Wawrinka outlasts Hewitt to clinch World Group for Swiss

Obrazek

Stanislas Wawrinka finishes off Lleyton Hewitt in a decisive Davis Cup singles rubber on Monday in Sydney. Switzerland returns to the World Group for 2012.

It took Stanislas Wawrinka just three minutes to put Switzerland back in the Davis Cup World Group.

Actually, Wawrinka needed more than four hours in total. But after resumption of play on Monday, the Swiss wasted no time finishing off Australia's Lleyton Hewitt for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3 victory at the Royal Sydney Golf Club.

A back-and-forth thriller saw Hewitt earn a critical break at 5-4 in the first set to seize an early lead. Wawrinka returned the favor by the same scoreline in set two, then Hewitt saved four set points in a dramatic third before taking it 9-7 in a tiebreaker.

With Hewitt hobbling due to minor knee and foot injuries, Wawrinka regained the momentum in set four. The world No. 19 gave back an early break, but after his second break of the set he closed out the proceedings on serve at 5-4. Wawrinka surged to a 5-3 advantage in the fifth before darkness halted play on Sunday.

They came back out one day later with Hewitt serving to stay in the match. The world No. 199 jumped out to a 0-30 lead, but two double-faults followed by two forehand errors ended it in Wawrinka's favor and ended the host nation's hope of reaching the World Group.

"On grass it's never easy to play Hewitt," said Wawrinka. "It was a really tough weekend. It's really important for me to play for the Swiss team. I was really happy to be here. I think against Lleyton I played one of my best matches in Davis Cup.

Stanislas Wawrinka will compete the rest of the year without a coach.

World No. 19 Stanislas Wawrinka has announced that he has ended his working relationship with his coach, Peter Lundgren. The pair had worked together since August 2010.

"I would like to thank Peter for all the work together," said Wawrinka. "Thanks to him I have achieved back-to-back quarter-final spots at US Open 2010 and Australian Open 2011. He played a major role in my career and I am extremely grateful."

Lundgren, who has also coached Marcelo Rios, Roger Federer and Marat Safin, said, "It's been a privilege to work with Stan as his coach and I'm happy to have played my part in his career. Stan is a great player and I know he will continue to have the success his talent and hard work deserves."

During their 16-month partnership, Wawrinka won one ATP World Tour singles title at the 2011 Aircel Chennai Open (d. Berdych in SFs; l. to Malisse) and reached the last eight at the 2010 US Open (l. to Youzhny) and the 2011 Australian Open (l. to Federer).

Wawrinka added, "I've had a great relationship with Peter over the past year and I want to thank him for his positive contribution to my career. We have had a lot of success and fun working together."

Wawrinka, 26, will play out the season without a coach.

Wawrinka Visits Shanghai United Hospital

Obrazek

Stanislas Wawrinka visited the Shanghai United Hospital on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Swiss spent 30 minutes visiting kids and meeting with doctors and staff at the hospital.

"It is important for us to be able to give back to the community," said Wawrinka. "We get to travel all around the world and stay in nice hotels, eat well and play tennis in front of thousands of people. So taking a bit of time out of our schedules to visit the kids is a nice thing to do.

Wawrinka is the No. 13 seed at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. He will play either second seed and defending champion Andy Murray or resurgent Russian Dmitry Tursunov in the third round on Thursday.

SWISS INDOORS BASEL 2011

Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka advanced with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Dutchman Robin Haase, converting four of his 17 break point chances during the two hour, eight-minute match. The World No. 19 is through to the quarter-finals for the third time at his home country tournament, also reaching this stage in 2006 and '10.

"It’s always a lot of pressure when you start a match because you want to play good, you want to stay in the tournament and play a lot of matches," he said of playing on home soil, "but then you need to just stay focused on your game and try to play your best match possible."

Federer Faces Wawrinka Next

World No. 19 Wawrinka broke serve four times from nine opportunities and surrendered just nine points on serve as he claimed his 35th win of the season. He will look to overturn a 1-9 record against Federer, with his only victory in their series coming on clay at the 2009 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Federer has won all three of their meetings this season in straight sets.

