Gilles Simon Meets Baby Boy

Obrazek

He’ll never, ever remember it for that reason. Check out these great photos of Simon meeting his son Timothee for the first time.

Timothee was born four weeks early on Sept. 2, while Simon was competing in the US Open. His girlfriend Carine Lauret gave birth to the baby boy, and as you can see for yourself, Gilles is already in love with the new edition to the family.

A former Top 10 player, Simon moved up eight spots in the ATP rankings to No. 33 with the title at Metz.

SIMON JOINS "200 MATCH WINS CLUB", ENDS MONTE-CARLO DROUGHT

Obrazek
Gilles Simon recorded his 200th tour-level victory.

Frenchman Gilles Simon ended a run of three first-round exits at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and marked his 200th tour-level win in emphatic style on Tuesday as he dismissed Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-2 in the first match on Court Central.

The No. 16 seed saved six of the seven break points he faced and capitalised on four of his five opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 33 minutes. It marked his first win at the Monte-Carlo Country Club since his debut in 2006, when he reached the third round (l. to Ljubicic).

"It was a good match. I'm happy," said Simon. "It was a good fight. I knew I had to play well because every time I dropped my level of game, he was coming back. So it was a good first round."

Reflecting on his 200 victories, Simon commented, "I remember the finals. I remember the victories against the top players more than the losses against lower-ranked players, even if those losses were also useful for me to learn from."

The 26-year-old Simon, who won his eighth ATP World Tour title at the start of the season in Sydney (d. Troicki), improved to a 16-9 match record in 2011. He is coming off back-to-back quarter-final showings in Miami (l. to Federer) and Casablanca (l. to Starace).

Simon will next face World No. 23 Albert Montanes after the Spaniard cruised past Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2 in 82 minutes. The 30-year-old Montanes is coming off a season-best semi-final showing in Casablanca (l. to Andujar) last week.

Fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer will open his campaign against countryman Feliciano Lopez after the left-hander sent down 18 aces in a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Serbian Janko Tipsarevic. The 29-year-old Madrid native recorded his seventh tour-level win of the season and takes a 6-3 career lead into his clash with Ferrer.

There was more success for Spain as Guillermo Garcia-Lopez dispatched French qualifier Vincent Millot 6-2, 6-4 in 77 minutes and qualifier Pere Riba came from behind to beat Italian Potito Starace 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Italian Fabio Fognini and Argentine qualifier Maximo Gonzalez both recovered from a set down to win their first-round matches. World No. 53 Fognini broke serve six times as he defeated South African Kevin Anderson 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, while the No. 93-ranked Gonzalez notched his third ATP World Tour-level win of the season with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Romanian Victor Hanescu.

Gilles Simon: making every moment count

Obrazek

At this time last year, Gilles Simon’s mindset was in a world far away from the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

A day before outlasting Philipp Kohlschreiber in a five-set second-round encounter, Simon’s partner Carine gave birth to the couple’s first child, Timothée, back home in France on September 2. It came as a surprise because she wasn’t due for another month. The Frenchman proved winning isn’t everything, as he rushed home to be with his family after falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets two days later.

Now, with a year of fatherhood under his belt, Simon has resurged up the ATP World Tour rankings from outside the top 40 at the start of the year to No. 12 coming into the US Open, winning titles in Sydney and Hamburg and reaching the fourth round at the French Open.

USOpen.org sat down with the 26-year-old after he defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round on Friday. Simon reflected on the two matches he's played this week and his goals for the rest of the season.

USOpen.org: You’re back in the third round at Flushing Meadows but it hasn’t been easy, as you were pushed to five sets in your first-round match and went four sets today. How would you assess your performances thus far?
Gilles Simon: It was not wonderful in the first round. It was a very tough match. I was really tired and I couldn’t move like I wanted to. I had to run a lot and was almost cramping at the end of the match, so I was really happy to win it because I was feeling pretty bad on the court.

Today went better. I felt like I could play my game. It wasn’t fantastic as I missed some easy shots sometimes. But I moved better and played the right shots at the right time.

USOpen.org: Last year, after losing in the third round here in New York, you rushed home as your partner Carine gave birth to your son Timothée four weeks early. How quick have the past 12 months gone by for you?
Gilles Simon: It’s been going fast. We play the same tournament every year. Every time we come back and say, ‘man, it is one more year already.’ But I feel every year is important. I enjoy the time I’m spending on tour and just try to play the best I can. I have a good ranking, No. 12 in the world, am playing at a good level and am just trying to enjoy what I’ve done this year.

USOpen.org: Speaking of your ranking… you’ve risen from No. 41 to No. 12 the past nine months and seem to be regaining the form that saw you reach No. 6 in 2008. How tough was it to come back from injury and what’s helped you get back inside the top 15?
Gilles Simon: When I started to play again at Wimbledon last year, I wanted to be in the top 20 at that tournament this year and I managed to do it. I think that was the hardest part of coming back, because when you’re out injured for a while and come back, you’re no longer seeded at tournaments. You’re not as confident because you haven’t played and don’t know if your level will drop down and if you’ll still be a good player. So then when you start to win and the ranking gets better, it’s easier because you’re more confident in yourself knowing you can do it.

