Mackenzie McDonald is the first unranked player to qualify for an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.
Come what may, Mackenzie McDonald will go down in history as the first unranked teenager to qualify for an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. In 1995, Sergio Casal was unranked and qualified for Miami, but had previously been ranked. In 1994, Ken Flach was unranked and qualified for Cincinnati, but, like Casal, had held a ranking before.
On Monday, 18-year-old McDonald will face World No. 80 David Goffin in the first round in Cincinnati.
"I can't even explain how I feel right now, said McDonald, who was offered a wild card into qualifying by Jay Berger. "I didn't expect to win two rounds and qualify for this event. I was supposed to be playing a college tournament in Indiana. I was thinking about going to Indiana instead, but I realised what this tournament is and I decided to take advantage of it.
“I’m having a blast out here,” said McDonald, who defeated Nicolas Mahut and Steve Johnson to qualify. “There’s a lot less pressure on me than some of the other guys, but serving out the matches I felt a lot of pressure and I played some great points.
“It’s an unbelievable experience. I’m just trying to soak up as much as I can this week. I’m learning a lot from talking to some of the American players. I’ve seen about 40 of the Top 50 here already. It’s an honour for me to even be in there with them. I’ve been getting the routine down. How they eat, how they stretch, how they get massages. Just observing different routines they have in the fitness before. That’s what I’m soaking up.”
Berkeley native McDonald is a college player at UCLA and has been coached by former South African professional Wayne Ferreira since he was 11 years old. “I still have a lot to learn and develop. I can definitely gain a lot from college. I want to utilise the fitness and all the pros that are there too. I’ve been hitting with Christian Groh, Tommy Haas’ coach, while I’m there. I hit with Tommy there too. I can get bigger, I can get stronger. [Ferreira] is an absolutely lovely guy. He’s always been so supportive. He’s so relaxed and calm and he’s kept me on the right path.”
