Kyrgios needs to pick brains: Masur

Wally Masur hopes Nick Kyrgios spent the weekend picking the brains of Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt about what it takes to be a top 10 player because that's where he thinks the young Canberran is heading.

Kyrgios made his Davis Cup debut in Australia's 4-1 win over Poland, which returned Australia to the world group for 2014 after a six-year absence.

The 18-year-old partnered Chris Guccione in the doubles loss before playing the dead singles rubber against Michal Przysiezny, who withdrew due to injury when the former Daramalan student was leading 4-1.

As part of the team, Kyrgios worked daily with Rafter and Hewitt, both former world No. 1s, and Masur hoped he had absorbed as much as he could.

It has been a big year for Kyrgios who became the No. 1 junior in the world, won the Australian Open boys singles title, beat Radek Stepanek in his grand slam debut in the men's singles at the French Open and has now played for Australia in the Davis Cup.

''I look at Nick and you think, well, top 10, why not? Let's go,'' Masur said. ''If I was [Kyrgios] … I would talk to the likes of Pat Cash, Pat Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt and just pick their brains.
''What's it going to take to get where I need to get to?

''And whatever feedback he gets really think about it and act on it.

''They must know something those guys, they won grand slam tourn
aments and they were great players.''

He said Kyrgios ''has a big game, which is hugely important in the modern era''.

The former world No. 8 also felt that big game would play a big role in re-establishing Australia as a Davis Cup force.

Despite winning it 28 times, the last time in 2003, Australia has not been part of the world group since 2007 when Belgium knocked it out.

But Masur said Kyrgios, along with the controversial Bernard Tomic and youngster Thanasi Kokkinakis, would have a ''huge'' role in re-establishing Australia at the top.

Tomic won both his singles against Poland to guide the Aussies into Davis Cup contention in 2014, while Kokkinakis teamed with Kyrgios to win the boys doubles title at Wimbledon in July.

''He can't do it on his own, but we've got Bernie there and he's quality, and I'd love for someone like Thanasi to push through and I see him a bit like Nick - they've both got big games and it's just about getting the physicality to play the way they want to play day in, day out,'' Masur said.
''It's going to be Nick and a group of guys that are the next generation.''

While Masur said it was disappointing Kyrgios did not get to complete his singles rubber against Przysiezny, he could still take a lot out of the training block and experience.
''He takes a lot out of that and you'll see the benefit of that coming forward,'' he said.

Nick Kyrgios story: From Wimbledon to Bundoora

It was almost 7pm last Wednesday in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and Nick Kyrgios was restless. “Anyone wanna chill in bundoora tonight? # bored” tweeted the teenaged toast of Wimbledon and conqueror of 14-time major champion Rafael Nadal to his 72,800 global followers.

Someone did. Someone named Tim, a student at nearby La Trobe University, who quickly rustled up a group of his mates. Within a few minutes, the 21-year-olds were stunned when the world’s most exciting young tennis player and his friend and training partner Harry Bourchier arrived at their door.

And Kyrgios said, what, exactly? "Yeah, hey, I'm Nick, what's goin' on?'' he recalled with a laugh during a wonderfully frank interview with Fairfax Media on Friday at Melbourne Park. “They couldn't believe it. They were just standing there, and I was like 'you can just act normal.’

“We just talked, and then played a couple of games, just normal stuff. They asked me a lot of questions about Lleyton [Hewitt] and how the top guys were and that sort of stuff, so they were really eager to just find out what Wimbledon was like.

“But then I pretty much just said 'can we just stop talking about this stuff? Let's just talk about normal stuff. I'm just a 19-year-old kid, I don't really want to talk about all that other stuff’.’’ Normal stuff being, like? ‘’Just literally like cards, just literally normal stuff. You know, not much.''

Kyrgios and Bourchier stayed for about 90 minutes. “It was pretty cool. They actually came here yesterday and watched me practise, so I think we've got like, a new friendship sorta going on.'' They will be at the Australian Open, too; a new, and well, like, random fan club has just been formed.

