The 28-year-old Frenchman has been sidelined since then with a back injury. He is 10-4 this season, winning his 11th career ATP World Tour title in Montpellier and reaching QFs in Doha and Dubai. Gasquet has enjoyed success in Portugal, reaching the final in Oeiras in 2007 (l. to Djokovic) and 2012 (l. to del Potro).

Gasquet Upends Kyrgios For Estoril Crown

Richard Gasquet exacted revenge on Nick Kyrgios on Sunday, turning aside the Australian young gun 6-3, 6-2 to claim the inaugural Millennium Estoril Open.

In their first meeting since Kyrgios saved a memorable nine match points in a thrilling Wimbledon second round upset last year, Gasquet held his nerve on the Portuguese clay in capturing his 12th ATP World Tour crown. The Frenchman, who won his third clay-court title, takes home €80,000 and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

"I am really happy with the victory," said Gasquet. "Yesterday it went three sets and today I was more confident and started better. To feel no pain it's a good thing for me.

"I needed to play a good clay-court match, to make him run. He's a very good player, very powerful with a big forehand and big serve."

Fifth seed Gasquet needed a mere 65 minutes to earn the victory, grabbing a break of serve in the sixth game of the first set and streaking to a double-break lead to open the second. He fired four aces, won an impressive 94 per cent of first serve points (30/32) and saved all three break points faced.

Gasquet moved into second place on the Open Era titles list among Frenchmen, tying Gilles Simon with 12. Yannick Noah is in first with 23 singles trophies. The World No. 28 was appearing in his first tournament since retiring from his opening match at the BNP Paribas Open two months ago with a back injury. He is 15-4 this year, having also emerged victorious on the indoor hard courts of Montpellier.

Kyrgios was attempting to become the fourth player this year to capture his first career ATP World Tour title, along with Jiri Vesely (Auckland), Victor Estrella Burgos (Quito) and Jack Sock (Houston). He was also trying to become the first 20 year old to triumph on the ATP World Tour since countryman Bernard Tomic in Sydney 2013.

"Playing in my first final, there was definitely a bit of pressure out there," said Kyrgios. "I thought I had fun out there today as well. I lost, but that's why he's a world-class player. He was way too good for me and I need to get better.

"My serve was getting me through matches all week and today I don't feel I served well. I was pleased with the way I was hitting the ball, but I didn't take my opportunities."

Gasquet jest krytykowany w swojej ojczyźnie za to, że mieszka w Szwajcarii ze względów podatkowych. - Większość francuskich tenisistów mieszka w Szwajcarii, a do Francji wraca dopiero po zakończeniu karier. To normalne, więc nie rozumiem, dlaczego tak często poruszany jest ten temat odnośnie mojej osoby. Jednak nie przeszkadza mi to, bo jest to ściśle związane z polityką. Ja do końca życia będę udzielał poparcia Nicolasowi Sarkozy'emu i zawsze będę na niego głosował - stwierdził.

W 2009 roku tenisista z Béziers został zawieszony, ponieważ w jego organizmie wykryto śladowe ilości kokainy. Frenchman returns to Wimbledon semi-finals for first time in eight years
Richard Gasquet battled to defeat Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 on Wednesday at The Championships, preventing a Grand Slam rematch between the reigning Roland Garros champion and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
Gasquet had lost an 8-6 fifth set to Wawrinka in their most recent meeting two years ago at Roland Garros, but refused to suffer the same fate despite failing to serve out the match at 5-3 in the decisive set and being a break point down at 9-all.
"Even if I lost this important game at 5-3, I kept fighting a lot," he said. "It was important because I know it's a great match, playing the winner of Roland Garros in a quarter-final of a Grand Slam, so I need to keep focus, to stay focused, and to fight. Of course, it's a very nice victory for me to win against him 11-9 in the fifth. It's great."