"I was expecting a very tough match against Florian, he’s a very good player, but I think today I played my best match of the week," said Wawrinka. "I played really good, really aggressive; everything was good. To reach the semi-final here in Basel is very important for me, especially at the end of the season."

Stanislas Wawrinka
GENTLE SIDE

His season ended, finally calm, the tennis champion Vaud book another side of himself in a series of intimate pictures. For "illustrated", he turns over a year in 2011 filled with many emotions.

By Marc David - Posted on 13.12.2011

Make different photos, Stanislas Wawrinka had really wanted. Desire not to appear as the only tennis player who goes bravely to the net and sent a flurry of setbacks millimeter uncrossed his favorite shot. "I wanted to show something that people do not usually see in me is true," he slips at the end of the shoot, classy, which took place in a studio postindustrial on the outskirts of Geneva. "Photos of tennis, I make all year long. I have the pleasure to present a more fashionable, casual, quiet. I do not often get to do it. "He behaved like the lens on a short: accurate, attentive. Very gentle in his turtleneck, very human, shirtless. Very Wawrinka.

"With these photos, I wanted to show something that people do not usually see in me"

ELEVEN MONTHS, A MILLION

He leaves a sacred year, Stanislaus, at all levels. Sportingly, he began by winning the tournament in Chennai (India) and then gloss the Australian Open, not abutting on Federer in the quarterfinals, after Roddick and Monfils disgusted. He has dropped the paddle against the same as Federer at Roland Garros. A mumbled and Wimbledon in Gstaad, Switzerland saved the Davis Cup in Sydney, has a good health again in Basel and then finished the season at the feet of giant Isner at Paris-Bercy.

What keeps these eleven months, except for a million dollars in prize money gleaned? "Oh, everything's so fast. This year, I did not see it happen. I tell myself that being ranked 17th worldwide, it's something. It is not enough to snap your fingers to get there. I remember all the hours of training, travel. "

"IT will pass"

It progresses, of course, but it lacks the powerful blast that would to a great victory. He shrugs: "I have always been a hard worker and someone who gave himself time to get there. This is my way of building. "It is so. Up to 16 years, he was never part of the best in its class. "Maybe my talent is to accept being on the ground early and finish late. And repeat it every day, alone or with a coach. I've always had that strength. "

So there's no rush anything. "I do not miss it for grandchose back in the top ten. I would have been if I had won one or two more quarter-finals. In my opinion, it was one of my best years. I will continue to fight and it will pass. Next year will be a big year for tennis, especially for the Swiss tennis. With so many beautiful things to do. "He of course talked about what Federer is a great victory. "But my goal in the coming years is not to win a Grand Slam. It would not be fair to say as I've never been in the semifinals. "

"I do not consider my fair value"

STAN FERRER AS

Next to him, he likes it or not, there is the blinding light of the exploits of the spooky Basel. Wawrinka did not hide the kind of annoyance that he provide the constant comparisons with the phenomenon outside class. "Regardless of my results, I compared to Roger. It bothers me a little, especially in Switzerland. One can not oppose one to Roger. This is the greatest player of all time. It blew all the records and it will still explode. I am 17th world. Few Swiss athletes - I think of football, to hockey - are as good in their field. I do not consider my true value. It does not put me forward enough, sometimes. There is also the same thing with David Ferrer in Spain, compared to Nadal. "

Federer, it benefits greatly, he admits. "Being at the same time as he remains a huge advantage. This is an incredible player and a man I really appreciate. But I think the press too hard with the Swiss tennis. Will be appreciated on the day when there will be no one. For attention, we were spoiled for the last fifteen years, but it will be very difficult to have a future as excellent. "

He stands, despite the storms of his life, on or off the court. In September 2010, he was suddenly separated from his wife, Ilham. The press has widely reported. He faced a different view of him, the more critical. He never responded publicly, and it will not start today. He does not talk about this. Topic closed, secret garden.

