Struff will next face David Goffin on Saturday. Goffin, seeded 10th, dismissed an in-form Robin Haase 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2, booking his spot in the third round for the fourth time in five years. Haase, a quarter-finalist earlier this month at the Rogers Cup, had no answer for his Belgian opponent, who prevailed after two hours and 54 minutes.

Jan-Lennard Struff also enjoyed further success in St. Petersburg, beating #NextGenATP Russian Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-6(6). The 2017 semi-finalist notched his fourth win in six matches at the event after 68 minutes, landing 18 aces in a strong serving performance.

Struff did not face a single break point throughout the first-round encounter, winning 88 per cent of points behind his first serve. The World No. 50 will face top seed Dominic Thiem in the second round.

Struff Upsets London Hope Cilic In Tokyo

Jan-Lennard Struff caused an upset at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2018 on Tuesday when he recovered to beat top seed Marin Cilic, a contender for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals in November.

When Struff walked onto Arena 1 in the Musushino Forest Sport Plaza on Tuesday, he owned just a 1-12 record against opponents inside the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings. And despite trailing Cilic by a break in the third set, the German battled through to a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1) victory in the first round.

"It was a pretty tough one. Marin was serving twice for the match," Struff said. "I’m really happy I fought and hung in every point. At the end, I played a very good tie-break, and I’m very happy with the win."

While Cilic will be disappointed in his first opening-round loss in five months, the 30-year-old remains in sixth position in the ATP Race To London as he aims to qualify for his third consecutive Nitto ATP Finals, and fourth overall. The Croatian had reached back-to-back semi-finals in Tokyo, but he remains upbeat for the rest of the season.

“I have to evaluate the match with my team just to analyse a bit the things that I did well, things that I could do a little bit better. I now have five, six days until my next match in Shanghai, so I have time to train and also to mentally get ready,” Cilic said. “It’s getting to the end of the season and these events are big and you want to be sharp from the first match on. It’s important to just refresh, analyse well and keep going.”

"I tried to play every point and I was happy to go to the tie-break and in the tie-break, even after losing my serve on the first point, I played very tough," Struff said. "I’m pretty happy with my performance today."

Struff won the final seven points of the match, withstanding 13 Cilic aces to triumph after two hours and 20 minutes. He has now been victorious in five of his past six tour-level deciding tie-breaks, with all of those matches coming on hard courts. Struff is currently No. 56 in the ATP Rankings, just 12 spots off his career-best. The 28-year-old can move closer to that mark with a win in the second round, where he will face Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

The Frenchman battled from a set down to defeat three-time ATP World Tour titlist Damir Dzumhur 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes. The 31-year-old has now gotten through his opening-round match in Japan in all six of his appearances, and he has only lost to an opponent outside of the Top 20 in the ATP Rankings here once (2015, Muller).

Struff has won two of the pair’s three FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, triumphing on the two occasions in which they competed on an indoor hard court. The German most recently beat Chardy last year in Marseille.

Tsitsipas Overcomes Hiccup In Tokyo; Struff Backs Up Cilic Win

#NextGenATP stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur competed in their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting on Thursday. And while it almost certainly won’t be their last clash, Tsitsipas came out on top 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2018.

It seemed like deja vu, as De Minaur’s back was against the wall in his first-round match against Gilles Simon, too. In that encounter, the Aussie saved four match points in the second set before carrying the momentum to a victory. Against Tsitsipas, he fought off two match points in the second set to force a decider. But this time, the Greek was up for the challenge.

“Tennis is such a weird sport sometimes. You can win a match in the third set and it was a matter of one point today. If I would have won one more point — and I didn’t have just one opportunity to do that, I had a couple of them— I could have won that match 6-3, 6-2,” Tsitsipas said. “But it turned out to be a three-setter, 6-1 in the third, just to show how much a few points could make a huge difference.”

The 20-year-old might have arrived in Japan on a three-match losing streak. But Tsitsipas has enjoyed a tremendous breakthrough season, climbing to a career-best No. 15 in the ATP Rankings. So it was no surprise to see him steady the ship and break serve three times in the final set, winning 60 per cent of return points in the third.

“I knew that I was very close in his service games in that match. Almost every single service game of his was at 30/30 and was very tight every single time. So I just kept believing, kept fighting to get to that score and I didn’t make unforced errors in the third set on his service games, kept solid from the baseline and I was just patient,” Tsitsipas said. “I just made him play the crazy shots and he missed those shots, so that’s how I broke him so many times. I was just patient and trying to look for my opportunities with a short ball and that’s how I won the third set.”

Jan-Lennard Struff took the court Thursday for his first match since ousting top seed Marin Cilic. And while World No. 42 Jeremy Chardy battled hard, Struff advanced to the quarter-finals with a 7-6(3), 6-7(2), 6-4 victory after two hours and 19 minutes.

