#NextGenATP Coric Shocks World No. 1 Murray

#NextGenATP Croatian Borna Coric is a lucky loser in the main draw at the Mutua Madrid Open, but showed plenty of skill in shocking World No. 1 Andy Murray 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

“After losing in qualies and I was booking my flight back home, this is a surprise, for sure,” said Coric. “But in the last two matches, I've been feeling like I was back in Marrakech and played really good today. It’s a huge win and is going to mean a lot for me because confidence plays a huge role in my tennis.”

Coric, who moved into the main draw after Richard Gasquet withdrew due to back pain, took advantage of his second chance this week by defeating Mischa Zverev and qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert before the win over Murray. He becomes the first lucky loser to reach the quarter-finals in Madrid's 16-year tournament history.

“Obviously he didn't play very good today. That was obvious. That’s when I said I'm going to make even more balls, make him play and see what happens,” said Coric. “I didn’t do anything special with my tactics. I was trying to be very boring, just stay with him and try to get some errors from him.”

Coric will next play eighth seed Dominic Thiem, who saved five match points in a thrilling 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(9) victory over Grigor Dimitrov. Thiem rallied from 2-4 in the final set and 3/6 in the tie-break, also saving match points at 6/7 and 8/9 before converting on his second match point to advance in two hours and 34 minutes.

The Croatian won his lone FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting with Thiem this March at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Miami.

Coric Claims #NextGenATP Battle Over Zverev

The #NextGenATP bragging rights belong to Borna Coric after the Croat’s upset of No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday. In the battle of the 20-year-old former junior rivals, Coric retained his unbeaten record against the German with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(1), 7-6(4) upset on Grandstand.
“Of course I needed it … I had a rough few months,” Coric said. “I was struggling with my neck injury. I was not really sure what it is. I didn't play ... So it does mean a lot definitely. It's going to give me some extra confidence. But at the end of the day, it's only a tennis match. [In a] day and a half I have another one. We will see.”
Coric had beaten Zverev as 16 year olds in the 2013 US Open boys’ singles semi-finals and as 18 year olds at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati in 2015. Coming into Wednesday’s match, Zverev was sitting at a career-high No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, having claimed his fifth title of the season at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal. Coric was ranked No. 61, having claimed his first ATP World Tour title earlier in the season in Marrakech.

“I mean, it's that NextGen thing the ATP is promoting, also what we are promoting,” Coric said. “I think it's actually quite cool. I think it does help us, as well, to put us on the map.
“I don't see it as a big rivalry. I think we all have our paths, our careers. We need to go in our way. I'm trying not to look at the other guys. Trying to look at myself, to improve my game, to improve my tennis.”
After dropping serve at 2-3 in the opening set, the Croat landed his first break of the match with Zverev serving to stay in the second set at 5-6. With the contest locked up at a set apiece, neither player would be broken again.
Staring down triple set point on serve at 5-6 in the fourth set, Coric remained composed to reel off five straight points and force the fourth-set tie-break. It left the German having converted just one of 11 break-point opportunities.
In the tie-break it was Zverev who looked the tighter of the pair. He threw his arms up in despair when Coric rifled a forehand pass for 5/2. The Croat brought up two match points with a huge serve drawing the smash and he took it when Zverev sailed one final forehand long.

It throws the bottom half of the draw even wider open with No.5 seed Marin Cilic, the highest remaining seed after just the second round. Coric will face South African 28th seed Kevin Anderson for a place in the fourth round. In a clash of former Top 10 opponents, Anderson handed Latvian Ernests Gulbis an unwanted 29th birthday present when he posted a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
It was a draw the fourth-seeded Zverev was all too aware of, an opportunity he was left to rue. His quest to progress beyond the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time continues.
“It's upsetting because the draw is pretty open in the bottom part,” Zverev said. “I felt like I should have been favoured there. You know, I just played a very, very bad match, so it's unfortunate. But that's how it is.”
John Isner is through to his ninth straight US Open third round, with the big-serving American coasting past #NextGenATP South Korean Hyeon Chung on Wednesday. The No. 10 seed moved through with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 result to improve his unbeaten run in second-round matches at Flushing Meadows to 10-0.
Chung had arrived in New York City at a career-high No. 47 in the Emirates ATP Rankings but was no match for his opponent’s 30 aces. Isner is 14-3 since Wimbledon, with title runs in Newport and Atlanta as well as a semi-final finish at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. He will face 23rd seed Mischa Zverev after the German’s 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(3), 7-5 victory over Frenchman Benoit Paire. It was Zverev's second straight five-set triumph, having beaten American Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in the opening round.
Isner’s compatriot Sam Querrey also advanced to the third round. The 17th seed easily accounted for Israel’s Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. “Everything felt great today,” Querrey said. “I mean, Dudi is a tricky player. He's got a fan club behind him. They're loud, they're cheering on their guy. “I felt like I did a good job of just putting pressure on him, staying in front, coming to the net, serving big. I feel like when I do that against anyone, I'm pretty tricky.”