The 29-year-old Gasquet previously reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2007, and lost to eventual champion and then-World No. 1 Roger Federer in straight sets.
"I'm proud because there are big players in the semis," he said. "I'm the worst when you see Federer, Djokovic and [Andy] Murray and me (smiling). There is something, I want to enjoy it."
He will look to snap a nine-match losing streak against Djokovic when the pair face off on grass for the first time Friday. Gasquet's lone win in 12 FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings against the Serbian came in round-robin action at the 2007 season-ending championships in Shanghai.
Wawrinka, making his 11th Wimbledon appearance, was attempting to become the second Swiss man in tournament history to reach the semi-finals. He dropped his first set of the fortnight as he committed 14 unforced errors to Gasquet's four in the 31-minute opener. The 21st-seeded Frenchman hit a high proportion of serves into court.
Gasquet fell behind 0-3 to start the second set, but recovered the break in the fifth game. After losing just one point on serve over his next two service games, he struggled to hold at 4-5, committing errors to give Wawrinka set point chances. He saved two, before losing the set with a double fault.
Wawrinka broke Gasquet again early in the third, and lost a total of five points on serve as he clinched the set in 29 minutes. Thirty minutes later, the match was level once again. As Gasquet had done two sets earlier, Wawrinka double-faulted on his opponent's set point chance, sending the match to a fifth set.
Gasquet saved a break point chance to start the decider, and then claimed a crucial break to go up 5-3 as he rushed to the net and put away a forehand winner on his second break opportunity. He was unable to serve out the win as Wawrinka immediately broke back.
The Swiss earned the next break point chance at 9-9, 30/40, but could not deliver. He made a trio of errors in the next game to bring up triple match point for Gasquet, and the Frenchman converted on his third opportunity to seal victory after three hours and 28 minutes. Gasquet fell to the floor in celebration as he booked his return to the semi-finals.
He improved to a 10-13 mark in matches decided in a fifth set, while Wawrinka fell to 21-18.

Q. How do you sum up that performance?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I'm really happy with the way I played, especially to win on Centre Court. My first time I'm winning on that court, so it's a great feeling for me. To win in three sets against Dimitrov, it's a big match.

Q. You held serve throughout the match. That must have added confidence, as well.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, of course. I'm feeling confident now, especially winning in three sets on Centre Court against a guy like Dimitrov. It's a great performance for me. I'm fresh for Monday.

Q. Your next match is against Nick. You played him last year. Didn't go your way. Can you reflect on that match and how different do you feel today compared to last year?

RICHARD GASQUET: It was an incredible match. Very tough because I had nine match points and I couldn't do it, so it was a big match. Of course it was tough to lose. He played incredible.

Of course after that he won Nadal. It was a big thing for everybody. Of course it's revenge. I played him this year in final in Estoril but it was on clay. It's much different.

Of course last year, even if I lost, it was a match we never forget, me and him. And for sure because it was his first match he won against a good player, I was top 10, and me, when you are losing with nine match points it's very difficult.

Q. Was it difficult to get over it? Did it stay in your mind for a while?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, it's tennis. Life goes on after that. It's not incredible. You have many tournaments.

But of course it was a tough match. When you are with nine match points, it's always difficult to forget.

Q. He talks a lot during matches and engages the crowd. He's is a different kind of player. Is it easy for you to stay focused when you're playing someone like that?

RICHARD GASQUET: I have no problem with that. I think it's great for the game. He has a good personality. He's fun to watch on the court. He's nice off the court. That's the most important. He respects the players off the court.

He's always talking in the locker room. I think he's a nice guy. On and off the court he's a good player for tennis.

Q. What is key for you to do against him in the next match? He's improved quite a bit since you played him.

RICHARD GASQUET: Most important is return of serve. He has one of the best serves in the world. He has a big forehand. He's a tough opponent because he has such a great serve. And to return him on grass, it's very difficult. That's why he's one of the best players on this court.


Q. You have beaten Grigor five times now. Why do you think you play so well against him?He won Raonic today. I didn't see the match, but I imagine he played and served incredible.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it's a good record, but I don't know exactly why I'm playing well against him. Maybe next time I will lose. You never know what can happen.

But of course I played him many times. I played good matches, especially here on the Centre Court, and it was a big match for us, so it's a great performance for me. I'm really happy with the way I played.

RICHARD GASQUET: To be honest, a little bit, yes (smiling). Yeah, a little bit, it's true. I throw the racquet. It's true, I broke one.

Yeah, a little bit. Because that one was on my serve. Last year I had nine on his serve. The first one was on my serve. Yeah, he did great shots in this tiebreak. I couldn't finish, 7 6 for him.

