Bernard Tomic tastes first-round defeat in North Carolina

AUSTRALIAN Bernard Tomic has endured another North American hardcourt setback, exiting the opening round of the ATP tournament in North Carolina to go into the US Open with plenty to prove.

The 61st-ranked player from Queensland notched his only ATP match win since Wimbledon in the first round at Montreal, where he beat Lu Yen-Hsun.

He then fell to France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and lost his opener in Cincinnati last week to France's Julien Benneteau.

On Sunday it was Russian Igor Andreev who sent Tomic packing 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 in little more than two hours in a contest peppered with 22 aces.

Andreev, known for for his clay success, played excellent defence as he saved all nine break points he faced while cracking Tomic's serve twice.

The Russian avenged a five-set Wimbledon loss to the Aussie teenager, who reached the quarter-finals at the All England Club.

That Wimbledon success hasn't been followed up, however, and the youngster heads to his first US Open main draw lacking match toughness.

"It's a new tournament," Tomic said of this event, switched from New Haven to North Carolina.

"I played well in the first set but he improved and did better than me overall."

"I need be as physically fit as I can for next week, I need to build some strength before the Open."

Tomic's exit leaves two-time grand slam winner Lleyton Hewitt to fly the Aussie flag.

However, the one-time No.1 now ranked 165 who has not played for nearly a month thanks to a nagging problem with his foot, will likely be tested in his opening match against Slovenian Blaz Kavcic.

Rafter advises Tomic to pull his socks up

Obrazek

Aussie teenaged hope Bernard Tomic has gotten some stern advice from his Davis Cup coach, with Patrick Rafter advising the youngster to start working harder if he wants to make an impression in the game.

It's not all one-way traffic from coach to pupil: the Australian team needs Wimbledon quarter-finalist Tomic to make a breakthrough now that 199th-ranked Lleyton Hewitt is clearly entering the endgame of his brilliant career.

Tomic, 18 and ranked 59th, beat Robin Sodering at Wimbledon and won a set off of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. But Australian tennis has a proud history and Tomic will have to lift his game, according to Rafter, who handed over the torch a decade ago to the young gun Hewitt.

"If he wants to work hard, he will get the results, and he's got to start having consistent results every time he walks on the court," said Rafter as Australia was denied a return to the Davis Cup World Group in a 3-2 loss in Sydney to Switzerland.

Added two-time US Open winner Rafter, one of the most popular Aussies ever to play the game: "That has been one of the weak parts of his game - that he is not applying himself day in, day out - and so that's up to him.

"He's got a lot of great things and great strengths about his game, but he has to commit to it. I think he's physically okay, but on court he needs to be just a bit more disciplined in his attitude and do a bit more hard work - just get a lot more miles in his legs and (be) ready to just sort of take on those matches day in, day out, over a long period of time."

The former US and Australian Open junior winner has yet to lift a first ATP title.

Roy Emerson says be patient with Bernard Tomic

Obrazek
Bernard Tomic in action during the recent Davis Cup tie against Switzerland.

SIX-times singles champion Roy Emerson urged restraint with the crushing expectations on emerging tennis teenager Bernard Tomic at the Australian Open in January.

Emerson said that, while he liked what he saw with Tomic, there were no guarantees of success in tennis.

The former Australian great was impressed at how Tomic pushed eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, and Roger Federer's tough battle to overcome the 18-year-old in the Davis Cup tie in Sydney two weeks ago.

"Federer said he was very difficult to read, where he was going with his shots. When someone like Federer makes a statement like that, it means Tomic has got a lot going for him," Emerson said at the 2012 Australian Open launch at Melbourne Park.

"Be patient, because there's a lot of pressure on him now. It remains to be seen if he has grown up enough right now to handle it.

"He's going to get stronger and he has got a chance, if he continues like he is, of winning (the Open), if not this year, next year. It may put a little more pressure on.

"But it's something you've got to overcome."

Tomic is the youngest player in the world top 100 rankings. Emerson said, at the same age, he was a junior with a Davis Cup team for his first overseas trip.

Emerson also warned that Lleyton Hewitt should not be written off, just yet.

"He has relied a lot on his court coverage and, with the injuries, that might have slowed him down a little. But whoever beats Lleyton, will know they've been in a match," he said.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters and 2010 titleholder Serena Williams have indicated they will be back.

Emerson says Tomic could be the wave of Aussie future

Obrazek

Australia's six-time Grand Slam-winning great Roy Emerson has tipped Queensland youngster Bernard Tomic for stardom but urged the teenager to keep up the work on his game.

Tomic peaked this season with a Wimbledon quarterfinal, which gives observers of the Aussie's game hope for the future. He also put up a fight in a losing Davis Cup effort against Roger Federer in Davis Cup at Sydney last month.

