Chardy upsets top seed Mannarino

Second-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet, competing at the Libema Open for the first time since his debut in 2008, knocked out Evgeny Donskoy of Russia 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday in 70 minutes for a place in the quarter-finals.

“It’s always tough to win 6-2, 6-2,” said World No. 30 Gasquet. “I remember I lost on my birthday, 10 years ago here, against Marc Gicquel [in the second round]. The transition from clay to grass is definitely the toughest, and it gets tougher with age. I just need to play matches to get better."


Gasquet, who became the first player from his country to record 500 tour-level match wins in April, has won his two grass-court titles at 2005 and 2006 Nottingham. The 31-year-old will next challenge #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who saved a match point and came back to beat Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2. Tsitsipas was serving down 5/6 in the second-set tie-break, but erased the match point with a clean forehand volley. He later broke twice in the decider, including in the first game.

France's Jeremy Chardy upset countryman and top seed Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-4, winning the second set after heavy rain suspended play for more than two hours. Mannarino, No. 25 in the ATP Rankings, was playing as a top seed for the first time. He reached the final of the grass-court Turkish Airlines Open Antalya last year (l. to Sugita). Chardy will next meet American wild card Mackenzie McDonald, who beat Aussie qualifier Alex Bolt 6-4, 7-5.

Richard Gasquet reached his third semi-final of the season on Friday, beating #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(2), 7-6(4) at the Libema Open in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Gasquet, playing at the grass-court tournament for the first time since his debut in 2008, jumped out to early leads in both tie-breaks to even his FedEx ATP Head2Head series with the 19-year-old Tsitsipas 1-1. The Frenchman also hit nine aces and saved all five break points faced.

The 31-year-old Gasquet reached the Open Sud de France semi-finals en route to his first final of 2018 (l. to Pouille) and the Gran Prix Hassan II semi-finals in Marrakech.

He will next meet Aussie qualifier Bernard Tomic, who's feeling confident again on grass and beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-6(3) in 74 minutes. Gasquet leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 7-2 and has won two of their three grass-court matchups, including a straight-sets win last year at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

Gasquet Books Place In 30th Final

Richard Gasquet reached his 30th tour-level final, beating Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-2 on Saturday at the Libema Open.

The second seed converted five of seven break points en route to a one-hour, 48-minute victory to reach his second final of the season. In February, Gasquet reached his sixth consecutive Open Sud de France final, losing in straight sets to Lucas Pouille.

Gasquet came within two points of victory at 6/6 in the second-set tie-break, but Tomic held his nerve to force a decider. The World No. 30, not to be disheartened, secured an early break of serve to lead 2-0 before charging to victory. The World No. 30 improves to 8-2 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series with Tomic, who was contesting his first tour-level semi-final since the 2016 Fever-Tree Championships. Gasquet will face countryman Jeremy Chardy in Sunday's final.

Chardy reached his first tour-level final in nine years, beating Australia's Matthew Ebden 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 32 minutes.

The 31-year-old, who last reached a championship match at the 2009 MercedesCup (d. Hanescu), hit 14 aces and saved both break points he faced. The Frenchman had lost his past seven tour-level semi-finals dating back to his 2009 triumph in Stuttgart. Chardy maintains his perfect FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Ebden, improving to 4-0.

Po raz drugi w obecnym sezonie do finału turnieju głównego cyklu dotarło dwóch reprezentantów Francji. W lutym, w meczu o tytuł w Montpellier, Lucas Pouille pokonał Richarda Gasqueta. Z kolei w niedzielę, w finale imprezy ATP w Den Bosch, Gasquet zmierzył się z Jeremym Chardym.

Rozstawiony z numerem drugim Gasquet był faworytem. I nie zawiódł, choć zwycięstwo nie przyszło mu łatwo. Pierwszą partię tenisista z Beziers wygrał 6:3, zdobywając dwa końcowe gemy z rzędu. W drugiej odsłonie natomiast przegrywał 3:5, lecz obronił dwa setbole, wyrównał na 5:5, następnie doprowadził do tie breaka, w którym zwyciężył 7-5.

- Jesteśmy przyzwyczajeni do gry z rodakami, ale rywalizacja z przyjacielem nigdy nie jest łatwa - mówił Gasquet, którym tym samym podwyższył na 5-1 bilans konfrontacji z Chardym. - Jestem bardzo zadowolony że zdobyłem tytuł. Dla Gasqueta to 15. tytuł rangi ATP World Tour w karierze, lecz pierwszy od października 2016 roku. Za triumf w Libema Open 2018 Francuz otrzyma 250 punktów do rankingu ATP oraz 109,3 tys. euro.

