- Nie miałem wystarczająco wiele czasu, aby być gotowym do gry w Waszyngtonie. To ta sama kontuzja lewego biodra, której doznałem w momencie nagłego skrętu w ubiegłym tygodniu w Atlancie - wyjaśnił przyczyny rezygnacji Nick Kyrgios, który w turnieju w Waszyngtonie miał wystąpić w singlu i w deblu.
Australijczyk z kłopotami z biodrem zmaga się od dłuższego czasu. Uraz dał znać o sobie w piątek podczas ćwierćfinału turnieju w Atlancie przeciw Cameronowi Norrie'emu. Tenisista z Canberry wówczas skreczował przy stanie 5:7, 0:3.

Kyrgios zapewnił jednak, że uraz nie jest bardzo poważny, a z turnieju w Waszyngtonie wycofał się dlatego, bo nie chce popełniać błędów z przeszłości, gdy występował nie w pełni sprawny, co później negatywnie odbijało się na jego zdrowiu. - Fizjoterapeuta zalecił mi kilka dni odpoczynku i rehabilitacji. To oczywiście rozczarowujące, ale jestem pewien, że w przyszłości jeszcze otrzymam szansę, by wystąpić w Waszyngtonie - tłumaczył.

Powrót do rozgrywek Kyrgios planuje już w przyszłym tygodniu, w Toronto. - Na tym etapie, w perspektywie zbliżających się turniejów ATP Masters 1000 i US Open, nie mogę ryzykować pogłębienia się kontuzji. W zeszłym roku podczas US Open nie byłem w pełni zdrowy, dlatego w tym chcę tego uniknąć - dodał.

After failing to convert three match points at 6/3 in a final-set tie-break, 2017 finalist Nick Kyrgios was faced with the prospect of a disappointing defeat on his return to the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday.

But, after missing his first serve down match point at 7/8, the Aussie produced fearless tennis to navigate his way out of danger. Kyrgios hit a 133mph second serve ace to extend the match and followed it up with a 137mph ace on the following point, before closing out a 6-7(2), 7-5, 7-6(9) win over Denis Kudla, on his sixth match point, after one hour and 58 minutes.

"[In my mind] I don't feel as if I can miss that serve again, so I just go for it," said Kyrgios. "It came off today, but obviously some days it's not going to work. But on days like today, obviously it got me the win.

"I have won a lot of matches doing that... It's high percentage for me. My serve is my best shot. It's high percentage to back myself and go for those serves under pressure. Sometimes you're going to lose, and most of the time, if you back yourself, you win the match."

The Brisbane International presented by Suncorp titlist improved to 20-9 at tour-level in 2018, avoiding a defeat which would have seen him drop 590 ATP Rankings points on 20 August. Kyrgios defeated David Goffin, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer en route to his maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final last year in Cincinnati.

"It's always good to get a win at a tournament that you know you did previously pretty well in... I'm just happy to get through," said Kyrgios.

Despite struggling with his movement at times during the first-round encounter, Kyrgios hit 61 winners, including 39 aces, to record his seventh win in 10 matches at the Ohio-based event. The World No. 18 improved his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Kudla to 2-0, having also won their only previous encounter at the 2015 BNP Paribas Open.

Kyrgios will face Gerry Weber Open titlist Borna Coric for a place in the third round. Coric won 83 per cent of service points and saved both break points he faced to cruise past Daniil Medvedev of Russia 6-2, 6-3 in 70 minutes.

Coric and Kyrgios are tied at 1-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, which includes their most recent encounter in Cincinnati. Two years ago, Coric defeated Kyrgios 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-6(6) in the Round of 32.

Gdy Nick Kyrgios wyszedł na kort i rozpoczął przygotowania do rozgrzewki, okazało się, że zapomniał wziąć ze sobą butów. Gwoli ścisłości - w torbie tenisowej miał obuwie, ale do uprawiania koszykówki. Te potrzebne do gry w tenisa po pewnej chwili doniósł mu jeden z członków jego sztabu.
Sam mecz I rundy turnieju ATP Masters 1000 w Cincinnati przeciw Denisowi Kudli był dla Kyrgiosa wyjątkowo trudny, i to nie powodu zabawnej sytuacji sprzed rozpoczęcia. Australijczyk zmagał się bowiem z urazem kolana. Choć swoją grę ograniczył niemal wyłącznie do serwisu, obronił meczbola i zwyciężył 6:7(2), 7:5, 7:6(9).



