An unseeded Romanian has won the WHB Hungarian Open tennis tournament over the weekend.

The ATP tour tennis circuit returned to Hungary recently following more than a ten-year absence

Marius Copil dominated at the inaugural event in Budapest, not dropping a set en route to the title.

The Tecnifibre player defeated fourth seed Steve Darcis 6-4, 6-2 in Sunday's final, claiming his third ATP Challenger Tour title and first since 2013.

Challenger tennis returned to the Hungarian capital for the first time since 2005 and will make its ATP World Tour debut next year on red clay.

Basic, Copil Shock Seeds In Sofia

No. 129 reaches his second QF of the season at the Diema Xtra Sofia Open
Mirza Basic stunned No. 4 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 7-6(5) at the Diema Xtra Sofia Open to reach his second quarter-final of the season on Wednesday.

The No. 129, who reached the last eight at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open (l. Pella), broke serve in the 12th game of the first set to take a one-set lead and secured a crucial mini-break at 5/5 in the second set tie-break to upset the German after one hour and 41 minutes.

Kohlschreiber, who has captured one tour-level title in each of the past four seasons, remains winless in 2018 while Basic awaits the winner of Thursday’s second-round match between Maximilian Marterer and No. 7 seed Joao Sousa.

Germany’s Marterer continued his strong start to the season with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri. Marterer, who is targeting a Top 50 place in the year-end ATP Rankings, hit 13 aces to set up the second-round clash with seventh seed Joao Sousa.

Romania’s Marius Copil also produced an upset to beat No. 5 seed Robin Haase 7-6(5), 6-4 and book his place in the second round. The No. 93 defeated the Dutch No. 1, winning 88 per cent of points on serve, and will next face Slovenia’s Blaz Kavcic. The 30-year-old took just 78 minutes to beat Serbia’s Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-4.

Italy’s Andreas Seppi will meet third seed Gilles Muller for a place in the quarter-finals after dispatching of No. 92 Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4. Qualifier Jozef Kovalik came from 2-5 down in the third set and saved one match point to beat countryman Lukas Lacko 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 while Marcos Baghdatis recovered from an early first-set deficit to beat lucky loser Salvatore Caruso 7-6(3), 6-3.

Muller won six of the first seven points in the deciding set tie-break - including two aces - to move to within one win of his first ATP World Tour semi-final of 2018. Two years ago, at the inaugural tournament in Sofia, Muller reached the semi-finals (l. to Bautista Agut) and he will next prepare to challenge Romania’s Marius Copil, who swept past Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 6-2, 6-2 in 67 minutes.

ATP Sofia: pierwszy półfinał ATP.

In the bottom half of the draw, Romania’s Marius Copil advanced to the first ATP World Tour semi-final of his career by remaining composed in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over third seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. One break in the ninth game of each set proved to be enough for Copil, who struck 13 aces and lost eight of his first-service points in the 80-minute encounter. He’d previously lost five quarter-finals and now faces Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik.

ATP Sofia: pierwszy finał ATP!

Basic will play Romania’s Marius Copil, who also reached the first tour-level final of his career by beating qualifier Jozef Kovalik 6-4, 6-2.

“I was just thinking to do my best,” said Copil, who fell in the first five ATP World Tour quarter-finals of his career. “I was very focused, I was in the present and this helped me to make the match more clear."

It took Copil six attempts to advance to his ATP World Tour first semi-final, which he did by defeating third seed Gilles Muller on Friday. But it only took the 27-year-old one opportunity to take it a step further, ousting an opponent in Kovalik who was also competing in his first semi-final. The Romanian needed just 76 minutes to move on to his maiden championship match.

“It’s something I was dreaming about since the first day I started playing tennis," Copil said of reaching his maiden final. "Watching the guys play major finals and being with them in the locker room made me want to play finals... I hope that it’s going to go well tomorrow and that it won’t be the last one."

Copil is projected to match his career-high ATP Ranking of No. 74 by virtue of reaching the final, and can soar further if he beats Basic.

The 27-year-old dropped just one of 25 points behind his first serve in his victory. The Romanian constantly threatened his 25-year-old opponent’s serve as well, earning a total of six break points across six of Kovalik’s service games, converting on three of those opportunities.
