Dan Evans reflects on ‘depressing’ absence as Roger Federer backs him for rankings charge

An emotional Dan Evans admitted he was ‘pretty much depressed’ during last year’s Australian Open, when he was serving a year-long drugs ban, and confessed he wasn’t sure if he’d ever play again. The Brit tested positive for cocaine in April 2017 and lost his ranking completely as he stepped away from the sport. Evans, 28, returned to the sport just nine months ago and battled his way through qualifying to make a comeback at Grand Slam level, winning his first-round match before being handed a headline clash with Roger Federer. Just at home in Cheltenham, and just in the house – pretty much depressed, actually. I didn’t think I’d ever play again. Brit qualifier Daniel Evans reached his third tour-level quarter-final – and first since the 2017 Sydney International. The 28-year-old, No. 148 in the ATP Rankings, routed South Africa's Lloyd Harris 6-0, 6-2 in only 69 minutes.

Evans upset third seed and defending champion Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday night. The Brit will face Italy's Andreas Seppi, who outplayed Aussie Jordan Thompson 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Next up for the American is British qualifier Daniel Evans, who continued his top form with a 6-4, 6-4 win over sixth seed Andreas Seppi. Evans raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set and maintained control of the baseline rallies to move into his first ATP Tour semi-final since the 2017 Sydney International.

The World No. 148 has jumped nearly 45 spots in the ATP Rankings since the start of 2019. He opened this season by qualifying for the Australian Open and advancing to the second round, then finished runner-up earlier this month at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Quimper. The Brit recorded the first big upset of the week in Delray Beach by defeating third seed Frances Tiafoe in the opening round.

Brit seeks his third ATP Tour semi-final
Daniel Evans on Wednesday advanced to his third tour-level quarter-final, defeating 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals alternate Lloyd Harris 6-0, 6-2 at the Delray Beach Open presented by VITACOST.com. The Brit has won four matches this week after coming through qualifying.

“Still a lot of tennis left this week and hopefully [I'll] keep going," said Evans before speaking of the windy Florida conditions. "I’m moving really well, I think. It’s just the way it is. I’m moving great and the wind actually suits my game quite well. It’s difficult to hit off the slice as well. I feel I’m playing good."

Evans will play Italian Andreas Seppi for a spot in his third ATP Tour semi-final, as he is trying to stay undefeated (2-0) in the last eight at this level. The World No. 148, who upset defending champion Frances Tiafoe in the first round, has never faced Seppi.

“He’s a great player," Evans said. "I love the way he plays. It’s going to be good fun.”

Evans Stuns Isner To Reach Delray Beach Final

There will be a first-time ATP Tour titlist in Delray Beach

Great Britain’s Daniel Evans stunned John Isner and the American’s home crowd on Saturday, defeating the top seed 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com final.

There will be a first-time ATP Tour champion on Sunday, as Evans will face Moldovan Radu Albot, who will compete in his first final at this level. World No. 148 Evans is into just his second tour-level championship match after finishing runner-up at the 2017 Sydney International (l. to Muller).

"I just play every match as it comes, every point, every game. It sounds very cliché but... I'm just playing every match. It's not about beating John, it's not about beating [Andreas] Seppi. The ball is coming and I'm just trying to focus on myself," Evans said. "I'm moving well, I'm playing pretty good, so I think I'm difficult to play."

Isner appeared in good position with a 6-3, 2-2 lead, attempting to reach his first Delray Beach championship in his fourth semi-final at the event. Until that point, Isner had not been broken in 77 service games, with his most recent loss of serve coming in the fourth set of his opening-round defeat at the Australian Open against Reilly Opelka.

"I started to see his serve pretty well. I wouldn't say I was guessing, but I was sort of anticipating and I got it right," Evans said. "Other days I could be looking stupid going one way and he puts it the other way."

But Evans broke Isner three times in a row to completely change the momentum. The Brit used his one-handed backhand well once they got into rallies, keeping Isner's offence at bay, especially with his backhand slice. Isner made just 60 per cent of his first serves in the second set, allowing Evans to work his way into more rallies and put pressure on Isner to finish points, leading to errors from the baseline.

"I returned really well when I got my racquet on the ball, and that was my goal," Evans said. "Just to get the ball back and get the running shoes on."

Evans has now won six matches in the tournament after coming through qualifying. In the first round of the main draw, he trailed defending champion Frances Tiafoe 1-4 in the third set of their first-round match, and had also come within two points of defeat in the second set. This was his third victory against an opponent inside the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings, also defeating Dominic Thiem (Sydney) and Marin Cilic (Australian Open) in January 2017.

"It's tennis. You get through those matches, you get another chance the next day, and I don't know about fate, but funny things do happen when you scrape through the first round," Evans said. "I'm playing good, so hopefully tomorrow I win."

Evans' opponent in the final, Albot, defeated home favourite Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 in one hour and 30 minutes.