USOpen.org: Today is Timothée’s birthday. Do you and Carine have any special plans to celebrate the occasion, either here or back home in France after the US Open?
Gilles Simon: Unfortunately they are not here anymore… they are back in France. I’m afraid I’m going to miss every birthday. I already missed the birth (laughing). When I have them around at tournaments, I try to see him as much as I can. Sometimes it’s not possible and right now they’re not with me, so I’ll wait till I go back to France.

USOpen.org: You’re in contention to qualify for the Barclays World Tour Finals. What goals do you have for the rest of the season and how do you fancy your chances of qualifying for the year-end championships for the first time since 2008?
Gilles Simon: To make the World Tour Finals is always a very good thing, but when you’ve done it once, it’s not exactly the same motivation. I just want to improve, win some tournaments, some big events. That’s my goal… to win something big. I also hope to finish in the top 10. I don’t know if I will do it but I’m in a good position.

USOpen.org: How would Carine rate your diaper changing skills?
Gilles Simon: Haha. I’m good but the mother is far better than me!

Simon glad to manage the great escape in Bangkok

Obrazek

2009 winner Gilles Simon had a rugged return to one of his favorite tournaments as the Frenchman had to fight to escape with a victory in his first match in two years at the Thailand Open.

Simon had hoped to return for a trophy defense a year ago but was derailed by the premature birth of his son during the US Open. Instead, he took a wild card into nearby Metz and won that event.

This year, there was no stopping the world No. 13 from coming back to Asia. "I really like it here, it's one of my favorites," he said after pulling through over Taiwan's tough Yen-Hsun Lu 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

Simon knew he faced big trouble in his opening match and was glad to live the great escape. "I was down a set and a break and he had points for 5-2. It was an amazing match.

"His level was really high and I had the sensation that I was also playing well. I've played for three hours many times, it's always a possibility.

"I knew I had to play the maximum on every point against him," said the Frenchman. "I was almost on the plane back home at one point. I'm very happy to win this match."

Gilles Simon Q&A: The Patient PlayStationer

Obrazek

World No. 12 Gilles Simon has the opportunity to win the same ATP World Tour event on three occasions for the first time in his career, after the top Bucharest seed defeated Matthias Bachinger 7-5, 6-2 in the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy semi-finals Saturday.

As part of ATPWorldTour.com’s new Q&A series, Simon talks about his decision to return to the tournament after a four-year hiatus, his greatest strength on court and why he prefers PlayStation 3 to other video game consoles.

You’ve won 14 of the 15 matches you’ve played here. Where does this tournament rank on your list of favourite ATP World Tour stops?
It’s a very important tournament for me. It was my second title. It was also the first time I was able to defend a title. And maybe it will be the first tournament I win three times if I win the final tomorrow. I like the conditions here. It suits well with my game.

After winning back-to-back titles in 2007-2008, you took a four year break before returning to Bucharest. What made you decide to come back to the event?
Bucharest was in September before and was the only tournament on clay at this moment in the season. In 2007, I played because my best results at the time were on clay. And in 2008, I came because I wanted to defend my title. After that, it was easier for me to play on hard courts. And unfortunately, I couldn’t come here because there were two nice tournaments in the same week. One was in Bangkok, which I won and one was in Metz, which I also won. It was difficult to make the choice.

The past nine months, you’ve been within striking distance of the Top 10. How important is it for you to break back into this group?
The ranking depends on your results. I just try to focus on each tournament and win as many matches as possible. Then the ranking comes. As I was already in the Top 10, to be back there would be nice, but it won’t change my life. What I aim for is to be in the Top 5, as I was No. 6 in the world. I know that I have a lot of work to do to reach that ranking.

Nearly half of your titles have come on clay. What do you like about playing on the surface and on the contrary, what challenges does it present you?
On the clay, I think I can play my best tennis when I’m in good shape. I feel when I’m physically strong, it will be very hard for my opponent to hit a winner against me. The serve is less important, so it’s really perfect for my game. But unfortunately on clay, as soon as you are physically a little bit down or have an injury, then your level drops very fast and you can lose to anybody. That’s the hardest part of clay, being fit and ready.

Would you consider your tennis mind your greatest strength, given your ability to stay patient and then pull the trigger at the right time?
I don’t like to miss. That’s why sometimes I play too slowly. I feel like my strength is the ability to do everything on the court. Sometimes I am patient, but if I play a player who is more patient than me, I am also able to be aggressive. I often find the solution to the problem the opponent asks me. Sometimes, they are too good and I lose the match. But every time, I know I can play a different type of game. Even if I am patient in the first part of the match, I show my opponent it will be hard to get past me.

Why is PlayStation 3 better than its competition, such as the Xbox 360 and the Wii?
I always played the PlayStation because my favourite game is Final Fantasy. The license was first on PS1, then PS2 and now PS3. So that’s why it’s better than the others.

If someone was to stay in Paris for just one day, where would you recommend he/she visit?
Is there good weather?

Yes, let’s say that.
I think it’s not a good idea to come for just one day as you will miss everything. My main advice is to come for at least one w