If there are shades of the New York party invitation issued by Pat Rafter’s brother, Peter, to the Aussie backpackers who had driven to Flushing Meadows to see the Queenslander win his first US Open in 1997, in what was the genesis of the “Fanatics” fan club, then not since Rafter has Australian tennis welcomed a new tennis talent with such irresistible star power.

So open and engaging is Kyrgios that he bears precious little resemblance to the over-managed robots who populate so much of the sporting world while just taking it one week/match/yawn at a time. He is as he plays: free, natural, without inhibition.

The main memory of his outrageous surge to the Wimbledon quarter-finals: "Um, probably going to Chipotle Mexican grill every night with my friends and family. Every. Single. Day,’’ he grins. Not shaking hands with the world No.1 after you crushed him on centre court? "Nuh. Just Chipotle. It's the best place in the world.''

Canberra, though, is home, and it was there to his Malaysian mother Nill, Greek father George and lawyer brother Christos that Kyrgios retreated once Canadian Milos Raonic ended his extraordinary debut at the All England Club in four sets, the fuel gauge having teetered close to empty during his third best-of-five-set match in as many days.

There would, he thought, be a low-key welcome in the national capital, then some time to relax with his mates, shoot some hoops, play on his beloved X-Box. Some of that occurred; some did not.

"I was expecting just to come home to quiet Canberra and just chill out for a week, but it was nothing like that at all, which I was actually quite disappointed with, really,’’ he admits. “I got to the airport and there were about 800 people there, cameras everywhere, so it was pretty full-on. And even when I was at home, I was getting ... not to say pestered ... but it was pretty full-on.'' Translation: there were strangers knocking on his door, more demands and intrusions than he had wanted.

Indeed, the recognition has been the biggest change to a life that he has acknowledged will never be the same again. Last week, after training, Kyrgios was photographed wearing his signature pink headphones waiting for the tram outside Melbourne Park. Resolution one: never take public transport again.

The 19-year-old admits that despite the fact his phone had been “blowing up” with the volume of messages, he almost needed to return to Australia to fully realise the impact he had made. “In Canberra it was really crazy, but even in Melbourne it's pretty full-on.

“I can't really go anywhere without being noticed, so that's probably the biggest difference,'’ he adds, before considering whether that is a good or bad thing. “It can be a bit of both. I don't really mind it too much. I get to meet some new people and I'm only young, so I really enjoy that sort of stuff.

“It’s been positive support. [People are] really happy for me, I've been told numerous times that I did them proud and all that sort of stuff, so it's good. But I've been brought down to earth just coming down here and getting back to the hard work.

“Your dream is to win Wimbledon, win a grand slam one day and become No.1 in the world, so I'm not even close at all, I made quarter-finals, and it's all good, it's just motivation to keep getting better. That's that way I've looked at it.''

But perhaps not that far away. Not nearly as far as it was. One of the images on the home page of his official website juxtaposes photos of an anguished Nadal with a bellowing Kyrgios, and another records their handshake at the net, while the scale of the monster breakthrough is illustrated elsewhere on nickkyrgios.org.

In the achievements section, he is, yes, the "1st wildcard in 10 yrs to make Qtr finals; 1st player ranked outside top 100 to defeat a no.1 at a grand slam since Andrei Olhovskiy beat Jimmy(sic) Courier at Wimbledon in the 3rd round in 1992''. Scroll down further, though, and you will see that it was not so long ago he was also "Winner – Taralgon (sic) Grade 1 ITF''.

And now, here he is, preparing to depart for the US hardcourt circuit, with a bullet beside his name as a player to watch, having already been on the front page of the International New York Times and hailed by all who watched the Nadal slaying, two rounds after saving nine match points against Richard Gasquet.

Now battling a cold, after a heavy training bloc, the achievement has finally sunk in, but Kyrgios keeps the fourth-round match on his ever-present mobile phone, and admits he has watched it over and over. “It was a really good two weeks and I'm just reflecting on it, you know, it's something that's not going to go away quickly at all.

