Q. Where did you feel that went wrong for you?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, I think it was a very tough match. I think he played very good, especially in both tiebreak. He played very clever game. He serve incredible during all the match.

So I think it was the key of the match. He serve very good. I couldn't break him so much. But he didn't break me too much, too. So it was a big match.

I tried my best to perform and to win. But, as I said, he played just a little bit better than me.

Q. Entertaining match for the crowd. Could you feel them enjoying it?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it was a very nice match, a lot of nice rallies. It was a big match. I think I play my game. I try my best.

He just serve very good. I'm not solid in the tiebreaks, and that's why he win. I think he deserve this win. He play very good. Congratulations to him.

Q. Did you hear the noise coming from Court 2?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I realize, but for one second after I need to serve. It was 5‑4 for him, so... I didn't care so much.

Q. It didn't unsettle you in any way?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, no. I didn't care at all. I'm happy for her if she won. It's very nice.

Q. You had four tiebreaks in the tournament. You lost them all.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah.

Q. Why do you think?

RICHARD GASQUET: I don't know. There is no reason. Sometimes I'm winning; sometimes I'm losing. No big reasons. I think all the tiebreaks the guys play well. I try my best to win them, but I couldn't.

That's not a real reason for that.

Przemyślałem temat Ryszarda i muszę stwierdzić, że to znakomita informacja, że w taki sposób zwieńczył nie tylko trwający sezon, ale całą swoją karierę, wynagradzając swojemu talentowi lata zaniedbań. Tenisista, który pobił niemal wszystkie "najmłodsze" rekordy ATP (poza tym, jako jeden z pierwszych wciąż aktywnych wygrał turniej na każdej możliwej nawierzchni - z carpetem włącznie), zasługuje na swoją chwilę. Fajnie będzie go zobaczyć (w moim przypadku mieć świadomość) w półfinale szlema.

Ten sezon rewelacyjny - powrót do Top10, wypracowany 2 wygranymi turniejami, połówką Miami, ćwiartkami Monte Carlo i Kanady oraz szeregiem 4. rund: AO, RG, IW, Rzym. Do tego połówka w Halle, a teraz drugi w karierze półfinał US Open. Brawo!

Jeszcze jakiś Masters by się przydał, bo aż głupio to będzie wyglądać u takiego zawodnika - same małe turnieje na koncie. Oczywiście możliwości są na dobrych kilka, ale przy obecnej sytuacji w tenisie raczej nie ma co na to liczyć. Ale już taki Paryż, przy korzystnym zbiegu okoliczności, wydaje się być do wzięcia.

Tak w ogóle, czuć po nim rękę Piattiego jednak. Niektóre akcje wypisz wymaluj Ljubicic. Szkoda tylko, że siatka już nie taka jak u Ivana.

GASQUET BREAKS NEW GROUND AT FLUSHING MEADOWS



Richard Gasquet is through to the US Open semi-finals for the first time after holding his nerve to battle past World No. 4 David Ferrer 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 on Wednesday at Flushing Meadows.

"Even if I was leading two sets to love I knew it was David Ferrer. I knew he's a big fighter so I knew it was not over," said Gasquet. "I knew I was so close to win this match, and I fight a lot to finish. Especially at 5-3 I was a little bit nervous to go in the semis of US Open, and I managed to do it. It's a big victory for me."

The Frenchman will look to reach his first Grand Slam final when he faces Rafael Nadal on Saturday. He will contest his second major semi-final, having reached the last four at Wimbledon in 2007 (l. to Federer). He is just the second Frenchman in the Open Era to reach the semi-finals in New York and will hope to emulate Cedric Pioline’s feat of reaching the 1993 final.

Before his dramatic five-set win over Milos Raonic in the fourth round, in which he saved one match point, Gasquet had lost his past 11 fourth-round matches at Grand Slam championships. The 27-year-old Frenchman overturned a 1-8 FedEx ATP Head2Head deficit against Ferrer to keep his run alive at Flushing Meadows.

"Was a little bit tired after Raonic. We play four hours, 30 minutes, but I knew I could play another big match," said Gasquet. "I was feeling not so tired this morning, and I knew I had to be aggressive. My backhand was working very good today. I think it was the key of the match. I played a lot of down the line, and it worked very good... When I'm serving great and I have this backhand, I think I can play well."

