Frenchman Richard Gasquet arrives in Perth ahead of Hopman Cup



FRENCHMAN Richard Gasquet had his first hit-up in Perth today ahead of a summer campaign he believes will return him to the world's elite.

Gasquet took to the court with local world No.86 Matt Ebden at the State Tennis Centre in Burswood as they prepared for their respective summers, with Gasquet's beginning on Saturday at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

Gasquet blasted his way to a career-high world No.7 in 2007 off the back of the hardcourt title in Mumbai, a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon and reaching the Round of 16 at the Australian Open.

The right-hander's end of year ranking gradually slipped from there to bottom out at 52 in 2009, a year in which he was hampered by a shoulder injury and, most damaging, a false positive test for cocaine that sidelined him for months.

The 25-year-old has since rebuilt his charge to currently sit at No.19, with a return to the top 10 in sight.

"I will try and break into the top 10, I did it some years ago and I'm not far this year too," Gasquet said. "I think I will be able to do it this year in 2012."

"I've never played here (Perth), it's good to practice, it's good to prepare and to get ready for Melbourne. I played a lot in Brisbane and I wanted to change it a little bit. I'm only young, so I wanted to try different things, I've played indoor last year (in the leadup to the Australian Open)."

Gasquet said the opportunity to hit with Ebden in preparation for France's opening tie against China was one he could not pass up.

The pair have faced off twice before, with Gasquet first winning in the second round of the Brisbane International in 2010, before again triumphing this year in Sydney.

Ebden's year will begin in Brisbane, where he will attempt to replicate his stellar march from this year when he stormed through the qualifying draw to reach the quarterfinals.

"It's nice to play with him, he's a great player and 80 in the world," Gasquet said. "He's still young, so it's good for me to practice with him and he's one of the best in Australia."

"I'm really happy to be here and I came early, because I play Saturday, so I will try and prepare well. It's always tough when you're coming from another place to Australia (because of the heat). I played one time in mixed doubles and I won Roland Garros, so I think I like it, I've never lost in the mixed doubles."

Gasquet will partner Marion Bartoli at the Hopman Cup. France's first match is against China, featuring French Open champion Li Na, on Saturday.

Richard Gasquet Targets 2012 season in Top-10




World No.19, Richard Gasquet has set his sights on getting back into the world’s top 10 during 2012 season.

Gasquet is hoping to make a comeback in Hopman cup by teaming-up with world No. 9, Marion Bartoli in his first appearance in Perth at the Hyundai Hopman Cup. He will be playing Perth for the first time, with France opening the round-robin event on New Year’s Eve against China, which boasts French Open champion, Li Na and untested Wu Dix, ranked 421st.

The No. 19 is keen to get back on track afteronce reaching seventh in the world before a shoulder injury and false charges of cocaine use derailed his career several seasons ago.

Gasquet while speaking with the sources has said that, I’ve never played here (Perth), it’s good to practise, it’s good to prepare and to get ready for Melbourne,” Gasquet told local media. “I played a lot in Brisbane (the ATP event the same week), I wanted to change it a bit.

The French men added that his goal in 2012 would be return top-10 in the tennis rakings, I’m trying to break into the top 10, I did it some years ago and I’m not far.

ATP ACES For Charity Grant Presented To Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation


Richard Gasquet presented the cheque on Monday in Sydney.

Apia International Sydney No. 3 Seed Richard Gasquet and Vice-President, ATP International, Alison Lee presented the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation with a $10,000 cheque as part of the ATP ACES For Charity programme on Monday.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), affiliated with the Apia International Sydney for over five years, is the world’s largest charitable supporter of Type 1 diabetes research, investing more than $100 million globally per year. It aims to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes and its complications by sourcing the best medical researchers and institutes.

Funds raised by JDRF’s participation in the tournament will be used for Australian medical research, and the partnership further encourages people with Type 1 diabetes to participate in activities that can improve their overall health

Prior to the presentation, Gasquet participated in a clinic with children suffering from juvenile diabetes.

Q. How do you see your chances going far into your home slam, Roland Garros?

RICHARD GASQUET: I played well last year. I think I had good matches against great players. I will try to go farther. I'm sure I can be better this year. It's very good for us to play at home. It's the best sensation you can have.

Q. Do you feel more pressure there than you do playing here?

Richard Gasquet i jego partner Julien Benneteau przemknęli niczym burza przez olimpijski turniej rozgrywany na trawiastych kortach All England Clubu i dopiero w półfinale musieli uznać wyższość późniejszych triumfatorów - braci Bryanów. Gasuet i Benneteau otrząsnęli się jednak po tym niepowodzeniu i podczas "finału pocieszenia" pewnie uporali się z Hiszpańską parą Ferrer/Lopez.

