playing quality tennis out there. Full credit to him for having amazing qually run and winning a match here.
Q. I guess at 4 2 up in the third, you might have thought you could close out. Just a bit of a dip?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I lost concentration and my energy fell. Sometimes I struggle with that, those sort of things.
I managed to turn it around. I was down a break in the fourth, and I just kept fighting. I knew it was one break and I knew he doesn't serve that great. I managed to win that break.
After that, I felt confident. One tie game at 3 All in the fourth. After I sort of got out of that game, I think I saved a lot of break points. I became more confident in myself, and I realized what I needed to do to break from the 4 3 game.
Q. Another tough customer coming up next. Step it up a bit further?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, well, I mean, he's very similar to the guy I played today. I mean, this guy played high quality match. There's no reason why this guy cannot play as good as Bautista Agut. The quality that was in the tennis today, they're very similar players.
I have to expect from Bautista Agut a fight similar to today. He's gonna run for every ball. This is why he's almost a top 10 player. I think he's at his best ranking now, the last six months, playing amazing. He's just a fighter. It's good to get this sort of match in leading into a match against Bautista Agut.
Q. Where do you think you'll have the edge?
BERNARD TOMIC: I think being confident and, you know, nothing to lose now. And it's a good third round. It's very tough for both of us, but you're not playing a Djokovic, not playing a Federer. So I have to look at this match and go for it. Because if I do that, I should come out on top.
But it's going to be very, very tough. I have to take one point at a time. It's going to be a very big grind out there for sure.
Q. Are you confident of recovering physically in time?
BERNARD TOMIC: I'm happy I get Friday off. That's a bonus to me. I am a little bit tired now. Played amazing match against Fernando, and it's really taking it out of me now.
One day off tomorrow is what I need. If I had to play tomorrow, then I'd be in a little bit of trouble.
But then looking at his sort of match, he got the withdraw and he played a pretty easy first round against Jordan Thompson. He hasn't played that much tennis and I have played a lot of tennis. It will be interesting.
Q. Can that help that he hasn't had a lot of grass court tennis this week?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, absolutely. He hasn't played for three, four days. He has to play me in the third round. I know I can win this match. It's tough for him.
I will have a lot of support. I will go for my shots, go for my game. And, you know, you're playing one of the biggest tournaments in the world. I have always played well in the past. I'm going to come out in this match trying to win from the start.

Q. When is the last time you hit that ball so cleanly for so long?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I felt pretty good. I think I had to play that way. Otherwise I would have played a long match, and it's something I didn't want to do, so I needed to play like this. That was, from the start, in my mindset.
It's a shame Lleyton couldn't watch. He was on the court playing. I think he won. Did he win? Yeah, they won. That's good. He would have loved to be there to watch, because I was on fire. Maybe it's a good thing he wasn't there.
He also won in the doubles, so congratulate him. It was a good day today.

