Former World No. 3 Milos Raonic, on the comeback from injuries in 2017, will be making his way up the ATP Rankings in the very near future.

The 32nd seed won his second match in a row in Indian Wells, beating Portugal's Joao Sousa 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open for the first time since his final run in 2016 (l. to Djokovic). Raonic missed last year's tournament because of an injury to his right leg.

The 6'5" right-hander was broken in the second set, but regrouped in the decider, not facing a break point to run away with the match. The Canadian finished with 12 aces and won 93 per cent of his first-serve points (39/42). It's the first time he has won back-to-back matches since the Citi Open in August 2017.

Raonic improved to 4-0 against Sousa in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, and is now 3-3 on the season. His other win came against Japan's Taro Daniel at the Delray Beach Open in February.

Raonic, who beat #NextGenATP countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime to face Sousa, will next meet Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, who improved to 3-0 against Dudi Sela of Israel in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win.

Baghdatis qualified for the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event and now has a chance of bringing his time in Indian Wells full circle. On debut, he made the quarter-finals in 2006. The 32-year-old, No. 102 in the ATP Rankings, is 1-3 against Raonic in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, with his lone win coming at 2012 Rolex Shanghai Masters.

Raonic Lines Up Potential Delpo Re-Match

Milos Raonic continued his return to full fitness and form on Tuesday when he maintained his perfect record over Jeremy Chardy for a place in the Miami Open presented by Itau quarter-finals.

The Canadian knocked out Grigor Dimitrov’s conqueror 6-3, 6-4 in 86 minutes to set up a clash against in-form sixth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, the BNP Paribas Open champion, or No. 22 seed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia. Having dropped to No. 40 in ATP Rankings on 26 February — his lowest position since No. 59 on 14 February 2011— Raonic has bounced back and two weeks ago lost to Del Potro in the Indian Wells semi-finals.

Raonic won 85 per cent of his first-service points (28/33) against Chardy to reach the Miami last eight for a third time (also 2014, 2016). He broke serve in the third and ninth games of the first set, then raised his game to break in the final game.

The 27-year-old Raonic struck 12 aces past Chardy to improve to 6-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. He has hit 38 aces in three matches at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament and, according to ATP Scores & Stats, Raonic is No. 15 in the all-time aces list with 6,077 aces.

Milos Rising: Raonic Ousts Dimitrov

If his efforts since the start of 2018 had not shown enough, Canadian Milos Raonic loudly and clearly announced his return to form on Tuesday evening.
The 27-year-old earned his first Top 10 win since Brisbane in 2017 (d. Nadal) with an impressive 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 triumph against reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Grigor Dimitrov at the Mutua Madrid Open.
"I played well. Created a lot of opportunities, made the most of a few of them," Raonic said. "Overall a very positive level and a positive performance for me."
Raonic struggled throughout 2017 with various injuries. But the World No. 24, who made the semi-finals at Indian Wells and the quarter-finals at Miami earlier this year, earned his second Top 20 win of 2018 against a player in Dimitrov whom he had not beaten since Stockholm in 2011. The Bulgarian still leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 3-2.

Raonic faced break point at 3-3 in the decider — one of just two break points he faced in the match — but once he held, the pressure was back on Dimitrov. That was when all of Raonic's efforts in the encounter to step into second-serve returns paid massive dividends.

"I'm trying to move forward. That's where I can do my best. That's where I can give myself the best opportunity to win," Raonic said. "I'm happy with that. I'm happy with the fact that I was able to execute and serve well."
Dimitrov, perhaps in an effort to avoid a big return by the former World No. 3, double-faulted at deuce while serving at 3-4. And then on break point, Raonic's block-return of a body serve barely clipped the baseline and with the well-placed serve neutralised, the Canadian then took control of the point with his forehand. He eventually stepped into a flat forehand down the line that the Bulgarian could not handle. With the crucial break in hand, Raonic served out the two-hour match to 30.

If a second-round blockbuster wasn't enough for Raonic, he will get another one in the third round against his compatriot, Denis Shapovalov.
The #NextGenATP Canadian won a match of momentum swings, and plenty of power in Madrid to deny Benoit Paire of France the perfect 29th birthday present with a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4 victory in two hours and nine minutes.

