Dimitrov, Cilic Qualify For Nitto ATP Finals

Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic have both secured their places at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 12-19 November at The O2 in London. They will join World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, six-time champion Roger Federer, 20-year-old debutant Alexander Zverev and two-time qualifier Dominic Thiem in the elite eight-man field.
Dimitrov, the first Bulgarian to qualify for the prestigious season-ending tournament, and Cilic, who previously qualified in 2014 and 2016, clinched their berths today after fellow contender Sam Querrey lost in the first round of the Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna.

"Another amazing achievement for me," said Cilic. "Third time in four years to make it to London. That was one of my goals at the beginning of the season with my team and I’m glad that we have accomplished it."
In compiling the best season of his career, Dimitrov won his biggest title in August when he claimed his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati (d. Kyrgios). The Bulgarian also put together a 16-1 record en route to the Australian Open semi-finals (l. to Nadal) and a pair of ATP World Tour 250 titles. He defeated three Top 10 players — Dominic Thiem, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori — in the final three rounds of the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp. On home soil at the Garanti Koza Sofia Open, the 26-year-old lifted the trophy with victory over David Goffin in the final. Last week, he finished as runner-up to Juan Martin del Potro at the Intrum Stockholm Open.

Cilic claimed the ATP World Tour 250 crown at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open (d. Raonic) in April, and also reached two finals in London — one at Wimbledon (l. to Federer) and the other at the Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club (l. to Lopez). The same week that 29-year-old Cilic won in Istanbul, he also became the third Croatian to record at least 400 match wins (also Goran Ivanisevic, Ivan Ljubicic). Currently at a career-high World No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Cilic has won at least one ATP World Tour title for 10 consecutive years. His 17 career titles are the second-most for a Croatian behind Ivanisevic with 22 crowns.
With just two weeks left of the regular ATP World Tour season, Goffin and Pablo Carreno Busta, who are both within the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Race To London, are leading the battle to claim the last two spots in London and qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time.

In the doubles field, Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo, Henri Kontinen/John Peers, Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau, Jamie Murray/Bruno Soares, Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan, Ryan Harrison/Michael Venus and Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut have already secured their places in the eight-team field. One team spot is left up for grabs, which will be decided at next week’s Rolex Paris Masters, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.
The Nitto ATP Finals welcomes more than 250,000 fans to The O2 arena each year, as well as generating a global TV viewership of more than 100 million, as the ATP’s best eight singles players and doubles teams of the season compete over eight days at the biggest indoor tennis tournament in the world.

Marin Cilic: Time Is Now To Put The Past Away

Four months after an emotional appearance in his first Wimbledon final, Marin Cilic is back in London after qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third time. As Stuart Fraser of The Times writes, victory for Cilic this week would be a heartening tale.

One of the enduring images of this year’s Wimbledon men’s singles final is of Marin Cilic breaking down during a change of ends, with the Croatian sitting on his chair with his head buried under a towel. Those tears came around 45 minutes into the match when Cilic, trailing by a set and 0-3, and with two medics crouched in front of him, was hit by the realisation it wasn’t to be his day. That distress was borne more of frustration than of physical pain.

Now, it is hard enough to beat Roger Federer – who is considered to be the greatest grass-court player in history, and who would score a record eighth Wimbledon title that afternoon – when you are fully fit, never mind when a blistered foot is hampering your movement across the Centre Court grass. “It came to the point where I felt that my chances of winning were very slim,” Cilic recalls. “Considering the injury that I had, it just pushed me back emotionally and I felt in that moment, ‘That’s it, I cannot give my best in one of the most important matches of my career’. Just considering all the facts, it was little bit too tough for my mind.”

It was a rare display of emotion from someone who has always had a reserved manner on the court. While most of the crowd had come in the expectation of seeing Federer make history at the All England Club, they appreciated that Cilic needed their support in that moment. So as he stood up from his chair to continue play, many of the 15,000 spectators were also up on their feet. Four months later, Cilic is back in London, where he can expect a warm welcome. He has always enjoyed playing in the city, and that appreciation and affection for the British tennis public have only grown since such a collective show of kindness in the summer.

Cilic’s blisters have long gone, he is over the disappointment of losing a Wimbledon final, and much satisfaction can be taken from the season he has put together to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third time.

Finishing among the leading eight players is all the more impressive when you consider he made a slow start in the first three months of this year, including losing his first matches at the opening two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments of the season, in Indian Wells and Miami. It was on the clay that Cilic’s form finally took an upward curve. By defeating Milos Raonic, of Canada, in the final of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open, Cilic took at least one title on the ATP World Tour for the 10th consecutive year. With 17 titles, Goran Ivanisevic (22) is the only Croatian to have more. That same week, Cilic also became only the third player from his country, after Ivanisevic and Ivan Ljubicic, to win 400 or more matches. A run to the quarter-finals of Roland Garros was his best performance in 11 appearances.