The word "professional" is often in his speech. No trace of misplaced sentimentality. "The sensitivity, we try to put a lid on it when you're on land. It is important not to be too affected. Any set aside, especially when you play for friends. On the circuit, there are but few friends of friends. We go out together, have fun but ends up opponents. "Sometimes the feelings are exposed elsewhere. The other day it came out of the movie Untouchables upset.

TATTOO OF FATHER

And there's the new tattoo on his body. This name, Alexia, this drawing of the hand of his daughter 21 months. He spoke with infinite modesty. "We will not make a whole chapter. I was tattooed this summer, I've always wanted. I put a lot of time finding the place and what I really wanted. "Burn the name of his daughter was obvious. "It's perfect for me. Like everyone else, a child changes your life. Alexia has changed mine. I was so glad she can come and Ilham see me play in Gstaad, Basel, Bern. "But, hush, her skin will just speak for him, for them.

"I've been tattooed by hand and the name of my daughter this summer. It changed my life "

Its ups and downs in 2011

"My worst enemy? ROGER! "

Your favorite moment in 2011?

Davis Cup in Sydney in September. I start at the bottom, I'm hurt, I do not know if I can play. Federer arrived on Friday, tired. He tears himself, won his first match. Decisions are risky, but thoughtful. Against Hewitt, I am one of my best matches, I prove that I can get a great meeting when necessary. Of pure happiness.

Your worst moment?

Wimbledon. I lose the second round against Bolelli (currently 134th player in the world). I get out of a bad week of preparation, I made mistakes, I mismanaged certain aspects. There is nervousness, frustration.

Your best opponent?

There is none. Tsonga or say, at Roland Garros. I'm losing 2 sets to 0, 4 games to 1, then I win in front of his audience. Strong emotions against a player I like. The kind of game left in a career.

Your worst enemy?

Roger ... I lost against him in Australia, Indian Wells, at Roland Garros in Basel. Many games of points lost, missed opportunities. Basel is that I spent most closely. I was close to him, things would have turned out differently. He knows it too.

Chennai Open: Title holder Wawrinka wary of challengers

Obrazek

Swiss World No. 17 Stanislas Wawrinka knows that he cannot take things for granted when he begins his title defence at the Aircel Chennai Open starting on Monday.

"The draw is very interesting. It will be a great tournament," Wawrinka said of the impressive field that include Serbian World No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic, World No. 10 Nicolas Almagro of Spain and big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic.

"Tipsarevic has showed in 2011 that he is one of the contenders for the top 10 in 2012. Raonic is a young player with an impressive game who loves to play on any fast surface and can cause some upsets in the next few months. Almagro is a big fighter and a tough opponent," said the Beijing Olympics doubles gold medallist.

"I have played some great tennis here and hope that it will be the case again this year. The tournament has an impressive line-up and it will be very challenging. The level in men's tennis is such that you have to play your best to be able to win matches, leave alone thinking about reaching finals or winning titles. I'm confident that I can do well again, hopefully with the support of the crowd." The Swiss has good memories of Chennai, having defeated Belgian Xavier Malisse to win the title at the tournament's last edition.

"I always look forward to the week in Chennai. The conditions suit my game and I have played some great matches in this stadium. The atmosphere can get very electric, the crowd is enthusiastic and that's something I like," he said, ahead of the 17th edition of the India's only ATP World Tour event at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium.

Wawrinka said he has worked hard during the off- season and is eagerly waiting for the season to start.

"This will be my fourth time in Chennai. I always feel very welcome here. I love the events at the beginning of the year and hopefully I can do as well as last year or maybe even better."

"Breaking back into the top- 10 would be great and is one of my goals. I am not that far and feel that I can do it," said Wawrinka.

Meanwhile Tournament organising committee chairman and All India Tennis Association vice- president Karti P Chidambaram handed over kits to all the tour officials on Thursday.

