Junior ace Tsitsipas now aims for the stars

Stefanos Tsitsipas didn’t say it lightly but, oozing the confidence of someone who has already made it to the top of the world as a junior player, the young Greek star pondered his future on Wednesday and pronounced with a smile: “Yes, I believe I can become a big champion.”

Why shouldn’t he believe? After all, things are moving fast for the 18-year-old prospect from Athens and he was feeling on a high after an emphatic second-round win in qualifying, 6-3 6-3, over the well-supported home player Gleb Sakharov, which moves him just one match away from his first taste of main-draw action in a Grand Slam.

If Tsitsipas can next overcome German Oscar Otte, it would be entirely in keeping with his inexorable progression from world junior No.1 to becoming one of the most talked-about tyros on the circuit with a thoroughly modern game based on aggression and power but laced with a delicate touch and a lovely one-handed backhand. Only a couple of weeks ago, the lad ranked 202nd in the world turned over the talented Czech world No. 56 Jiri Vesely. “I felt that fire inside of me when I played him,” he told rolandgarros.com.

It’s a burning sensation that he’s evidently feeling increasingly. With the sun blazing down on him and a bunch of kids clamouring around him for autographs outside Court 14 after his 70-minute defeat of Sakharov, you could not help but think that here was a youngster who seemed perfectly at home with all the fuss that comes with being one of the circuit’s next big things.

“Many people do expect a lot of things from you after you’ve been the No.1 junior,” mused the teenager who follows the illustrious likes of Gael Monfils, Marin Cilic, Nick Kyrgios and, most recently, Alexander Zverev, in holding that title since the ITF introduced its combined junior ranking system in 2004.

“I wouldn’t say I feel a lot of pressure because of that. I know that I got to the No.1 in juniors, but the professionals is more important for me now and I have to keep focussed and keep going the way I am right now.

“If I do all the things right and keep concentrating on my tennis and on my fitness, my daily routines, it will, for sure, pay off in the future. I’m very confident to go high and it’s my dream from my childhood.”

What is most impressive about Tsitsipas, who’s already the Greek No.1, is that he is so evidently doing all the right things to make it to the top. He talked about his hard training and working on his fitness this week with a new physical trainer who once worked with Serena Williams.

“If I do all the things right and keep concentrating on my tennis and on my fitness, my daily routines, it will, for sure, pay off in the future. I’m very confident to go high and it’s my dream from my childhood.”

“I’m very happy that I’ll have a physio to travel with me now which will be very important to my development as a player. It’s going to help me a lot.”

Having tennis in the blood helps too, he added, talking of his father Apostolos, who as a qualified coach has been his chief mentor, and Russian mum, Julija Apostoli, who once made the top 200 on the WTA tour, a feat her son emulated in January on the men’s tour.

“I see it as something positive that a person from your family played professionally - she’s very supporting and as a son, I love her,” said the man known as ‘Stef’ who started playing under his parents’ watch as a three-year-old when they were coaching at a summer resort in Greece.

These days, after having achieved his first Grand Slam success by winning the boys’ doubles in 2016 at Wimbledon with Estonian Kenneth Raisma, Tsitsipas finds himself spending more time at his base in Nice at the Mouratoglou Academy than in Athens, where he hopes his progress is inspiring other young players.

“Sometimes when I’m in Athens, we have some top players there but the tennis atmosphere is better at the academy; there are better players for me to train with. (Serena Williams’ coach) Patrick (Mouratoglou) gives me advice from time to time too when he’s at the academy or at the big tournaments like here at the French. It’s very motivating.”

As have been his practice sessions up with the best players in the world. “It helps to play with the top 10 players. I think I’ve practised with them all except Federer and Nadal. You never know," he laughed.

If he could stop the nerves from jangling and win his third-round qualifying match, maybe Nadal could be on the agenda - as an opponent - in the main draw.

And if that fire is burning inside him again, here’s a potential new Greek hero who’s beginning to think anything is possible.

Stefanos Tsitsipas capped a perfect week on the clay of Genova, Italy, claiming his maiden ATP Challenger Tour title on Sunday.
The 19 year old did not drop a set en route to becoming just the third player from Greece to lift a Challenger trophy. He joins countrymen Konstantinos Economidis and Vasilis Mazarakis.
Tsitsipas' victory marks the 11th time a teenager has tasted victory on the circuit this year and second of the week, following Felix Auger-Aliassime's title in Sevilla on Saturday. He rises to a career-high No. 120 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and moves up 11 spots in the Emirates ATP Race To Milan, to the 16th position.

Congratulations Stefanos on winning your first Challenger title. How did it feel to be standing with the trophy?
It was pretty special and something I've been dreaming about for a long time. It was a relief for me at the end. I was super happy and everyone on my team was happy. I brought a lot of happiness to people who were supporting me, throughout the whole tournament. They gave me a lot of positive energy and that helped a lot.
You did not drop a set this week. What was the key for you?
It was unusual. To not drop a set is rare and difficult to achieve. My serve was working very well throughout the week. I felt very comfortable with it. I was actually not going to play the Challenger, because it was right after the US Open finished and I wanted a rest. The last second I decided to play and it turned out to be a good decision.
You are just the third player from Greece to win a Challenger title. What does that mean to you for your country?
I am very happy to know this fact. And I am 100 per cent sure that it will inspire other kids in my country. It makes me happy, but I am going to keep working and it's not the end of it.

Having lost two finals in Morocco last year, what did you take from those experiences into Sunday's final in Genova?
It made me stronger for sure. It made me realize my mistakes from those two finals. I was ready for this one in Genova and I was more calm on the court. I handled the situation a bit better.
You've had some great wins and tough losses in the past year. How have you remained confident?
I know where my level is. I know I am one of these good NextGen players who can do well here. I never lost hope. I did have some good wins and tough losses this year, but my family and my team are always encouraging me. It has been working well. They are very supportive. There are a lot of people around me, but I don't feel pressure. It makes you realize how important you are, to have a big team around you and it's something good. I'm lucky to have them.

