Już kiedyś pisałem, że oglądam skoki w Eurosporcie HD, a nie patrzę na pikselozę TVP. Może i Gregor podrósł, ale raczej już nie będzie wyższy. Do 25-26 lat trwa rozwój psychiczny człowieka, a nie fizyczny. Najwyższy człowiek w historii (Robert Wadlow, 272cm) osiągnął swój wzrost w 16. roku życia... Niestety zmarł w wieku 22 lat.

In an era of tennis characterised by ever homogenising court surfaces, a static top ten and a rather tedious prevalence of baseline play, the sport is crying out for a top player to emerge who plays with something approaching flair, ingenuity and flamboyance. Roger Federer epitomizes these qualities but is nearing his thirties and has his best days behind him, while Andy Murray possesses the tools to play both a varied baseline game and to effectively finish points at the net, but lacks the mental intangibles to fully utilise his abilities on the biggest stage.

Going through the current ATP top 30 makes depressing reading – the vast majority of players have solid two handed backhands, possess excellent lateral movement and defense (those who move sluggishly tend to compensate with a cannon of a serve – read, John Isner, Andy Roddick) but move towards the net with a great reluctance and lack both volleying technique and the awareness of how to cut off angles for passing shots.

Tomic, not unlike fellow counter-puncher and strategist Andy Murray, does not suffer for lack of natural talent or variety in his game. On the surface his style has some facets which are symptomatic of the generic modern game – a two handed backhand, excellent defensive anticipation and a inclination toward prolonged baseline points. What separates Tomic from this group is his unique technique and tactical variety. His languid, relaxed style on the forehand and his willingness to hit a series of slow, floated slices followed by a flat, risky forehand are among the facets which mark him as a potential saviour from a future tennis scene dominated by those with great consistency and athletic talents but scant in the way of court craft or ingenuity (think along the lines of Viktor Troicki).

Strengths & Weaknesses

Tomic’s unusual forehand technique is perhaps the most notable of his traits. One feature of modern tennis is a progression of players hitting with greater amounts of topspin, especially on the forehand. Most players now employ a semi western or full western grip on their forehand and follow through on the shot with a high finish (occasionally, like Nadal, with a lasso style above-the-head finish), both of which combine to produce maximum topspin.

Tomic’s forehand does not conform to the modern standard, but is not exactly a traditional stroke either. He has a moderate semi-western grip, a short take back and a fairly lateral motion throughout the swing, as opposed to a low-to-high finish. Consequently, Tomic’s forehand is concurrently a strength and a weakness. As a more conservative rallying shot it is vulnerable to falling short and inviting pressure from the opponent, but equally when he decides to go for a flat hit, can act as a deadly and unexpected weapon (crucially, owing to his technique, Tomic can vary the pace on his forehand without changing the take back on his swing).

Tomic possesses other weapons which are a rarity on the tour today; an almost insultingly effortless slice backhand which he can skim low over the net cross-court or just as easily hit down the line with vicious side-spin, producing both shots with the kind of grace which makes a mockery of Nadal and Djokovic’s muscling of the ball; a beautiful feel on both sides, particularly for drop shots; solid, textbook volleying technique; a good return of serve aided by a short take back on both forehand and backhand; a good service action which, although has ample room for improvement, produces a pacey and dangerous first serve; the ability to change direction of the ball with ease; and a great spatial awareness on the court which helps to compensate for his lack of foot speed and aides his already intelligent shot selection.

While it may seem harsh to point out flaws while he is still so young, there are obviously areas for improvement in Tomic’s game. Besides the aforementioned weakness in his rallying forehand, he also needs work on his second serve, which unfortunately resembles too much that of Murray’s (slow, lacking kick and easily attackable). Some have placed question marks over his attitude, pointing out his occasional arrogant off-court statements and seemingly indifferent attitude on the court. While clearly he hasn’t fully developed physically, at present he certainly fits into the ‘lanky’ category, and his rather anaemic movement around the court reflects this (although some connect this to the aforementioned indifference on court).

Predictions

- Tomic will be a top 5 player and a grand slam contender within the next three years; TennisNiche predicts multiple grand slam titles and the no. 1 spot but this is heavily dependant on how Tomic’s character develops and whether he can stay injury free.
- As for 2012, TennisNiche will go out on a limb and predict the following:
- 1 Grand Slam semi-final (Wimbledon or the US Open) and one 4th round. An early exit at Roland Garros seems a near certainty owing to his lack of wins on clay at the professional level.
- 1 Masters Series final (probably later in the year, at Shanghai or Paris), and one semi-final.
- 1 victory over the ‘top 4′ of Federer/ Nadal/ Djokovic/ Murray in a best of 3 format.

If top seed Andy Murray becomes Bernard Tomic's latest scalp at the Brisbane International, he may only have himself to blame after giving the Australian No.1 a huge wrap ahead of Saturday's semi-final clash.

World No.42 Tomic, 19, was ecstatic enough after moving through to his first ATP semi-final with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win over Uzbek Denis Istomin.