"When you get a bit sad or lonely, just watch it. It's just good for confidence and when you're sitting around just analyse how you played, and all that sort of stuff. I don’t go looking on YouTube and watching myself play, but when I just want something to do it's always an option.'' And that outrageous between-the-legs winner? "Yeah,’’ he beams. “That's pretty cool.’’

That, and more like it, have also been making more frequent appearances on the practice court of late. "Yeah, the boys have noticed that I'm going for more trick shots and stuff now, and they're starting to, as well. But it's just good to keep it fun out there. That's why you play the sport in the first place.''

Yet perhaps it is his hunger to reach the pinnacle, combined with the belief that he will get there, that is even more significant. Kyrgios took only a few days post-Wimbledon rest from practice, because he knew he had to, before resuming with his reinstated junior coach Todd Larkham – who replaced the unfortunate Simon Rea – because he wanted to. The motivation for Kyrgios was that he could not bear the thought of wasting time he could be using to keep improving.

Next stop is Toronto, then Cincinnati, for what at this stage will be the qualifying rounds of the Masters 100 double, then a training week before the US Open, his favourite grand slam, and the loudest, most chaotic and in-your-face of the Big Four. Which suits Kyrgios perfectly. Of course it does.

The expectations now will be far greater, he acknowledges, but not a burden, for he knows what is possible, having recently managed what even his beloved mother had doubted was achievable so soon. He expects to perform, and hopes to make another big impact, a world ranking of 65th having earned him direct main draw entry at a grand slam for the first time.

Meanwhile, back in Bundoora, a dozen or so La Trobe uni students are sure to be watching, having spent a cold Wednesday night getting to know the young man who just wanted a few new mates to “chill with’’, while getting used to his own status as the hottest young property in the game. As Nick Kyrgios might ask: “What’s goin’ on?’’ So far, there's an awful lot to like about the answer.

Australian Open debutant Nick Kyrgios inspired by form felllow countrymen

AUSTRALIAN teenager Nick Kyrgios says he's drawn inspiration from the summer form of leading countrymen Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic as he prepares to make his Australian Open debut.

The 18-year-old will face German world No.81 Benjamin Becker in the first round at Melbourne Park after earning a wildcard into the men's draw.

While his own path into the Open was disrupted by shoulder injury, Kyrgios said he had taken confidence from the performances of Brisbane International winner Hewitt and Sydney International runner-up Tomic.

``I did a lot of training with Bernard in the pre-season and he is really knuckling down. It showed last week how far he has come," Kyrgios said.

``He is playing (Rafael) Nadal this week and I don't think Nadal is going to be resting easy playing Bernard, he is playing some really good tennis.

``Obviously those guys are setting a good example for us next generation.''

The junior champion at Melbourne Park last year, Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the Brisbane and Sydney lead-in tournaments but yesterday declared his injured shoulder ready for his first Australian Open.

``I have done all the right things for it the last couple of weeks,'' Kyrgios said.

``Unfortunately, I couldn't play Brisbane or Sydney, but it's feeling good and I think it will hold up for the Australian Open.''

Despite his interrupted preparation, Kyrgios said he had made big strides since his junior title win last year and was confident he could perform on the big stage.

``I have had a lot of experience the last year,'' Kyrgios said.

``I played a couple of main draw men's grand slam and I am accustomed to the experience and how it feels so I am confident that I will go out there and perform pretty well.''

Kyrgios considered his first-round opponent Becker, who has not progressed beyond the second round in six apperances at Melbourne Park, a solid player on the tour.

``It could be a lot worse, but he has obviously proven himself to be a solid player on the tour, he has been around for a long time,'' he said.

``I am going to go out there and do what I do best and we'll see how it goes.''

Fellow Australian wildcard, 17-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, said he would be backing his own game when he takes on Dutch world No.69 Igor Sijsling in his first Grand Slam main draw match tomorrow (Tuesday).

``You have got to think every match is winable otherwise you have no chance of winning,'' Kokkinakis said.

``That's what I am going to go in with. I have beaten some good players the last couple of weeks so that gives me confidence, especially for this first round.

``I will probably be a little bit nervous coming out but then I have just got to focus on playing the ball and play my game.''

