“It was a big tie-break for me, I played well,” Gasquet said. “It was very tough. It was so close [and] it was very difficult. I knew he was a good player, so I fought a lot and I am happy to win.”

QATAR EXXONMOBIL OPEN 2013
Gasquet Cools Off Davydenko For Doha Title
Doha, Qatar

Obrazek
Richard Gasquet won his eighth ATP World Tour title.

World No. 10 Richard Gasquet overcame a set and a break deficit to defeat Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open final on Saturday in Doha.

“I'm really happy with the way I played and fought,” said Gasquet. “He was playing fast in the first set. I just try to keep focused and to fight a lot, and I did it. I’m really happy with the way I won. It's important for me to win the final.”

The victory marks Gasquet’s eighth ATP World Tour title and his third hard-court triumph. He is the fourth Frenchman to win the title, joining Fabrice Santoro (2000), Nicolas Escude (2004) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2012). He earns $180,600 and 250 Emirates ATP Ranking points.

Davydenko, the 2010 champion, looked to be in command, holding a 6-3, 4-2 lead and two break points. But Gasquet managed to recover and Davydenko was then broken for the first time in the tournament. After levelling the match, the second-seeded Gasquet went on to break the Russian three times in the final set to prevail in two and a half hours. He improved to 4-2 against Davydenko in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

“I think I was a little bit fresher than him in the third set, but he was playing so fast [that] he could break me in the second game in the third [set], so [anything] could happen,” Gasquet said. “He could win, too. We were so close together, so it was a big match, a big fight.”

The 31-year-old Davydenko was bidding to win his first title since 2011, when he was victorious at the BMW Open in Munich. He dropped to a 21-7 record in tour-level finals. The former World No. 3 upset fourth seed Mikhail Youzhny and fifth-ranked David Ferrer en route to the title match.

“I tried to concentrate, but I did some mistakes and already it was tough,” said Davydenko. “The third set, again trying, but my legs [were} not moving good. He played very well. Physically, he [was] much better.”

AO SWOT #13 Richard Gasquet

An impressive season saw Gasquet finish inside the top 10 for the first time in five years, reach the fourth round at every Grand Slam event for the first time in his career, win his first title in two years and rake in more than $1.5 million in prizemoney.

Strengths: One of the most technically gifted and talented players in the game, Gasquet owns every shot in the book. He’s most famous for his backhand, a sensational single-hander that he’s equally comfortable slicing, looping with topspin and ripping flat for electrifying winners. But that’s backed up with a stinging forehand, excellent court coverage and great hands – the Frenchman really is the complete package.

Weaknesses: It’s pretty much all mental when it comes to Gasquet. For someone of his shotmaking prowess, just one trip beyond the fourth round of a major (Wimbledon 2007 semifinals) in 33 starts is hugely disappointing. He simply hasn’t been able to produce his best tennis when the spotlight is at its brightest. Tactically, Gasquet’s propensity to retreat metres behind the baseline forces him to work unnecessarily hard during rallies and leaves him vulnerable to angled shots and short balls.

Opportunities: Beginning the season ranked No.19, Gasquet now sits at No.10, just shy of his career-best No.7 ranking of 2007. Since 2011, Gasquet has developed an impressive consistency, routinely beating who he should beat (in terms of rankings) and becoming a stronger presence at the majors. This should imbue him with confidence going into 2013, a solid foundation for him to take his game to the next level and post some results that better represent his vast talents.

Threats: In recent years it’s generally taken a big name to eliminate the Frenchman at Melbourne Park. But therein lies the problem – it’s a recurring trend. In the past two seasons, Gasquet has gone 7-21 against top 10 opponents, and when facing these players at the majors, it’s rarely been close. He needs to develop the belief that he can match it with – and beat – the big guns if he aims to contend for Grand Slam titles.

Scott Draper, former world No.42 and Tennis Australia’ Developmental Tennis Manager

“Gasquet is great to watch and has one of the best single-handers ever. But two weeks and seven matches to win a Slam has always been the question mark for Richard – can he sustain a high level for that period of time? He hasn't proven this so far in his career.”

Gasquet takes down Montanes

Obrazek

For so long a man of the last 16, France’s eternal up-and-comer Richard Gasquet is determined to prove a lone Wimbledon semifinal finish five and a half years ago is no flash in the pan after his first-up 7-5 6-2 6-1 win over Albert Montanes on Tuesday.

The ninth-seeded Frenchman ended last season with a full set of fourth-round finishes at the majors, where his run stopped. In fact, Gasquet has advanced to the quarters or beyond just once of 14 times.

Still, it is a record his first round journeyman opponent would envy. The 32-year-old Montanes ended the day with his seventh straight first round loss at the Slams, having failed to win a match since a career-best fourth round showing at Roland Garros in 2011.

