Hugo Humbert is the champion of the 9th edition of the Sparkasse Challenger Val Gardena Südtirol. The 20-year-old emerged victorious from Sunday’s all-French final of the €64,000 ATP Challenger event 6-4, 6-2 against top seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Humbert was in control of the encounter, saved both break points he faced, converting three of his own four opportunities to seal victory in one hour and one minute.

“I was able to play my game. I stayed aggressive and tried to come to the net,” Humbert said after his second victory over Herbert in as many meetings between the two. “It was a good match and a good win against a very strong player.”

The #NextGenATP player from Metz takes away €9,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP-Ranking points. Humbert will crack the top 100 for the first time.

“This means a lot to me. It has been my dream since I was kid. This is amazing. I am happy right now and I hope to continue like this.” Humbert will next play at the ATP Challenger in Ismaning next week.

W Breście nie dojdzie w tym tygodniu do interesującego pojedynku z udziałem dwóch odkryć obecnego sezonu. Ugo Humbert otrzymał dziką kartę do halowych zawodów ATP World Tour Masters 1000 w Paryżu i nie spotka się z Hubertem Hurkaczem.

Leworęczny Ugo Humbert przebojem wdarł się do najlepszej setki rankingu ATP. 20-latek z Metz zaczął od wygrywania futuresów, ale potem sięgnął po tytuł w challengerach w Segowii i Ortisei. W sierpniu zaliczył udany debiut w głównej drabince imprezy Wielkiego Szlema, wygrywając mecz w US Open 2018. Aktualnie jest 92. rakietą globu.

Humbert miał być jedną z gwiazd challengera w Breście, ale po dwóch intensywnych tygodniach spędzonych w Ortisei i Ismaning postanowił się wycofać. Jako powód podał uraz nogi. Tak naprawdę to chce być gotowy na grę w turnieju ATP World Tour Masters 1000 w Paryżu, do którego organizatorzy przyznali mu dziką kartę do głównej drabinki. Takie wyróżnienie otrzymali także Pierre-Hugues Herbert i Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Tym samym nie dojdzie do spotkania Humberta z Hubertem Hurkaczem w ćwierćfinale zawodów w Breście. Byłoby to starcie dwóch tenisistów, którzy mają jeszcze szansę na występ w mediolańskich Finałach Next Gen ATP. Polak powalczy o półfinał z Tak Khunnem Wangiem lub Benjaminem Bonzim. Niezależnie od rywala będzie faworytem tego pojedynku.

Andria e Castel del Monte Challenger (Andria, Italy): After 159 tournaments and nearly 5,000 matches, the 2018 season came to a close on Sunday evening in Andria. The traditional season-ending tournament saw Ugo Humbert claim the final match of the year, blasting to his third ATP Challenger Tour title.

Top seed Humbert defeated Filippo Baldi 6-4, 7-6(3) in Sunday's championship, completing a dominant week on the carpet courts. The #NextGenATP Frenchman did not only win the title without dropping a set, but he conceded just one break of serve throughout the entire tournament.

Humbert entered the week on the bubble of the year-end Top 100 and he would blast to a career-high No. 84 in the ATP Rankings. After opening the season at No. 378, it was quite the breakout campaign for the 20-year-old from Metz. He finished in sixth place among win-loss percentage leaders, behind a 34-13 record (.723) and titles in Segovia, Spain and Ortisei, Italy, in addition to his victory in Andria. He also had a trio of runner-up finishes in Granby, Gatineau and Cassis.

It was a critical finish to the season for Humbert, whose ATP Ranking will drop after ITF Futures points come off on January 1. Starting in 2019, all points earned at the level will be applied to the newly formed ITF transition tour. Only points earned on the ATP Challenger Tour, ATP World Tour and Grand Slams will go towards a player's ATP Ranking.

Challenger La Manche (Cherbourg, France): He opened the week as the top seed as finished as No. 1. Ugo Humbert blasted to the title on home soil in Cherbourg, rallying from a set down in both the semis and the final to lift the trophy. He overcame Mats Moraing on Saturday before storming back to defeat Steve Darcis 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-3 in the championship. At two hours and 23 minutes, it is the longest final thus far in 2019.

Humbert added a fourth ATP Challenger Tour title in total and first in his native France, adding to 2018 triumphs in Segovia, Ortisei and Andria. The #NextGenATP is the youngest Frenchman to claim a quartet of crowns since Richard Gasquet in 2003. At the age of 20, Humbert has firmly cemented himself in the Top 100, rising to a career-high No. 75 in the ATP Rankings.

Moreover, the Metz native surges five spots to fifth place in the ATP Race To Milan. Last year, he finished just outside the Top 7 automatic qualifiers, but he has made a strong early push to punch his ticket to the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2019.

On the other side of the net, Darcis continued his magical comeback from a debilitating elbow injury. Having missed the entire 2018 season, he is on fire in his return, reaching the semis at the season-opening ATP Tour stop in Pune and the final this week in Cherbourg. It was the first final for the former World No. 38 in nearly two years.
