Wywiad po porażce w 4. rundzie

Cytuj:
Q. How much of Saturday night's match played a part in tonight's result, the fatigue?

GILLES SIMON: I don't know. It was just difficult for me today. I knew it before. But I think I just did all I could for the last two days to be able to play this one.

It was a painful hour and a half on the court. But, you know, Andy is anyway a very good player so it's always very hard to beat him. Without being 100% you have almost no chance to do it.

I just wanted to do my best at any moment. But it was getting worse and worse on the court. It was a really difficult day.

Q. Was there any point where you thought you might not turn up on court or pull out during the match?

GILLES SIMON: No, I wanted to play it. I mean, it's part of the game. A slam is a very long event, long match sometimes.

It was my job to be in a better shape today and to win the match before not playing 4 hours and 45 minutes. One more time, I knew it would be difficult today, but it's just the way it is.

Q. How do you think he's playing?

GILLES SIMON: It's difficult to say. I didn't make him work a lot. I just can say that he was missing his forehand at the end. He was going for the winners every time.

But, no, it's difficult. It's not easy for him also because there is no intensity. So sometimes I'm playing two good shots, and then I give two games in a row. So it's very difficult for him to play his tennis.

From what I saw from early on, I think he's in a good shape.

Q. What did you have to do in the last 24 hours to be able to play this match?

GILLES SIMON: Yesterday I was just biking 20 minutes, you know, stretching, massage, cold bath. I did everything I could. But it's difficult when you run a marathon two days before to go for one more two days after.

Q. What percent do you think you were at today?

GILLES SIMON: Oh, I don't know. Very low.

Q. He's playing Jeremy Chardy in the next round. Do you think there's a chance of an upset there?

GILLES SIMON: Well, the last match I saw between them, Jeremy won it. It's gonna be a match completely different. Jeremy's very aggressive. He has a huge serve, huge forehand. He's able to hit some winners at any moment.

It's going to be difficult for him also to recover from all the match he played. But Andy will have, of course, his chance to win. But it's gonna be interesting to see the beginning of the match, because if Jeremy manage to win maybe the first set, then I think everything can happen.

Gilles Simon in semis after hard fought battle

The 40th edition of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament will for sure have a French finalist. The fifth-seeded Gilles Simon saw his opponent Martin Klizan retire with a 6-7 (6), 6-3, 3-0 and will on Saturday night in the semis play his compatriot Julien Benneteau, who earlier on the night caused a big surprise by beating Roger Federer.
In the 79-minute first set Slovakian Martin Klizan, 31st of the world, stood regularly with his back against the wall. He had to work away twelve breakpoints. Simon did a little bit better and saw Klizan only get three. Eventually it come down to a tiebreak. Klizan utilized his second set point and won.

The set win seemed to give him wings: he broke his French opponent immediately. But Simon was alert (1-1). During the second set physical problems came to the surface by Klizan. At the start of the third set he was treated by tournament doctor and physiotherapist Wart Soest, but even he couldn’t help the tall Slovakian. At 3-0 Klizan threw the towel.

On Saturday Simon and Benneteau will take on their sixth clash. Simon has in the past recorded one more win: 3-2.

Nabił trochę swój licznik. Tytuł szczególnie istotny, że świeżo (13 dni) po narodzinach swojego drugiego syna. Pewnie jakaś dedykacja poszła. Szczęścia z życiu rodzinnym, Gillou. ;)

299 wygranych spotkań ma na koncie Gillou. Jeżeli dobrze zniesie trudy przelotu do Azji, to powinien w tym tygodniu przekroczyć granicę 300. wygranych pojedynków w ATP Tour. ;)

AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2014
Simon Saves 7 Match Points
Melbourne, Australia

Obrazek
No. 18 Gilles Simon advances to the
second round of the 2014 Australian
Open.

French No. 18 seed Gilles Simon saved seven match points in a marathon 6-7(4), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 16-14 win over Germany’s Daniel Brands at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

In the battle lasting four hours and 32 minutes, Simon rallied from 15/40 and three advantages down at 9-10 in the fifth set and again recovered from 15/40 at 13-14. He broke Brands at 14-14 before serving out victory.

