First-Time Winner: Edmund Opens Up About What First Title Means To Him

Kyle Edmund checked off another career accomplishment on Sunday in what's been his finest season on the ATP World Tour. The 23-year-old Brit beat France's Gael Monfils to win his maiden ATP World Tour title at the European Open in Antwerp. Edmund spoke with ATPWorldTour.com about the milestone:

How does it feel to be holding this trophy?
It's a really nice feeling to get the win today. Looking at the overall picture, just lots of years of hard work and building up to this, to win a title on the professional level, on the ATP World Tour.

To finally do that is a really great feeling, something you always remember, looking back and winning your first title. So right now in the moment, it's hard to just take it all in but over time it will give me a lot of confidence and belief.

Was this a goal you had as a junior growing up, to win an ATP World Tour title?
Yeah, it's always a goal, even when you're a youngster. But it's just a dream at that point, and over the years, it's building to make that into a reality, and you gain belief at different events and throughout the years, you have certain wins that give you belief and confidence that you can do it.

I've known for a while that my game is good enough to win a title. But it's about doing it, producing... and I'm happy that's happened today.

How did you prepare for this final differently with your first final (l. to Andujar, Marrakech 2018) in mind?
I think that just helped me to learn from the environment and the feeling of being in a final. He beat me quite comfortably there. I knew it couldn't go any worse, and it was not a great feeling to lose in the final comfortably.

That helps you for the next one, spurs you on and makes you even more determined to get it. So after going down in the first set (vs. Monfils), it was just about really about being determined and fighting to get the win. I knew the win wasn't going to come easy after that; I knew if I was going to win it, I would really have to work for it.

You beat two former Top 10 players in the last two rounds in Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils. What did you do well to beat both players?
They're both different matches. The Gasquet one, I felt in control from the start of the match and served very well. It was more straightforward but still a tough match.

But I think today at the start, [Monfils] came out firing a lot quicker than I did, which made it harder to turn around. But both obviously French players, and they're very skillful and tough to beat, which most French players are, so you always know that, and it was no difference in my thoughts.

I was very happy to come through that in the semi-finals and the final, where the matches count the most and matter the most. To get over the line and win the title is a great feeling.

After the first-round loss at the US Open, you reached Beijing semi-finals, Shanghai quarter-finals. Would you consider this the best stretch of your season after your Australian Open semi-final run, or would you say it's better than that?
As a stretch of tournaments, it's been my most consistent for sure. There have been reasons why I've struggled after the Australian Open, just with physical concerns or issues basically. So it was always trying to get better from there and learning not to get physically down again.

As a stretch, this has been my best. I've had some good wins, some good tournaments.

ATP title. Grand Slam SF. British No. 1. At the end of the year, how's that going to make you remember 2018?
It's been my best year so far. I've done things that I've done for the first time, as in British No. 1, semi-finals at a Grand Slam, winning my first tour-level event. So that's been really good for me to do that and then obviously the goal is to always improve on that. But you have to get going, you can't just sprint straight away and expect these things to happen.

You have to almost get your first out of the way, and do it, rather than just thinking it will happen. So now that I've done a few of them I'm very pleased, and I think it's going to help me in the future.

Now that you have the first title, what are your next goals?
It was always a big goal of mine to get the title... For sure, I'm close to the Top 10, so I know the goal is definitely Top 10. That's a strong, tough goal. Top 10 just doesn't happen overnight. You have to be consistent with your results, and that's something I'm working towards... and of course winning more titles... and by doing this one I think that will help me massively.

You've done well on clay, hard. What would you say is your favourite surface now?
It's a really tough one to say. I like playing on clay. As a junior I played on it a bit more than hard. With the ATP circuit you naturally get used to playing on hard and improve on hard because it's probably 70 per cent of the year is played on hard courts... I enjoy playing on both (clay and hard). I've had my best results on hard, but for sure I like playing on clay.

Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge who has helped you get to where you are in your career this year but also just generally speaking?
There are always lots of people who have helped over the years, even when I was 14, 15, at certain academies, who have sacrificed their time to help me, and it has improved me at that stage of my career.

For sure, my two coaches and my fitness trainer, they've been there the majority of the weeks so they've helped me a lot. Probably the most important would be your family because they have always been there and they always support you no matter what, with mum and dad and sister.

There were times when I was 10, 11 years old where we would go for tennis sessions at 6:30 in the morning until 8, which meant getting up at like 5:30, and my mum would do that, take me to the courts. There's lots of sacrifice that goes in and for sure, they'll be very happy with my win today.

After the season, what will you do that you maybe haven't had time to do lately?
For sure, I'll go on holiday. I'll do that for a little bit, just mentally it's nice to get a break. Of course you need a physical break... But mentally it's important, I feel for such a long year that we have as tennis players, to just get away from the courts and mentally get away from it.

I always have sport interests. Last year I think I did go to a Liverpool game so I might try that. I know I'm going to go to England vs. New Zealand for rugby. I've played rugby in school and watched it on TV but I've never actually been to an international test match in rugby so I'm pretty pumped to watch that. And apart from that there have been no plans. I try not to make plans in my off-season because generally you just want to chill out. But for sure I'll go for a holiday.

Edmund Keeps Rolling As Kukushkin Stuns Dimitrov

Dimitrov, Fognini suffer early losses in Austrian capital

European Open champion Kyle Edmund continued his recent run of form on Wednesday, beating Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 7-6(3) at the Erste Bank Open 500.

Eighth-seeded Edmund hit 11 aces and lost just five of his first-service points (40/45) to advance after 81 minutes. Schwartman was aiming to continue his own good play after reaching the semi-finals in Antwerp, but was unable to match his 2017 quarter-final showing in the Austrian capital.

Now 20-11 on hard courts this season, Edmund will meet Fernando Verdasco for a place in the quarter-finals. Verdasco reached the second round on Tuesday, beating Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4. Edmund and Verdasco have never met at tour-level.

Mikhail Kukushkin clinched his first Top 10 victory in four years, battling past fellow Vienna debutant Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The 30-year-old Kukushkin, who claimed just his third Top 10 win in 36 attempts, won 73 per cent of service points and saved eight of nine break points.

Sixth seed and Rolex Shanghai Masters finalist Borna Coric will face second seed Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals after the Croatian fought past defending champion Lucas Pouille 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Anderson advanced without hitting a ball because Austrian Jurgen Melzer, playing singles in a tournament for the final time, had to retire because of gastritis.

Marton Fucsovics also produced an upset win to reach the quarter-finals. The Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open defeated seventh seed Fabio Fognini 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, converting six of nine break points to advance after two hours and two minutes. Fucsovics will meet Kukushkin or Andrey Rublev for a semi-final spot.

Karen Khachanov, winner of his third ATP World Tour crown at the VTB Kremlin Cup (d. Mannarino), overcame Austrian wild card Dennis Novak 6-3, 7-5 in 84 minutes for his 40th match win of the season (40-21).

France’s Gael Monfils, the 2008 runner-up, accounted for 2015 finalist Steve Johnson of the United States 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 44 minutes. Monfils dominated on serve to strike 18 aces and win 80 per cent of his first deliveries.

After opening the season in style with a surprise run to the Australian Open semi-finals, Kyle Edmund became the final first-time winner of the 2018 season at the European Open in Antwerp. The British No. 1 claimed his maiden tour-level crown in dramatic fashion, defeating Frenchman Gael Monfils 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4) after two hours and 27 minutes.

If there was any doubt that the moment meant a lot to the British No. 1, Edmund broke down into tears as he walked over to celebrate with his team after crushing a forehand winner down the line to clinch the milestone victory.

“I’m obviously very happy. A lot of hard work goes into this. So it’s just emotional,” Edmund said on court. “You always remember this one. Gael made me work for it today, that’s for sure, so credit to him. I’m just so happy.”