But the eighth seed dared to dream of building on his great Australian Open build-up and toppling the world No.4, after Murray pumped up the teenager on Friday.

Tomic had every right to feel nervous after watching Murray dispatch Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 6-2 6-2 in their quarter-final in just over an hour.

However, Tomic - who had never progressed past the Brisbane International first round on three previous occasions - felt like a world beater after hearing Murray's thoughts.

Murray, 24, has never officially played Tomic, but a series of hit-outs with him - and the teen's stellar run - has ensured the Scot will be wary on Saturday.

"He's very unorthodox, very intelligent on court, got a good tennis IQ," Murray said.

"You have to be very focussed against him.

"He can play a couple of games when he doesn't do much then play three or four great games."

Told of Murray's comments, a beaming Tomic said: "It is a good feeling for him to say that.

"Tomorrow will be a test for me to see where I am."

After taking sets off heavyweights Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal during his breakthrough 2011, Tomic backed his chances of an upset in a best-of-three sets semi-final.

"I have played the other players Roger (Federer), Rafa and Novak but I haven't played him - it is a good opportunity tomorrow," Tomic said.

"I am ready. I know I can take sets off these (world top four) guys.

"In a best-of-three match like this ... maybe I can pull off a win."

The youngest player in the top 50 admitted he could not have asked for a better preparation for the Australian Open, where he lost in the third round to Nadal.

But the Wimbledon quarter-finalist was not surprised by his Brisbane success after adding 3kg to his 196cm frame in an intensive off-season program.

One interested observer ahead of their semi-final clash was Australian Darren Cahill, who had helped coach Murray.

"An interesting battle of the surgeons," he tweeted, referring to their playing styles.

Murray's new coach Ivan Lendl arrived in Australia on Friday and is expected to link with the Scot by Saturday.

But Murray appeared to be doing pretty well without him.

In his first tournament since recovering from a groin strain, Murray moved freely for the first time on Friday after ditching the strapping for a right knee complaint that had troubled him.

French second seed Gilles Simon takes on Ukraine's world No.15 Alexandr Dolgopolov - the third seed - in the opening semi-final on Saturday.

Bernard Tomic continues to impress with attitude

BERNARD Tomic has declared that he's out to have a bit of fun with his tennis.

His opponents at next week's Australian Open will do well not to take that too literally - the talented kid with the questionable attitude appears to have done a lot of growing up in a short time, physically, emotionally and mentally.

Everybody is saying so - and expecting a lot.

At windswept Kooyong a small band of dedicated tennis fans were the latest to be impressed when Tomic, 19, gave a top 10 player, Czech Tomas Berdych, a set start in challenging conditions and ended up with his scalp.

It was a confident, composed and occasionally clever performance that might be of limited importance given the AAMI Classic's status as an up-market practice opportunity, but which still should not be discarded as meaningless.

Certainly Tomic took it seriously, saying: "I like to win as much as I can. I played really well. I'm happy. I think I'm getting ready for the Open."

Everything Tomic does in this campaign - beginning with his encouraging quarter-final progress in Brisbane last week - will be come under intense scrutiny.

With Lleyton Hewitt long ago descending deep into Mission Impossible territory, Tomic takes over as the attention magnet. In every way he seems better equipped to handle it.

Physically, he has literally grown up, no longer adding centimetres to his big frame. He seemed unsure yesterday precisely what the tape now shows, but the Tour book says 196cm, or 6' 5" in the old - ruckman-size.

He has also put on three or four kilos, bringing him to a powerful 92kg - and it is noticeable on court. The boy is very much a man now.

He reckons he is well built for the job, even though the top stars - Federer, Nadal, Djokovic - are all between 185 and 188cm, a significant difference.

"My movement is 20 per cent better since I stopped growing and I'm serving better," he said.

His ranking is at a career high No.37 with a bullet, a reflection of mounting experience and confidence.

He has now played all of the top four men and is looking forward to meeting the rest of the top 10, knowing he will not be out of his depth.

"It's a strange feeling walking out against players I've watched on TV growing up, but it's a good feeling knowing you can play well against them," he said.

His three appearances at the Open have seen him through to the second round twice and the third round last year, so, as with everything else in his career, the graph is pointing north.

The next big thing appears to be getting bigger in every way.

Cahill: Fitness makes Tomic more formidable

Coach and TV analyst Darren Cahill says that Bernard Tomic’s physical improvements have made him a more formidable player, and that fitness will be the key for the 19-year-old Australian in 2012

"His movement is far improved on what it was 12 months ago, and also his recovery, which is going to be important for him,'' Cahill told the Age. "If he's going to play at the top level, against Top 10 players, week in week out, and put together those two and three and four good matches in a row, that's where the big improvement has to come from, and it looks like he's on the right path. He has more of a man's body these days. He's got a man's head, that's for sure. He's got a really intelligent tennis brain and he can find angles of the court that a lot of players can't find. He's got that uncanny ability to put the ball in an uncomfortable position, to change the pace of the ball, to give it a different spin, and not too many tennis players can do that."