Q. How badly did you need this win, given the struggles you've had?
BORNA CORIC: I mean, of course I needed it. You know, it's not a matter, I wouldn't die if I lost most probably. But, of course, I mean, it's like any other match. I want to win every match. That's my goal.
I just went out there, I was fighting. I gave my best. I gave my all. I left it all on the court. Yeah, it was very good day.
Q. What was it that worked?
BORNA CORIC: I think we are playing quite similar tennis pretty much, only he's serving a little bit bigger than me. So, I mean, I don't know. In the first set, I lost that break, which I played a really, really bad game. That was enough for him to just manage and to hold his serve because I could not get any returns in the court.
In second set, I thought I started to play better and I started to serve much better. I was hitting the spots very good. Then I think I was little bit lucky on 6-5, 40-Love down. I think also he got little bit maybe sloppy. He also thought maybe the game is already over.
Then last two sets, I mean, we were holding serves. In the important points, I was serving very good. I played some big points on three set points down. That's it.
Q. How much did this mean to you, just also because you looked very satisfied, very happy, exhilarated at the end of the match.
BORNA CORIC: Yeah, like I also said, I had a rough few months. I was struggling with my neck injury. I was not really sure what it is. I didn't play. I didn't know for how long I'm going to play. Actually when I was going to the Montreal, I wanted to also cancel it. But I went there and the physios helped me a lot.
So, yeah, then it's pretty much good. So it does mean a lot definitely. It's going to give me some extra confidence. But in the end of the day, it's only tennis match. For day and a half I have another one. We will see.
Q. Do you see him as a particular rival? You've had some history with him. In general, with the under 21 guys, do you see this as a separate rivalry off the main tour?
BORNA CORIC: Yeah, I mean, definitely he had unbelievable year so far. He's, what, No. 6 or 7 in the world. So definitely he had really good year. With all the other guys, we were all about 30, 40, 50, 60. I'm not sure, to be honest.
I mean, it's that NextGen thing, you know, what ATP is promoting, also what we are promoting. I think it's actually quite cool. I think it does help us, as well, to put us on the map.
I mean, I don't know. I don't see it as a big rivalry. I think we all have our paths, our careers. We need to go in our way. I'm trying not to look at the other guys. Trying to look at myself, to improve my game, to improve my tennis.
Q. Sascha was one of the favorites to get to the final in the bottom half of the draw. Now you've beaten him. Are you actually thinking about where you can go in this tournament?
BORNA CORIC: No, not really. I mean, I had some good wins this year, then I lost. I had some bad losses, as well. So I need to go match by match. Next match I think is Kevin Anderson, right? I lost to him twice, I think. So it's going to be extremely tough match.
Like I said, I lost to him twice. I need to recover, as well. It was long match. It was really physically also very demanding. So, no, I'm not looking to the semifinals, not even close to that.

Donaldson, Coric Clinch Next Gen ATP Finals Berths

Two spots remain at inaugural tournament
The field for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals is nearly complete. American Jared Donaldson and Borna Coric of Croatia on Tuesday became the fifth and sixth players, respectively, to qualify for the 21-and-under tournament, to be held 7-11 November in Milan. Donaldson and Coric joined the following players who had already qualified for the eight-player tournament: German Alexander Zverev; Russians Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov; and Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Both Donaldson and Coric were guaranteed their places in Milan when #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe fell to top seed Roger Federer at the Swiss Indoors Basel.

Consistency has landed Donaldson among the world's best 21-and-under players this year. The 6'2” right-hander had shown bursts of talent in prior seasons, including a pair of third-round runs in 2016, at the US Open and at the Rogers Cup, the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Toronto.
But this year, he has posted positive results all season. Donaldson made the fourth round at the Miami Open presented by Itau. He later advanced to the third round at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., and at the Coupe Rogers, another Masters 1000 event, in Montreal.

