Kiedyś tam go widziałem, na US Open bodajże.

Ponadto jest on 3-krotnym Mistrzem stanu Kansas.

18-latek podpisał kontrakt z Adidasem i CAA Sport.

Ready or not, it's prime time for Sock

Obrazek

There were more fans clustered around the Jack Sock-Melanie Oudin mixed doubles match than one would ever expect to find on Court 6. And though Sock must have felt the presence of all eyes on him, the loose, lanky teenager smiled and laughed with his teammate and bumped fists with her during tough points as though no one was around.

Early in the first set, with the sun beginning to make its descent into the west, Sock tossed a ball in the air and brought his racquet back, poised to uncoil and rip an ace. As the ball lingered in the air waiting for Sock to unleash his monster serve, it was hard not to notice the presence of a looming structure casting a shadow on the young player. Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tennis’ biggest stage and the crowning glory of every young American coming up in the game.

As the schedule for the following day of play had been released just hours before, the crowd knew who the corn-fed kid from Nebraska was. Jack Sock was no longer playing in relative obscurity. Tomorrow night, he’d be on that big court, that main stage, in front of 23,000 fans, in front of a live national television audience. And he looked ready for his close up.

At 18 years old, in his third-ever match in a Grand Slam, the 6’1” Sock from Lincoln, Neb., has run smack into fellow American and perennial US Open star Andy Roddick in the second round of play, launching the teenager straight into prime time. He will play Roddick tonight in Arthur Ashe Stadium following the women’s match of Maria Kirilenko vs. Christina McHale, another up-and-coming American teen, live on ESPN2.

Sock advanced to round two by staying strong and overcoming veteran Frenchman Marc Gicquel in in a tough four-setter that he eventually won 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. He got his first taste of the spotlight in that match, playing on Court 17, the fourth largest court in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He had a large and vocal American contingent cheering him on under the big stadium lights, which helped propel him to the victory.

“Yes, obviously it helps,” he said following the match. “Being at the US Open is the biggest stage for the Americans by far. Obviously, I mean, I really like the new court. It's a sweet atmosphere. Kind of you're down lower playing, but there are people right there by you. So I think it really helped. Yeah, obviously when you have encouragement it's always a boost for you.”

The young American showed steely resolve in his first Grand Slam win on Wednesday, overcoming some challenges in his match against the 34-year-old Gicquel. After putting up a dominating performance in the first two sets, Sock folded in the third set, allowing Gicquel to break him early.

“I think he found a decent rhythm in the third,” he said. “He broke me pretty early. I think I might have lost some timing or something. I took a bathroom break, had to go change and go to the bathroom, came back and kind of started slow. He got an early break. From there, he just got his rhythm and played well. Then I just started the fourth set all over.”

But he found himself in a similar situation in the fourth set, going down a break and fighting back from a 3-1 deficit in order to stay in the set. He capitalized on some lapses from the Frenchman and was able to win five of the last six games, including breaking Gicquel in the last game of the match.

“I was probably more alert after I got broken, for sure,” Sock said. “He was serving pretty well. I knew I had to buckle down, get the break back and stay in the set, which I did. Then just played a pretty good set from there and finally got the break at the end.”

The experience of overcoming adversity in a match against a player with more experience will serve Sock well in his upcoming challenge against crowd favorite Roddick.

If Sock stays in the game mentally, he has the tools to give Roddick a run for his money. Both Sock and Roddick are power servers. Sock had 14 aces in his first match, the fastest of which was 134 mph, while Roddick served up 13 aces in his first-round match against another American, Michael Russell, Wednesday night, the fastest of which was 135 mph.

The similarities between Sock and Roddick don’t end there. Sock has followed almost eerily in Roddick’s footsteps. Both were born in Nebraska, though Roddick moved to Austin, Texas, when he was four years old. Both Sock and Roddick won the US Open Junior Championships. Sock won last year’s boys' title at the age of 17, and Roddick won the US Open Junior Championships 10 years earlier in 2000 just after turning 18.

If Sock were to continue to follow in Roddick’s footsteps at the US Open, he’d have to beat his one-time tennis idol to stay on track to reach the quarterfinals, which is how far Roddick advanced in his second-ever US Open. And though it is a tough task, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Against 33-year-old veteran Russell, Roddick had a tough four-set match. While he breezed through his first two sets, 6-2, 6-4, in 57 minutes, the following two sets were considerably tougher. Roddick lost the third set 6-4 and had to play a 55-minute fourth set to eventually win 7-5 and advance to the third round.

The 21st-seeded Roddick comes into the US Open after having a tough season with losses and nagging injuries bothering him all throughout the year. After his match on Wednesday, he said, “I’m not going to pretend I’m in championship form.”

While Roddick has the benefit of years of experience playing under the stadium lights, he also has the baggage of crushing defeats. Sock has a clean slate, and he is playing like a young gun who is just happy to be there.

Sock and Oudin won that mixed doubles match in the shadow of Ashe, by the way. And Sock and doubles teammate Jackson Withrow also won their first-round match earlier in the week. Whether he can continue in the main draw or not, Sock’s now a bona fide US Open attraction.

Good luck finding seats at his next match.

Catching up with Jack Sock

Obrazek

Eighteen-year-old Jack Sock may be ranked No. 555 in the world right now, but his performance at this year’s US Open event, his first as a pro player, has been one that shows promise for a catapult up the ranks in the next few years. After receiving a wild card in men's singles for winning his second USTA Boys’ 18s National Championship, Sock took out No. 97 Marc Gicquel of France before meeting fellow American Andy Roddick on the big stage of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

There, the free-swinging Sock put up quite a fight against the player he grew up admiring, proving that his own power game was no pushover in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 loss.