An injury sustained in January affected Simon's game plan. “I needed fast conditions. I didn’t want to run so I knew that serving would be very effective.” said Simon. He served 32 aces in the match to Brands' 41. “I’ve never served that many aces in a match,” said Simon.

Even as Brands increased his lead to a 2-1 set advantage, Simon focused on making his mark. “At least I had a chance, even to win the [fourth] set, to create some pressure, to create something. Then if I lost, I would have been okay with the result.

“I managed to play very relaxed. It was very important, because for [Brands] it was a very tough match, very complicated. He was hitting every good stroke like it was a winner,” said Simon. “He knew he had everything in his hands.”

Simon goes on to face Marin Cilic, who also came through in dramatic fashion, rallying from two sets down to beat Marcel Granollers 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

AO - konferencja po meczu 1 rundy:

Cytuj:
Q. Can you talk through your decision whether to play today or not play today given your injury from Kooyong.
GILLES SIMON: Well, I just try my best to be ready for the match. Was in really bad shape after Kooyong on Saturday. I think I just got lucky that the recovery was that fast for the ankle.

Still, it was very limit to go on court today. It's always a tough decision to make. Like you go, and I think this time I got pretty lucky. Maybe you can just lose 2‑1‑1, and have a different feeling at the end. Would prefer to go full for sure.

You know, I just have a call to make. I say, Okay, it's not easy that everybody saw me with the crutches. If I just go and I'm ridiculous, I guess no one's going to talk good about me.

But, I mean, normally I just don't pay attention. I just see the guy I'm facing. I know the guy has a good serve. I know he's weaker from the baseline, so I know I can serve full. I mean, I never serve that many aces in a match.

I know it's 40 degrees. Okay, we never know, just try, just go, everything can happen. I go, but then I got lucky.

Q. Were you able to play pain‑free?
GILLES SIMON: Oh, no, I'm not playing pain‑free. Far from that. No, it's really painful.

But you decide what you will do on the court. I was just focusing on this. When he broke me after the third game, I say, Oh, it's going to be a difficult day today.

Finally he got tight and I think I used it very good. I played a lot of serve and volley. I felt I couldn't run from the baseline, so I was trying to keep it short to break to rhythm, to give no rhythm to this match.

The conditions helps, because when it's 40 degrees you just miss everything because everybody is so slow. I just managed to play relaxed, focused on what I had to do, what I could do. Then I got lucky because I think he could win this match 15 times.

Q. Down 2‑1 in the sets, did you think about retiring?
GILLES SIMON: No. I decide I will go on court and then I see. Even if it's 6‑1 in the fourth, it's okay.

For me knowing that I'm really not in a good shape, just to go on court, play already 7‑6, I said, Okay. At least I had a chance, even to win this set, to create some pressure, something. Then if I lose, I'm okay with it. Like I know it before I go.

So that's why I manage to play very relax. It was very important, because for him it was a very tough match, very complicated. You could see every time he was hitting a good stroke like it was a winner. I think he played like 111 winners, so I just had to pick up one side every time.

So he was in a really bad situation playing someone very relaxed. He knew he had everything in his hand and he had many occasion. Finally he lost this match. He must feel pretty sad now.

Q. Did you ever consider the weather conditions as well?
GILLES SIMON: Yeah, but it was good for what I wanted to do on court. I needed fast condition. I didn't want to run. So you know the serve is going to be very effective. It's good for him. But today it was good for me also. And then it was no reason.

I mean, I watch all the match on the outside courts, plus with the wind during the day, like it was really hard to play.

So I felt it was, yeah, exactly what I needed today and I think it helped me a lot.

Q. So the conditions helped you?
GILLES SIMON: Yeah. If I feel ready and I want to fight from the baseline, then he a tough opponent because I will just look for rhythm in the match and finally the condition will be helpful for this. He will serve fast, with the wind, with the heat; you don't control anything.

But today it was the other way. I just wanted it to be as short as possible with no reason. I wanted him to feel bad, to get tight, and I managed to do that.