The 24-year-old Kyle Edmund has announced he will no longer work with the Swedish coach Fredrik Rosengren, achieving a lot together since the start of the collaboration during the Asian swing in 2017. In June of that year, Kyle had split with Ryan Jones and he found a perfect match in Rosengren who previously worked with Roland Garros finalists Magnus Norman and Robin Soderling.

Kyle had decided to appoint Fredrik as the long-term coach and they worked hard in the off-season, with Edmund reaching the semi-final at the Australian Open for his career-best result so far. The rest of the season was nothing but excellent as well, notching 36 ATP wins, lifting the maiden ATP title in Antwerp (read the match report HERE) and cracking the top-15 for the first time.

The Johannesburg native was forced to skip the Paris Masters with a left knee injury and he had a miserable start of 2019 as well, losing to Yasutaka Uchiyama in Brisbane and to Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open, losing a lot of points and barely staying inside the top-30.

Kyle will have to travel to the USA without Rosengren who has decided to conclude his coaching career and spend more time with his family. Mark Hilton is still in Edmund's coaching staff and it will be interesting to see if he is going to be his new coach or Kyle will seek for someone else in the following weeks.

Also, Kyle will probably enter the next week's strong Indian Wells Challenger to gain some form and wins, playing on this level for the first time since Rome 2016 when he defeated Filip Krajinovic in the title match. "Sad to announce Fidde is retiring from the tour.

You’ve been an integral part of the team over the last year and a half and together we’ve reached a top 15 ranking, a Grand Slam semi-final and won a title in Antwerp in October. I will be forever grateful, enjoy retirement!"

They have both lifted trophies on the ATP Tour, but on Sunday, Kyle Edmund and Andrey Rublev will duel for a piece of Challenger silverware. The stage is set for a highly entertaining clash as the British No. 1 squares off against the 21-year-old Russian star.

Edmund, who celebrated his maiden ATP Tour title in Antwerp last year, will meet 2017 Umag champ Rublev for just the second time in their budding careers. Their lone previous encounter came in qualifying of the 2015 Irving Challenger, which Edmund clinched 6-1, 6-4.

Both the Brit and the Russian are hoping their respective runs to final in Indian Wells will propel them to ATP Masters 1000 success in the coming weeks. In search of match play and confidence, Edmund is returning from a knee injury while Rublev is battling back from a persistent back ailment. Their strong performances in the desert are encouraging signs as they look to return to form and continue their ATP Rankings assaults.

Edmund, who sits at No. 27, advanced to the final with a three-set victory over Lloyd Harris. Rublev, meanwhile, will return to the Top 100 with a victory on Sunday. The former World No. 31 lifted his lone Challenger trophy three years ago in Quimper, France.

Edmund On The Mend: British No. 1 Eyeing Return To Form

Back in action following a knee injury, Kyle Edmund is hoping to kick-start his 2019 campaign at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Indian Wells

The ATP Challenger Tour has never had it so good. For the third straight year, a Top 30 player has decended on the circuit in their return from injury, in search of match play and confidence.

In 2017, then-No. 30 Richard Gasquet lifted the trophy in Szczecin, Poland and last year a 27th-ranked Kei Nishikori replicated the feat in Dallas, USA. This week, Kyle Edmund is hoping to complete the trifecta.

The World No. 27 is into the semi-finals at the Oracle Challenger Series - Indian Wells, following a pair of straight-set dismissals of Tommy Robredo and Lukas Rosol, and a comeback victory over eighth seed Yannick Maden on Friday. But while Edmund entered the week as the top seed and one of the biggest threats in the draw, it has not been smooth sailing for the 24-year-old as of late.

Edmund is finding his form in his return from a knee injury that emerged towards the end of the 2018 season. He entered the Indian Wells Tennis Garden without a win this year. But after putting his racquet aside for five weeks following the Australian Open, it has turned out to be the perfect decision in his recovery.