Q. What were you most pleased with?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I knew I couldn't match with him off the ground. I couldn't compete because I've been a little bit tired. I played a lot of matches. So I knew my game had to be attack from the start, focus on my serve.
Those first few games before the rain he was playing a joke. I thought, Oh, this is going to be a tough match.
After the rain came, I started well. I won five games in a row straight to win the set 6 2. From then I was really confident. Everything started going off my racquet in.
Once those days come, you just gotta keep swinging and go for it. I beat a quality player today in straight sets.
Q. The court is very handy for Southfields Tube Station, but in terms of two top 20 players, one, did you find amazing to find two quality players out there. Did it, in fact, help you, because the crowd was basically touching you, wasn't it?
BERNARD TOMIC: Exactly. Yeah, it is a bit of a it's a bit of a, how can you say? Well, I was playing PlayStation actually. I bought a PlayStation the other day. I was playing PlayStation when I realized I was playing on Court 17. I didn't know where Court 17 was. I knew where Court 18 was. I had to really think where I was playing.
I couldn't believe I was going from going on to Court 2 to play on Court 17 where he's 13 in the world, I'm 18, 19. So two top 20 players that are playing.
Yeah, I saw this morning, the schedule was horrendous with the players and the doubles. It was just chaos for the Wimbledon organization. It's something they have to take into consideration today because it was a tough, tough, tough five days. And that's one of the reasons we were playing on Court 17.
Q. Can you look ahead to Monday and what might happen there?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I saw Del Potro is winning. If he wins, then it's probably a player I don't want to play. I have lost to him twice. He's a Grand Slam champion and one of the most respected players on tour that's now fighting to come back in the men's game at the top level.
I have never played him on grass, which is something I look forward to. There is a big chance for me to win this match, for sure.
Q. A lot of people are willing him on because of the misfortune he's had. Do you sympathize with him or if he wasn't playing you, do you think you'd want him to win?
BERNARD TOMIC: I like Juan. He's great guy, amazing player. Good for him if he's playing well. If he wins today, congrats to him. But then, you know, it stops my like towards him. I have to try and beat him.
This would be a very tough match for me to win. But it's a match I can win on grass. It's going to be some great tennis, for sure, in that moment.
Q. What about Pouille if you play him?
BERNARD TOMIC: I don't know too much about him, and I'm sure if he wins, then I have to assess and sit down with Lleyton and the team and discuss what the best situation is to play him.
But right now, I think it's looking more like it's Del Potro.
Q. Compare your form to 2011.
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I think today just showed how good I can actually play on grass, and looking back to, you know, when I was 18 playing so freely and beating Soderling in straight sets. Today I think I played that level, playing a guy 14 in the world.
He's an amazing player, and for me to beat him that comfortably, you know, just showed how good I'm playing.
Now I have nothing to lose. I'm in the fourth round, chance for a quarterfinal at the biggest tournament in the world. I have to go out there playing good and believing.
Q. What do you have to do for qualify for one of your towels besides holding a pint of lager and...
BERNARD TOMIC: That guy? It's a Saturday crowd. It's a bit different crowd. As opposed to the week, you get more of these people that know how to cheer and respect the way they cheer. As opposed to Saturdays, where a lot of people coming and it's just cheering on double faults and everything. It's an interesting thing to be a part of, especially on those outside courts.
But obviously today's cheering was every point for no reason sometimes. I felt sorry for his end, as well. Sometimes they do it at the wrong time.
Q. Assess Del Potro and his injuries in this tournament, how different he is since the wrist surgeries, his backhand in particular?
BERNARD TOMIC: Absolutely. I think before he was hitting his backhand a lot better, and it's like this because he was away for so long. I think it still is there and bothers his left hand, I think, and his backhand.
So he's struggling. He's getting into it, and he's playing some good tennis on grass. Don't get me wrong. But I really wish his wrist is going to get better.
But playing him in the fourth round, I want to win this match, but I really like Juan as a guy.
Q. I'm not sure if you have seen the Novak results. Have you heard that he's out?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah. We saw. Sam played amazing yesterday and served amazing. Novak didn't play his best tennis. I think when you've won so much, sometimes it's tough to focus, and everyone wants to beat you every day.
I think Sam played the match of his life, and he won. That's what it takes to beat the best player.
Q. When Novak is out of the tournament, are you able to not think about the opportunity everybody else has?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, it's true. I know I'm on the opposite side of the draw, so I've got no worry to think about that.
But whoever is in that section is going to look for making the best as they can, and good luck to whoever is in that section.

