Kevin Anderson and Kei Nishikori, Lucas Pouille and Philipp Kohlschreiber, who are competing at the Erste Bank Open 500, visited the Vienna State Opera on Monday.
Austria’s opera house, which employs more than 1,000 people, produces 50 to 60 operas per year and 10 ballet productions, including more than 350 performances.
Home hope Dominic Thiem, who is currently eighth in the ATP Race To London for a spot at the season finale, to be held at The O2 in London from 11-18 November, leads the ATP World Tour 500 field in Vienna. Seventh-placed Anderson and 10th-positioned Nishikori are also in contention for the three remaining London singles berths.

Il s'agit d'Amélie Mauresmo, qui cumulerait ces fonctions avec celle de capitaine de Coupe Davis. Un double rôle qui poserait problème si Lucas Pouille décidait de revenir sur sa décision de zapper la future compétition par équipes estampillée ITF. Mais à l'issue de la finale à Lille, le Français a bel et bien réitéré son intention de ne pas participer à cette épreuve.

Quant à Mauresmo, elle signera son retour sur le circuit début 2019, deux ans et demi après avoir mis un terme à sa collaboration avec Andy Murray (de juin 2014 à mai 2016). Reste à savoir comment le nouveau binôme fonctionnera car il paraît difficile d'imaginer l'ancienne n°1 mondiale consacrer une trentaine de semaines par an à son joueur alors qu'elle est mère de deux enfants en bas âge. Le suivi plus régulier sur les tournois pourrait donc être assuré par un deuxième entraîneur. Et se pose aussi la question du cumul des fonctions pour la nouvelle capitaine de Coupe Davis. Les cadres de la FFT seraient en train de sonder les meilleurs joueurs pour recueillir leur sentiment sur cette double casquette.

Lucas Pouille needed three hours and 43 minutes to battle past Alexei Popyrin 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-7(10), 4-6, 6-3 and book his place in the Australian Open fourth round for the first time.

It appeared as though the 24-year-old Frenchman would advance in straight sets, holding one match point at 6-6 (8/7) in the third set, but Pouille was unable to find the court as Popyrin charged forward and attacked his backhand, before reeling off the next two sets.

"It was not easy, especially [given] that I had a lot of chances in the third set to close it and I didn't make it. I think I can blame myself," said Pouille.

But Pouille rediscovered his best form in the decider, using his experience and playing with consistency from the baseline to extract a crucial forehand error from Popyrin, who was playing his first five-set match, in the sixth game. Serving for the match, the Frenchman then converted his second match point with a cross-court forehand; his 64th winner of the match.

Popyrin was bidding to become the eighth wild card to reach the Australian Open Round of 16 in the Open Era. The last wild card to reach the fourth round in Melbourne was Denis Istomin in 2017.

"It's always tricky to play an Australian in Melbourne," said Pouille. "It's only one month in the year for them to play here [in Australia], so they always play some unbelievable tennis.

"He has a huge serve and a huge forehand. He's going for it most of the time. It's not easy. You have to stay focused on every single point [and] try to make him play. I think he's playing some really great tennis. I'm sure he's going to break the Top 100, Top 50 very soon."

Pouille Books Raonic Quarter-final In Melbourne

Lucas Pouille recovered from a set down to reach his third Grand Slam quarter-final on Monday, beating Borna Coric 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(2) at the Australian Open.

The 28th seed, who also advanced to the last eight at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2016, landed 57 winners and won 66 per cent of second-serve return points (23/35) to advance after three hours and 15 minutes. Pouille becomes the 13th Frenchman to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals in the Open Era and the first since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2017.

With his 25th Grand Slam victory (25-19), Pouille improves to 4-7 against Top 20 opposition at Grand Slam events. The 24-year-old will look to add a fifth victory to that record when he meets 2016 semi-finalist Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals. Pouille is yet to win a set against Raonic in three FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings.

