Coric Upsets Gasquet In Dubai

Croatian sets up second-round meeting with Paire
Borna Coric began his Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships campaign in style on Tuesday, beating fifth seed Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3.

The World No. 50 began both sets in top form and, despite dropping serve late in each set, re-established control quickly each time to secure the straight-set win in 76 minutes.

”He did come back in the both sets,” said Coric. “It was a pretty good effort from him... but I managed to stay calm. I didn't panic. It was good.”

Coric will meet another Frenchman for a place in the quarter-finals, after Benoit Paire’s three-set win over Yoshihito Nishioka on Monday. Coric leads their FedEx ATPHead2Head series 1-0.

The 2015 semi-finalist (l. to Federer) hit six aces and broke the Frenchman’s serve on four occasions to move into the last 16. "I think I was returning pretty good today,” reflected Coric. “I was happy with my return. I think it got me through the match also. I was not serving very well. I was not happy with my serve. I need to go and practise some serves now. Otherwise... it was good performance.”

Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff also advanced to the second round, needing just 56 minutes to dispatch of Andreas Haider-Maurer 62, 6-4. Struff hit 13 aces and dropped just two points behind his first serve in a dominant serving performance.

Fritz will next face the player who has lost the fewest games of anyone in the top half of the draw — 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier Borna Coric. For the second match in a row, the Croatian steamrolled a seeded Spaniard by defeating last week's Dubai winner Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1, 6-3 in one hour, 22 minutes. The 21-year-old has lost just nine games in the tournament.

"Since the first match I was playing very good and then gradually I started playing even better and better," Coric said. "Today until 6-1, 3-0 I was playing maybe the best tennis of my life probably. I was just playing very aggressive, I was making constant pressure on him. But at the same time, I was not making mistakes."

Coric's Resurgence: "There Is No Magic Light"

As a former junior World No. 1 and going on to stand on the cusp of the Top 30 at age 18, the hype surrounding Borna Coric is to be expected. That career-high in the ATP Rankings, though, was July 2015.

His transition since, has hit more than its share of hurdles. But a complete change-up in his team and a realigned attitude to improvement has the 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier making inroads once more.

In six sets played in the desert at the BNP Paribas Open, the Croatian has dropped just nine games, fewer than any player in the top half of the draw. For the second match in succession the 21-year-old trounced a seeded Spaniard – this time last week’s winner in Dubai, Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-1, 6-3.

“I was playing even better and better and today until 6-1, 3-0 - I was playing maybe the best tennis of my life,” Coric admitted. “I was just playing very aggressively, putting constant pressure on him, but at the same time I wasn’t making mistakes.”

That change in team involved a complete overall with the experienced Riccardo Piatti joining Kristijan Schneider as his new coaches, Roger Federer’s coach Ivan Ljubicic coming into the fold as manager.

“I felt like I needed a change,” Coric said. “Some kind of different, not only coach, but manager, the fitness coach, the physio. I spoke a lot to Ivan and to Riccardo before we started working. We had a great off-season. We had a great few weeks after Australia.

“Again, I need to improve. I have time. Kristijan is like a second coach. I look at it as a team. No one is head coach… If we have a big decision to make we always talk all together. We see who has better ideas.

“Ivan kind of watches everything from a different angle and from time to time gives a different opinion and checks I’m on the right path. We see each other very often when I’m in Monte Carlo.”

While the changes appear to be reaping rewards in the Californian desert, Coric is staying grounded. He is all too aware, one flash-in-the-pan result does not constitute a long-term breakthrough.

“There is no magic light. OK, I’m playing well here but it doesn’t mean I’m going to be Top 10 in a few months,” he said. “We need to work in three, four years to become a Top 10 tennis player, that’s my goal.

“I had very big success when I was very young. Also that time I was No. 33 [in the ATP Rankings] but my game level was not there. If I see myself now to when I was 18 – when I was No.33 – you cannot compare the two players. I’m a much better player now.”

Borna Coric joined Chung in the last eight as he battled past Next Gen American Taylor Fritz 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4 in two hours and 12 minutes.