Shapovalov, now with a 3-3 record in clay-court matches, struck 38 winners — including 18 on his forehand.

Raonic Races Into Stuttgart QFs

Milos Raonic, 2016 Wimbledon finalist, cruised past Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-4 in 51 minutes at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart on Thursday to set an exciting quarter-final clash against 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych.

"It's never easy on grass. Obviously the one important thing for me was I held my serve pretty routinely throughout the match. That puts a lot of pressure on my opponent so when I do get a few chances, they feel a lot more difficult for him because it could be the end of that set," Raonic said. "I'm doing things well. I'm happy with the way I'm playing, and I hope I can continue this way."

Raonic, who made at least the quarter-finals at two of his four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events this season (Indian Wells, Miami), is pursuing his first tour-level grass-court title. He hit 19 aces and lost just seven points on serve to move into the final eight. Raonic has not faced a break point in his first two matches. The Canadian leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Berdych 5-3.

Berdych snapped a five-match losing streak, defeating Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-6(3), 6-4 to set the battle against Raonic.

The No. 3 seed, who has reached back-to-back Wimbledon semi-finals, had not lost five consecutive matches since the end of 2004 through the beginning of 2005, when he dropped six in a row. At the time, the Czech was just 19 years old. But he bounced back on the Stuttgart grass, dropping just six first-serve points and saving the only break point he faced to move past the World No. 47.

"It was a tough one. He's a very talented player. You really don't know until the last moment what's going to come up. He's very talented, all the shots he can make. For the first time after such a long time, to play him, it's not easy. But I'm glad that I had a good test and I think I played very well throughout the whole match," Berdych said.

Berdych now leads Paire 3-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series after defeating the Frenchman in their first meeting since Roland Garros in 2015. The Czech showed good form early in the season, reaching at least the quarter-finals at three of his first four tournaments. Berdych seeks his first ATP World Tour title since the Shenzhen Open in 2016.

Raonic Rising: Milos Ousts Defending Champ Pouille In Stuttgart

Raonic to face Federer or Kyrgios in Sunday's final
Milos Raonic is on the rise again.

The Canadian defeated defending champion and No. 2 seed Lucas Pouille 6-4, 7-6(3) on Saturday in the MercedesCup semi-finals to advance to his first tour-level final since the 2017 TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open last May.

"It's a really positive step forward for me. I've played good tennis this week," Raonic said. "I'm very happy with myself and I hope I can continue to improve my level tomorrow."

Raonic will play top seed Roger Federer or talented Aussie Nick Kyrgios on Sunday in an attempt to lift his first trophy since the 2016 Brisbane International presented by Suncorp. From 2011-2016, the big-serving right-hander won at least one title per season, triumphing eight times.

The 27-year-old dropped to No. 40 in the ATP Rankings on 26 February, but bounced back with a semi-final showing at the BNP Paribas Open and a quarter-final appearance at the Miami Open presented by Itau in the first two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events of the season.

Raonic, who saved the only break point he faced against the Frenchman, has now held in all 42 of his service games this week. He has not dropped a set in the first week of play on the mown lawns.

"I've done my job," Raonic said. "I've taken care of my serve and I've tried to create pressure on my opponents... I haven't faced many break points so far this week."

Raonic entered the match having won all five of his FedEx ATP Head2Head sets against Pouille by a margin of 6-4 or greater, with both of their previous matches coming in the first month of the 2016 season. Now, the Canadian leads their series 3-0.

The match never seemed to be out of Raonic's hand, whether it was dominating on serve or dictating play, especially on Pouille's second-serve points, with his forehand. Raonic earned the first break for 3-2 in the first set with an inside-in forehand winner. On the only break point he faced, serving for the first set at 5-4, he controlled the rally with his forehand to avoid a hiccup.

The 24-year-old Frenchman showed his shotmaking abilities in the second set, saving the second of two break points he faced in the seventh game with a crisp crosscourt forehand passing shot. But in the tie-break, Raonic earned an early mini-break for 3-1 with a deep backhand return, and never looked back. He closed out the semi-final with a serve and volley, eventually forcing Pouille into a forehand error.
