AO2013 SWOT #3:Alexandr Dolgopolov

Alexandr Dolgopolov: Dolgopolov’s immense talent has been on display for years now, though it seems the 24-year-old Ukrainian is starting to pull together all his abilities. He was 34-25 in 2012, winning a title in Washington over the summer and making the finals at Valencia at the tail-end of the year.

Strengths: Apart from Roger Federer and Andy Murray, no one plays as much of an all-court, varied game on tour as Dolgopolov. The spins, chops, angles and differentiating speeds that Dolgopolov throws at his opponents can be disarming, while also possessing some top-notch strength on his forehand side. Couple his mixed game with quick feet and the Kiev native is one of the hardest players to hit through on court.

Weaknesses: Dolgopolov can get in trouble from the baseline, particularly on his backhand side. While his speed and mixed paces help him counter an opponent’s attack, he oftentimes is unable to finish a point from behind the baseline with raw power. A tendency to play from behind also gets “Dolgo” in trouble, dropping an opening set and having to battle back into the match.

Opportunities: Dolgopolov wowed crowds in Melbourne in 2011 with a quarterfinal run that included five-set wins over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and then-world No.4 Robin Soderling. He fell in the quarterfinals to Andy Murray that year, but after his five-set loss in the third round to Bernard Tomic last year, Dolgopolov could be primed for another run on the courts he loves at Melbourne Park. His 2011 quarterfinal marked his only appearance in the final eight in 17 tries at majors.

Threats: Dolgopolov continues to battle consistency. Case in point: He was a finalist in Valencia to close 2012 before losing in the first round of the Paris Masters to world No.75 Igor Sijsling. Dolgopolov must approach each match with the fervour of a final to get through the dangerous floaters. If he makes it into week two, he’s a threat to any top player- including the Big Four.

Craig Tiley, Australian Open tournament director:

“Dolgopolov makes you beat yourself. He’s got the consistency to pull off some upsets as he’s proved before.”

Nie było to tutaj podawane, ale Alex zatrudnił Fabrice'a Santoro na swojego trenera. Nieźle się dobrali.

ROYAL GUARD OPEN CHILE
Dolgopolov, Carreno Busta Enjoy Bike Fun In Vina Del Mar
Vina del Mar, Chile

Pablo Carreno Busta and Alexandr Dolgopolov
enjoyed their Sunday bike ride.

Alexandr Dolgopolov and Pablo Carreno Busta, the ATP’s Most Improved Player of the Year award recipient in 2013, took time out from their preparations for the Royal Guard Open Chile on Sunday to take a bicycle ride along part of the Vina del Mar coastline.

Dolgopolov said, “We rode on the bikes along the beach. The weather is nice every day, it’s sunny, no rain. I came from -24 degrees Celsius so it’s good to be here.” Carreno Busta admitted, “I’ve always liked the cities by the seaside. The ride was really nice and the views were beautiful.”

The tournament’s president Jaime Fillol joined the debutants at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament on the ride. Dolgopolov has been drawn to face Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round, while Carreno Busta meets Filippo Volandri.

Dolgopolov, who is currently No. 53 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, is looking forward to this month’s Latin American clay-court swing.

“It’s a good swing to maybe get some [Emirates ATP Rankings] points, to get some matches and to have a little bit of advantage when the European clay swing starts [in April],” said Dolgopolov. “We will see how it goes, there are a lot of clay court players here and I got a wild card so that is really nice.”

World No. 64 Carreno Busta, who will be attempting to record his first match win of the 2014 season this week, said, “I already played three tournaments on hard courts and well, the results were not the best, but I did feel good on the court – especially towards the end. I have to take it day-by-day, play well, train well, and the results will come for sure.”

After he won four ATP Challenger Tour and seven ITF Futures titles last year, 22-year-old Carreno Busta realises that replicating his success this year will be tricky.

“I think that it will be almost impossible to win the same amount of tournaments as last season,” said Carreno Busta. “The most important thing is to maintain my ranking, keep playing with the players that are in ATP World Tour tournaments – the best players – and learn from them.”

DOLGOPOLOV BEATS RAONIC TO REACH FIRST MASTERS 1000 SF

Cytuj:
Obrazek
Alexandr Dolgopolov reaches his first Masters 1000 semi-final.

Alexandr Dolgopolov continued his magical run at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating 10th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon in Indian Wells to reach his first semi-final at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.

The Ukrainian recorded his third straight victory over a seeded player, following his upsets of World No. 1 and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the third round and No. 13 seed Fabio Fognini in the fourth. He improved to a 6-2 mark against Top 20 opponents this season.

After falling behind 0-3 in the second set, the 28th-seeded Dolgopolov finally converted on his seventh break point of the set in the fifth game with a backhand winner. He broke Raonic again on his next opportunity to take a 4-3 lead and closed out the victory on serve after one hour and 18 minutes.

"I was quite fast today," said Dolgopolov. "I was really happy with that. And I was able to get more returns than usually you can against him. He serves really big and I knew I had to do that, and I'm quite pleased how I anticipated on his serve and have seen the toss of the ball and was really, really concentrated to get those serves back."

Raonic had 33 aces in his opening win over Edouard Roger-Vasselin, but came up with just four against Dolgopolov - just one more than his number of double-faults.

"I thought I did a lot of things well, as well," said Raonic. "I really was pushing myself, because I was hoping that if I forced myself to stay strong with an attitude that the game would come. I just wish I could have served better. But other than that, he did the right things at the right times right away from the start of the match. He was a factor of why I didn't serve as well as I would have liked as well."

The 25-year-old Dolgopolov will look to reach his second final of the season when he next faces the winner between four-time champion Roger Federer and South African Kevin Anderson, who play in the night session Thursday. Dolgopolov finished runner-up to Nadal last month at the Rio Open, an ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tournament.

"I played good for three weeks," he said. "I'm quite fresh. I felt good physically today. I'm confident enough to come out and play good tennis. Then who knows, you know? I beat a lot of good players around here, so I wouldn't see why not win more matches.

"I'll just come out, do my best, and of course it's going to be really tough because it's semis or finals. No bad players left and no players not in the top form now."

Dolgopolov, a former World No. 13, has already climbed 26 spots in the Emirates ATP Rankings this season and is projected to move an additional eight spots to No. 23 with his semi-final effort.

He is the first player from Ukraine to reach this stage at a Masters 1000 tournament since Andrei Medvedev won the Hamburg title in 1997.

Raonic was contesting just his second tournament of the season, having been sidelined since the Australian Open with an ankle injury.

"I think coming here, if anybody sort of offered me a signed piece of paper to say, Would you like to be in the quarter-finals this week, especially with what I have been struggling with, how much more I would have liked to have prepared for the event, I would have signed that sheet right away," he said. "I think that says enough."