You are up to No. 120 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. Has cracking the Top 100 been a goal for you this year?
Yes, that's right. I set this goal at the beginning of the year. I hope to achieve it and I hope to be competing at the main draw of the Australian Open next year. I'm close and 20 spots is a matter of a few tournaments and some extra concentration. It's motivation for me and my team. It's going to come for sure. One extra push at a time.
How has the recent success of other teenagers, particularly Denis Shapovalov and Andrey Rublev, driven you?
For sure it has. I saw what Shapovalov did a few weeks ago in Montreal and it inspired me so much. It made me realize that nothing is impossible. He's a year younger than me, so it's insane what he did. It makes it even more special.
What were your impressions on the tournament in Genova - the 2014 Challenger of the Year?
It was a very good tournament. I had a lot of positive energy from it. The hotel was really nice and the club was perfect with a really big centre court. It's something rare for a Challenger. I saw it was voted as the best Challenger of the Year. I was playing in front of a lot of people from the beginning of the week. Everything was perfect.
Lastly, what are your goals for the rest of the year?
I would say to win another Challenger. That would bring me closer to my goal of Top 100. I aim for one more Challenger title. I will probably go to China after the [ATP World Tour] tournament in Metz.

Grecki kolos, który w ostatnich tygodniach podkręcił obroty i zanotował ogromny awans w światowym rankingu. W najświeższym notowaniu Tstitsipas zameldował się na 120. miejscu, ale kwestią czasu wydaje się, gdy pobije liczący blisko 50 lat rekord kraju Nicholasa Kalogeropoulosa (#69). Ze swoim wzrostem (193 cm) znakomicie czuje się w polu serwisowym. Lubi wypady do siatki, ale zaskakująco dobrze wygląda również w grze z głębi kortu. Jego największą bolączką pozostaje jednoręczny backhand, ale i tak znacznie polepszył ten element względem tego, co pokazywał jeszcze kilka miesięcy temu.

W minionym tygodniu Tsitsipas wygrał swój pierwszy turniej Challenger, ogrywając w finale Guillermo Garcię Lopeza. Co ciekawe, dokonał tego na mączce, która do tej pory nie była jego ulubioną nawierzchnią. 19-latek ma już za sobą debiut na Wielkim Szlemie – w tym roku udanie przeszedł kwalifikacje do French Open i Wimbledonu, gdzie jednak odpadał w pierwszych rundach. Wystąpił też na kilku imprezach z cyklu ATP. Furory tam nie zrobił, ale – jak choćby w meczu z Jo-Wilfriedem Tsongą – pozostawił po sobie dobre wrażenie.

Karlovic retired after injuring his left ankle while serving. Tsitsipas will now challenge top-seeded Belgian and Nitto ATP Finals contender Goffin or NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe, who is bidding to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Who needs shoelaces to win an ATP World Tour quarter-final?

Greek #NextGenATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas was up against a motivated World No. 10 David Goffin in Antwerp, with the in-form top seed battling for a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals in November. Tsitsipas’ shoelaces on his left sneaker broke from sliding, and by the end of the second set his replacement set did as well. It was no problem for the 19 year old, who had never been in an ATP World Tour quarter-final, and has qualified at his past five tour-level events. He borrowed his father’s laces and went on to defeat Goffin, 2-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(4) in two hours, 33 minutes at the European Open on Friday.

“I felt really happy that I could play this way. It’s a very important victory for me today,” said Tsitsipas, who has high hopes for the rest of the week and his future. “Keep my level at the level I was playing today, maybe even better and things will come. They come with time.”

It was Tsitsipas’ first victory over a Top 10 player in the Emirates ATP Rankings after claiming his first ATP World Tour win just last week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters (d. Khachanov).

The 6’4” rising star maintained his hopes of qualifying for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals, moving from No. 13 at the beginning of the week to the No. 10 spot with 547 points. If Tsitsipas goes on to claim his first ATP World Tour title, he will sit in ninth, 65 points behind No. 7 Daniil Medvedev, who currently occupies the final automatic qualifying spot in the Race.

It was a tough blow for Goffin, who is in a battle to earn his London spot. The Belgian, who won back-to-back titles at the Shenzhen Open and the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2017, is eighth in the Race with 2,750 points. And while he currently would be the seventh player to qualify because No. 7 Stan Wawrinka is out for the season due to injury, No. 9 Pablo Carreno Busta, No. 11 Sam Querrey and No. 12 Kevin Anderson are all within 300 points.

Goffin had three break chances in the 16-point third game of the second set to gain what would have been a break, but he could not convert. And while Tsitsipas failed to serve out the match twice — at 5-4 and 6-5 in the decider — he triumphed on his first match point in the final-set tie-break.

Tsitsipas will play fourth seed Diego Schwartzman, who beat fifth seed David Ferrer, 7-5, 6-2.

In the other half of the draw, No. 2 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continued his pursuit of a fourth title (Rotterdam, Marseille, Lyon) this season by defeating compatriot Julien Benneteau, 7-6(5), 6-2.

It was Tsonga’s third win in his past four tries against Benneteau, after not playing his fellow Frenchman since losing to him at the BNP Paribas Open in 2014. Nine of 12 points in the tie-break went to the returner, and Tsonga carried the momentum of winning it into the second set, breaking twice to advance to his fifth semi-final of the season.

Tsonga will play an opponent he has never faced in the final Belgian remaining in the draw, Ruben Bemelmans, who clawed past Joao Sousa, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