Last year, Pouille reached a career-high No. 10 in the ATP Rankings shortly after advancing to his third tour-level final in four weeks at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (l. to Bautista Agut) in February. But Pouille struggled for form throughout the remainder of the season, before taking the decision to hire Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach. Having now earned four consecutive tour-level victories for the first time since his appearance in Dubai last year, that decision could prove to be the catalyst for a rise up the ATP Rankings during the 2019 ATP Tour season.

After trading breaks in the opening four games of the match, both men held serve with relative ease to reach a first-set tie-break. From 4/4, Pouille clipped the tape on back-to-back points to hand Coric two set points, but the Croatian needed just one, sliding his ninth ace of the match out wide to take a one-set lead.

But Pouille earned the only break of the second set to level the match. The Frenchman ripped a forehand return winner to open the seventh game and charged to net to gain a 0/30 lead, before Coric gifted Pouille the break with his fourth double fault of the match and a misplaced forehand.

A second tie-break appeared likely with both players holding serve through the first 10 games of the third set, but Coric once again found himself 0/40 down on serve and, despite saving the first two break points, Coric could not stop Pouille from converting the third with a forehand winner.

Pouille rode the momentum with an immediate break of serve in the opening game of the fourth set, and, despite conceding his break advantage for 4-4, the Frenchman clinched the win on his first match point as Coric fired his 55th unforced error of the match.

Coric was bidding to become just the seventh Croatian to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final. Goran Ivanisevic, Goran Prpic, Ivan Ljubicic and Marin Cilic are the only to have achieved the feat at Melbourne Park.

Determined Pouille Fights Into Australian Open Semi-finals

Lucas Pouille, playing some of the best tennis of his career, booked a place in his first Grand Slam championship semi-final on Wednesday evening at the Australian Open.

The Frenchman’s decision to hire former WTA No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, a one-time coach to Andy Murray, is reaping dividends after a spell-binding performance on serve to knock out Canadian No. 16 seed Milos Raonic 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 in three hours and two minutes.

Pouille had never won a match at Melbourne Park and had made only one major championship quarter-final (2016 US Open) before this month. But on Friday, he'll face either World No. 1 and six-time former champion Novak Djokovic or eighth seed Kei Nishikori for a place in the final at Melbourne Park.

Few have surprised more this fortnight than the 24-year-old Frenchman, who cracked the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings last March, but ended the year outside the Top 30. He struggled with motivation and confidence, and began losing. Pouille made three finals — the Open Sud de France, the Open 13 Provence and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships — last February, but advanced to only one semi-final for the remainder of the year.

“I didn't really enjoy my time on court. You lose one match, two match, then it's tough for you to come back,” he said.

He split with long-time coach Emmanuel Planque, who had been in his corner when Pouille knocked out Rafael Nadal at the 2016 US Open to make the quarter-finals. Last month, Pouille started working with Mauresmo, a two-time Grand Slam champion.

Credit Mauresmo, a fresh start in Australia or a new attitude from Pouille, but whatever combination has spurred his change, it's working. On Wednesday, Pouille lost just 13 of his first-service points, withstood 25 aces from Raonic, and hit three more winners than the World No. 17 (62 to 59).

Pouille fell behind a break early against Raonic, but found ways inside the service games of the Canadian, who had powered through one of the toughest paths to the quarter-finals, beating Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Alexander Zverev.

Pouille was hitting winners off of Raonic's serves, and when he didn't, he often turned the match into a baseline affair, with Raonic craving a chance to come forward, but Pouille playing the aggressor from inside the baseline.

The Frenchman took the opening tie-break, and behind a break of serve, ran away with the second. Raonic had come back from two-sets down once before, and he saved four break points in the third set to stay in it. In the tie-break, the Canadian locked in and won the first six points.

With just one break point on Raonic’s serve at 0/1, 30/40 in the fourth set, it looked destined for a tie-break. But Pouille grit his teeth in the 10th game to clinch his third match point chance, courtesy of a backhand error from Raonic, to complete his fifth tour-level victory in a row.

Raonic, who also lost in the Australian Open quarter-finals in 2015 (l. to Djokovic) and 2017 (l. to Nadal), had previously beaten Pouille on three occasions.