With his confidence at a high, Cilic set himself up for the grass-court swing, for a surface on which he has always been a force, thanks to the powerful serve he can fire down from a height of 6’6”, and his atomic forehand. Here in London, Cilic came close to winning the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club for a second time to add to his 2012 triumph, but, despite holding a match point against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, he could not quite get across the finish line, and after two and a half hours eventually lost 10-8 in the deciding tie-break. Despite departing with no trophy, Cilic was at least comforted in the knowledge that he had only dropped his serve once all week.

This level of performance continued at Wimbledon, where Cilic, almost three years after winning the 2014 US Open, reached his second Grand Slam final. “I think that part of the year was the most consistent I have ever played during my whole career,” Cilic says. “In that stretch from the clay-court season to the end of the grass-court season, I found that great balance of playing really good tennis on a high level and still keeping it consistent match after match, week after week.”

Unfortunately, Cilic’s momentum was lost through sustaining an adductor injury. He did not hit a ball until two weeks before the US Open, and played no other tournaments leading into the last major of the season. “I was just a little bit unlucky to get the injury at that moment after Wimbledon, after such good form and playing such great tennis,” says Cilic, who lost in the third round in New York. “It pushed me maybe one step back in regaining my form and getting back to the court and finding the nice balance I had during the grass-court season.”

Cilic did eventually rediscover his mojo during the Asian swing last month.

Consecutive semi-final appearances at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo and the Shanghai Rolex Masters earned him a career-high position of No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. On Cilic’s two previous appearances at the season finale, in 2014 and 2016, he didn’t progress into the knock-out stages, but his return this week may well prove more fruitful if he can bring the high level of play he has shown recently.

A settled period with his coaching team of Jonas Bjorkman, the former World No. 4 who was hired in August last year, and Ivan Cinkus, who joined Cilic’s team in April 2015, has brought improvements to his game, particularly to his serve. “I am a little bit more consistent this year in serving performances. I’m winning quite a lot of service games and a lot of matches. I’m leaving the match either not broken or broken only once, so that’s something very valuable for me. Overall, when I’m playing well, I’m going to give myself a lot of chances on the returns. I’m keeping that pressure all the time on the guys, and it pays off in the end.”

If Cilic’s serve and forehand are in full flow at the Nitto ATP Finals, this week may well end with the trophy in his hands. Four months after his tears at SW19, victory in SE10 would be a heartening tale.

Recent Success & Experience: A Winning London Formula For Cilic?

Marin Cilic is no longer the fresh face at the Nitto ATP Finals. He’s not the out-of-the-blue Grand Slam champion trying to find his footing. He’s not the seventh seed who barely squeaked in, entering the tournament with a 12-46 record against the field.
The Croatian is the experienced world No. 5 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, appearing at The 02 for the third time and heading into the year-end finale playing some of the best tennis of his life.
The 29-year-old is ready to make his mark in London.
“The year has been extremely consistent for me. I played great tennis and found the key in my own game to play at a good level almost every single week,” Cilic said. “I had a lot of victories in the last six, seven months that have given me good confidence and obviously a good belief when I’m playing the top guys, which is very important here.”
On the surface, earning the fifth seed may not be jaw-dropping. But Cilic skipped the whole North American hard-court swing between Wimbledon and the US Open to recover from an adductor injury. The Croatian had played both ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in Cincinnati and Canada each year since 2014, leaving a possible 2,000 points on the table.
Yet Cilic bounced back after the US Open, advancing to the semi-finals at three of the four tournaments he played (Tokyo, Shanghai, Basel) before finishing his regular season off with a quarter-final showing in Paris. Reaching his second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon and winning the title in Istanbul doesn’t hurt the mindset, either.
“Overall I think it’s just slightly different, my mental approach this year than the previous two years that I was playing,” Cilic said. “I feel a little bit more confident. Obviously experience helps, I’ve already played twice here. I believe that I’m a bit more confident and I have good belief that I will deliver good tennis. I’m not putting myself under too much stress to have big expectations. I’m just trying to play day by day and use that to my own advantage.”
Playing in the year-end finale is now approaching normal for Cilic — at least more normal than it is for a majority of the field. The Croatian is one of three players in London competing in the event for at least the third time. The other two: No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer.
“When I played the first time it was quite tricky. I had a big victory at the US Open and then after that I was struggling a little bit with my shoulder injury so I wasn’t playing much,” Cilic said. “It was a little bit of a different expectation for me. I didn’t know how I’m going to perform and also I felt just maybe mentally a little bit drained from that big emotional victory.”
While the big-hitting right-hander has not had the most success at the Nitto ATP Finals — he earned his first win in two appearances in his final match of round-robin play last year (d. Nishikori) — he knows what the experience is like and how to approach it. Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, and Jack Sock are all making their debuts, while David Goffin appeared in one match last season as an alternate.
“There are always a few guys who are playing here for the first time,” Cilic said. “So that can be another advantage for me.”
But what it all comes down to is that this is another opportunity for Cilic. He can prove that he doesn’t just belong here, but that he can excel among the best, as well. While the Croatian climbed to a career-high of No. 4 in the world last month, he can realistically move up to No. 3 with a strong performance in the final tournament of the year.
“It’s a very important tournament for me,” Cilic said. “Even though it’s the end of the year, there’s a lot of points at stake and it could move me up the ranking or down the ranking so hopefully I can play quite well.”