Five years ago, Australian tennis looked to have found its successor to former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt when 18-year-old Bernard Tomic burst onto the scene as a qualifier at Wimbledon, making a run to the quarter-finals.
Three years earlier, Tomic had become the youngest-ever Australian Open boys’ champion aged 15. He then looked to be taking the first step towards realising his potential in 2011 as he ousted World No. 5 Robin Soderling at SW19 before his run ended in four sets against Novak Djokovic.
However, it’s been a rocky road both on and off the court since then for Queensland’s Tomic. He would go on to break the Top 30 of the Emirates ATP Rankings in the summer of 2012, but admitted that a lack of professionalism, coupled by injury woes in 2014, derailed his progress on the ATP World Tour.
Speaking to ATPWorldTour.com, Tomic admitted that success may have come too early in his career. “Having success at a young age is a great thing. It's a hype, a big feeling, but sometimes it can put you down,” he said.
“I think I got a little bit lazy and stayed around the 30-50 mark in the rankings for that year when I was 19, 20. I managed to reach a career-high of 27 at the age of 19, but I felt like I was not giving my best and not performing at my 100 per cent level. That's something that I realised only the past few years or so.”
Off-court transgressions together with frustrations on the court led people to make quick judgments about Tomic and his demeanor. But sit down with the 23-year-old Tomic and you engage with a polite, well-mannered, mature, committed and thoughtful individual.
"I've had a few hiccups on the way, but I'm that sort of a personality,” he said. “Everyone's different. I enjoy being out playing matches, competing and training. It's an amazing sport. I've definitely learned a lot from the age of 18 and that's made me improve so much in the past two years.
"You should always remember to not judge a book by its cover. Sometimes people meet me in Australia and say, 'Hey, you're not that person that everyone thinks you are.' I think maybe the media turned it around and I think with having so much hype and aggression at a young age, they really expected a lot of big things from me. They forgot that we're in the toughest era of tennis and you have to earn your spot in the Top 10 in the world. That's something that I'm trying to achieve.”
Enter Hewitt. The two-time Grand Slam champion is credited by Tomic as being the driving force behind getting his career back on track in the past 18 months. Hewitt, who retired from professional tennis at the start of 2016, has taken on the role of Australia’s Davis Cup captain as well as mentor and coach to Tomic.
Hewitt was famed for his competitiveness and left no stone unturned during his illustrious career. Under the Aussie stalwart’s guidance, Tomic has found the drive, desire and work ethic he hopes will take him to the top of the Emirates ATP Rankings.
“I've learned a lot [from Hewitt] and the biggest thing is how he got to World No. 1 and how hard he worked; the commitments and the sacrifices he had to make. That's something that I need to do,” said Tomic. “At this level of tennis now, it's so tough out there and there are so many good guys in the Top 10, you need to really compete and work hard.
"All the time he's encouraging me to do more and more and to make sure I've done the work. He's just so positive, Lleyton himself. I feel like at the end of the year I can do a good pre-season with him and have a good training block before the Australian summer.”
The renewed focus has seen Tomic spend the past 11 months hovering in and around the Top 20 and now with three ATP World Tour titles on his resume. This week he competes at the Western & Southern Open, looking to make another deep run at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 after quarter-finals in Indian Wells and Shanghai last year. From there, Tomic is eyeing the Top 10 and a strong run at the US Open.
"The past two years have been pretty up for me. I can take a lot of positive things from it. I'm 23 now and hopefully have a great future the next six to seven years. I'm improving all the time. I need this next few years to be more professional really and target being a consistent Top 10 player,” said Tomic.
"It's very, very tough [going from Top 20 to Top 10]. I managed to get from 80 in the world last year to 17 - my career-high. The next positive for me is really doing well at a Slam, maybe at the US Open, having a good run there and using my seeding in the draw to really open up a good tournament for me.
"I'd love to win a Grand Slam or two. I know I have it in me and I know I have to focus these next few years. I had a big chance this year at Wimbledon to maybe make another quarter-final to play Berdych. I've played many, many times the third and fourth rounds of Grand Slams and been very consistent up to that stage. But to play in the semi-final of Grand Slams and push for a final is something that I need to break and I need to achieve.
"I have to stay healthy and I have to get that block of being a Top 15 seed in the tournament. But until then you really have to work on the other tournaments - win those, make a lot of points - because we know this tour is not just one or two weeks. We have to perform throughout the whole year if you want to have any success or chance at doing well in the majors.”