Then in the fourth set, he had two set points at 6 4, and he did mistakes. He serve incredible in this tiebreak again. It could be 7 6 again, could be a fifth set.

Yeah, it could be a nightmare for me again. I'm happy to finish in four.

Q. What is the general experience like playing against Nick Kyrgios? I couldn't be sure if he was arguing with you, the fans. Must be a crazy experience to be at the other end of the court?

RICHARD GASQUET: To play against him?

Q. Yes.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, but it's okay for me. I didn't see that things, when he talked to the crowd, talked to me, if he didn't talk to me or something.

To be honest, I have no problem with that. The problem I had, yeah, he served well. Even if he's doing some mistakes, he can stay in the match with his serve.

Yeah, for me, sometimes is different on the court, yeah, than other players. Is possible.

Not big things. Nothing crazy. He's talking to the crowd, yeah, a little bit.

Q. There was a moment in the second set where he appeared to give up on the service game. Did you notice that? What did you make of that?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, he was a little bit angry, a little bit frustrated, I saw that. Yeah, but I knew in the third set, it could be a different game.

Sometime it happen. He's not the only one to did it. Even the best player in the world did it in the past.

It's true, he give me a little bit this set. But I knew actually it wouldn't be the same in the third and fourth. But he played much better. He's a fighter. After that he fought a lot.

Of course, I don't know what happened. He was a little bit frustrated, but...

Q. Is it hard to concentrate when a player does that?

RICHARD GASQUET: It's good when the opponent is not playing good, is doing some mistakes. Is good for me. I have nothing to complain about it.

I knew it shouldn't be the same in the third. He played much better. So I'm happy to finish in four set because I saw little bit last year, same court, same thing. It's good for me to close that match.

Q. Do you think he was playing under par which helped you to win or did you think you had to raise your game in order to win the match?

RICHARD GASQUET: I start well, the match. The first set was open. He could win that one. Sure, in the second one, he did many mistakes. Then he was a little bit better than me in the third. He broke me. In the start of the fourth set, the same, he was leading. Yeah, he can win that match, of course.

It was a close match, yeah. He was serving incredible in the tiebreak, doing three aces. Everything could happen after that. So I'm happy because he did some, again, two double fault to close the match. It was nice for me.

Q. What's he like away from the courts? Is he a player that other players like and are friendly with or is he a bit of a loner that keeps to himself?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, no, it's a nice guy. I told it before the match. He's a very nice guy. Always talking to everybody.

So, no, it's a good guy. I have nothing to complain about it.

Even today. He's talking sometimes to the crowd, umpire or something.

But me, I broke one racquet, so the same.

Q. You're being very generous about him before the match. Do you still feel the same about him as an opponent?

RICHARD GASQUET: Of course.

Q. Any gamesmanship?

RICHARD GASQUET: I have nothing to complain in the match. It was okay. It was okay on me. I have nothing to tell about it.

Is true, he likes the show, of course. Everybody can see that. But I still think it's good to have some players like that on the circuit. Sometimes people are talking because the players are boring or something. Now we have someone who is doing different things.

I think is good for us.

Q. You're back in the quarters after many years. How does it feel to be back? Does it help that you managed to get through a situation you didn't succeed in last year?

Does that give you any extra confidence?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I'm playing great. I beat Dimitrov third round on Centre Court. Winning Nick today. Last year I lost.
I'm very happy to be back in quarterfinals. I lost many times in a Grand Slam in a fourth round. It's very good for me to be here in quarterfinal. Now we will see what will happen. I am feeling good.


Q. Do you think smashing that racquet helped you win today?

RICHARD GASQUET: It's possible, yeah. Maybe I will have a fine.

Q. Worth it, though?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah. I felt better after that, yeah. I was very frustrated. Last year I had nine. 11 match points in a row. I think you can understand if I am frustrated. Everybody can understand why I was.

Q. What do you think was the difference today between you and Stan?

RICHARD GASQUET: Close match. He could win that match. I think the difference, yeah, he was leading me two sets to one, then I try to tell myself to fight better because I did a bad serve set. I didn't want to lose in the fourth doing nothing.

Of course, I had to fight because, Stan, he is one of the best player in the world. I was leading 6 4, 5 3. Then it was tough for me to lose that game because I could reach the semifinal after that. It was very difficult for me to lose that serve at 5 3 in the fifth.