But in week two of the Open, he’s still alive in the mixed doubles draw, where he and Melanie Oudin eliminated top seeds and defending champions Liezel Huber and Bob Bryan en route to the semifinals, where they face No. 7 team Elena Vesnina and Leander Paes.

Between a few rounds of card games with his team during the Wednesday morning rain delay, Sock took a break to sit down with USOpen.org and talk about making the transition from juniors to the pro level, his favorite TV shows and his hometown favorite Nebraska Cornhuskers team.

USOpen.org: Now that you’ve reached the semifinals of mixed doubles with Melanie Oudin, what has your experience been like at the event thus far?

Jack Sock: Well, anytime you get to play in the second week of the US Open, it’s a lot of fun. Through the entire tournament, I’ve just been playing relaxed and loose with no pressure. It’s the same in doubles with Melanie, we’re just out there playing relaxed and having a good time. There’s no reason for us to be nervous because as wild cards, we weren’t expecting a whole lot. So we’re having fun and enjoying every moment. And I think that’s helped us because we’re able to stay calm, even with all this rain.

USOpen.org: You just turned pro about a month ago. How has the transition been for you?

Jack Sock: I’m learning a lot about how everything works. Now that I finished high school and don’t have to worry about that anymore, I’m getting familiar with the ins and outs of the pro tour. I think the biggest difference, aside from the level of play, of course, is the overall professionalism among the players. The mentality is just different. These guys are out there playing for a living, it’s their job. With juniors, you can get away with taking it easy once in a while. It happened to me playing against Andy the other night, I played loose for a few games and let some opportunities get away from me. But I’m learning that you can’t afford to do that at the pro level.

USOpen.org: What has been your most memorable moment in tennis?

Jack Sock: Definitely I would have to say playing that night session match in Ashe against an amazing American player. Playing against Andy in front of that crowd was such a great experience for me, something I’ll never forget.

USOpen.org: You’ve made some pretty big strides in the past year as a major part of the next generation of American tennis, which includes Ryan Harrison, Christina McHale and Sloane Stephens, to name a few. What are your thoughts on the future, and how do you feel about your role in that up-and-coming group?

Jack Sock: I think the future looks bright for all of us. As younger players, we’re already starting to realize what it takes to do well and be competitive at this level. I think how we’re approaching matches is getting better, which is a good sign. And being able to see each other do so well, it’s motivation for the rest of us. At the same time, it pushes us harder to do well.

USOpen.org: What city or destinations would you most like to visit?

Jack Sock: Well, for the tennis, I would have to say the three other Grand Slams, and I’ve heard the cities there in London, Paris and Melbourne are all really nice places to visit. For vacation destinations, I guess I would say the Bahamas, because I really like going to the beach.

USOpen.org: What is your favorite reality TV show?

Jack Sock: Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch was pretty funny (laughing). But my favorite regular TV shows are Entourage and The Big Bang Theory.

USOpen.org: If you weren’t a pro tennis player, what would your dream job be?

Jack Sock: I think I would like to be an ESPN broadcaster or some kind of agent for professional athletes. It would definitely be something involved in sports because I’m a big sports guy.

USOpen.org: You considered going to University of Nebraska before deciding to turn pro. As a huge fan of the Cornhuskers, what are your thoughts on the football team’s chances in the Big Ten Conference this year?

Jack Sock: I think they’re looking really strong this season. With Bo Pelini leading the way as head coach, I think they’re going to do really well. Hopefully if my schedule works out, I’d really like to go out there and watch some games this season.

Brawo! :)

Sock awansował w rankingu singlowym. 2 runda US Open 2011 dała mu awans o 30 miejsc. 18-letni Amerykanin jest teraz 527 tenisistą świata.

No rewelka, nie zwróciłem uwagi. ;)

Sock Commit To 2012 Atlanta Tennis Championships

The Atlanta Tennis Championships announced Monday 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick, 2010-11 ATC finalist John Isner and US Open mixed doubles champion Jack Sock have committed to play in the tournament, which is the opening event of the Olympus US Open Series.

Sock scored his biggest achievement when he and Marietta, Ga.’s Melanie Oudin won the US Open mixed doubles crown last September which included a victory over the top-ranked team. Sock also won consecutive titles at the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championships in 2010-11.

Sock said, “It’s a real pleasure to attend the site announcement of Atlantic Station as the new home of the Atlanta Tennis Championships. This is a spectacular venue with a great ambiance and I can’t wait to compete here in July. I am truly honored for the tournament to include me in their plans and look forward to putting out the best performance I can.”

Tournament Director Bob Bryant said, “With the addition of Andy, John and Jack, we are far ahead of past years in bringing in top talent at such an early date. Atlanta tennis fans watched Andy win his first title here in 2001 and he’s been a crowd favorite ever since.

“Georgia Bulldog fans are familiar with Isner’s 140-mph-plus serve and powerful forehand and we expect to see even more impressive and thrilling tennis from him for many years to come. Jack burst on the scene by winning his first Grand Slam title at this year’s US Open, playing mixed doubles with Atlanta’s own Melanie Oudin. We’re excited that these great players will be competing in this year’s tournament.”

For more information about the event, please go to the official Atlanta Tennis Championships website here.