Coric had lost only nine games in surging through to the R16 and looked set for another dominant display as he raced to secure the first set 6-2 against Fritz. But the 20-year-old American stood his ground in the second set. He failed to serve out the set when he had the opportunity at 5-4, but then held his nerve to save match point at 5/6 in the tie-break before levelling up on Stadium 1 with a roar.

Fritz carried his momentum into the decider with a break in the first game, but Coric, now working with Riccardo Piatti and Kristijan Schneider, clawed his way back to level in the fourth game. He then saved a crucial break point in the ninth game before breaking Fritz to clinch the match in the following game, converting his fourth match point overall.

Coric will look to reach his first Masters 1000 semi-final when he faces either Pablo Carreno Busta or Kevin Anderson in Indian Wells.

"That was just a really tough one," said Fritz. "It obviously sucks to compete so hard and come back the way I did in the second-set tie-break and saved the match points just to double fault it away.

"It sucks, and it's probably the biggest match I have played in my career as far as making a quarterfinals of a Masters, points, and all that. It's really tough to lose that match.

"It stings a lot, but you do have to take away positives," added Fritz. "I made the round of 16 for the first time, and I think I'm playing very good tennis.

"This year for me has been very consistent. I have had a lot of strong results. And I'm off to a really good start for the year, and I think I can build on this and make this more of a regular thing."

Resilient Coric Comes Through In The Clutch Again

Borna Coric was down and it looked as if he'd soon be out. The 21-year-old Croatian, who had never beaten Kevin Anderson before Thursday, double faulted to lose his serve and go down 2-4 in the third set of their BNP Paribas Open quarter-final.

Until that point, Anderson had been broken only two times in the tournament, and two more holds would have him in his maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final.

But Coric remained solid and immediately broke back, and in the third set tie-break, the rising star kept up a trend that has propelled him to his first Masters 1000 semi-final this week in Indian Wells. Coric won his second third-set tie-break of the tournament to advance 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(3). The right-hander has now won 11 of his past 12 deciding-set tie-breaks.

“I didn't start very well. He was hitting the ball very big, and I just couldn't find my rhythm on the ball,” Coric said. “I started going more for the serve. And then I broke him earlier in the second set, which was really helpful. In the third, again, I knew it's one break, it's two or three points that are going to decide, and that's what happened.”

In the semi-final, he will next meet top seed and unbeaten Roger Federer or 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals Hyeon Chung in a rematch of their Australian Open semi-final, in which Chung had to retire in the second set because of blisters. “Chung is in fantastic form. Roger, I don't have to say anything. You know, we all know him,” Coric said. “I'm going to try to look at the match a little bit, have a nice steak.”


All signs pointed to Anderson clinching his spot in the last four of the BNP Paribas Open. The right-hander, No. 9 in the ATP Rankings, had beaten Coric in all three of their FedEx ATP Head2Head matchups, and coming into the quarter-final, Anderson had won 97 per cent of his service games in Indian Wells (38/39).

But Coric, who changed his entire team last year and is now working with Riccardo Piatti and Kristijan Schneider, played confidently and never sulked against the big-serving South African. After losing the first set in only 31 minutes, Coric broke to start the second set and fought off the only break point he faced in the set.

The third set was back and forth before Anderson lifted another forehand long on match point, and Coric crouched near the ground and screamed at his box in jubilation. Anderson, meanwhile, fell to 0-9 in Masters 1000 quarter-finals.

It's helpful to have goals, the right goals, that is. The past two seasons, Borna Coric has followed the much-discussed goal-setting process. He's written them down, focused on them throughout the year and, at the end of the season, tracked how close he came to achieving them.

But Coric, who beat Kevin Anderson on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, wasn't hitting his marks. For instance, he wanted to climb inside the Top 20 of the ATP Rankings. But to this day, his career-high is No. 33, which he last reached two and a half years ago, on 14 September 2015.

“Setting goals is always good. But I didn't have maybe the right goals. If I want to be Top 20 player I need to work on things I need to improve. I cannot just become Top 20 by nothing, just because I want to be Top 20,” Coric told ATPWorldTour.com.