"I'm feeling good now," said Edmund. "I had two matches in Australia and I obviously wanted to get going with my season, but I decided to take a five-week training block after that. The positive thing is my body is ready and I'm confident with it. So far, it feels good. You can work hard in training, but nothing replicates match intensity. Playing in competitive tournaments is important and I've had a few matches here, which is good.

"It's the mental competitiveness of wanting to get going. As a tennis player, you're used to playing 10 months of the year. But in the past four months, I've had only two matches. You want to start playing again. To come here is great and I feel good. Every match I play I'm getting used to the speed and the pressures of break points. You can't really get that in training and practise."Edmund is coming off a career-year in 2018, which saw him enjoy a breakthrough semi-final run at the Australian Open in January, bookended by a season-ending maiden ATP Tour title in Antwerp. He would finish his campaign at a career-high World No. 14, and is hoping to rediscover that stellar form as he hits the restart button on his 2019 season.

"Last season was great. But when you have an injury and don't play many matches afterwards, you have to respect that. But it was a good year and for sure the stuff I learned I'll take into this year and hope it makes me a better player. Mentally it's another year of experiences on the tour. When you go a while without matches you have to be realistic with the level and try to be a really good competitor. I trust the tennis will come and I'm happy with how it's going."As Edmund returns to the court in Indian Wells, he does so with a new look to his coaching team. When Sweden's Fredrik Rosengren decided to part ways with the British No. 1 to spend more time with his family, Mark Hilton assumed the primary coaching role. The 37-year-old is a prominent figure in the British tennis landscape, having previously guided Daniel Evans to a career-high No. 41.

'Hilts' has worked with Edmund since 2017 and is eager to carry their progress to the new season.

"It's been a challenging period for him and some frustration being out injured," said Hilton. "It messed up his preseason a bit, which is why we decided to have a training block after Australia and really get him ready for this swing. His rehab has gone well and we're just hoping to get more matches this week. It's really important for him to get back on the match court and get back in this environment.

"There are still areas for improvement, but the most important thing is that he's physically healthy, which he is. And he's competing like he'd want to compete in the upcoming Masters events. It's almost like a dress rehearsal for him. It's fantastic matches and the field is so strong. These are guys he could potentially play next week."

The strong field Hilton refers to also includes fellow semi-finalists Lloyd Harris, Andrey Rublev and Evans, who reached the final last week in Delray Beach. Harris, one of the newest members of the Top 100, will face Edmund for the first time in Saturday's semi-finals.

When Kyle Edmund entered the week in Indian Wells, he remained in search of his first match win of the 2019 season. The British No. 1 achieved that and then some, notching five wins in five days to capture the title.

Edmund turned in a ruthless display in Sunday's final of the Oracle Challenger Series - Indian Wells, dominating Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-2 in just 54 minutes. In front of former World No. 2 Michael Chang and Oracle executive chairman Larry Ellison, Edmund fired nine aces and won an impressive 82 per cent (36/44) of total service points to triumph.


The 24-year-old is just four months removed from capturing his maiden ATP Tour title in Antwerp, but fell victim to a knee injury in the subsequent weeks. In search of match wins and an injection of confidence, he entered the ATP Challenger Tour stop in Indian Wells and the decision would pay dividends.

The World No. 27 streaked past Tommy Robredo and Lukas Rosol, before rallying past eighth seed Yannick Maden and overcoming fifth seed Lloyd Harris in Saturday's semis. And in his first meeting with Rublev in nearly four years, he blitzed the Russian star without dropping serve.

It was Edmund's sixth Challenger title in total, having dominated on the circuit in the early stages of his career. He kicked off his successful start with a title in Hong Kong in 2015 as a 20-year-old, followed by victories in Binghamton, Buenos Aires, Dallas and Rome.

Rublev, meanwhile, enjoyed one of the best weeks of his fledgling career in reaching the final. An ATP Tour champion in Umag in 2017, he also won a Challenger title in Quimper, France the year prior. The 21-year-old, a former World No. 31, is pushing towards a Top 100 return after battling a back injury last year.