Q. Pretty frustrating day for you out there.
BERNARD TOMIC: No, it wasn't that frustrating. I think he just played a good match. I think everyone sort of looked far ahead and prospected me and Nick in the third round. I think everyone wanted to see that. The media was too focused on that.
I think I didn't give everyone what they wanted. So full credit to the player I played today. It's a match I lost. But it's been a good U.S. season for me the last four or five weeks. I played some good tennis. But unfortunately today I was a little bit tired and I played a quality player.
Q. Did the media expectations distract you today, make you lose focus?
BERNARD TOMIC: No. I was a little bit tired. I played a lot of tennis, especially last few weeks. I played quality tennis. Today was tough for me. I knew I had to play a lot of balls against him. He's beaten a few players in the top 10, Berdych, et cetera. I knew it was going to be tough because I played him here last year in the first round.
For me to play this match tonight, I knew I had to use my feet, my legs, and be on every ball. I just couldn't find the energy. I just needed to find something. Even my serve was off.
But he was playing very, very good. I spoke to him in the locker after. He said he played a very, very good match.
Q. What was the situation with the heckler in the crowd?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I think he was just baiting me a bit. You know, I don't want to get into it. I apologized for what I said to him. I think after he left the first set, I think the crowd got happy he left because he was a bit annoying. But it's okay.
Q. He was actually kicked out?
BERNARD TOMIC: I have no idea. I just saw he left and the crowd clapped a bit. But I have no idea who he is. I apologized for what I said to him. I just continued to play after the second, third set and fourth.
Q. What was the exchange you had with the chair umpire?
BERNARD TOMIC: The chair umpire? When was that?
Q. Did he talk to you about what you said?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, no, he just asked me who was that, what was this. I just said some guy. I don't know who it was. The whole time I didn't know who it was. I'm focusing on the court. That's my priority.
There was some stuff in the background as I was playing balls and returning. It's tough. I watched a little bit today of Tipsarevic also and Querrey. There were some similar situations with the crowd yelling and people talking in between points. Big points, I should say. It was maybe not good that the crowd got too excited or sometimes speaking in the points, it's not fair. I think we're here to all play and everything has to be equal.
Nothing was really said with me and the umpire. He just asked me what was the problem.
Q. Is what he was saying to you similar to what you said back to him?
BERNARD TOMIC: I don't know. I just turned around. It was the same sort of voice. He was just sort of saying negative stuff. I didn't know who it was because I was just focusing on the court. It was tough to figure out in the background.
It's passed and I don't really care who this guy is.
Q. What sort of things were said?
BERNARD TOMIC: I can't remember at the moment. I don't want to talk about it anymore because I do not remember what he was saying to me. It was just in that moment. But it's okay.
Q. What you said was picked up on camera, is on YouTube already. What do you think of that?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I think obviously -- you know, I apologized to what I said to him. He definitely baited me the whole set for me to say that. But I do apologize. If there were people around that heard, yeah, that's all I can say.
Q. You had a discussion with Dzumhur at the handshake. Anything related to that?
BERNARD TOMIC: No, Dzumhur is a good friend of mine. I respect him a lot. I just wished him the best and encouraged him to continue his great form this week. Hopefully he can do well for himself here.
Q. (Question regarding Davis Cup.)
BERNARD TOMIC: I haven't thought about anything yet. I'm just tired lately, last month, two. Especially after Wimbledon. I went to Washington straightaway. Was playing pretty okay. Then Toronto. Was flying a lot.
It's tough. Tennis, you have to be really fit and stuff. I'm one of those guys if I'm 100% and fit and ready for the tournament, I play very good tennis.
But now I think definitely I'll go back to Davis Cup we have. It's a little bit further away we have, maybe two weeks. Maybe I'll relax now a little bit.
Q. Do you feel the Old Grandstand that you hear a lot more from the crowd than you would other courts?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, for sure. It's, what do you call it, everything is near and compact. Yeah, surprised there was no challenge. I obviously played on that court where I beat Lleyton and lost to Gasquet in the third round. There was a challenge. This year there was no challenge. I was fascinated. But obviously they moved the New Grandstand to the new position and it's a great court, for sure. I've seen it.
Q. Are you saying you will play Davis Cup?
BERNARD TOMIC: Of course. It's a stupid question. I always play Davis Cup. I'm there 100%.
Q. You seem to expect the questions about what got picked up on microphones. How did you hear about that after the match?
BERNARD TOMIC: What do you mean?
Q. How did you hear this was out and online and everyone heard what you said?
BERNARD TOMIC: I just heard from you. You just told me then, or whoever said. I couldn't care less. I apologized right now if anyone heard around, but I directed it specifically to him.
Q. (Indiscernible.)
BERNARD TOMIC: I couldn't care less where he went. I think the crowd clapped that he went, so...
Q. Have you been told that you might get a fine for it or not?
BERNARD TOMIC: No. I mean, he was for sure in the moment saying a lot of stuff to me. But it's okay. It's just sometimes the crowd need to be respectful, especially at a big major tournament, the US Open, for example. Like I said before, I saw it in the Tipsarevic match, too. The crowd get too into it, too against an opponent, too on one person's side. It creates energy. The crowd really get into the match. It sometimes can cause problems.
I had problems on the other end, as well, with a few people in the corner. But it's just they were saying some negative stuff to me, in my language of Serbian-Croatian. The microphones didn't pick that up. But I obviously caught the blame for that.
Q. Was it something about playing a Bosnian that made this match more heated?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah. My mother is Bosnian. Obviously I understand the language. Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, it's all the same.
I had a bit of problem with the other side of the end with a few people. But that's okay. They apologized as well to me and they started supporting for me in the fourth set. I was happy to see that as well.
Q. It's tough for athletes traveling the world. You're out there all by yourself in hostile settings. Do you think athletes nonetheless have a responsibility to have basic decency and respect or anything goes?
BERNARD TOMIC: I think, you know, we're in a sport where it's so respected. Golf, tennis, I think we respect one another and the crowd. If you see golf tournaments, as well, on the side, no one's yelling, no one's talking. There's a lot of quiet there before someone is hitting the swing or stroke.
So is tennis. It's a very respectful sport. We're not boxers or MMA fighters that we rip into each other's throats before the fight. It's a very respected sport. I think it should be that way.
Q. Do you feel you crossed the line with what you said?
BERNARD TOMIC: I'd like to see what the microphone picked up what he said. But that might not be possible.