We wtorek Kyrgios zaserwował 39 asów. Jednego z nich, i to z drugiego podania, posłał przy piłce meczowej dla rywala. - Gdy nie trafię pierwszego serwisu, nie myślę o tym, że mogę przestrzelić także drugi. W tym meczu mi to wyszło i pozwoliło wygrać, ale będą takie dni, kiedy to mi się nie uda - powiedział na konferencji prasowej.

- W ten sposób wygrałem wiele meczów. Serwis jest moim najlepszym uderzeniem i to, że mogę na nim polegać, nawet wtedy, kiedy jestem pod presją, jest dla mnie ogromnym kapitałem - wyjaśniał.

W II rundzie, w środę, Australijczyk, zeszłoroczny finalista Western & Southern Open, zmierzy się z Borną Coriciem. - Cieszę się, że awansowałem dalej. Zawsze miło jest wygrać mecz w turnieju, w którym wiesz, iż w przeszłości sobie dobrze radziłeś - dodał tenisista z Canberry.

Aussie tacks on 16 more and reaches the third round at the Masters 1000 event

Aussie Nick Kyrgios avenged a 2016 Western & Southern Open loss to Borna Coric on Wednesday, beating the Croatian in an up-and-down second-round contest 7-6(1), 0-6, 6-3.

The 15th seed delivered 16 aces and saved six of nine break points against Coric, who now trails Kyrgios 1-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

“I knew I was always going to compete in the third set. I competed too hard in the first set to sort of just let the match slip and not compete, give myself a chance to win, at least,” Kyrgios said. “I know that right now I can still serve through these matches, and that's enough for me to compete and hang with these guys.”

Neither player was broken in the opener but Kyrgios ran away in the tie-break. Coric, however, responded immediately, converting his fourth break point of the opening game to lead 1-0. He broke two more times to even the match.

But Kyrgios, who set a tournament record with 39 aces on Tuesday, was clutch in the decider, converting his lone break point and erasing the only one he faced.

Kyrgios is the defending finalist in Cincinnati (l. to Dimitrov). He will next face 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hyeon Chung or World No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.

Roger Federer hit a shot in the third set of his third-round match against Nick Kyrgios at the US Open on Saturday that was so good, the Australian said he might even put it on his own Instagram.
The No. 2 seed sprinted forward to chase a Kyrgios drop shot at 3-3, shoveling a forehand around the netpost for a winner down the line from a few feet outside the doubles alley.
“It was definitely one of the more unique ones. Like I explained on court, you don't get an opportunity to hit around the net post very often, because in practice, you can't really train them," said Federer, who would triumph in straight sets to reach the fourth round. "The net is out further and the court is more narrow, so for a shot like this to happen in a practice, you will be running into a fence and you will hit it into the net.
“I have hit a few throughout my career, and, sure, they are always fun, just because sometimes you can sort of aim for it because you realise you have an option more, which you just never have. As you're hitting it, you're, like, 'Oh, I can just shove it down the line and just flat'. That's what happened today.”
You might expect the player on the wrong end of that shot to be discouraged by it. But Kyrgios was simply left with his mouth agape, as he was in awe of Federer’s magic.
“It was almost unreal. Almost got to the point where I wanted him to start making shots like that, and I finally got it. I was pretty happy with myself,” Kyrgios said. “It was unbelievable. I'm probably going to place it on Instagram.”
It won't be the first Federer hot shot posted on social media over the years. The 98-time tour-level champion has had his fair of highlight-reel-worthy moments.

“I definitely think it was a special one, no doubt about it,” Federer said of Saturday's shot. “I do believe the smash off the smash against [Andy] Roddick [in Basel in 2002] was special just because it was way back in the court, as well. And then there was one more in Dubai [in 2005] against [Andre] Agassi on break point. I was able to flick a ball. I still don't know how I did it today. It went for a lob over him. I don't know. It was just a massive point on top of it, and it was against Andre.”
But today’s shovel down the line is certainly up there, and when a shot is memorable in Federer’s book, you know it was pretty special.