Gasquet, 26, had won all four previous matches against the Spaniard, including a four set first round win at the US Open last year.

In his 11 prior Australian Open appearances, Montanes had only made it past the first round three times. He briefly bucked the trend when he broke Gasquet early in the match, a forehand down the line catching the tape and trickling over for 3-2.

But that was all the chance he got. With Montanes serving for the set, Gasquet fought back from 30-0 down to break with a finely struck crosscourt forehand winner before holding for 6-5.

Gasquet didn’t let up from there, stopping only to regrip his unorthodox half-gripped racquet on the changeover. Gasquet closed the opening set 7-5 with a Montanes double fault donation.

From there the Frenchman’s confidence soared. He took complete control of the match, dropping just three games in the next two sets to book a second round meeting with Colombian Alejandro Falla after one hour and 36 minutes.

It was the quick finish Gasquet needed after his four and a half hour wait for the brutal all-Australian match between James Duckworth and Ben Mitchell.

“It was very long. It was tough for me to wait ... but [the crowd was] very nice. It’s always nice here.”

Nice indeed. That’s Gasquet five wins, Montanes zero.

Wywiad po zwycięstwie w 3. rundzie AO 2013
Q. How did you find that match for yourself?
RICHARD GASQUET: I think I start very bad. I played not good at the start of the match. He was starting good, the condition was fast, so it was a bit difficult for me, especially with the wind.
I feel not good in my forehand, and same with my backhand. A lot of tension. I was losing 6 3, 3 1 with a break point, so it could be very difficult for me if he's winning two sets zero.
Then I fight and I return better. The third set was the key of the match, and I think in the fourth he was a little bit tired. But I fight as much as I could, and played well. At the end of the match I play better.

Q. What can you say about your opponent? Is he a player to watch in the future?
RICHARD GASQUET: I think he's a good player, but he's a good player. He's in the third round, so for sure he's tough to beat.

Gasquet Captures Second Title Of 2013
Obrazek

Richard Gasquet became the first two-time ATP World Tour titlist of the season on Sunday.

The third seed improved his ATP World Tour-best match record to 14-1 in 2013 with a victory 6-2, 6-3 over fellow Frenchman and eighth seed Benoit Paire in the Open Sud de France final, which lasted 69 minutes.

“I feel very happy and relieved to win here in Montpellier in front of my friends and family. Since the tournament has been here, it’s been an objective to lift the trophy. I was really disappointed last year when I lost in the quarter-finals. Defeating Gael [Monfils] in a difficult match earlier this week put me in the right direction towards the title.

“I realise this is my best season start ever and I just want to keep going and stay healthy. I am leaving tomorrow to Rotterdam, then Marseille, which is also an important tournament in France for me.”

Gasquet, who also won the Qatar ExxonMobil Open title (d. Davydenko) last month, improved to a 9-10 record in title matches. He received €74,000 and 250 Emirates ATP Ranking points. Paire, now 0-2 in finals, earned €39,000 and 150 Emirates ATP Ranking points.

Gasquet got off to a strong start, breaking Paire in the first and seventh games. The World No. 10 dropped just two of his service points in the 23-minute set. In the second set, there were three straight breaks of serve. Gasquet could not convert one match point on Paire’s serve at 3-5, advantage, but he did so at the second time of asking.

“The circumstances here are totally different for me, from the rest of the weeks on the tour, because I sleep at home in Bezier and I drive back and forth every day [40 minutes away]," said Gasquet. "It’s a totally different feeling than lifting a trophy in a different country far away. Also, I know and meet so many people I used to play with when I was younger. I feel I have played against the entire stadium!"

Gasquet won three three-set matches against Gael Monfils, Julien Benneteau and Jarkko Nieminen en route to his 19th final this week. This week, he had his serve broken 10 times and hit 28 aces in total.

“It’s a positive week overall for me,” said Paire. “I am a bit disappointed about today’s performance but Richard is a very strong player, with a very unique style, and there was nothing I could do today. I felt a bit stressed out before the final, due to the special circumstances of the match, but these are all positive experiences and I am learning a lot from them. I am very happy to have reached the final, I could have lost against Steve Darcis if it wasn’t for a miraculous let ball on the match point against me.

“It’s nice that it has happened here in Montpellier in front of my parents, who don’t often get to see me play. I grew up not far away from here and used to play all the small tournaments around here. I know I have improved a lot in my attitude and it was important this week to show my parents I am no longer the Benoit who goes crazy and breaks racquets. I really needed them to see how I have changed and I need to keep going. I feel I am on the right track if I stay calm and focused.”