Then I kept fighting. That made the difference because I was able to fight. Even if I lost that game, he took a lot of confidence after that.

Then I play a very good game at 10 9 to finish the match. I had a lot of emotion, a lot of feeling in that match. It was my best victory for me.

Q. You showed a lot of mental toughness. You looked very confident. Where did that stem from?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, of course, I tried to fight. Even if I lost, as I said, this important game at 5 3, I kept fighting a lot. It was important because I know it's a great match. Playing the winner of Roland Garros on quarterfinal in a Grand Slam. So I need to keep focus, to stay focus, and to fight.

Of course, it's a very nice victory for me to win against him 11 9 in the fifth. It's great.

Q. Can you compare this match with your previous meeting with him in Roland Garros where you lost 8-6?

RICHARD GASQUET: It was quite the same match, of course. On his side, it was a tiny one, he won. It's a revenge for me a little bit.

But it was a tough match. He's serving great. He's a big fighter. He's playing very, very good. He has a lot of confidence.

Of course, it's great to win, come back here in semis eight years later. After 2007, it's a long time.

Q. Can you say a little bit more about when you say it was an emotional victory? Can you say why it was so particularly emotional?

RICHARD GASQUET: Because there is a lot of things. Because it's Stan, he won in Paris. You know, I'm French. I know what it means to win that tournament. It's a quarterfinal in the biggest tournament in the world. I won 11 9. I was leading 5 3 in the fifth.

I fight. I fight a lot. To win that match, it's very important to me.

Q. Compared to 2007, in what way are you a different player and a different person now?

RICHARD GASQUET: Older, for sure. Eight years more. I'm 29 now. I was 21. Yeah, I have more experience. I know what it means to be in semis. It's a long time I didn't do it.

Of course, I'm proud because there are big players in semis. I'm the worst when you see Federer, Djokovic and Murray and me (smiling). There is something, I want to enjoy it.

Q. What is the key for you on Friday to have chances against the world No. 1?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, to play a big game, to be aggressive, try to be very aggressive. I played him in Paris. I tried to control the game. Of course, he was playing much better than me. I couldn't do many games in that match. I don't remember exactly the score, but it was tough.

So I want to enjoy it, to play a better match than I did in Paris. It's important for me to think I can win this match. That's the most important. To go on the court and think you can win, it's something I need to do it on my mental part, to be there to win.


Q. In the previous semifinals you played Federer, then Nadal, now Djokovic. What can you say about Djokovic? What will be your game plan?

RICHARD GASQUET: Of course, it's incredible player to face in semis to be in Grand Slam final. You need to win these guys in semis. Of course, I'm there. I want to enjoy that moment and to try to reach the final, of course.

Novak is the favorite. Everybody knows that. But I want to take my chance and we will see what will happen.

Q. You won a lot of new fans out there on Centre Court. They fell in love with your beautiful backhand. Is that any consolation at all?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I tried to do my best. I did a good first set. I did some great backhand.
But, of course, I would like to do a little bit better then after that. I tried to be aggressive. I try my best. I did a good match. It was tough to do better. Sometimes I did mistakes in the tiebreak, of course. Some backhand I could put on the court.
It was 2 All, then it was 7 2 very fast after that. It wasn't good. He never miss on some returns. He serves well. That's why he's No. 1 in the world.

Q. When you saw Novak seemingly have a bit of an injury, did that give you a bit of a lift? What was going through your mind at that stage?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, it was nothing crazy because he didn't take the timeout, three minutes. He just take the changeover. It was nothing serious, I hope, for him.

Q. The tiebreak, was that the key to the match?

RICHARD GASQUET: It's better winning the first set. I could take confidence after that. It's tough when you are losing to the No. 1, 7 6. Then he played better.
So, yeah, the tiebreak was important. But it's just one set, it's not all the match after that even if I'm winning this tiebreak. It can be another match, but it's not everything.

Q. It felt like you were the better player in the first set. Did you feel that, too?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, from the baseline I was playing great. I was playing fast. Going to the net with a lot of confidence.
But the key, yeah, he serves better than me, returns better than me. Then when you have these two shots on grass court, it make the difference, yeah.