“It was a tough one after beating Cilic. Chardy is a very good player. But still, if you beat Cilic guys are expecting the next match is going to be again very good. So I tried to hang in and I think Chardy was better in the third set,” Struff said. “Somehow I managed to not get broken… He had momentum clearly on his side and I came back and fought back and I found a way to break him in the fifth game of the set with a little bit of luck, but it was a very good match.”

Chardy pressured the German’s serve early in the third set, earning a break point in two straight return games. But Struff managed to hold on both occasions and then break at 2-2, never looking back from there.

“He was playing very well and returning good. I tried to take it point by point and just tried to never quit. Every ball I tried to reach it and tried to make it as tough for him as I could,” said Struff, who next faces #NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov. “It worked out in the end.”

Struff Bounces Back From Tokyo Singles Heartbreak In Doubles With McLachlan

Jan-Lennard Struff suffered a devastating defeat in singles on Friday, failing to convert match point before ultimately losing to #NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov. But the German kept his head up on the doubles court later in the day and he was rewarded.

Struff and Ben McLachlan, half of last year’s winning team (w/ Uchiyama) in Tokyo, beat Dutchmen Robin Haase and Matwe Middelkoop 6-1, 6-4 to reach the final of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2018.

“I’m very happy. We played a great match. It was very tough after losing the singles today,” Struff said. “I’m very happy that we played decent and with energy from the beginning, and now really looking forward to the final.”

It is the pair’s fifth tour-level semi-final of the season as a pair, including a trip to the last four at the Australian Open and in Miami. McLachlan and Struff also reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

“I’m pretty happy that we got into the final. It’s been a good week so far,” Struff said. “Let’s see what the final brings. It will be a new match and we will give everything to win the title.”

On paper, it appeared the semi-final would be a nail-biter. Haase and Middelkoop have won three ATP World Tour titles in Pune, Sofia and Umag this year. But the winners saved all four break points they faced to come out victorious.

“We played really well. They’re a very tough team,” McLachlan said. “I’ve played Robin a couple of times and played with Matwe before, they’re both tough players, so really happy to get through that in straight sets.”

In the final, McLachlan and Struff will face No. 3 seeds Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus or Joe Salisbury and Yasutaka Uchiyama. Salisbury triumphed with McLachlan in Shenzhen last week and McLachlan partnered Uchiyama to the title in Tokyo last year.

“For me, it doesn’t really matter who we play,” Struff said. “We’ll try to win.”

At the China Open in Beijing, top seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic saved two match points to edge past Marcus Daniell and Wesley Koolhof 5-7, 7-6(4), 14-12 in just under two hours. Marach and Pavic, who have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals at London in November, saved match points at 9/10 and 12/11 in the Match tie-break.

Home favourite Ben McLachlan captured the doubles title in Tokyo for the second year in a row on Sunday, partnering German Jan-Lennard Struff past No. 3 seeds Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus 6-4, 7-5 to triumph at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2018.

"[It's] awesome. We've been doing great and we've had a great year, doing well in a lot of the big tournaments," McLachlan said. "Winning a title and actually holding up a trophy is an amazing feeling."

The fourth seeds had already shown their abilities as a pair this season, advancing to the semi-finals at the Australian Open and in Miami, while also reaching the last eight at Wimbledon. But this is their first team triumph, and Struff’s first victory in singles or doubles on the ATP World Tour.

"I know this legend has won already some titles but it's my first, so I'm very happy to win here," Struff said. "It was a great week and I love Tokyo so much."


McLachlan and Struff were strong throughout the week, winning the ATP World Tour 500-level event without dropping a set. For their efforts, they will share $115,620 and each gains 500 ATP Doubles Rankings points. The team will climb to No. 11 in the ATP Doubles Race To London, as they attempt to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time.

McLachlan arrived in Tokyo with plenty of momentum, not only as the defending champion (w/ Uchiyama), but having lifted the trophy at last week’s Shenzhen Open. The Japanese doubles star now owns three tour-level titles.

Despite their loss, Klaasen and Venus earned three more points in the match than the winners (63-60). The difference came on break points, as McLachlan and Struff saved all five they faced in the match.

"First set I think we did a great job, broke them at 4-4. From the second set on, they put a lot of pressure on our serves. We tried to win the first point on our serves in the game, but it was tough, they put a lot of pressure," Struff said. "They were better in the second set, but we tried to fight for every point and in the end, we are very lucky and very happy to win the title here."

These two teams can meet again in the second round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, where Klaasen/Venus have a bye as the No. 7 seed. While Klaasen and Venus will be disappointed to not claim their second title as a pair, they still split $56,620 and add 300 points to their tally.

“It’s been a great week for us. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and thanks to the crowd,” Venus said. “It was an unbelievable atmosphere out here.”