Z kolei Chardy poniósł drugą porażkę w trzecim finale w karierze. - Przegrałem, ale jestem zadowolony ze swojego występu. Uważam, że rozegrałem dobry mecz, ale Richard był lepszy ode mnie i zasłużenie wygrał - powiedział 31-latek z Pau, który opuści Den Bosch bogatszy o 150 "oczek" i 57,5 tys. euro.

Richard Gasquet clinched his 15th tour-level title, beating countryman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6(5) on Sunday at the Libema Open.

The 31-year-old, competing in his second final of the season after a runner-up finish at the Open Sud de France, secured his first tournament victory since the 2016 European Open in 90 minutes. Gasquet, now 15-15 in championship matches on the ATP World Tour, saved two set points at 5-4 (40/15) in the second set before snapping Chardy's nine-match winning streak.

"It is great to win a title again," said Gasquet. "It [has been] two years that I didn't win. It is my 15th [title], so it is unusual. It is very tough to win on the ATP World Tour... I am very happy to win here, it is a great tournament and I am very proud about [winning] it."

Chardy was bidding to win back-to-back titles after lifting the Surbiton Trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour last week. "I started my grass-court season really well with two really good weeks, said Chardy. "The first tournament [in Surbiton] I won and another final this week, so [it is] a lot of confidence for me."

Gasquet has now won three of his 15 tour-level titles on grass, ending a 12-year wait after winning his opening crowns on the surface in Nottingham (2005-2006).

The second seed now leads Chardy 5-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, with a 2-1 record this season after splitting encounters at ATP World Tour Masters 1000-level in Miami and Monte Carlo.

"It is never easy playing a friend but we are used to playing a lot of French players throughout the year. Of course it is not my first time, but it is never easy," said Gasquet.


After trading breaks in the sixth and seventh games of the opening set, Gasquet made the crucial move at 4-3. The Open Sud de France finalist hit back-to-back forehand winners to open the game, before clinching the break, after great court coverage, with a flicked backhand passing shot.

Chardy appeared to be taking the match to a third set, when he secured the first break of the second set to lead 5-3. But the second seed held his nerve, saving two consecutive set points, with aggression on his backhand side, before levelling the set and forcing a tie-break.

Both players struggled to hold serve under the pressure of a tie-break, with seven mini-breaks in the first nine points handing Gasquet two service points to seal the win at 5/4. A confident ace down the T earned Gasquet two points for the title, and although Chardy gave himself a lifeline with a forehand winner, he could not handle a low, sharp-angled forehand from Gasquet on the second championship point.

"I am really happy with my match today. I think I played a good match from the beginning to the end but Richard was just a little bit better than me, he deserved to win," reflected Chardy.

The 15-time tour-level titlist is projected to rise to No. 25 in the ATP Rankings on Monday, his highest position since 11 June last year. He will receive 250 ATP Ranking points and collect €109,310 for lifting the trophy. Chardy gains 150 points and receives €57,570.

Fognini, who owns a 30-14 record this season, will attempt to defeat Gasquet for the second time in four FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings.

Gasquet booked his place in his third tour-level final this season, cruising past Henri Laaksonen 6-2, 6-3. The fourth seed won 80 per cent of first-serve points and converted four of nine break-point chances to reach the championship match after 72 minutes.

The World No. 29, who improved to 15-15 in tour-level finals by lifting his third grass-court title at the Libema Open in June, recovered from an early break down in the second set to deny lucky loser Laaksonen a place in his first tour-level final. The Swiss 26-year-old was appearing in his second tour-level semi-final after falling to David Goffin at the final-four stage of the 2017 Shenzhen Open.

Another seeded player, No. 8 Richard Gasquet, made a good start to this year’s tournament by defeating American qualifier Denis Kudla 7-6(8), 6-3 to reach the second round.

Gasquet was put in difficulty in the opening set, as World No. 65 Kudla played aggressively off the backhand side to earn four set points in the tie-break. But the French favourite held his nerve to take the lead, and then maintained the one break he earned in the second set to close out his victory in one hour, 36 minutes.

“The first set was very tight. I saved many set points. That made the difference in the match,” Gasquet said. “Of course if he won the first set it’s a completely different match, so that’s why I’m really happy to win this one. We did a lot of running, so it was important to me to win this one and I felt more confident in the second set.”

Gasquet, who made the final here on debut in 2007, arrived in Tokyo having lost three of his previous four tour-level matches. But he bounced back to claim his 29th match win (29-19) of the season. The 32-year-old has had a strong season, winning the Libema Open title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and reaching finals in Montpellier and Bastad. He will face talented Aussie Nick Kyrgios or Shenzhen Open champion Yoshihito Nishioka next for a spot in the quarter-finals.