So this year, Coric scratched the whole idea. No more goals, and especially no more goals about ATP Rankings. This year, he decided, he would focus on only one thing: Improving his game.

“I'm going to work on my game and we'll see where it's going to get me,” Coric said.

So far, it's gotten him to a place he had never been before in his career. The 21-year-old Croatian came back from a break down in the third set against the 6'6” Anderson, who had been broken only once during his first three matches in Indian Wells (38/39), to advance to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).

Coric's improved even-keel mindset, developed with his new coaching team of Riccardo Piatti and Kristijan Schneider, also helped the 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals semi-finalist make the last four in the Coachella Valley. After Anderson sprinted through the first set, Coric didn't beat himself up, as he might have in the past. Instead, he broke Anderson to start the second.

“I just was looking at some of my matches, and I was talking with Riccardo and talking with my team, and, also they told me, 'You can't have those ups and downs. It's not helpful for your tennis, not good for you',” Coric said.

“I just decided, OK, I need to accept some things. Like in the first set, I need to accept that I'm not playing well. He played well... It's that mixture. And again, I need to believe that still I can win, and that's what I did today.

“I'm much calmer on the court definitely now. I don't get so excited. I don't get so down. I don't have these big [ups and downs]... I think that's good. Because if I go too much up, again, it's not good. If I go too down, it's not good. I'm trying to be somewhere in between all the time.”

For the first time in a while, Coric has had the same voices in his box for an extended period of time. Thirteen months ago, the Croatian was starting a new partnership with Ivica Ancic after splitting with Miles Maclagan in 2016.

But Coric, who had also worked with Zeljko Krajan and Thomas Johansson, sounds pleased to have found the right scenario with Piatti, who won't travel to every event; Schneider, who will travel to most tournaments; and countryman Ivan Ljubicic as his manager.

“It was not beneficial. I cannot say it affected me. I cannot blame anyone else for my bad results. But for sure it's not beneficial,” Coric said of frequently changing coaches. “Obviously if you're working with someone for six months in one way, trying to build up your game in that way, and then someone else comes and tries to tell you something completely different, so you need to change again just to build up... It's not easy.”

This week in California, Coric has made it all look easy. The 6'1” right-hander raced through his first three matches, losing only eight games in his first six sets against Donald Young, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships titlist Roberto Bautista Agut and Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay. Coric ended the run of home favourite and #NextGenATP American Taylor Fritz in another third-set tie-break to reach the quarter-finals.

The Croatian prefers playing under the spotlight and the attention that comes from winning at Masters 1000 events. In 2016, at 19 years, 9 months, he became the youngest Masters 1000 quarter-finalist since Novak Djokovic in 2006. Now he's two wins away from becoming the first player outside of the “Big Four” – Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray – to win the BNP Paribas Open title since Ljubicic in 2010.

“I love the big stage,” Coric said. “I love all the buzz. When these kinds of matches are [happening], I love it. I love it.”

W tegorocznym turnieju rozgrywanym w Kalifornii Roger Federer miał mecze lepsze i gorsze, ale dopiero w półfinale znalazł się śmiałek, który zabrał mu seta i realnie zagroził. Borna Corić rozpoczął sobotni pojedynek dosyć spokojnie. Przy serwisie utytułowanego Szwajcara miał problemy z wygrywaniem punktów. Z drugiej strony sam podawał znakomicie i bardzo dobrze poruszał się po korcie. Chorwat posyłał wiele świetnych piłek po krosie, czym sprawiał spore problemy przeciwnikowi.

Przy stanie po 5 Corić zdobył przełamanie kapitalnym minięciem, a potem pewnie zwieńczył premierową odsłonę. Doskonale wykorzystał moment słabości Federera i kilka podarowanych przez niego piłek. Tenisista z Bazylei miał w sobotę aż 37 pomyłek oraz 28 wygrywających uderzeń. Z kolei 49. singlista świata także popełnił sporo błędów, szczególnie z forhendu, który w kluczowych momentach nie był jego mocną stroną.