Benneteau/Gasquet Win Olympic Doubles Bronze Medal



Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet won the bronze medal on Saturday at the London 2012 Olympics Tennis Event.

Benneteau and Gasquet defeated Spaniards David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez 7-6(4), 6-2 on Court One at the All England Club, Wimbledon. The match lasted 79 minutes.



Benneteau, who considered winning the bronze medal the greatest achievement of his career, said, "It means a lot. I just said to Richard that, at the moment, I don't believe it. We have the medal; we have it for life, so it's something special.

"For me this is a very huge thing to have [won] an Olympic medal. It's amazing. For France, it is a good day today."

Gasquet added, "It's incredible. We have the medal for all of our life. It's crazy for us. We did it so it's incredible, but we don't believe it now."

Benneteau and Gasquet won 46 of their 60 service points, hitting four aces. Ferrer and Lopez, who could not convert their two break point opportunities in the first set, hit four double faults and committed 14 unforced errors.

At the start of the first set tie-break, there had been no breaks of serve, although opportunities came and went for both teams. Benneteau and Gasquet opened up a 5-2 lead in the tie-break, before Benneteau created three set point opportunities at 6-3 with a serve into Lopez’s body.

Gasquet clinched the 46-minute set with a backhand pass down the line – the 16th winner for the French duo. Gasquet ran to the net, fist-pumping in celebration. Ferrer and Lopez had committed 10 unforced errors in the set.

Aggressive hitting by Gasquet and Benneteau led to three break point chances on Ferrer’s serve at 1-1 in the second set. Ferrer saved two with well-placed deliveries, but at 30/40 he hit a second serve to Gasquet’s backhand. The return was dispatched for a winner down the line.



A few minutes later, Lopez dug himself out of a hole. He bounced back from 15/40 to deuce, but Benneteau and Gasquet were able to take a 4-1 lead. Three games later, Benneteau calmly held serve to love to win the bronze medal.

"They played better than Feliciano and I," said Ferrer. "It was a big week, but finally we don't have a medal so it's a difficult moment."

Francuz zagrał wczoraj w swoim 3 finale Mastersa w karierze. 2-gi raz miało to miejsce na ziemi kanadyjskiej (poprzednim razem 6 lat temu). Niestety, Richard nie dorzucił i tym razem do swojej kolekcji pucharowej tytułu Mastersa. Pogromcą Gasqueta w finale turnieju w Toronto okazał się Serb, Novak Djoković.

Gasquet Sweeps Past Simon In Bangkok For Seventh ATP World Tour Title

Richard Gasquet won his seventh ATP World Tour title on Sunday at the Thailand Open.

The second seed beat his fellow Frenchman and No. 4 seed Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-1 in Bangkok to earn $99,645 in prize money and 250 South African Airways ATP Rankings points.

Gasquet last won an ATP World Tour title in May 2010 at the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur (d. Verdasco). It was his second Asian title, following success at Mumbai in 2007.

Simon started strongly, breaking Gasquet’s serve in the opening game. But Gasquet broke back, then again at 4-2 and in the eighth game to capture the 30-minute set. Simon, the 2009 champion, won nine of his 23 service points.

Gasquet broke Simon for a 3-1 lead in the second set, then in hard-fought sixth game before closing out his 17th ATP World Tour final with a hold to 30 for victory in 69 minutes.

It was the second all-French ATP World Tour final of the year, after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Gael Monfils in January at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha.

Former World No. 7 Gasquet is now 6-0 lifetime against Simon in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series and improves his chances of competing at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 in London from 5-12 November.

World No. 19 Simon, who beat Viktor Troicki in the final three years ago, won just 42 per cent of his service points in his 13th final (10-3 overall). He received $52,390 and 150 South African Airways ATP Ranking points.

Mam nadzieję, że Richard jest w trakcie najlepszego czasu w swojej karierze. Po wielu problemach i straconych latach, ponownie jest najlepszy w turnieju ATP. Latem finał w Kanadzie, wcześniej finał w Estoril, nieźle idzie też w Szlemach - w Nowym Jorku przegrał z człowiekiem, z którym mógł przegrać bez żadnego wstydu. Oby pierwszy od 2,5 roku tytuł był zwiastunem kolejnych, powodzenia.

Forma jest naprawdę wysoka, więc możliwe, że uda mu się jeszcze coś ugrać do końca sezonu. Tego mu życzę, bo z przyjemnością ogląda się "taką" grę w jego wykonaniu.