Marin Cilić nie zdobył ani jednego punktu w dwóch pierwszych spotkaniach tegorocznej edycji Finałów ATP World Tour w Londynie, mimo prowadzenia 3:1 w trzecim secie zarówno w starciu z Alexandrem Zverevem, jak i Jackiem Sockiem.
- To, co się wydarzyło, jest frustrujące - powiedział Cilić. - W obu poprzednich spotkaniach wypracowałem sobie w trzecim secie przewagę, ale niestety nie potrafiłem jej wykorzystać. Jestem rozczarowany. Takie sytuacje są jednak częścią sportu. Przygotowując się do kolejnego pojedynku, będę chciał wszystko sobie poukładać, odświeżyć i znów zagrać dobrze.

Chorwat po raz trzeci w karierze wystąpił w zawodach kończących sezon i ponownie nie zdołał wyjść z grupy (bilans 1-7). Jedyne zwycięstwo odniósł rok temu w starciu z Keiem Nishikorim. W czwartek będzie chciał uniknąć sytuacji z 2014 roku, kiedy przegrał wszystkie mecze. Na jego drodze stanie Roger Federer.

- Różnicy można się doszukiwać w niewykorzystanych szansach. W starciach z czołowymi zawodnikami to są pojedyncze piłki. Postaram się być bardziej uparty. Nie tylko w kolejnym spotkaniu, ale i w przyszłym roku - dodał.

Pod wodzą Szweda Cilić ugruntował swoją pozycję w Top 10 światowego rankingu. Triumfator US Open 2014 wygrał turnieje w Cincinnati i Bazylei (2016) oraz Stambule (2017). Do tego był w finale dwóch imprez rozgrywanych na londyńskich trawnikach - w Queen's Clubie i w Wimbledonie. Björkman to były czwarty singlista świata, ale największe sukcesy odnosił w deblu, w którym wywalczył dziewięć wielkoszlemowych tytułów.

W sezonie 2017 Marin Cilić wygrał turniej w Stambule, zagrał w finale wielkoszlemowego Wimbledonu, a rozgrywki zakończył na szóstym miejscu w rankingu ATP. - To był mój pierwszy sezon, który zaczynałem, jak i zakończyłem w czołowej "10" rankingu ATP. Uznaję to za duży sukces. Chciałem wystąpić w Finałach ATP World Tour oraz zakończyć sezon w najlepszej "piątce". Pierwszy cel spełniłem. Jeśli chodzi o drugi, to awansowałem do Top 5, ale z powodu kilku porażek spadłem na niższą pozycję - mówił w rozmowie z portalem vecernji.hr.

Przed kilkoma tygodniami Chorwat zakończył współpracę z trenerem Jonasem Björkmanem. - Jonas pomógł mi w rozkwicie mojej gry. Za to jestem mu wdzięczny, ale muszę iść dalej. Z powodu swoich obowiązków Jonas nie był w stanie wypełniać swoich zobowiązań wobec mnie w takim stopniu, jak bym oczekiwał, i dlatego zdecydowałem się zakończyć tę współpracę. Jonas to świetny człowiek, ale chcę, by mój trener był zawsze przy mnie i pomagał mi się rozwijać - wyjaśniał.

Do nowego sezonu Cilić przygotowuje się z Ivanem Cinkusem. Jednocześnie nie ukrywa, że chciałby nawiązać współpracę z trenerem o dużej renomie. - Ivan to od wielu lat ważny członek mojego sztabu. On może mi pomóc, ale potrzebuję trenera, który da mi świeżość i będzie przekazywał kluczowe rady. Sprawa nowego szkoleniowca nie spędza mu snu z powiek, ale na pewno będę poszukiwał trenera wielkiego kalibru. Kogoś, kto ma doświadczenie i kto pomoże mi podnieść mój poziom.

Mieszkaniec Monte Carlo ma ambitne plany. - Z roku na rok przesuwam swoją granicę. Mam nadzieję, że w przyszłym sezonie także wykonam postęp. Chcę wejść do czołowej "trójki" rankingu, ale wiem, że konkurencja będzie znacznie większa ze względu na powroty Djokovicia, Murraya i Wawrinki. Ale to też dla mnie motywacja.

Myślę, że będzie grał w drużynie w Pucharze Davisa.