His best finishes, however, have come during the past two months. Donaldson reached the quarter-finals at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and repeated that performance by making the last eight at the Chengdu Open in China.

Coric has earned some of his career-best wins during the 2017 season, his third on tour. The 6'1” right-hander captured his maiden ATP World Tour title in April, saving five championship points to beat German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech. Coric had fallen in the 2016 Aircel Chennai Open final to Swiss Stan Wawrinka.
At the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open, a Masters 1000 tournament, Coric celebrated the biggest win of his career by knocking off then-World No. 1 Andy Murray on clay. Coric went on to advance to his second Masters 1000 quarter-final (l. to Thiem).

But the Croatian's success wasn't limited to the red dirt. On the hard courts in Miami, he upset then-World No. 8 Thiem to reach the third round of the Masters 1000 event. And at the season's final Grand Slam in New York, Coric stunned #NextGenATP peer Zverev in the second round of the US Open.
Two spots remain at the Next Gen ATP Finals. The top seven in the Emirates ATP Race To Milan qualify; the eighth place at the tournament will be given to the winner of an Italian 21-and-under tournament to be finished on 5 November.
South Korean Hyeon Chung, who faces David Goffin of Belgium in the second round at the Swiss Indoors Basel, currently holds the seventh and final qualification spot. Russian Daniil Medvedev is 33 points behind Chung in the Race standings. Medvedev is the top seed at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Brest, France, and has to win the title to have a chance to overtake Chung.

Coric Survives Battle, Ousts Carreno Busta

Pablo Carreno Busta finished 2017 on a high, playing two matches in the Nitto ATP Finals as an alternate. And the Spaniard appeared he would begin the new ATP World Tour campaign strongly as well Tuesday. He twice served for his season-opening match against Borna Coric at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in the third set, before holding three match points in the eventual tie-break.

But Coric had the courage to step into the court in the big moments and seize the victory from second seed Carreno Busta, surviving the two-hour 41-minute battle 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(8). How did he manage to find his way past the No. 10 player in the ATP Rankings?

“To be honest I don’t know,” Coric said. “It was such a tough match. I think he was serving two times for the match and I was just thinking to myself [that] I was playing good for the whole match and that was my main focus.”

While Coric faced match points at 5/6, 6/7 and 7/8, in the third-set tie-break, he took full advantage of his first opportunity, whipping a forehand approach shot that Carreno Busta could not handle. That shot clinched his fourth Top 10 win since March 2017.

“I think it’s actually quite normal to play better when you’re playing against better players,” Coric said.

That was not the only match to go to a third-set tie-break in Doha on Tuesday, as eighth-seeded Feliciano Lopez snuck past fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(3) to set up a second-round meeting against qualifier Mirza Basic.

Lopez’s victory was not quite as up-and-down as Coric’s. While the left-hander did have a match point on his opponent’s serve at 5-4 in the third set, he cruised through the tie-break, taking advantage of his second opportunity to clinch the battle.

And if that third-set tie-break was not enough, there was a third in Doha. Jan-Lennard Struff earned the fifth Top 20 win of his career by defeating third seed Tomas Berdych 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in two hours, eight minutes.

Berdych, who had not played since October due to a back injury, won nine more points than Struff in the match. But it was the German who played the more courageous tennis in the end, converting on his second match point.

Sixth-seeded Filip Krajinovic, who made waves by advancing to the Rolex Paris Masters final as a qualifier, also was upset. Peter Gojowczyk, the 2017 Moselle Open champion, broke five times to beat the Serbian 6-4, 6-1 in 66 minutes.

The 2005 Davis Cup winner, Croatia, secured a home quarter-final meeting against Kazakhstan after Borna Coric defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in Osijek, Croatia, to clinch a 3-1 victory for his country in its opening-round tie against Canada.

The 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals semi-finalist looked confident on serve throughout the match, winning 78 per cent of points behind his first delivery and holding all 15 of his service games while facing just one break point. Coric was delighted to win against a tough opponent — Shapovalov also qualified for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals — in front of his home crowd.

“It's the most unbelievable feeling in the world,” Coric told DavisCup.com. “I was playing well for the whole match. Maybe there were some nerves, but as soon as I broke him in the first game, I felt good.”