Chorwat rozpoczął drugiego seta od przełamania, a zaalarmowany Szwajcar rzucił się w pogoń za rywalem. Publiczność przecierała oczy ze zdziwienia, gdy Federer marnował break pointy w czwartym i szóstym gemie. Corić prowadził 4:2. Od zwycięstwa dzieliły go tylko dwa gemy, ale wystarczyła chwila dekoncentracji, aby 20-krotny mistrz wielkoszlemowy powrócił do gry i wygrał cztery gemy z rzędu.

W trzecim secie powtórzyła się historia z drugiej części spotkania. Panowie rozgrywali wiele intensywnych wymian, których skutkiem były piękne wygrywające zagrania lub proste błędy. Chorwat dwukrotnie prowadził z przewagą przełamania i za każdym razem ją tracił. Znów był dwa gemy od wielkiego triumfu nad najlepszym tenisistą świata, ale po podwójnym błędzie oddał podanie. Od stanu po 4 nie zdobył już żadnego punktu i przegrał ostatecznie po znakomitym boju 7:5, 4:6, 4:6.

Federer zwyciężył Coricia po raz drugi w głównym cyklu. W 2015 roku nie dał Chorwatowi żadnych szans w Dubaju, ale w sobotę na kortach twardych w Indian Wells musiał się sporo napracować. Szwajcar powalczy w niedzielę o rekordowe szóste trofeum w zawodach BNP Paribas Open i zarazem 28. w imprezie rangi ATP Masters 1000. Przeciwnikiem broniącego tytułu lidera rankingu ATP będzie Argentyńczyk Juan Martin del Potro, który w sobotę pokonał Kanadyjczyka Milosa Raonicia 6:2, 6:3.

Coric: "I Was Pushing Him To The Limits"

Most players would be down on themselves after surrendering multiple leads to Roger Federer in the semi-finals of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event.

But Borna Coric isn’t most players.

The 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals semi-finalist burst onto the scene early in his young career, defeating the likes of Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray as a teenager and claiming his maiden ATP World Tour title last year in Marrakech at the age of 20. He showed his promise to a packed Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday in his maiden Masters 1000 semi-final, pushing Federer to the brink — leading by a set and 4-2, and then later a break on two separate occasions in the third set — before falling in three tight sets.

Coric might have lost, but he’s not getting down on himself.

“I was really surprised how well I played, how much pressure I was putting on him, and I was also enjoying it. We were pushing -- I think I was pushing him to the limits. He pushed me to the limits, for sure,” said the Croatian, with a smile.

“I need to look at it from the positive side definitely, just the whole tournament, and this match, as well. I played a great match. I was very close. I just didn't take all the chances."

After the match, Federer was complimentary of the 21-year-old.

"I think he played a great tournament, beat some great players early in the tournament easily, and that's going to give him a world of confidence. Then he won the close ones except this one today. But okay. That's okay. I think he can take a lot out of this match and also the whole week and move forward from here," said the Swiss.

Coric returned the favour in his press conference, citing the challenges of playing Federer.

“Everything. You don't know what to expect,” said Coric. “You don't know what's he's going to play next, what spin, which angle, pretty much everything, really. It's completely different level.

“But again, today, I was really, really playing really good, I was aggressive and I was pushing him to the limits, but at the end he was better player.”

Coric, who is now 11-4 in 2018, heads to Miami for the second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season. He leaves the Coachella Valley having earned 360 ATP Ranking points and $327,965 in prize money thanks to his efforts in Indian Wells.

He also brings the momentum of a breakthrough week.

“I think the momentum is up, definitely. Hopefully I can stay healthy, and I can continue to play like that. You know, how I'm going to play in Miami or Monte-Carlo, I don't know, but I'm going to give my best, for sure,” said the World No. 49, who will rise back into the Top 40 in the ATP Rankings, nearing his career-high of No. 33 from 2015.

“I'm going to try to do the same things, try to focus on myself and just see what's going to happen.”