WHAT was that, Bernard?

The 23-year-old tennis star had a veiled swipe at Stan Wawrinka in a pre-match interview with Seven News.

The Davis Cup representative said he was “surprised” at Wawrinka winning a grand slam. The Swiss beat Novak Djokovic on Monday in the US Open final at Flushing Meadows, marking his third slam crown.

“It just surprises me because I’ve beaten him a few times (and) Nick’s beaten him a few times,” Tomic said.

“I’ve beaten a few grand slam champions in my life.”

Unfortunately for Tomic, his self-proclaimed track record against the greats doesn’t stand up too well.

His only recorded win against Wawrinka came in 2011 in their clash at the Davis Cup play-offs.

He has also lost all six clashes with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, all three meetings with Rafael Nadal and all four appearances against Andy Murray and Roger Federer.

Top two seeds upset in semi-final action
Jack Sock and Bernard Tomic have found a winning combination this week in Beijing, reaching the final of the China Open with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over second seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo on Saturday.
Sock, the 2014 Wimbledon doubles champion, will challenge for his seventh tour-level doubles title, while Tomic will look to win his first in his first final. Sock is the defending champion in Beijing, having lifted the trophy 12 months ago with Vasek Pospisil.
The American/Australian duo will challenge Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and Rafael Nadal, who upset top seeds and three-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 7-5, 6-4 in 78 minutes.
Carreno Busta is through to his third doubles final in three events, after runner-up finishes at the US Open (w/ Garcia-Lopez) and last week in Chengdu (w/ Fyrstenberg). The 25 year old won his first doubles crown at the start of the season in Quito with Guillermo Duran.
Nadal, meanwhile, is looking for his 11th doubles title and second of the season, having won the gold medal at the Rio Olympics with Marc Lopez.