After saving three break points in the first game of the match, Gasquet broke for a 3-1 lead, benefitting from one of a spate of errors from Ferrer, which would ultimately cost the Spaniard the opening two sets. Gasquet hit 15 winners to just three from Ferrer in a second set which exhibited the Frenchman’s full array of shot making.

Two sets to the good, though, and Gasquet was immediately rocked as Ferrer broke to love to open the third set. Gasquet fought back from a 4-1 double break deficit to reclaim one of the service breaks, but Ferrer closed out the set in the 10th game to initiate his comeback.

Ferrer dominated the fourth set, raising his first serve percentage to 71 per cent and saving three break points in the sixth game before breaking Gasquet twice to force a deciding set. It looked as though the Spaniard would carry his momentum into the fifth set, but Gasquet steadied himself to save a break point in the sixth game before breaking Ferrer decisively and serving out the victory in three hours and 23 minutes.

"I think Richard played a very good game with his backhand and he was serving very good in important moments," said Ferrer. "Maybe in the first and second sets I didn't play so good. I was a little bit tired. But I tried to do my best.

"I fought until the last ball. I think in the fifth set when he got the break, I played very bad in that game, with three easy mistakes. But in a fifth set with one break down it is difficult to come back again, because Richard is a Top 10 player."

The 31-year-old Ferrer was attempting to reach the US Open semi-finals for the third time (2007, ’12). He reached his first Grand Slam final three months ago at Roland Garros, finishing runner-up to Nadal.

World No. 9 Gasquet has a 39-14 record in 2013, winning titles in Doha (d. Davydenko) and Montpellier (d. Paire). Coming into the US Open, he had followed a quarter-final showing in Montreal with a second-round exit in Cincinnati (l. to Isner).

Q. You won the first two sets, lost the next two. Going into the fifth set against a guy you have only beaten once before, what's going through your head?

RICHARD GASQUET: Even if I was leading two sets to love I knew it was David Ferrer. I knew he's a big fighter so I knew it was not over. He played well in the start in the third set. Fourth set I played well too, but he was a little bit better than me. So I knew I had to keep my serve in the fifth, and that's what I did. I did a bad game at 3-2 for me, and then I was leading 4-1. I knew I was so close to win this match, and I fight a lot to finish. Especially at 5-3 I was a little bit nervous to go in the semis of US Open, and I managed to do it. It's a big victory for me.

Q. You lost a lot of close five set matches in your career. What does it mean to you, this match, and the last match against Raonic?

RICHARD GASQUET: I think I lost it, but I won some, too. So it's in the middle, you know. I don't want to say I lost all the time in the fifth set because I won against Roddick in quarter in Wimbledon. Two days ago I won in five set too. It's true I lost sometimes too. But always difficult for me when you are losing this kind of match, especially when your are winning, 5-2 in the fifth, I really wanted to close that match to win, because it's Ferrer, center court in US Open, so it's a big chance for me to go in semis. I knew in the fifth set it was a very important set for me.

Q. We don't know for sure who your semifinal opponent is, but if it is Rafa, your record on the pro tour is not so great, but can you talk about I was trying to be nice but can you talk about the match you played when you were 13?

RICHARD GASQUET: I saw on YouTube that video sometimes. People are talking about this video, you know, when I played against him, against Rafa. YouTube and I can see I'm winning against him, so I don't believe it sometimes (laughter).

Q. Can you tell us how weird that was?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, I didn't know him when I played him, you know, when I was 13 years old. He was already fighting a lot already, already running so much, and I remember I won maybe 6-4 in a set, and I told my father after, He's a big fighter. I didn't lie; I was true. In the future, this one is biggest player in the world in the history. So for sure I won that time at 13 years old, but since this match I didn't...

Q. Where was that, do you know?

RICHARD GASQUET: It was a match in Tarbes, one of the biggest tournaments for the younger children under 14. You know, it's good to win under 14, but is better to win on the pro, and I didn't. But life is long, huh? We are only 27 years old. Even me. So why not? We will see.

Q. Your record against Ferrer wasn't so good, either.

RICHARD GASQUET: No, no, no.