Kokkinakis believed this week's forecast extreme heat could help the Australian players, who are used to the conditions.

``We have grown up and brought up here so we we used to the weather a little bit,'' he said.

``Some of the European guys just came from really cold so I think we've got the advantage there. I feel pretty fit and I'm sure Nick does as well with the off-seasons that we've had.''

Q. Through to the second round. You must be extremely happy.
NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, obviously every time you get to the second round of a slam it's one of the best days, especially in my early career.

But it was really good playing in front of my home crowd this time. I'm pretty excited for the next round as well. I'm just soaking it in.

Yeah, it was a really good experience.



Q. How does it compare to France?
NICK KYRGIOS: I think this time was a lot better. My whole family was there, my friends, and just the home support. Just trying to get a win at the Australian Open. Just seeing Rusty, Marinko all battle it out. I was waiting to get my opportunity.

Especially being injured the last couple months, it was really special, this win.



Q. How much of an issue was the shoulder today?
NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, it pulled up really well. I thought lasted four pretty tough sets. Massive improvement from what it has been. It's holding up well enough I think it will be fine.



Q. Getting treatment in the fourth set was just precautionary?
NICK KYRGIOS: I was feeling it a little bit, but that's normal. You're always going to sort of carry a bit of a niggle. I thought it would be smart to get it a bit worked on, yeah.



Q. No major issue there?
NICK KYRGIOS: No, not at all. Not at all.



Q. First time in your career going into the second round of this slam. Mentally how do you approach it?
NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, well, I know who I'm playing already. My coach will watch a bit of film. We'll talk it over. We'll do whatever we can, whatever we can control to give me the best chance of winning.

Second time I've been in the second round. I can draw my experiences from France and do things I didn't do so well there. I can improve on those for my second round.



Q. You outhit Becker by 71 winners to 38 today. Was that the plan from the start?
NICK KYRGIOS: My game sort of revolves around being pretty aggressive. He's a really solid player. I knew I was going to have to go through him a bit. I didn't know those stats at all but that's an incredible amount of winners. Obviously a pretty aggressive minded match, yeah.



Q. You seemed really pumped up the last game of the fourth set. Really going for it then?
NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, it's either you've got to step up or you're going to lose that fourth set. He's not going to give you anything to sort of get you back in the match.

So I thought I had to step up and, you know, I played a really good tiebreak. I thought he didn't play that bad in the tiebreak. It was a pretty exciting match. The crowd got me over the line, I thought.



Q. How much do you take out of twice fighting back after being down a break?
NICK KYRGIOS: Yeah, you got all those emotions running through your head. It's hot out there. The guy is picking up his game. You're not playing very well. There's a lot of things that can throw you off thinking about the fifth set.

You've just got to sort of stay in the moment, take your chance. I thought I did really well this that game, in the tiebreak. I played a pretty flawless tiebreak. Maybe next time I don't get so lucky and it goes to a fifth set. It is what it is. So, yeah.



Q. I think it's still 41 degrees outside. How do you deal with the heat?
NICK KYRGIOS: I think it suits my game pretty well. It will suit my serving a lot. The more aggressive you are, I think it helps a lot.

Obviously it's affecting everyone out there. It's pretty tough. You got to stay hydrated. You got to be smart with nutrition, as well.

Yeah, tough conditions out there, for sure.



Q. What is it like being part of this Australian tennis revival?
NICK KYRGIOS: A lot of people are saying the next generation is coming through. It's pretty exciting for us. A bit of expectation and pressure. But we're all a pretty close bunch. We're pushing each other.

Having the likes of Lleyton still going out there and competing with the best, Marinko and Bernard, they're setting a good example for us young guys. We're doing our best to get some results.



Q. What have you learned from Bernie's journey the last couple years?
NICK KYRGIOS: He's had a pretty bumpy road but I think he's come a long way. Playing Davis Cup with him as well you get to know him a bit more. I did a lot of training with him in the pre season. He's improved a lot. We did a lot of tough training that I didn't think he could do a couple years ago but now he's doing it.

He had some great success in Sydney as well, so I'm pretty excited for him as well.