TOMIC TARGETING TOP 10 IN 2017

He is still on the lookout for a full-time coach.

But Bernard Tomic believes he is primed to launch a bold quest to crack the ATP Tour top 10.

Tomic said he hoped to eventually find a full-time mentor next year despite enjoying a career-high world ranking of No.17 in January, while flying solo.

He said finding a new coach would be a key step toward his 2017 goal of finally joining the top 10.

“Hopefully in 2017 I can have someone there, a mentor – that is going to be important,” said world No.26 Tomic.

“I would like to reach the top 10 mark.”

And Tomic believes the home-court advantage this summer will provide an ideal launching pad for his plan.

Tomic will start his preparation for the Australian Open at the Brisbane International, which begins on 1 January.

“I think Australia will push me forward so I have to be ready and step up here,” Tomic said.

“Brisbane is a huge start for me. And I feel it could be a huge year for me.”

While 2016 featured plenty of bright spots on court – a final in Acapulco, semis at Brisbane and Queen’s, a career-high ranking, more than $1 million in prize money and trips to the second week at Melbourne Park and Wimbledon – haunted him was blowing a big chance at the All England Club.

His five-set, fourth round loss to Frenchman Louis Pouille, from two-sets-to-one up a major pain point.

“I could have pushed for a quarter, maybe a semi,” Tomic lamented.

Another was his see-sawing Acapulco final loss to rising star Dominic Thiem in February.

A win would have catapulted him to world No.13 and closer to the the top 10.

“I missed a few chances but I know what I need to do to progress in 2017,” Tomic said. “No one can help myself more than I can – that’s up to me. Mentality is the key. It’s why the top five, top 10 are so good – it’s something I lack.”

Tomic remains confident that despite pressure to do well at home, Australia is the best place for him to launch his season with a big Australian Open performance.

“It’s not easy. You have to try and put that aside and not get distracted,” he said.

“It always gets to you that pressure. You just have to control it.

“But Australia is my favourite place to play.”

Q. How would you sum up your preparations?
BERNARD TOMIC: Pretty good. I was practicing very well. And, yeah, I got a bunch of exhibitions in, so it was important for me get matches regardless of win/loss.

I'm feeling pretty confident. I play a tough player first round here, so it's going to be a tough match. He's not easy to play for me, so I have to get ready for this match with all my effort.

Q. You expect he'll make you work pretty hard? Is that the way he goes about it?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, he's very intense. He's beaten a lot of top players. I think he's reached almost top 20 in the world, won multiple titles. For me he's a top 10, 15 player on clay. It's going to be tough.

His ranking now is 60, 70. He's one of those players, where he's playing well, he's not an easy player to play.

I have to come into this match 100% from the first point. That's going to be very important for me, you know.

Q. What do you make of your draw more generally?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I saw the first two matches potentially. It's tough. Everybody in the first round can play. I don't look any more further ahead. The times I've looked further ahead, I've sort of lost. I think you have to respect everyone. Everybody can beat everybody here. It's a Grand Slam. Everyone is playing to win, playing for themselves at the best level. They've prepared at their best.

For me this first round is important. After that I'll see who I play, but I really don't care.

Q. It's going to be hot, Monday and Tuesday.
BERNARD TOMIC: It's not going to be easy. I just have to deal with it. It's going to be the same for everybody on that day. Tuesday is going to be tough. I have to be hydrated, ready. We've seen many times here at the Open where people are not physically ready, have to withdraw. It gets sometimes out of hand sometimes with the heat. It's something you have to play, not just the opponent, but the heat. I guess I have to be ready for this.