The kits were provided by the official apparel and footwear partner, Wilson. The ceremony held at the SDAT- Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium, officially marked the start of the countdown to the ATP tournament that starts on Monday.

INTERNAZIONALI BNL D'ITALIA 2012
Stanislas Wawrinka Q&A: A Good Front Runner
Rome, Italy

Obrazek
Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Robin Haase in his opening match.

As part of ATPWorldTour.com's Q&A series, World No. 20 Stanislas Wawrinka revealed at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia what it takes for him to play his best tennis, his favourite time of the tennis season and his thoughts on the Olympics.

What do you have to do to play your best tennis?
You need to practise every day and work a lot for that. The thing in tennis is it's tough because you don't always play good, but you have a chance almost every week to play your best tennis. I’m really happy with my clay season (14-6 on clay). I think I’m playing really good. I think I have a strong game.

When you do play well on clay, what works well for you?
I serve well usually. I can really put pressure on opponents with my forehand and my backhand. Especially with my backhand, it's really strong, so I can make the game with my backhand and finish with my forehand.

You've got an excellent record when you win the first set - you're 169-40 lifetime. Does your confidence grow when you get off to a good start?
For sure. It's always good to win the first set, especially when you are playing a tough opponent. If you take the first set, it's always good for the rest of the match.

Do you feel as if, even now, you're improving year by year?
Not every year. But this year and the last moments, I just need one or two big match wins again to rise up the [South African Airways ATP] Rankings again and be back in the Top 10. I'm still working for that.

Roland Garros and Wimbledon are coming up. Is this a time of the year, in general, that you like the most?
It's a time of the year I really like because we're playing on clay courts. It's in Europe, so it's more easy travel. I think, I always find something I really like in every tournament. It's always a different place, a different tournament, so there's not one tournament or one moment of the year that I prefer. It's our life to travel and see different cities, and I always find something that I really like and enjoy.

You're going to go into the Olympics with the gold medal. Has the Olympics Games been one of your first thoughts for this year?
Not really, because it's tough to say that the Olympics is going to be my tournament to win. It's going to be tough, a really strong draw. For sure it's an important time of my career, to represent your country, to play Olympics, but the good thing is I already have a gold medal so it's not like I’m running after something, because I already have one. It's something amazing; I can really enjoy the Olympics.

Wimbledon 2012 - konferencja po meczu 1 rundy:
J. MELZER/S. Wawrinka

3‑6, 7‑6, 2‑6, 6‑4, 8‑6

Q. Have you ever been in that sort of situation before?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: What situation?

Q. Like today.
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, in Paris, French Open, one month ago. We stop after 4 2 in the fifth set and we come back the next day to finish the match.

Q. Did you sleep well last night?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, it was okay. No problem to sleep.

Q. What do you feel about today?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: For sure I'm disappointed, but it's tennis, part of the tennis. It's never easy to lose a match like that, especially in the fifth set.
But I think was a good match. I think we play some great tennis during five set. For sure I'm really sad about the result. But at the end he was playing a little bit better, especially yesterday in the fifth set.

Q. How did you feel about playing Melzer in the first round?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I knew it was going to be a tough match for sure. He's a great player, especially on grass. I think he's one of the only player that I'm not really happy to play, non seeded player.
I had some chance during the match. I didn't took it. And, yeah.

Q. Was there a particular point of the match where you think you lost the match?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: No, not really. I think when you play a five set match more than three hours, you have some up and down in both side, you have some chance in both side.
I don't think one point can make the difference of the match.

Q. How would you assess your year so far coming up to this point?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: No, my year is not that bad. I think my game is there. For sure I'm really disappointed with the result here. I was looking forward to play some good matches here.
But my clay season was pretty good.

Q. What is your schedule now?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, I'm going to go back home and play Gstaad tournament before the Olympics. I'm going to come back on clay for one tournament.

Q. What do you expect from Gstaad?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: It's always a pleasure to play there. We only have two tournaments in Switzerland. We don't have that many chances to play with people, family and friends, so I'm looking forward to that tournament.