"It's tennis, you have to win two [sets]. You lose one, you still fight, and that's what I was doing," Albot said. "I'm really happy that I could win the second and third. I'm really happy that I could win [those sets] 6-0, 6-0."

The Moldovan had reached two previous ATP Tour semi-finals, in Metz last September and in Montpellier earlier this month. But on each of those occasions, Albot won just four games. It appeared McDonald was in control after the first set, appearing to have too much firepower from the baseline for the 29-year-old.

But McDonald started to make errors off the forehand wing, and Albot took full advantage, putting an increasing amount of pressure on the American by making almost no mistakes during rallies and successfully counter-punching. Albot won 72 per cent of his return points in the final two sets.

If Albot defeats Evans, he will become the first Moldovan to win an ATP Tour title, and move to the fringe of the Top 50 in the ATP Rankings. The only other Moldovan to reach the Top 200 since records have been kept is Roman Borvanov, whose career-high was No. 200 (in 2011).

"Tomorrow is a different day, different match," Albot said. "I think I need to relax a little bit, enjoy the moment and I will think about [the final] a little bit later."

Daniel Evans began the 2019 season just inside the Top 200, at World No. 192. The Brit lost in the first round of an ATP Challenger Tour event to start his year, but he has not looked back since.

The 28-year-old won at least four matches (not all tour-level) in four consecutive tournaments, including a run to his first ATP Tour final in Delray Beach. He was close to making that stretch even more impressive, missing out on three championship points in the Delray Beach final, which would have earned him another 100 points.

Nevertheless, Evans earned 325 points during that period, helping him return to the Top 100 for the first time since September 2017. Evans will now try to chase his career-high of No. 41, which he achieved in March 2017.

Evans, who celebrated his 29th birthday two weeks ago, lifted the seventh Challenger trophy of his career and first on grass.
After fighting for a three-set win over Marius Copil in Saturday's semi-finals, it was smooth sailing against Viktor Troicki in the championship. Evans clinched a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory in just 65 minutes, securing his return to the Top 70 of the ATP Rankings for the first time since August 2017. It has been a career-year for the Brit, who also reached his second ATP Tour final on the hard courts of Delray Beach in February.
“It’s a great start to the grass-court season,” said Evans. “Viktor seemed a bit flat and I got on top early. I could have been even more clinical in the second set. It was a tough week of matches and I am just grateful to get those in and come through with no injuries. I lost to Jeremy Chardy here last year and Dustin Brown before that, so this was good. The quality and competition is always high at this tournament.”
The Birmingham native is the first British player to win a Challenger title on home soil since Evans claimed his maiden title in Jersey in 2009. He is also the first player from Great Britain to win a grass-court Challenger title since Alex Bogdanovic in Nottingham in 2005.

British No. 3 returns to Queen's Club on heels of back-to-back Challenger titles
Mother Nature has played a role in many professional tournaments over the years, but few have been as chaotic as the 2019 Nature Valley Open.

What transpired in Nottingham could only be described as unprecedented for the region, as northern England endured a deluge of rain throughout the week. Not only did Daniel Evans survive a stacked draw, but the unpredictable weather as well.

On Sunday, the Brit celebrated his second title in as many weeks, extending his win streak to 10 straight with an impressive victory at the prestigious tournament. Evans defeated Evgeny Donskoy 7-6(3), 6-3 in what was their first encounter in six years, after ousting Go Soeda earlier in the day.

“It’s been a good week, carrying on strongly from last week,” Evans said. “I played very well in the first match [today]. The second match, I was a bit frustrated and I was very tired. But I didn’t lose a set today, so I can’t be too unhappy. I played well out there, despite the wind.”

The win gave the 29-year-old a historic grass-court double, having also triumphed in Surbiton a week ago. He joins Yen-Hsun Lu as the only players to win consecutive Challenger titles on grass in the past 20 years. Lu went back-to-back in Surbiton and Ilkley in 2016.

The unrelenting rain interrupted play every day of the week, including a total washout on Monday and a move indoors from Tuesday through Friday. And with a WTA Tour event also taking place at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, it was a mad scramble throughout the week.

In the end, Evans would win his quarter-final on the grass on Saturday, before defeating Soeda and Donskoy on Sunday. He moves up seven spots to No. 63 in the ATP Rankings.

Evans is proving to be quite a force on the grass, using his flat groundstrokes and cutting backhand slice to find his top form on the surface. One year after finishing runner-up to Alex de Minaur in Nottingham, he has gone one step further on home soil. The Birmingham native is the first British winner here since Greg Rusedski in 2003, when the tournament was on the ATP Tour.

On Sunday, Evans lifted the Paul Hutchins Trophy, named after the longtime Nottingham tournament director and British Davis Cup captain, who recently passed away.

“It’s amazing to be the first winner of the Paul Hutchins Trophy – he was a massive part of me growing up. He was here last year and it feels a bit empty without him this year. It was really good to win, and hopefully he watched down on that."

Evans will next head to Queen's Club in London for the Fever-Tree Championships, an ATP 500 event. He opens against Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday.
