Pouille Sets Third-Round Date With Federer: "It's A Dream"

Lucas Pouille is making his Masters 1000 debut.

Frenchman Lucas Pouille didn’t even expect to play at the BNP Paribas Masters. But he changed his schedule at the last minute and now has a third-round date with his idol, Roger Federer, in his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.

“I'm very happy that I'm playing well here in Paris, that I qualified, that I passed two rounds, and that I'm playing against Roger,” said the 20-year-old Parisian. “It's a dream. It couldn't be better.”

Pouille enjoyed a one-hour hit with Federer in Australia this past January, and expressed he liked “everything” about his game as he anticipated what he’d have to do against the 33-year-old Swiss.

“He serves extremely well,” he said. “He's one of the best servers in the world. He doesn't serve maybe harder, but he mixes it up a lot and he's very precise. It's very difficult to read his serve because he has the same toss all the time. So tomorrow it's going to be very important for me to return well. I shouldn't give any free points on my returns. And then his forehand, well... Or his volley or everything. Everything.”

Federer also complimented Pouille's strengths, as he looked forward to their meeting. “He has a beautiful technique, like all French players,” he said. “He knows how to do everything. He knows how to serve. He knows how to go to the net. There is a good tennis school here in France, and you can see it in his game, too.”

Prior to this week, the 176th-ranked Pouille had played in seven tour-level events and had one match win to his name: a victory over a No. 171-ranked Alex Kuznetsov last year at Roland Garros. To qualify for the BNP Paribas Masters, he needed to get past Top 100 players Steve Johnson and Jarkko Nieminen. He then followed with a straight-sets win over World No. 27 Ivo Karlovic, limiting the 6’11” Croatian to five aces, and today edged No. 20 Fabio Fognini in two tie-breaks.

“I'm not surprised, because I have been playing well lately,” he said. “I was frustrated I was losing those matches because I knew I was playing well, so I was very eager to play well…

“I'm very consistent. I don't give away many points, but I don't do only winners. It's not that I'm playing incredible here. I'm just solid. I'm moving well. I'm confident now. So on the important points I'm able to serve well, to return well, and I go forward. Winning this first and second match made me very confident. I think the two tie-breakers were very important today. When I was down 5-2 and came back it was important, too.”

Despite his breakthrough, Pouille remained grounded and realistic about what he’d need to do to continue his progress.

“I'm a Top 170 player. There is no reason for me to think I'm great,” he said. “It would be anyway very bad for me to think that. When the tournament is over I will have to go back to work. I'm not going to play tournaments like this one only. I need to go and play Challengers again. I need to improve a lot still.”

Auckland: pierwszy półfinał na szczeblu ATP

Francuski 20-latek skutecznie skorzystał z szansy, jaka pojawiła się po wycofaniu się z turnieju w Auckland Tommy'ego Robredo. Pouille, występujący jako ''lucky loser'' (nie przeszedł w Nowej Zelandii kwalifikacji), pokonał Michaela Venusa i Alberta Ramosa, by w meczu o finał ulec po wyrównanym, trzysetowym spotkaniu rodakowi, Adrianowi Mannarino.