W pojedynku II rundy międzynarodowych mistrzostw USA Nick Kyrgios przegrywał z Pierre'em-Huguesem Herbertem i prezentował się poniżej oczekiwań. W połowie drugiego seta zszedł do niego sędzia Mohamed Lahyani. Oficjalnie po to, aby sprawdzić, czy tenisiście nic nie dolega. Arbiter pozwolił sobie wówczas na dłuższą przemowę, która zmotywowała Australijczyka do lepszej gry. On też wygrał ostatecznie w czterech setach.

Po meczu Herbert miał pretensje do Lahyaniego, że ten przekroczył swoje uprawnienia i odmienił losy pojedynku. Opinię Francuza podzielili organizatorzy, ale sędzia nie został zawieszony w swoich obowiązkach. Szwedowi udzielono jedynie reprymendy i pozwolono dalej prowadzić spotkania. Podkreślono wówczas, że dotychczas był wzorowym arbitrem.

USTA nie zdecydowała się ukarać Lahyaniego, ale jego poczynaniom przyjrzały się władze męskiego tenisa. W swoim postępowaniu ATP uznało, że "działania Lahyaniego podczas meczu naruszyły bezstronność wymaganą przez sędziego". Tym samym 52-latek został zawieszony w swoich obowiązkach na dwa turnieje bez pobierania wynagrodzenia. Nie będzie mógł sędziować zawodów w Pekinie i Szanghaju, gdzie tenisiści będą rywalizować w pierwszej połowie października. Szwed powróci do touru podczas rodzimego turnieju w Sztokholmie.

Nick Kyrgios knew playing last week’s Shenzhen Open champion Yoshihito Nishioka in front of the Japanese’s home crowd in Tokyo would be a difficult proposition. But the 2016 champion was solid under pressure on Wednesday afternoon, saving two set points in the second set en route to a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory to reach the second round of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2018.

“It’s tough. He’s obviously riding a lot of confidence from last week, coming to your home and playing in front of your home crowd, he was probably looking forward to it today,” Kyrgios said. “It was a good match, I thought. He had a chance in the second set, but it’s never easy playing one of the home favourites.”



It was a strong performance by Kyrgios, who now owns a 7-1 record at this tournament. The 23-year-old has advanced past his opener 11 times in 12 events this season. It doesn’t hurt that he knows he has enjoyed success in Japan and against Nishioka, whom he defeated two years ago at Atlanta in their only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting.

“Not just here, just doing well in general is good for me confidence-wise on the tennis court. Obviously I’ve had success here before, so I think the conditions are a little bit different to the last time I played this tournament,” Kyrgios said. “I think indoors, it’s a little bit faster this year. It probably suits my game a little bit more. I feel good coming back to Tokyo. I’ve always played good tennis here. I won a couple titles here in juniors as well, so I always feel comfortable coming back.”

In the next round, the Aussie will face a stiff challenge in Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The No. 8 seed has defeated Kyrgios in five of seven previous FedEx ATP Head2Head clashes. However, they have not competed against one another since Roland Garros two and a half years ago.

Anderson

While Kyrgios got through in straight sets, No. 2 seed and Nitto ATP Finals contender Kevin Anderson had to scratch and claw to move past Aussie Matthew Ebden 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-2 after two hours and 11 minutes. The South African struck 22 aces and saved five of the six break points he faced to earn his third match win in Tokyo.

"It was definitely a tough match. Playing Matt, he has great hands and feel, he moves very well, he uses pace very well and I think he was doing it very effectively through almost the whole match. I really had to dig out some break points in the second set, which I think was really important in the end," Anderson said. "Fortunately I was able to really pick up and play a great tie-break."

In the first set, Anderson won just 57 per cent of his service points, a low number for one of the most dominant servers on the ATP World Tour. And while he could not break in the first two sets, the 32-year-old did well to battle until he found his opening.

"I wasn't really getting a good read on his serve at all," Anderson said. "In those settings my primary goal is to take care of my service games and if I'm not able to make any progress on their serve, at least put myself in a tie-break position."

Anderson has enjoyed the best season of his career, spending all but seven weeks inside the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings. He will next face #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe with a spot in his ninth tour-level quarter-final of 2018 on the line.