Q. But today what was the difference?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was losing 8 to 1 against him, so it's difficult. But I'm really happy to win against him, especially in five sets, especially in a quarter in center court. It's a big victory for me.

Q. It's been a while since you have been to a semifinal.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, six years ago. I did a great match against Roddick winning 8 6 in the fifth; today I won in five sets, too. For sure one of the biggest victory.

Q. That fifth set, you know, it's very hard to put Ferrer away, but you showed a level of maturity that, you know, since that all the hard work you have been doing, a lot of fitness. And since that pays off, like how is your confidence in the fifth set? Certain times you are playing a little defensive. How did you change to continue being aggressive?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, for sure I think I work a lot physically. Was a little bit tired after Raonic. We play 4 hours 30 minutes, but I knew I could play another big match. I was feeling not so tired this morning. And I knew I had to be aggressive. My backhand was working very good today. I think it was the key of the match. I played a lot of down the line, and it work very good. Yeah, for sure I played aggressive. I knew I had to start well, too, and I managed to do that two shots. And when I'm serving great and I have this backhand, I think I can play well.

Q. If you play Rafa with the record you have had, how do you maintain confidence going into the match? And do you feel you're playing at your highest level you have played in recent years?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I think it's very difficult to play against Rafa. I'm not the only one to lose, to have this record. But it's very difficult because he's powerful, especially with the forehand. No, I'm in semis in US Open. I want to do the best I can do. I will try to go in this match to win. If not, don't go on the court. But I know he's the favorite of the match. Nobody will say I'm the favorite. But, yeah, I want to play a big match.

Q. Do you feel like you're playing at the best you have played in the last few years?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I'm playing very good. I'm in semis in US Open, so for sure I'm playing my best tennis. To win Raonic and Ferrer in five sets you need to play your best tennis.

Q. This is the second five setter in a row. How are you holding up physically? How are you feeling right now?

RICHARD GASQUET: Right now for sure a little bit tired (laughter). But I have two days to recover. I'm playing Saturday. That's make a big difference for me. I think Saturday I will be fresh. But, yeah, especially I was a little bit this was difficult, because Raonic, we played big match. But today was the same. I managed to fight in the fifth. It was a big victory for me.

Q. I know it's so soon after your match, but you had a great run here. Are you able to look back and take a lot of positives out of the tournament as a whole?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, of course. I made the semifinals, so for sure for me it's a big step. Last time I did it was six years ago, very long for me. But of course it's very nice to finish a tournament and to be in semifinal. Of course I'm a little bit disappointed. I think I was close to win the second set. I could do the break in the second, you never know what could happen in the third. But I think he was little bit better than me. No problem with that. Of course it's a very good tournament for me.

Q. He comes in with such a great record on hard courts, and he hadn't lost serve. You changed that. You could take some small victories out of that, too. You played him well.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I don't know if it's a victory to win his serve. I'm not sure about it. I think it's better to win one set or more. But it's true, in a Grand Slam it's even tougher to play against him because it's three sets to win. But, yeah, I did not a bad match, but it was 3 sets 0, so at the end he was the best on the court. I think in the second if I could do a break and serve for the set. We will never know. But it's Nadal. That's why he's the best player, especially on hard. He play well. I'm happy with the tournament I did.

Q. Judging this year's performance, one of the best year of your career, one semifinal, two fourth round, and Wimbledon third round. How are you looking back?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I'm playing well. I'm I think in top 10 for the race, so for sure it's a big achievement for me. Last year I finish in the top 10. This year when I start the year I wanted to play the Masters Cup. I'm still in the race to do that, and I will try to play in London this year. I think there is not so many tournaments to play, so I'm still in the race, and I will try to do Masters Cup. But for sure it's a good year for me to play here semis. It's a big result for me.

Q. How much of a confidence builder has this tournament been for you?

RICHARD GASQUET: I can take a lot of confidence with this tournament because I did two five sets and I won them. Physically I played well. Mentally I was tough, too. I did two big matches against Raonic and Ferrer. So for sure it's very nice, very good for me. I know I can play long matches. I know I'm ready to win this fight, and that's big for me. Yeah, I think I'm more confident after the tournament, this tournament, and I hope I will play good in the future.
