ADELAIDE'S Thanasi Kokkinakis admits it will hurt watching New South Welshman Nick Kyrgios play in the French Open main draw starting on Monday.

The teenagers met in a tight Australian Open Junior final on Rod Laver Arena in January - and both appeared to be in the fast lane to the big-time.

But in the four months since, Kokkinakis, 17, has been laid low by a back injury, while Kyrgios has begun making his mark on the senior tennis scene.

"I'm not going to lie, it is frustrating," Kokkinakis says.

"In January, I was pretty much on a par with him (Kyrgios) and and my ATP ranking was actually slightly higher than him.

"But after that final I obviously got injured and he has played really good tennis."

Kokkinakis sustained a stress fracture in his back during his run to the Australian Open final, which he lost to Kyrgios, and was forced to rest for a month before slowly working on his return.

He has now almost recovered full fitness and flies out today to watch Kyrgios and Australia's other hopefuls in the French Open.

Kokkinakis hopes to be back playing in time for the Wimbledon Junior Boys title in June.

"If my body is good I will play junior Wimbledon," he says.

"I'm back doing two sessions a day mainly on the softer surfaces like clay, so I'm pretty close to resuming matches."

Following Wimbledon, Kokkinakis will aim to improve his senior world ranking of about 700, and hopes to follow Kygrios in making his senior grand slam debut over the next year.

"The main goal at the moment is to stay healthy.

"If I can get myself hitting the ball well and my body is good then maybe I'll be chance at a wildcard into the Australian Open next year."

Kolejny wielkoszlemowy finał!

Thanasi zaliczył 2-gi w sezonie finał juniorskiego Wielkiego Szlema - tym razem podczas US Open. W NY również przegrał, ale finał i tak należy uznać za świetny rezultat, z powodu dłuższej przerwy Australijczyka spowodowanej kontuzją.

Przed Australijczykiem jeszcze tylko jeden turniej juniorski?

Zgodnie z przepisami może grać do końca roku, w którym skończy/ł 18 lat. Trudno powiedzieć, czy skończy po AO - nie było żadnych deklaracji w tej sprawie. Wiadomo jednak, że teraz czeka go dłuższa przerwa - nazwisko Thanasiego zniknęło z listy graczy turniejów ITF w Cairns i Alice Springs, gdzie jeszcze 2 tygodnie temu był gotowy zagrać.

Młody wygrał pierwszy mecz na poziomie CH - w Napa Valley. Pokonał po 3 zaciętych setach...Wujka Toniego. Oby to był dobry znak.

Trochę się dziwiłem Thanasiemu, że wybrał CH w USA (w zasadzie ich kwale) od pewnego miejsca w ITF-ach u siebie - a Australii. Teraz jednak wychodzi na to, że to był dobry wybór. Na Antypodach pewnie mógłby się zakręcić koło jakiegoś tytułu, na co tutaj szans nie ma, ale lepiej walczyć na noże z lepszymi niż komfortowo wygrywać mecze na najniższym szczeblu.

Kokkinakis US-bound to train with top-100 tennis stars


South Australian teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis is one of Australia's brightest tennis talents.

OUTSTANDING South Australian prospect Thanasi Kokkinakis will skip the Australian Open wildcard playoff in December for a six-week training camp in the United States.

The 17-year-old, a two-time grand slam junior boys’ singles runner-up, will train alongside top-100 players Tommy Haas, Sam Querrey and Jack Sock as he prepares for the Australian summer.

“The plan is to go to America to train for six weeks during the wildcard playoff here, so I’m not going to play that,” Kokkinakis said.

“I’m training there with guys like Haas, Querrey and Jack Sock.

“Six weeks over there just to build my body and get ready for the summer will be good for me.”
Kokkinakis announced last week he was going to compete in the World Tennis Challenge, an exhibition team event, at Memorial Dve in Adelaide from January 7 to 9.

He will then attempt to qualify for the Australian Open.

Kokkinakis is in Melbourne this week for an ATP Challenger event and today progressed to round two – and a clash with top seed Matt Ebden – with a 6-3 6-3 win over Japanese qualifier Kento Takeuchi.

Kokkinakis will also contest next week’s Traralgon ATP Challenger.

It was the second time he has beaten Takeuchi, the first coming at Bundaberg, Queensland, just days before his 15th birthday two years ago.

“I actually played him once before and he was my first point I got when I was 14, so I have a good memory against him and felt like I knew how to play him,” Kokkinakis said.
“I just really wanted to get on court, because we’ve waited a few days (due to rain) and it was a bit frustrating.
“He liked the ball low, so indoors suited him, but it helped my serve a lot. So when I got that big, hard shot in, I was able to win the point pretty quickly.”

Kokkinakis displayed all of the raw power which has experts labelling him one of Australia’s brightest talents in years.

Todd Woodbridge said last week teenagers Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios would challenge Bernard Tomic as Australia's best player in the next decade.

The world No.661, who will rise further in the rankings thanks to his latest success, clubbed winners at will on both wings and served 11 aces in the 78-minute contest.

“That’s how I have to play and there’s a lot to play for as well, with a big summer coming up,” Kokkinakis said.

“You can’t really be tight, so I was just trying to play free. I’ve played a lot of matches recently, so that helped me.

“I’m not used to playing that many matches, because of my (back) injury ... (but) I’m playing pretty good.”

Kokkinakis qualified for consecutive Challengers in the United States last month and reached the second round at both.

Thanasi prawdopodobnie dostanie WC do MD AO - młody Australijczyk został potwierdzony do gry w Adelajdzie (World Tennis Challenge na kortach Memorial Drive Tennis Centre) - impreza odbędzie się w tym samym czasie, co początek kwalifikacji do AO - trudno oczekiwać Kokkinakisa w dwóch miejscach w tym samym czasie - podobnie jak trudno jest sobie wyobrazić AO bez jego udziału.