Q. There's been a lot spoken about your fitness. Where would you rank it out of 10?
BERNARD TOMIC: I think honestly, if I can say there are 50 people fitter than me outside of the top 70 to 150 in the world. There are some players not as fit as me inside the top 10, 15 in the world.

Will fitness help them? I don't think so. I feel obviously the big servers, Isner, Raonic, Kyrgios, Karlovic are there. I don't think fitness can help them. Fitness has got me... I've based my sport, what I've got in my career, with my serve, my ability to play tennis.

I think there are many fitter players than me that are outside the top 100 in the world. I think we can skip this question.

Q. Has your weight stabilized?
BERNARD TOMIC: I'm not going to answer that.

Q. How would you describe your sort of hunger or desperation for bigger and better things this year, at this tournament, and in 2017 generally? How high of goals do you set for yourself, what is success, what is failure?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, top 10 is my goal. Top 20, because my goal two years ago, a year and a half ago. I achieved that from being 130 in the world prior to two surgeries from that. Now my goal is to get to top 10 and stay there many years. You have to work for this. It's not going to happen overnight.

I think my year last year was pretty solid. I didn't play many tournaments. I think I pulled out of two Masters Series. I think I only play two Masters Series out of the nine. My ranking ended 26 at the end of the year, from a start of 17, 18. I think I did reasonably well last year compared to the tournaments I missed.

Yeah, this year I have to play all the Masters Series and try to do well at them. I'm looking forward to this year.

Q. Are there big steps between you and the top 10 or are you already doing everything right?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I think there are a lot of good players in the top 20, top 30 that are top-10 players. You got to get there. You got to earn it. Whether it comes like that or in four, five years, you know, you obviously are going to get your chance. If you're consistent, you work hard, do the right things, you have a big chance at this.

There are, like I said, many, many players from top 20, 30 in the world that are amazing tennis players, potentially play better than some of the guys in the top 10. But it's a different game. You have to be more consistent, you have to work for this. It takes a year. It doesn't take three tournaments.

Q. You've been pretty consistent here throughout the years. Is that because it's at home, the time of year? How do you explain that?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I think this is my ninth Australian Open. I'm 24, just turned. This is my ninth Australian Open. It's crazy to think how long it's been. I obviously played my first match year at 16, where I think I won the youngest match. It's gone pretty quickly. I always played well. Always made a lot of third rounds, fourth rounds. I'd like to go a step further, play better.

But, yeah, it's obviously a tough draw. It's going to be tough. I think I've got to use the moment, use the crowd. Obviously the fans get behind me, I'm sure they will. They always get behind our Australian players and support them to their limits. I think that's what makes us play really good in Australia.

Q. When you say you're not looking at the wins and losses, other people are saying it's not great preparation. What make you more confident, what makes you shrug this off?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, yeah, I think I chose to play a few different events as opposed to playing Sydney like I played in the past four, five years. So I feel like, yeah, Brisbane I lost to a former world No. 3. It was a tough match. I take a lot from it. I went down to Sydney, played the exhibition. Same as Kooyong. Different sort of matches, I was working on a few things. I don't really rate these matches as winning or losing, Sydney and Kooyong. That's not important to me. What's important for me is to get out on the court, do my thing and work on a few things I needed to do. And just to be ready mentally for the Open. I played very good in my past here where I haven't been prepared for tournaments. Sometimes it happens just like that. Sometimes I prepared well and not been as ready.

But that's tennis. Players work hard, try their ass off, sometimes you lose. Sometimes you're less prepared, and you do well.

Q. You're looking forward to the fans getting behind you? To 10,000 Aussies. Be put out on Hisense?
BERNARD TOMIC: I think Hisense is an amazing court. It's huge. The atmosphere builds there. Everybody is behind everybody. It's a good court.

Regardless of where I play, I think I'm going to have huge support. It's an amazing feeling to see people supporting in a Grand Slam the Australian players. It's very motivating. I hope the fans can all support us.