Q. It's been a good tournament for you.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, of course, it's been a great tournament for me. To lose against Novak in semifinal, it's very nice for me. I did my best. I'm really happy the way I played and the way I finished the tournament.

Q. Your grass court season is not over yet.

RICHARD GASQUET: No, of course. We are staying to go to Queen's Club. Of course it's important competition for us, for France. So, of course, I want to recover a little bit, to be ready for next week.

Q. If Murray wins and plays Djokovic, who do you think will win?

RICHARD GASQUET: It's very difficult to say.

Q. Who should I put my money on?

RICHARD GASQUET: Really, to be honest, I really don't know. Even me, if I have to put money, I don't really know to put. It's 50/50 for me. Everybody can win.


Q. What is the single most difficult thing when you're facing Novak?

RICHARD GASQUET: His return. His return. That's the best because he never miss. Never miss a return. You all the time serve, you serve. The ball is always on your side again. It's very difficult. You never make so many aces.
He doesn't make unforced error. Even from the baseline he's playing fast with a lot of aggressivity. He take the ball early.
Yeah, that's why it's tough.

When it came to analysing his semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic, Richard Gasquet highlighted two weapons that had proved his undoing: the World No. 1’s serve and return.
Gasquet had gone toe-to-toe with the defending Wimbledon champion in the first set, but in the deciding tie-break, the Serb raised his level and Gasquet never recovered. A swift service break at the start of the second set firmly steered the momentum in Djokovic’s favour and he kept the pressure on Gasquet until the very last point.
“The key was he serves better than me and returns better than me,” said Gasquet, who was through to the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time since 2007. “When you have these two shots on a grass court, it makes the difference.
“His return is the best because he never misses. You all the time serve, you serve. The ball is always on your side again. It's very difficult. You never make many aces. He doesn't make unforced errors. Even from the baseline, he's playing fast with a lot of aggressiveness. He takes the ball early. That's why it's tough.”
Indeed, the first-set tie-break did prove pivotal as a turning point in the match. The rifled backhands that had painted the line during the first 12 games just missed at the clutch moments and, as Gasquet lamented, it was the only opportunity Djokovic needed to seize control.
“I tried to do my best,” said the 29-year-old Gasquet. “I did a good first set. I hit some great backhands. But, of course, I would like to do a little bit better then after that. I tried to be aggressive. But it was tough to do better. I did make some mistakes in the tie-break, of course. Some backhands I could have put in the court. It was 2/2, then it was 7/2 very fast after that.
“It wasn't good. He never misses on some returns. He serves well. That's why he's No. 1 in the world.”
Despite the disappointment of defeat, losing to the Serb for the 12th time in 13 meetings, Gasquet leaves the All England Club pleased with the run he made, that saw him beat Grigor Dimitrov and Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka.
“It's been a great tournament for me,” said Gasquet. “To lose against Novak in the semi-finals, it's very nice for me. I did my best. I'm really happy the way I played and the way I finished the tournament.”

Q. Can you talk us through that shot around the net and the moment you had with Bernie afterwards?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I think it was the best shot of the match for sure. When I saw, when he put it on the net, I saw it, I saw could do it, and of course it's a lucky shot because if it's not touching the net I can't do that. Of course it's an incredible shot, so I'm very happy with it. It's very funny for me. The crowd loved it. That's very nice.

Q. When was the last time or had you ever had a fist pump for your opponent during the match?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, I don't think so. I think I never did it. Bernard is a great friend of mine, so I think I can do it with him. You don't do it with guys you don't like. With him, he's a great friend.

Q. A quick analysis of the match and why you think you won.
RICHARD GASQUET: I start bad. I was not feeling confident on the court. He was playing great.

I think the second set was really important for my confidence. I start to return better, serve much better than the start of the match. I did the third set. Then the fourth set, I saved many breakpoint. Then I did mine.

The difference, I finish 6-1. It was a great match for me and a big victory.

Q. You had a couple tough matches in the first round and now tonight. What kind of a factor is fatigue at this stage of the tournament? Do you feel tired now?
RICHARD GASQUET: No, it's okay. I'm feeling good. It wasn't humid tonight, not so hot. The court was really fast. We didn't do many rallies. Of course, I'm a little bit tired. In two days I will be fresh, no problem.