"Federer said he was very difficult to read, where he was going with his shots. When someone like Federer makes a statement like that, it means Tomic has got a lot going for him," said "Emmo," who helped launch the 2012 Australian Open.

"But be patient, because there's a lot of pressure on him now. It remains to be seen if he has grown up enough right now to handle it.

"He's going to get stronger and he has got a chance, if he continues like he is, of winning (the Open), if not this year, next year. It may put a little more pressure on. But it's something you've got to overcome."

Tomic stands as the youngest player in the ATP Top 100 and is playing this week in Tokyo.

Australia's Bernard Tomic into third round at Japan Open

AUSTRALIAN Bernard Tomic has beaten local hope Tatsuma Ito in the second round of the Japan Open in Tokyo.

The 18-year-old Wimbledon quarter-finalist beat the Japanese wild card 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 7-5 in their first meeting to set up a third round match with fourth-seeded American Mardy Fish, who eased past Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-2 6-4.

World No.4 Andy Murray suffered a major scare before finally beating a dogged Marcos Baghdatis to reach the second round of the Japan Open.

The 24-year-old Briton, fresh from victory at the Thailand Open last week, needed a tough two hours and 33 minutes to see off the big-serving Cypriot 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-4.

"That was very tough and long. I did a lot of running, especially in the first two sets," said Murray, after only his second win over Baghdatis in five meetings.

He said it was difficult to adjust after organisers were forced to close the roof on centre court because of persistent rain.

"I think he played very well under the conditions. It took me a little bit longer," said Murray.

"We were playing good tennis in the third set, but in the first two sets he definitely played better than me. It's lucky that I got the first-set tie-break.

"He's a very, very good player. He's a very tough guy to play against.

"He has a lot of talent and he has a big serve."

Murray got off to a slow start, going down 0-2 in the first set before battling back to go a set ahead on the tie-break. He went down 0-4 in the second set and never recovered, as Baghdatis made it one set all.

The second-seeded Murray was again 1-3 down in the final set. But he managed to make it even at 3-3 with a break in the sixth game and went on to take a 5-4 lead as the two men held their serves.

Murray's backhand went long on his first match point and, after repeating deuces five times, Murray had another match point when Baghdatis hit a double fault.

Murray clinched his ticket to the second round when Baghdatis, a finalist in Malaysia last week, hit a backhand out.

In the second round he will take on American Alex Bogomolov Jr, who defeated Jarkko Nieminen of Finland on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, who defeated Baghdatis in the Malaysian Open final, failed to keep the momentum, losing to Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 in just over three hours.

In second round action, fifth seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic was a 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 winner over Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland.

Tomic wygrał swój mecz 1 rundy w Szanghaju. Pokonał w 3 setach Kevina Andersona z RPA.
WIMBLEDON quarter-finalist Bernard Tomic is into the second round of the ATP Shanghai Masters.

Tomic beat South African Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 in a match dominated by serve, the Australian forcing the only break of the contest in the decider.

"I'm happy I won against a player like Kevin because he can beat so many world class players on his day," said Tomic, who achieved a career-high ranking of 49 on Monday.

"I was happy to break him in that third and I think that's what won the match.

Tomic upends Fish in Shanghai upset

Obrazek

Bernard Tomic continues to impress during his breakout year. The Wimbledon qualifier-turned-quarterfinalist claimed Mardy Fish as his most recent victim.

After a solid start, that included a break of Bernard Tomic’s serve in the first set, Mardy Fish crumbled at the hands of the Australian.

Tomic had one brief lapse in the opening set in the seventh game which allowed the American to take the lead. Tomic had chances at 4-3 to get the break back, but Fish served his way out of trouble to hold onto the slight edge.

Fish completely imploded in the second set. Tomic toyed with the American, weaving carved, off-pace shots with blistering backhand passes. Fish, who is usually a good sport on court, allowed Tomic’s tactics to make him testy.

Tomic continued to apply pressure to the Fish serve in the third set. The Australian had a number of opportunities to break, but Fish clawed his way to 4-4 largely on the strength of his serve-volley game. Still, the American went to the well one too many times. Tomic finally secured the only break of the set for 5-4 and despite opening with a double-fault in his last service game, held decisively.

He awaits the winner of Alexandr Dolgopolov and Albert Ramos in the third round.

Re: Bernard Tomic

Oczywiście, niezwykle skutecznie :P
Zdaje się, że to na razie niewiadoma. Jeśli szansa na numerek przed AO będzie naprawdę duża, to pewnie warto przeciągnąć formę na jakiś turniej w Europie.

Na tę chwilę najbliższy start turniejowy Bernarda to Kooyong 2012. Herald Sun twierdzi, że Tomic u nich zagra.
